sorry to jack, but did you read where jesus-in- his-own-mind,  oh i meant sting, fired his chef for being pregnant and wanting time off.  i love the portrait painted by the writer of the biggest a-hole in rock--sorry to those that think billy still holds it.  sorry director, i have never felt the appeal of the police.  i always felt that the police were like if jimmy buffet was trying way too hard to be the rolling stones.

The lady in question got $51,000.  No harm, no foul.  I think an ego is an element you will find in all great lead singers.  From Mick to Daltrey to Bono, the common thread in all the greats is an ego.  LSD.  Lead Singer's Disease.

As far as you not liking The Police, you seem like a cool cat but I knew there had to be something wrong with you.     ;)

Doubt that.  Saw 'em @ Bonnaroo.  I like how they're de-constructing the songs, so to speak.  Different breakdowns, etc.  This will be my 2nd show on the tour, w/ 3 more to come.  Check for me in the 8th row. Any boardie I run into, I'll be happy to buy a drink.  If you see a handsome chocolate-skinned fellow with designer shades on double-fisting some beverages - then it's most likely me.  LOL

I'll be bouncing around between the VIP lounge, my seat, & wherever there's alcohol.  Holla @ a playa when you see him in the street.    :D

My brokeass will not be there. But I am making the trek up for 3 Days Grace.  Let me know how the view is from the the side.  Also let me know if I'll be close enough to shout out a request for it's raining men.

Do IT!  And if you're a cute girl from a dive bar in a west end town, please make sure you find me.    :D

I'm out!  Seein' if I can get there early to squeeze in some roller coasters & get in touch with my inner child . . . .

So by this did you mean that they sound like 50-somethings who prefer to play reeeeeaaaalll slow and that the lead singer wants the audience to perform the songs? (That really, really bugs me about bands. I paid to hear YOU sing, not me and the buncha drunks around me!!)

All in all pretty good show. I have finally seen The Police which is what I wanted to do so badly 24 years ago when I first got hooked on concert-going. I'll leave it to the critics to pick apart the songs, etc. My observations: Sting looked happy, hot and amazing, as usual, and Stewart and Andy looked miserable as hell. I know Stewart was working hard though. What a drum shop he's got! Fantastic drummer! Was Andy ever a good guitarist? He just seemed to be fumbling. Maybe that double chin was getting in the way. What a gorgeous night for a stadium show, eh?

Definitely not worth the $250 I paid and a 5 hour and 20 minute drive from Tysons but a decent show. The next time I slip into a sudden bout of insanity please, please stop me from paying $250 to see a band!

Now back to my regularly scheduled alt. music club shows -- Interpol, tonight, NorVa!

I had seats from the side.  They were great.  Good show.  I thought Andy Summers was really great.  I've never seen a show that big in which the guitarists never switched out instruments.  Summer's red Strat and Sting's battered Jazz must stay remarkably in tune.  Great concert but LOUD.  Had to buy the earplubs after Fiction Plane.

Speaking of which, I think they (Fiction Plane) should have done a Police cover of something Daddy's band didn't do.  Like "Peanuts" or something.  Having a trio fronted by Sting's son is the closest you're going to get to The Police.

Not quite sure what show you were at, but whatever.  To each their own . . . . Sting indeed looked very happy.  I would comment on Stuart, but frankly I couldn't see him behind that BIG ass drum kit.  Never seem so much drummage in my life! Andy was in FINE form.  He's one hell of a fuckin' guitarist, to say the least.  I paid $270, it was worth EVERY penny.  At Bonnaroo, they were really solid.  THIS however, was the amazing show I anticipated.  I had the time of my fuckin' life.  Already got tix for 3 more shows on the tour, and I most likely will buy more.  Matter a fact, I WILL buy more.  They definitely slowed the songs down, but these hits sound like almost completely new songs.  I have a new found appreciation for "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic."  That was one of the many highlights of the show.  They're extremely skilled musicians to say the least.  Sting's bass is really beat up looking, & Andy didn't switch his out either.  (He is a CRIMINALLY underrated guitarist.)  But don't take my word for it . . . .

I'm not entirely sure what else I could have said in my review of the Bay Area show to stop you from going...everything I complained about  in my review you complained about in yours.  Thankfully, I only paid $90.

I've seen many a show, my friend.  I don't tend to operate in hyberbole.  The last show I left that amazed from was Iggy Pop here @ 9:30.  It's pleasing when you have a group/artist on a pedestal, & they live up to your expectations.  Just my perspective, right or wrong . . .

