Don't the boys from Franz Ferdinand know that any cred they might have will dissolve into nothing now that they've appeared on the Grammys in that ridiculous opening medley? Poor things!

only to people who actually watched the grammys.
-
Are you telling me you missed the tribute to Southern Rock featuring Gretchen Wilson singing Freebird, as well as Tim McGraw and Keith Urban? That was priceless. And this years MC Hammer, Kanye West, proved why the critics love him so much: because hip hop is da bomb!
-
I didn't watch, but I heard Ray Charles won 8 awards and didn't even show up. Jerk.

That was the most laughably horrible thing I'd ever seen.

I kept flipping between the Grammys and other stuff like Arrested Development and Desperate Housewives...and thinking, how the hell could our culture have gone so terribly wrong...and I don't mean morality-wise...

elaborate on terribly wrong. and are encompassing AD and DH shows in this thinking?
i was painting shelves and listening to Janis Joplin last night...

yeah...they both were awful, too...and yet I recall that AD won some awards for best show or something...and so did DH...I just don't get the appeal...
it's probably just me...
I should have turned off the TV and focused on the books I was trying to read

arrested development is my favorite american tv show since curb your enthusiasm ... everyone's sense of comic timing is right on, there are so many plot elements weaved into a season, and whoever writes the dialogue is a genius (not to mention the great camera work)

I thought last nights episode of Arrested Development was fantastic, I only started watching because it is on after the simpsons, but I have really started to like it
what shows did you see before that made you think our culture was better than now?
-
Some guy that posts on my other chat board was nominated for best children's album, but I don't know if he won.

you're right...I guess my first mistake is gauging the quality of culture on TV shows...I can't think of any shows that are so great...
to HoyaSaxas comment, I guess I did used to like Curb Your Enthusias, when I had free cable...
I would never pay for cable, though, so I guess that keeps me from the "better" shows

Also a fan of Arrested Development, which has surpassed the simpsons, in my opinion, in the Fox Lineup.
Some "great" shows, in no particular order:
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Frontline
The Venture Bros.
Samurai Champloo (forthcoming to adult swim, but some of us have seen most of it already)
-
I know this thread is supposed to me on the Grammys, but I have to chime in on "Arrested Development." It is by far the funniest television show since Seinfeld. Tremendous comedic acting and splendid wit in the writing. I have to watch each episode a few times to absorb each clever line or reference.
One doesn't know what they are talking about comparing the television atrocity that is the Grammys with "Arrested Development."
-
I guess all those shows you guys are listing are alright, but as MC Hammer says, you can't touch this...

I liked Justin Bateman better on Silver Spoons.

Two MC Hammer references in the same thread, and one equating him with Kanye West.
You really don't listen to Hip Hop do you?

ESPN and Law and Order on TNT are the only 2 shows/channels i ever watch.
and apparently , I pay $20 a month for each of those channels! (though, my cable internet would be $14 higher if i didnt have cable TV)

Only when Kanye Hammer is on the Grammys. Hip hop and contemporary country are at the bottom of the music barrel for me.

I just kind of find Arrested Development too jarring...and it *is* packed with references, witticisms, etc., but are the witticisms *that* witty? I probably haven't watched it enough to truly comment, but I'm not compelled to...

So, what qualifies you to make that comparison? A P. Diddy/Hammer comparison would be more accurate.

Just my opinion, dude.

well, P Diddy and Hammer are nothing alike in my opinion. Hammer was pretty talentless and relied on silly outfits and catchy videos/songs to gain popularity. P Diddy was a producer that decided to step out and make a record. he's a great producer, bad singer/rapper. same with Pharell Williams.
imagine if Bob Rock or Nigel Godrich tried to make a CD
i have never heard Kanye West, but his name is lame as all get out, and he's probably just a lot of hype....hence Rhetts Hammer comparison....
-
yeah and he hops around with really goonie dance moves
what was up with the J-Lo and Marc Anthony number? my Spanish was too rusty to follow it...but it looked like it was supposed to be a campy play on the TV Novellas? if so...that might have been the freshest act on the whole show

We could argue about him being a "great" producer.
Kanye West was also a producer before he put out his debut album. He's different in that he balances the line between Top 10 hip-hop (Jay-Z, Ludacris) and some of the less mainstream artists like Talib Kweli and Mos Def.
He's not the best Rapper on the Mic lyrically, but his production is top notch and he's got good flow.

What instruments does he play, and can he sing?

