Just got a new phone â?? no, not that one â?? and I puzzled over the problem. Should I not use one? Make a statement of hipness? Go with something retro? Just vibrate? Change it every day?
I ended up choosing "Calling Dr. Love" by Kiss â?? which prob. says all you need to know right there.
-
mine use to be the into to roadrunner by the modern lovers.
-
I have software for ringtone creation. I use different songs for different people in my address book but otherwise a generic tone for everyone else. E.g., "Mr. Suit" for a friend whose last name is Suit and a Janacek passage for a friend studying Czech music.
-
For summer, it's the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B." But I have an ever growing collection of tones for different moods. I'm a consumer.
-
i change mine up a lot...
i've had everything from 'banquet' by bloc party to 'intergalactic' by the beasties to my favorite... the super mario bros. theme.
but it's currently 'smile' by lily allen. *shrug* it's a fab summer song and it was quite appropriate at the time i applied it to my phone. i think i may be heading back to the super mario bros. theme soon though.

Software for ringtone creation? Can you explain? I'd love to get one particular song that I have as an MP3 converted into a ring tone, but I don't have the means. Also, I'm lazy.

you can also do it with a bluetooth adapter, which i keep meaning on buying...
on my last phone, i played it super cheap and just used the recorder function to record mp3s playing from my computer speakers and then applied as ringtones. it took some playing around with, but worked.
-
I don't really have a song ringtone yet, but I really want
muh na ma na (do do do do do) muh na ma na (do do do do)...
-
"fix up look sharp" -- dizzee rascal
"seventeen years" -- ratatat

ARG. my ex-boyfriend had that has a ringtone... it drove me nuts...
he had the muppets version. cake also has one though too.
-
People who use ringtones in public are assholes.
-
Interesting...I may have to try that.

i just held my phone up to the cd player and recorded.
-
I use the Pancake Mountain theme song.
-
What's so awesome is that I tried downloading software to shorten the song, then tried forcing a conversion to a midi file and emailing it to my phone, hoping to trick the software into letting it work, which it didn't.
And in about 20 minute, two of you came up with the same idea which is about 1,000 times easier. And it never crossed my mind. I'm lame.

The Cars - Hello Again, but my phone is ALWAYS on vibrate unless I am at home, and I rarely answer it anyway

Asshole might be a little strong, but for the most part I agree. If you have your phone on you then there is NO reason why it should be set to anything but vibrate, especially in public. The only time my phone is ever on ring is when I plug it in to charge.

however, carrying a purse doesn't allow for the vibrate function to work as efficiently as if it were in a pocket...so for that reason, i disagree with there being NO reason for it to be on ring.

When Smackette calls - Sexxy Back by JT
When anyone else calls - Don't Stop Believin' by Journey

Vibrate only. I hate ringtones. So annoying.
-
I may just record "Chocolate Rain" tonight.

this is the only correct answer to this question.

i got tired of ringtones and always have my phone on vibrate. i can even hear it in my purse. dont know about people who cant, unless your purse is a mile away from you, or maybe you have way too much stuff in it.
if my phone is on, its whatever some generic ringtone from verizon is. but if i ever put on a ringtone it will definitely be "wheel in the sky" from journey. wonder if thats a cali thing smackie?

I hear ya. Sometimes the song is soooo good that I fail to answer the call.
-
Mine's on vibrate unless I'm at home or someone is really trying to reach me while I'm driving.....my newest tone....Nazareth's "Hair Of The Dog".....
-
my ringtone currently is just a generic ring that was on the phone.
my old phone, i made my own.
it was the whole mike tyson "i want to eat his children" quote. it was great when my phone would ring and people would wonder wtf was going on.
-
i'm a moron and lose my phone so i need it to ring. although right now it's just a "continental" ring. no tones.
i wish it was the christopher walken continenal saying "cham-pah-nguh"

