Title: Free Paste
Post by: Bombay Chutney on October 31, 2007, 06:44:00 pm
Did anyone mention this yet?

This Radiohead Thing Has Sprouted All Sorts Of New Ideas

Now a music magazine has adopted the Radiohead donation model. For a limited time, Paste Magazine is allowing people to pay what they want for a one-year subscription. Keep in mind each issue comes with a compilation CD, so a subscription was a good deal to begin with. The minimum fee is $1, there is no processing fee and one-year renewals are permitted.

I'm such a patsy.  I did it, fully intending to pay $5, then when I got to check out I made it $10.  The thought of the CDs got to me....

I'm disappointed.  From the title of this thread, I thought you were advertising something free for me to eat.

Reading the article VanSmack linked to yesterday (in his "Things you ought to know" thread) regarding the precipitous decline in adult DVD sales made me wonder about adult magazines and magazines in general.  How are THEY surviving?  A free download of the current Rolling Stone interview with Bruce Springsteen (ugh!) isn't as covetous as say, a free download of "Saw IV" or the new Kid Rock album (it's probably on the Rolling Stone website for free, anyway) but I guess it would save SOMEONE from buying the issue.  And it's not like anybody waited for Spin to weigh in on the "In Rainbows" story.  You went to pitchfork or this message board to get the best info and opinions.  I do like some magazines, though.  I guess they depend entirely on ad revenue but for a younger generation it seems kind of pointless to get your information from a magazine when you can hear or watch what they are writing about for free.

Paste has ticked me off.  I all of a sudden started getting paste in the mail w/o ordering it and now they want me to pay them 70 bucks for the year's subscription.

They want you to pay the NEWSTAND price? That's odd. The year's subscription is $19.95,

I know you guys think I'm cheap, but I just shelled out a whole 8 bucks for the subscription.

I wonder how smartass dollar amounts these situations (Radiohead, Paste, etc.) get.  Like $4.20, $0.69, $6.66, etc.

I bet My Chemical Romance would get more numbers like those.

With the exception of magazines that do not include advertisements (Consumer Reports, et al), I don't feel any magazine subscription should be over $0.50/issue.

Does that even cover shipping charges?

Have you seen ad rates for major magazines? I know a guy here in Richmond who puts out a crappy magazine and he has like 20,000 subscribers (at no charge) and prints 200,000 free copies for newstands, and off ads alone recoups his money tens of times over.

For a major magazine (be it Newsweek or Paste), the shipping should be subsidized by ads. Most reliable models show as the cost decreases per issue, the subscriptions will rise which will lead to an higher advertiser rates and revenues.

I did this the other day. Thought I'd also mention that Under the Radar is currently $8.25/year, or four issues + a CD from their selection (or $15.50 for 8 issues/2 CDs). It's a good deal, I think.

At current dollar/pound exchange rates,  The Wire (http://www.thewire.co.uk/) is about $115 for a year plus 4 of their Wire Tapper CDs, or a year plus two additional issues if you already have the CDs. Whadda bahgun!
