Title: Snow Patrol in May
Post by: Bags on February 22, 2005, 04:32:00 pm
Pretty interesting.  Even though the pre-sale was hard to find, it's sold out.  Tickets still available for NYC, San Francisco and others, though.

Tickets are $20.  Looks like this is going to sell rather quickly.

Yeah, it probably will. Any word on the opener?

Nope, no openers listed.  I will note, though, that the DC show is the only one listed without a start time -- I'm actually thinking there weren't any DC presale tickets available...

The show in Norfolk has Athlete listed as an opener.

I don't know snow patrol that well, but i've heard "spitting games" and "run" a few times each ... "spitting games" i liked a lot, "run" seemed like it was on the weaker side of travis/coldplay-type britpop ...

does most of their stuff sound like "run"?

I'm looking forward to this show..the last one was a pretty good one and I have enjoyed their live DVD quite a bit..it's a shame they didn't get the U2 opening slot as was rumored..

i cant remember what the rest of the new album sounds like, but I think spitting games is more like their earlier albums, which is like, hmmmmmmmmm, bad sebadoh?  not really a fan, so maybe somebody else can give you a better description

the first one, i believe ... i have "vehicles and animals", which has a few really catchy songs on it (the first track, "el salvador," is the standout for me), but nothing too ground-shaking

I took it to mean the former since it says "Athlete" and not "James Yorkston and the Athletes." Also, Athlete and Snow Patrol make for a more logical billing then the alternative.

Yeah, I think I'm sitting this one out. Their second show at the club almost ruined my good memories of their first show.

OH yeah. other than "spitting games", everything i've heard from snow patrol has been slop, especially "run," talk about syrupy.... "

Snow Patrol's current CD is called the Final Straw.  You may find it consistently good IF you like "atmospheric, sonic/rock" (laugh here, please Fico...) Their lead guitar work is derivative of Echo and the Bunnymen.  My favorite cut is "Somewhere a Clock is Ticking", but "Run" is also on this CD. They are probably too uncool and commercial for some boardies (ahem) BUT somehow, there are enuf of us schmoos who like them, that it'll sell out.  Presale for DC, which opened at 10:00 a.m. was gone by 1:00 p.m. today - but they could have only set aside six tickets...   ;)

If you dig there were more opinions posted here last year. Who made the comment on their lyrics? Was it Markie? "I almost cry, I nearly do."   :p  heh good stuff.

I might skip this one too. I loved seeing their first show;  almost empty club (comparatively).  Then last time, packed, with screaming girls.  I loved the show, don't get me wrong, but the crowd was...eh.  Plus, they only play for about an hour (then encore).  They need to get some stamina and do a real show; none of this 75 minute set crap.  Especially now that they're getting a big enough guarantee that the club has to charge $20.00.

I loved the first show too Arlette. Second show, it's not the crowd, but their performance I didn't dig. $20 is still okay to me as I anticpated $25 and up.

Thanks for that walk down memory lane...even Markie grudingly admits to liking them.  Too bad there's no new CD yet.

I love "Wow" from Final Straw -- upbeat, bigger guitars.  I think "Run" is one of my least liked songs from the album -- a bit too slow and fey.  That said, I LOVE this album, and while I agree that their first 9:30 show was great and their second less so, I'd crawl across glass to see 'em.  Okay, soft, not sharp glass, but you get the point.  I listen to that album a lot, even a year later.

Thought this a particularly interesting review from The Onion in light of the discussion and analogies here....

 Snow Patrol
 Final Straw
 (A&M/Polydor/Fiction)

Though the bands have little in common musically, Snow Patrol lived its early years in the shadow of Belle And Sebastian, mostly because the two shared a tiny record label (Jeepster) and a home base (Scotland). But beyond cute images on its album sleeves, there's little twee, fey, or overtly clever about Snow Patrol. In America, the group has been subject to more accurate comparisons, like to U2 and Coldplay, but with its third album, Final Strawâ??released in late 2003 in the UK, and early 2004 in the U.S.â??Snow Patrol hits its stride hard enough to render most sonic analogies only marginally useful.

Gambling on a more muscular, melodic, and direct sound, Final Straw sounds like a brass-ring grab, but these blunt shots at bigness actually suit Snow Patrol's spirit: After years of skirting the margins of pop pomp, the band has becomeâ??perhaps surprisinglyâ??quite adept at it. "Run" grabs the baton from Coldplay's "Yellow" and takes it for a weepy, grandiose jog: It's the Brit-rock equivalent of a power ballad, gauzing through six minutes of simplistic sentiment ("Even if you cannot hear my voice / I'll be right beside you, dear"), yet somehow managing to remain resolutely, wonderfully believable. Final Straw even successfully repeats the formula, both on "How To Be Dead" and the big finisher, "Same."

If it were all grand gestures and hooky choruses, Final Straw might get tired, but it manages enough sideways looks to remain intriguing from stem to stern. "Wow" and "Tiny Little Fractures" both build up nice heads of steam, revealing bits of an American indie-rock influence. (The latter, if taken down a couple of production notches, might pass for a Sebadoh song in a dimly lit room.) "Spitting Games" even compromises one of the album's poppiest moments in the interest of a weird, rewarding finish in which Gary Lightbody's vocals disappear into the abyss. But in the end, Final Straw's most straightforward moments carry the bulk of its emotional weight, proving that when delivered with sincerity, even what seems obvious can prove remarkable. â??Josh Modell

Who knows when tix go on sale....show's in late May, so it could be quite some time.  Snow Patrol did a presale for their whole tour, so I wouldn't gauge based on that.  could be up to a month, I'd say.

Eh, they gotta get what they can outta this album. Listen to their old stuff. Much raunchier guitar. And no, they are not like Keane. Popularity maybe but not sound.
