I know there is a thread for the wishlist/predictions, but i thought another thread would be nice just for the confirmed lineup..
Virgin Mobile Festival (http://www.virginmobilefestival.com)
August 9 & 10, 2008
Baltimore, MD
Foo Fighters
Jack Johnson
Kanye West
Nine Inch Nails
Stone Temple Pilots
-
I was wondering when the Foo would show up in DC. I'm hoping for everything I want to see to be on Saturday... That means STP and Kanye should play on Sunday.
-
STP is Sunday; Jack Johnson is Saturday.
-
yes, johnson has to be saturday as he's headlining APW on sunday.
if NIN are also saturday: does this mean they'll be playing the small stage? i'd hope not, they have a huge light & laser rig that requires a big stage... in which case it would be NIN before jack johnson. what a seemless combo!
the alternative wouldn't be much better: kanye + jack. angry ranting dude vs. chilled-out zen dude. dream ticket for the ladies
-
Trent Reznor=dream ticket for me.
I could give a crap about Jack Johnson or Kanye.
-
I guess I'm the only person excited about Kanye. *shrug*

Well, I would be, save for that I did see him at HFStival and Lollapalooza 2 years back and I doubt he's doing too much different.
Both shows were good though, especially Lolla, as he brought out Lupe Fiasco and i believe Kano, or someone else.
He puts on a good show, I'll probably skip it at VFest but only because I've seen it before.
He'll be better than Jack Johnson thats for sure!

I have a feeling Jack Johnson headline the second stage for some reason. Also, I think STP will be in the Beastie Boys slot (next to last band on main stage) before either NIN or Foo Fighters.

I had to sit through a Jack Johnson set in 2003 at Coachella as he was sandwiched between Sonic Youth and the White Stripes.
oh it was bad, and to make matters worse, he brought G Love on stage for a few songs. ugh.

It depends on what's going on in the dance tent/second stage.
Ive been listening to his latest cd a lot in the past 2 or 3 weeks.
-
what a terrible line up. do not want.
-
Hey Seth, if you're checking this out, could you tell us when the rest of the lineup is going to be announced?
-
Alternative Rock!!
-
maybe there can be a jack johnson/trent reznor collaboration.
like on the bowie/nin tour they can perform their songs together.
-
As a self-congratulatory hipster, I can say that this lineup wasnt what I was expecting, but its nothing that Jamiroquai cant fix :D
-
Put STP and Foo on the same day and I'm all over it.
-
now I'm actually looking forward to Fort Reno
-
While I have seen STP, NIN and Foos, I wouldn't mind seeing them again.
I'm pretty excited about Kanye. I haven't seen him and well, I'd like to check out what he's got.
I'm a bit surprised that so far there haven't been any classic rock bands announced yet. cheap trick, the who, the police...you get what I mean.
I have a feeling there's an awesome classic surprise perhaps? (I am dreaming of AC/DC but that probably won't happen.)
Though people can shit on jack johnson all they want, since he's on the bill, my mother is considering about going with me, which would be pretty awesome. If my mom goes for Jack Johnson and stays for everything else, I'd call that a successful day.

Since she has to drop you off in her minivan and pick you back up afterwards anyway, it makes sense for her to just stay all day. Maybe she'll buy you a slurpee!

Well in my family, we don't take vacations- We go see concerts. I'm from Frostburg, so when I'm home during summer and not at school, I'm about 2 1/2 hours away from any sort of decent music. Might as well make it a family road trip, right? By the way, I'm 22 going on 23.
Last year's V-fest was great with friends, but it was strange seeing all these great bands without my family. I would love to be able to get my parents VIP tickets that way my father (who has breathing issues) can see some pretty major bands and so my mom might actually enjoy some music too. I am very lucky that I have parents who share a love for music with me and though we might have different tastes (my mom is for much more mellower things while my dad digs all sorts of stuff), they're pretty cool with taking my sister and I places to see bands. Ever since I was 13, my mom has taken my sister and I to see stuff at the 930 club and some of these were shows on school nights lol.
But seriously though, I would want my parents to go because it's a family thing, not because I need them to be there. I can hold down my own pretty nicely and yes, my mom would buy me a slushy because she is that awesome.
-
I want to see Filter on this bill so we can have some strange NIN, Filter, Army of Anyone, STP thing going on...