As I'm sure my girlfriend will point out, you are correct. She has hers on a ringtone because she can't feel the vibrate through her purse.
So yes, I was a little harsh.
And that said, I have a ringtone that I use as my alarm clock sometimes: "The Final Countdown" by Europe.
-
I don't own a cell phone.
-
I hate ringtones as well, but my favorite ringtone is when my friend Chris used "the Wretched" by Nine Inch Nails to ring every time his mom called him. That was pretty classic.
-
I rotate them things like clockwork:
Call Tones:
1) The Police - "The Bed's Too Big Without You"
2) U2 - "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
Ring Tones:
1) Jamiroquai - "Hot Tequila Brown"
2) A Tribe Called Quest - "Electric Relaxation"
3) AC/DC - "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"
Text Message Tone:
1) Jay-Z - "Imaginary Player"
2) The Unknown Stuntman/The Theme From "The Fall Guy" (I might jump from a building, or Tarzan from a viiiine/Cause I'm the only stuntman that made Eastwood look so fine.) The Fall Guy's gangsta was SO certified.
3) Stones - "Get Off My Cloud"
Honorable Mention: There's this one clingy, annoying, neurotic female that won't lose my number unfortunately. So for her, an extra special ringtone:
Three 6 Mafia - "Slob On My Knob (http://www.mediafire.com/?2zra1gmywg1)" :D
The reaction from people who've never heard the song is PRICELESS I say . . .

My phone rings like A PHONE! Surprisingly when it rings people often comment "what is THT" as if they had never heard an actual phone ring. The guy in the cube next to me at work has this horrid clip of 'sweet home alabama' (one of the most over rated and over played songs ever) that blares whne his phone rings. Not only that but he almost alwyas leaves his phone at his desk when he leaves and damn near every time someone will call while he is gone. Leaving me and the rest of the office to listen to that crap. People who have music ring tones should be required to keep the volume down and the phone in their pocket at all times! Or maybe not... :)

Rat - Perhaps you should send him this e-card...

Those of you with internet access on your phones: www.mobile17.com (http://www.mobile17.com)
It will convert music files on your computer to ring tones, much better quality than just recording, and FREE.
Mine is Mr. November by the National
-
the imperial march.
i have a couple others for certain people, but that's the main one. my phone is only set to ring when i'm at home, and i use different tones to decide whether or not i need to wake up/walk across the room to answer.
-
night sight by air. it sounds like a ring tone that would come with a phone. i like that.
-
mine is Just Like Honey :)
before that it was "100%" by Sonic Youth
and before that it was "Mr.Blue Sky" by ELO
and before THAT it was "The Sound of Settling" by Death Cab.
-
"Everybody! Everybody!" (the 'theme song' to Homestarrunner.com)

My wife has a black coworker whose ringtone is "Sweet Home Alabama".
Director, is that you?
-
Taken from a Guardian editorial article:
"If you truly believe you need to pick a mobile phone that "says something" about your personality, don't bother. You don't have a personality. A mental illness, maybe - but not a personality."
that being said, I do have ring tones, but NOBODY phones me and I am fine with that.

The software is actually less "creation" than "facilitation." I edit ripped WAVs down to the song parts I want (e.g. the drum and guitar break in Ohio Players' "Fire" for my firefighting brother) and save them as low-res mono MP3s. The software transfers the MP3s to the phone; I think the software also shrinks MP3s to resolutions appropriate for the phone.
I have a RAZR and bought Motorola software that transfers stuff between my PC and phone, including pics taken with the phone. Obviously, the phone has to be connected to the computer. I already had the necessary USB<>mini-USB cable for my phone so I bought the download version of the software. Some boxed versions come with a variety of connectors to match most phones on the market.

If you're a Sprint User, follow these instructions:
http://sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58361 (http://sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58361)
Most of you will have to create QPC ringers. It seems difficult when you read it but will become old hand in no time.
All other users can follow those instructions to create the ringer, but will have to find other means to upload/transfer the song to your phone, depending on your phone/service.
EDIT: I just tested this uploader. It definitely works for Verizon (I'm guessing it works for others) so replace the instruction to use the Sprint uploader with this one after you create the file:
http://www.funformobile.com/pages/ringtone/upload2.php (http://www.funformobile.com/pages/ringtone/upload2.php)
(data plan charges may apply depending on your plan)
-
I just got a new phone and currently rotate between:
Rise Above by Black Flag
Marquee Moon by Television
Verizon's ringtone selection is just not doing it for me. I may try that freebie web site Graace posted. Is Bliptones still around? Their web site is screwy.
-
Miss P I like that. I will be sending it along to a number of people. Unfortunately they will all think it is nothing more than a joke...

For the regular rotation I use:
Footsteps - Pearl Jam
I Want to Hear What You Have Got to Say - The Subways
For certain people:
Question - Old 97's
The Guy That Says Goodbye to You Is Out of His Mind - Griffin House
Dirty Frank - Pearl Jam
I guess I really like long song titles in my cell phone.