Smackie, I think you may have been expecting the "punky" version of The Police (who did emerge for a nice portion of the show), as opposed to the jazzy/experimental Police which may be the source of your disappointment.  I like how they've played with the arrangements, & made more or less brand new songs out of classic rock standards.  Some people took your position.  Others have taken mine.  From the looks of the other 20,000 people around me minus the girl who named herself after my favorite Pet Shop Boys song, they seemed to lose their fuckin' minds as well.

"Punky" = Police
 "jazzy/experimental" = Sting

I wanted the much anticpated and promised Police reunion.  I got the less talked about Sting solo show with great backing muscians who were handcuffed.  But this has run it's course...

I really am happy that you enjoyed the show.

Eh.  I consider concerts an investment in my happiness.  There's only a handful of acts I would/have pay(id) that much to see.  Police, Stones, U2, The Who, Prince, & Michael Jackson.  That's about it.  (Zeppelin & Floyd, but it'll NEVER happen.)  Case en point, I wouldn't mind seeing Genesis but there is no way on Earth they're worth $225.  That's a fuckin' joke.  I laugh.  Haha.

Am I the only one that thought Flock of Seagulls blew away the Police on the Synchonicity tour?  Probably!

I usually have your back on these things, but the shit I saw at Live Earth spoiled ANY positive memories from seeing the Police in high school, thus no way in hell they're getting another dime out of me unless they can find that senior I got busy with in the Tacoma Dome parking lot, now THAT's a reunion I'd be happy to attend.

YES! This sums it up for me! I must have missed your review of the Bay area show, but I doubt it would have done me any good. I bought my ticket just after they went on sale and prior to the start of the tour with just a hunch that it wouldn't live up to the hype. By 3 p.m. on Saturday I had forgotten all about the show.

Now 48 hours after seeing Interpol AND I AM STILL FLOATING ON A CLOUD!!!!!

I'm with The Director on this one.  Who wants to see a Xerox of 1983?  Well, I guess a LOT of people do with regards to the Police.  Some of you have to take off your nostalgia/rose-tinted glasses.  Andy Summers, Sting and Stewart Copeland are living in 2007.  I don't know what everyone was expecting.  I'm sure if you ask Sting, he's REALLY sorry that "Next To You" didn't rock hard enough for you.

Everybody creams their shorts when Billy Corgan and hired guns play a carbon copy of "Today" but when the three people who created it "play around" musically with a song like "Roxanne" it's heresy.

It totally makes sense to me now why they played Bonaroo.  I'd rather see Summers, Sumner and Copeland "jam" than Phish.  I guess they should have put on everyone's ticket:

"We have matured as musicians.  We won't be wearing the Mad Max outifts from the "Synchronicity II" video, either."

It reminds me of the quote from Muhammad Ali:

"A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life."

 Brian

P.S.  Good pictures, The Director.  My highlights were "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Truth Hits Everybody" and "Driven To Tears."

That's because Corgan isn't charging $200+ per ticket.

I'm all for artists stretching a little and mixing things up a bit.  But when a night out costs as much as a car payment, they need to drop the ego and give the people what they want.

I agree tickets were/are WAY overpriced.  I paid $90 each for mine but wouldn't have paid more.  The seats I got with the Best Buy presale were really good.  That's why I always go for the cheapest seats when I go to a show.  I'm tall.  I can stand in the back and still see.

It's a double-edged sword.  People build shit up just to tear it down.  As someone who was at the Pumpkins & Police shows, I was throughly satisified with both show.  However, the Pumpkins were really good.  The Police were borderline phenomenonal.  Thus justifying the $270 price tag.  In today's concert climate, that price is about right for the seats I wanted.  I'm a "seat snob", so I already what's poppin' before I even jump out there for an on-sale/pre-sale.

P.S.  Good pictures, The Director.  My highlights were "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Truth Hits Everybody" and "Driven To Tears."
Those were my highlights as well.  In addition to "Magic", which I never really got into like that until the show.  "Bed's Too Big . . ." was killer as well.  "So Lonely" of course.  I would have liked to have got a taste of "Spirits In The Material World".  Oh, well.  I got 3 more shows to catch that one.    :D  "Voices Inside My Head" was great as well . . .

At times your theories are somewhat outlandish, but I'm with you 150% on this one.  Killer show, to say the least.  I had the time of my life . . . One of 'em anyway.    :D

Would you go see The Ramones and expect to hear artful renditions of Judy Is A Punk?

I didn't say it had to be a Xerox, but it sure as hell could have been a lot closer to the product they claimed it would be and the one that we haven't seen in 20 years. Otherwise, don't call it a reunion.