As I said in the paper, I'm still booking it...whenever that's done, we'll announce it...wanted to get the mainstream stuff out there so we can get the whining here over with, although they'll probably all whine about the other stuff too
bottom line is...if you liked the last 2 years, you're gonna like this year after you hear the whole lineup...and if you didn't like the other V Fests, you'll probably take great pride in telling everyone how you're going to Coachella to see Portishead
and hey, by the way, saintangelsin...
my parents (and my kids) went last year so fuck those assholes that don't understand family
-
Shouldn't this and all other Virgin Fest threads be moved to the WHFS message board? This in an indie rock board for cool people.
-
worst festival ever

Excellent display of family values.

If that's the Foos' official DC date, I'm gonna weep.
That said, I'm VERY glad this festival isn't the same weekend as Lollapalooza. At least I have the ability to go....

So we should take this as a confirmation of no Portishead? :(

Hearing that from you just makes my day. Thank you, Seth! I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has a rock'n roll family.
For many years, people (other concert goers) have found it nuts that my parents are not only just willing to drive my sister and I about 120 miles each way (yeah it's a pretty far trip to the club or a gig in DC from our house) to see bands but they actually want to see the bands too! Not to mention, my parents (who are now in their mid 50s)love the 9:30 Club.
Honestly, those assholes who don't understand the whole family thing at concerts are just jealous ;) They wish their families were just as hip.
ps- best of luck with booking the rest of the bands!
-
I would just like to send out a mass "you are welcome" for getting you the lineup first...my PM box is full, so i understand if you don't show your gratitude...
as always...
-
I think I'm going to have to pull a serious mea culpa, despite all my dogging about "fuck, i hate outdoor fests, etc etc etc" I am totally all over this... Rabbit in the fucking Moon, of all things, sealed it for me. Hopefully will at least have a chance to promote it, not that it needs it, but Seth, apologies. I'm actually excited for this lineup.

Gogol Bordello is confirmed.
http://sideonedummy.com/tours.php?band_name=Gogol_Bordello (http://sideonedummy.com/tours.php?band_name=Gogol_Bordello)
Are they any good?
-
gogol are a frikken riot, definitely recommended. i've seen them 4 times now so i'm kind of over them, but i was utterly blown away the first time i saw them at the 930. this is a show you'll want to be front and center for, the dancing/moshing is fun and good-natured (hopefully this will hold true for the festival setting).
i'd definitely make it a point to catch gogol at the festival.

from the way it sounded when seth was on the radio, it seems like something else may be planned. but who knows, maybe he was just talking about them headlining.

STP is good. And NIN wouldn't be bad if the other headliners were better. But when you are basically looking at STP and NIN....a little weak. PLEASE don't put them on at the same time. They both had their best days at the same time. People like me grew up listening to both of them. So naturally, most people who go to see STP, will also be going to see NIN. PLEASE don't put them on at the same time.
But I have been a huge supporter of this Festival, and have faith Seth will pull it off again this year. Gogol is an awesome start.

FUCK YES!
I just saw them at the Electric Factory in Philly about a month ago and saw them at 930 last year sometime. This > headliners
4sho! Keep the good news acomin'!

Start Wearing Purple is my song right now haha.
And I actually put these guys down on my list for bands that should/could be booked. Score!

So is Rabbit in the Moon offical? If so, that is pretty fucking rad!

I agree with this. It would be pretty rough to try to pick between the two. Just like you Cash, I grew up listening to both bands. I know that Seth tries to schedule stuff so it's like there's a little bit of something for everyone when bands are playing. A good example of this was when Interpol and Velvet Revolver were playing at the same time last year, it worked well. Those who like mainstream rock had something and those who like indie stuff had something. Also, pitting 311 against the Pumpkins was brillant. The kids who are partiers had 311 and the rest of us were able to enjoy the Pumpkins without much hassle. A final example, though it's not as strong perhaps, was having Panic! At the Disco playing at the same time as Bad Brains. I was able to go watch a real punk band while Panic were playing. Though after watching 20 minutes of Bad Brains, I got a little bored. (Sorry, it's true!)
But just like you, I have faith that Seth will take this into consideration. He's a music geek like the rest of us and understands the issues surrounding pitting simular bands against each other.

Have Foos & STP headline the Main Satge Saturday, and NIN headlines the Main Stage on Sunday. The second Will Jack Johnson on Saturday and Kanye West on Sunday. However, if they get more acts, I'm open to changing it up a bit.
