Can anyone recommend some good ones in DC? Even conveyor belt ones, as long as they're good.
-
sushi taro - there is no other. 17th and P, above the CVS. it's on the spendy side but so worth it.
-
Ditto, but I don't really think it's too pricey. Cheaper than my local place, but just as delicious.

Cafe Japone - dupont
-
I hope you mean it's cheaper than Flying Fish (good one, btw)...

Sushi Taro x 834797359
Also good is Marusaki is Tenleytown.
-
Is that in Dupont, next to Blockbuster? And close to JR's, the gay bar?

yes, it's east of dupont, two blocks before the whole foods. CVS is on the corner, blockbuster underneath (on 17th), taro above.
it's not crazy spendy a la nobu, but it's a little above average.
i'm a sushi fanatic, it's by far my favorite food. i gave up on finding anything better in DC. i occasionally dabble in other places, but always go back to taro. i had an ex who worked at the world bank, and asked her long-time japanese co-workers what's the best they came across. unanimous response was taro.
next question :)

I'm a high-roller, baby!

raw fish near a gay man's bar.
sushi taro vs. kaz's bistro. some say kaz has gone down hill.
2025 - no more seafood for us all.
-
Sushi Sono (http://www.sushisonomd.com/menu.html) (in Columbia, MD) is exceptional, but a pain to get to unless you're going to Merriweather.
Sushi Taro (my favorite)
Sushi Ko (not bad either, but expensive)
Nooshi (on 19th Street) used to do a sushi happy hour during the week that was a great value, not sure they still do. It's still good for the price.

Ditto on these two, but I have to say that while these are probably the best in DC, they're nowhere near as good as sushi in LA or NYC. So you pay essentially the same prices for what would be considered average at best in those other cities.

For anyone ever in Annapolis - Joss has the best sushi hands down.
-
i like Uni in dupont circle.
totally reasonable, and they have this mango-salmon sushi roll that has a bit of mint in it...it's like crack.

i wonder if any dc sushi places actually make a "crackroll"? perhaps in ne.

Definitely have to agree with you there, better than any place in DC that I've had sushi.
-
Sushi Taro, FTW.
Side note: They're yearly all-you-can-eat Cherry Blossom thing is on April 5th. Bring your asses.

I'm going to second this recommendation. I've been going to Sushi Uni for nearly six years and it's unbelieveable.
I've had one bad experience there in probably 100 visits, but I'll keep that to myself. It's never busy either.
I highly recommend the mango salmon roll and the extreme picante roll.

explains why it's so good - untouched and unspoiled...
<hides>

two of my faves:
Yosaku
Murasaki (better prices at lunch)
both in Tenleytown
on MacArthur Boulevard, if you can get in, it's a small sushi bar and very popular: Kotobuki (upstairs) - cheap too!
-
Another for Sushi Taro. That place is damn good.
-
Looks like 7 for Sushi Taro.
Thanks everyone! :D
-
If you go, mention that econo sent you. They'll hook you up.

wait - is this a call out for a get together ;)

once when i went to sushi taro, the lunch special was a fish head in a bowl of broth with a side of something that looked like dried intestines. i tried sitting at their traditional japanese tables, and made it for about twenty minutes, before my legs cramped. they actually started laughing at me when i had to stretch out all over the place.

I cannot believe that Kaz Sushi Bistro on I Street has not been mentioned on this thread. The sushi preparations there blow everything else in the city out of the water: tuna w/ black truffle & salmon w/ mango puree are 2 of my favorites. Go often!

I've personally never really liked Sushi Taro. Sushi Ko has always been my favorite. Tako Grill up in bethesda is good most of the time if you're up that way.
-
for what it's worth, I do not recommend the new-ish sushi place next to Clyde's & the gallery place movie theatre.
I've never had tasteless sushi before. bleh.
-
I'll second Murasaki and Kotobuki. I also like Raku in Bethesda alot. I went there last night with a couple Japanese friends and they really liked it. The funny thing though is while I prefer the more traditional stuff, they are more interested in the Americanized stuff, like Philly rolls, since they can't get that in Japan. The one tradtional item we got--sea urchin nigiri--was very good and my Japanese friends agreed. I've been to this place a few times and never had a bad experience. Their non-sushi items are really good too.
I plan on trying Sushi Ko soon...

Though not in DC, I have to give a shout out to Yuraku in Germantown. Great food at reasonable prices. Just avoid the lunch buffet.
-
Yes, yes. Yuraku is great. I go there at least twice a month.
Do you live in Germantown?

Montgomery Village, but moving up north to the Frederick area in about a month. Will still head down the road for Yuraku though!
Are you in MoCo as well?

Dangit! I can walk to Tai Shan, but have never tried it and I find out it's great now? A month before I'm moving?!
The move is so I can shack up with my partner. Gonna have to find a job closer to Frederick, so I don't have to commute to G'burg tho.

Must be a great partner LOL. 'Cause that's like an additional 18 miles away from DC! :p

Yeah, he's a good guy. I was thinking that when I was driving home from the Meat Beat Manifesto show the other night and was thankful I didn't have that extra 30 minutes yet.

Sushi King in Columbia...hands down the best.
-
Oh man, that brings me back. I used to eat there weekly when I was dating a girl from Burtonsville. Good stuff indeed...

Sushi Ko in DC is very good.
I live about 2 miles from Sushi Sono and go there often. I know alot of people like Sushi King too, and it's good, but usually the people who like Sushi King the best have never been to Sushi Sono :)
-
Tachibana
-
Same owners...I think. Been to Sushi Sono it was very good but I like Sushi King better...more laid back atmosphere and great staff.

They're related, but not the same owners.
