I've got a birthday dinner and an early plane to NYC the next morning.  If I make it anywhere, it'll be Black Cat for Capitol City vs Charm City (Bonapartes, Two if By Sea, The Hard Tomorrows)

I hope that Radiohead will play 2 songs (both new ones that will suck) and then walk off.

Where are they playing? It's supposed to rain Friday night if I'm correct about the weather forecast. Just wondering if I should sure up the windows and hunker down inside with a candle by my side and a good book.    :p

I thought the Bonapart's were breaking up.  Is this their last gig?

 Other options for Fri. night:

Telograph/Cedars (yea! See you there Fico)/, Soft Complex at Iota (www.iotaclubandcafe.com)

Justin Jones at the Velvet Lounge (www.velvetloungedc.com)

Anthony Fiacco and the Echoes at JamminJava (which now has a hard-liquor license;  and a remodeled interior which really opens up the stage area and improved the acoustics. (www.jamminjava.com)

but with all due respect to the above artists, I'd be at radiohead too...I tried.  I really, really, tried.  (SOB!)

Is anyone going to the Cat on Saturday for WAG, 60s garage and soul night?  The music they play is right up my alley, but nobody I know ever goes...

 ps, VISIT DOOMLINK (http://www.alex.to/doomlink)!

the only option as far as i'm concerned is the twilight singers, though john bustine/justin hoben at the velvet lounge is worth seeing, as he is one of dc's finest and unknown songwriters.

When I was a kid, we skipped the beer and just shot up in the alley behind the club, or in one of the shooting galleries in the tenement building next door!

I'd rather be seeing Radiohead. Why, oh, why couldn't they have played Merriweather?!

Anyway, I'll be at Twilight Singers as well....

I'm surprised more aren't mentioning this show! (also, that it's not sold out)
If TS wasn't happening, I'd be interested in the Iota show.
Toad in B'more for 90's nostalgia.

Twilight Singers

I don't love the new album, but the Afghan Whig shows of yore (especially the one in the mid-90s at the old Black Cat) were so chaotic that it's always worth giving Greg Dulli some of your precious time.

Be sure to say hello Bartleby. We are burned out after spending this week in the studio laying down the tracks to the new record. We were hoping to play some of the new songs to be found there but we haven't had the chance to rehearse the final arrangements as recorded...however it shall be a fun show with some of the new stuff and a kiss off to the older material  :)

btw, new record is sounding great...it will definitely surprise a lot of people, leaps and bounds above our first one..just loads better. We were at Inner Ear and the engineer TJ Lipple was just lovely...check out his band www.myspace.com/aloha (http://www.myspace.com/aloha)

we shall be done with it in mid-July once mixing is done by Chad Clark of Beauty Pill..who played a new song of their record and it is mind-blowing...

You might want to inform Chad that the Beauty Pill webpage seems to have disappeared.

Not that it's been updated in over a year.

Not that it's been updated in over a year.     :)  they got some REALLY cool stuff up their sleeves...its just the nature of the biz..things that may seem simple to outsiders take sooooo much time...but it'll be worth the wait..believe you me.

Cedars, Cedars, Cedars...Iota.  Tonight.

I promise not to sing too loudly when you play Fleets!  Even tho we won't hear the new stuff, someone near and dear (nope, not anyone's mommy) told me the whole new CD is consistently GREAT!

Hmmmm lets see...only 7 people in the whole world as of 11pm last night had heard the new songs...who could that be??

Yeah Aloha is great... we finally recorded how we always dreamed about doing it...it did however come at a VERY$$$ steep price...so before dissing us for being in the OC, a car commercial or a TV sitcom think of how our vacation days have been spent locked up in a studio, how hundreds of dolares leave our personal pockets monthly for rehearsal space, van insurance+gas, merch, etc...and how many thousands have been spent in recording..I'm saying this now cos we are gonna get our fookin break soon..and I don't wanna hear you clowns saying we sold out..not that I care, but just something to think about  :)  .that is all.

the reviews for the Twilight Singers are in so here is my belated comments on the Capitol City vs Charm City show at the Blackcat.

The Heavycoats cancelled at the last minute which is a shame because their reverb soaked 80s sound would have been worth checking out.

The Hard Tomorrows need to get a great booking agent, a reliable van and hit the road.  Nothing groundbreaking here just great songwriting and onstage presence and touring at this point will be the best way for them to get their name out.  I'm really diggin their EP at the moment..

Two If By Sea were OK, decent performance would probably work better if caught on tape in a studio with a good producer.  Lead singer looks like Iggy Pop's lost child.

The Bonapartes closed the night and because it was the bands last ever show not the most ideal way to see a band live.  The material off their EP shows they had the potential to go on to bigger and better things. However, it was pretty clear why the band was splitting up.  The new material was lackluster, cringe worthy and in need of lots of work.  Some of the band members were going through the motions and ready to call it  a day.  The audience didn't seem to care that the show was the bands last either.

i should qualify my statement a bit... the band said at one point this is our last show and there was no discernible reaction to it from the audience.

Cedars played a solid set over at IOTA last Friday; was nice to see them again.  And I was pretty impressed with Telograph.  a fun night out in Virginia for sure.