Well, you won't have to worry about watching "Arrested Development" for too much longer. As David Cross said the other night on the Jimmy Kimmel show, production has been halted! He said he found out on the internet of all places."Why call me,I'm only a cast member" he remarked. He predicted that the wonderful Fox network would replace the show with an "actual reality show starring real retards" possibly a dating show......who knows?....America,enjoy your "Still Standing","Yes,Dear" and "Everybody Loves Raymond",you deserve it......

whats his favourite colour and does he like to fish?

Yes he can sing...though not very well.
I don't know what equipment he uses in the studio. I'd imagine a couple of sequencers, possibly some software like Reason or Cuebase, a synthesizer, and a drum machine, but I'm not sure.

here's an article (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/02/14/DDG23B9R261.DTL) about arrested development. apparently it's not canceled, but they cut back from 22 episodes to 18, and it won't be on during may sweeps, giving way to the latest crock of shit from the family guy dude.

what did he produce for Mos Def?

It's THAT shite is it?
Seriously.....I never got the humour in Seinfeld, Friends or the Simpsons. South Park is hilarious if you're in the mood, but even it gets old sometimes.
I'm still not over the novelty of being able to watch Black Adder, Royle Family, Only Fools and Horses, The Office and Porridge on UKTV Gold to watch anything current, although the one glimpse I saw of Arrested Development looked pretty funny.
-

I thought he did something on the New Danger. I know Mos appeared on College Dropout for one of the tracks.

I guess you bastards over there get the first crack at the new Gervais/Merchant series and I'll have to wait for it a year later on BBC America! Dammit! At least one reason to "love the limeys"...... :p

Speaking of arrested development...I got this in my mailbox this morning. Apparently, there's talk over at Fox to replace AD with Seth MacFarlane's new show "American Dad" on May 1st.

finally, you see my point. i thought you'd never get it.
oh, and its not the most brainless show all by itself...its tied with DOZENS of other programs.
but trust me, South Park is terribly terribly brainless. good entertainment for adolescent boys though i guess.

dozens of other programs, which you obviously don't watch ... thanks for your insight!!

oh, i am sorry. i suppose i needed to be more clear.
when i stated that i only watch Law and Order and ESPN , i didnt really mean that i have never seen another television program. you dimwit.
oh, I've seen South Park, Everybody Loves Raymond, American Choppers, BET, that asian show in Spike TV, whatever.
how many times do i need to watch something before i can decide its brainless? for South Park, its once, though, trust me, I've sat through MANY more episodes than 1 in my life.
like i said, adolescent. nothing wrong with that really. if you still play with GI Joes.
I've seen them, they're brainless. i dont watch em.
-
Brainless like watching a hockey game? :D
-

ohhhhhh, so you used hyperbole, which you explicitly denied using when you said SP was the most brainless show on TV ... just clearing things up, thanks ... keep those hopelessly contradictory statements coming!

not so. the most, meaning, no TV shows are more brainless. surely that show about the bounty hunter with a mullet is just as bad, but seeing as South Park has been on for so long and has such rabid fans as you, it would technically win out.
and thats NO hyperbole.
-
I sometimes wonder, before the days of messageboards, email, and BBS systems, were there as many arguments about semantics?
By the way "That asian guy show on Spike TV?" You mean MXC? For a second I was thinking "Did Spike start airing asian dramas?"
P.S. - I used to watch "That asian cooking competition on Food Network." ;)
-
the overdubbed asian show where they do dumb shit and hurt themselves.
i died laughing the first time i saw it, and i think i cried the second. some things are only funny once.
much unlike Hoya's troubles with Doug and Steve Butabi.

That is a f***ing crime. Arrested Development is the best comedy on t.v. Four sitcoms shows in current development I can stomach: Scrubs, Simpsons, A.D. and That 70s Show (which is losing its edge, but it gets props nonetheless).
Yeah, and "Yes Dear" and that awful Charlie Sheen My Two Dads show whatever are raking in the ratings....blech.

interesting question ... this is completely baseless when it comes to fact, just some thoughts ...
i would venture to guess that semantics were much more important in the era of formal communication by post (i.e., before the telephone, telegram, etc.) than they are in the era of internet communication ... when the only way to communicate with someone was via a letter that could take a month to reach the person, you would have to be very careful in what you wrote, and be very cognizant of semantics and tone ... using the wrong tone with someone could be very offensive, and trigger a (real, bloody) feud, unlike the petty bickering we see today online ...
i would guess that arguments over semantics declined as communication became easier and more personal, and then rose again with the internet era ...
of course, all of this assumes that you were literate in the pre-telephone era, which is certainly not a given