I can see Sting do these versions of the songs any given year, but I have chosen not to.  This tour he claims its a reunion, I get suckered in by the marketing and I get Sting versions of Police songs.  Thank god I didn't have to hear his solo crap, but I still would have liked to hear a Police version of a song.  Did they really have to do a jazzy interlude or throw in crowd participation in EVERY song they haven't played as a band in 20 years?  Would it kill them to do just a couple songs as they have in the past?

That's been my point from the beginning.

No.  But you all act like this is some foreign shit, which kinda kills me.  By the time they got to Synchronicity, they were full on in this direction.  The washing away/reigning in of the punk kinda started with Ghost In The Machine & Zenyatta Mondatta.  The Ramones were full-on/the blueprint for punk, while The Police had elements of punk in their music.  These were classically trained musicians who had WAAAAAY more chops than your average punk band.  That's what made The Police special.  They pulled off the punk/reggae thing without sounding like white men fascinated with/raping the culture while tossing in "jazzy twists" .  The Clash were probably the only others that pulled this off as well.  On the other hand, you have i.e. "D'yer Maker" & "Cherry, Oh Baby."  And that's coming from someone who unabashedly loves The Stones & Zeppelin.  (Though The Stones redeemed themselves with "Waiting On A Friend.")

But their catalog has way more punk in it then it has jazz - don't change history because of Stings solo stuff.

I beg to differ.  Go back and listen, friend.

Outlandos - More or less punk
 Reggatta - Punky/reggae
Ghost & Zenyatta - More jazz influences/little reggae
Synchronicity - Culmination of the past 3 albums, pretty much no punk at all.  Even though "Synchronicity II" rocks like a motherfucker, that has NO punk in it & was representative of the direction they were taking.  The catalog shifted so much from "Next To You", "Be My Girl", & "Roxanne" to this point it was ridiculous. And in all likelyhood, had they not become the biggest band in the world & Sting's ego didn't increase tenfold over the course of 5 albums they may not have broken up.  Then again, Sting is documented as saying that he never thought the band would make it past 5 albums so maybe he was always looking t the front door. IMHO, that it what makes The Police stand out from any other group in music history.  They were the only ones that went out on top.  The Beatles "Let It Be" was a mess.  The Stones never left.  (And in the interest of keeping it funky here, tossing my fandom aside The Stones haven't put out a classic album in 27 years. Tattoo You.)  U2, verdict's still out on them.  Clash, Cut The Crap.  Nuff said.  Look at every band of the past 40 or so years that was the "biggest band in the world", The Police were the ONLY ones that left at their height.  That in a nutshell is the history of The Police.

Then Sting went solo, & proceeded to never rock again, seemingly doomed to be the soundtrack to your visit to the dentist/doctor's office for all eternity.  Until now . . . .

I hope they don't release another album, cause anything short of a landmark LP is goiing to tarnish their legacy.  Just my $.02 . . .

I disagree with that.  I'll give you most of "Outlandos D'Amour" but by "Regatta De' Blanc" (their SECOND album) they had gone mostly jazzy/world beat.  "Walking on the Moon," "Bring on the Night," and "Bed's Too Big Without You" aren't even close to punk.  There were two punkish songs on their second album ("It's All Right For You" and "No Time This Time") but after that they were gone into the realm of Sting-ness.

doh! i so meant to write irvine. must have been thinking irving plaza somewhere. only saw sting solo once - the day itself was miserable - had just broken up with bf, and neither of us would give on the tix so we went together. but sting was surprisingly good. and his police stuff was even better - not jazzed up - thank god!  :)

That's awesome.  I had a similar situation once for Natalie Merchant at the Greek Theater, but we had four tickets.  So she took two and I took two.  She brought her best friend.  I brought my ex-girlfriend, the one before her.  They left about half way through - we stayed for the whole show.

That's weird because the only time I've seen Sting solo was in Camden and the opener was...Natalie Merchant.  However, we spent the ENTIRE between set time wating in line for refreshments.  We even missed part of Sting's first song and never got anything to eat or drink.  I've hated the Tweeter center and everyone associated with it ever since.

Anyhow, I think the REAL reason the Police broke up was because if they stayed together any longer they would have been recording their next album up there own asses.  Look at how SERIOUS they are in this, their final video before the break-up:

  Synchronicity II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UlSK4WVZ9A)

Look at how SERIOUS Sting is during the final verse(at about 3:22)!  He really means it!  He doesn't think the whole thing looks silly at ALL! If he could do that without smirking, even a LITTLE, then they HAD to break up.

Contrast this with Nirvana's FIRST video.  During IT'S final verse Cobain can't keep a straight face (around 3:44).

At this point, I find there's no sense in continuing the debate...I've just agreed to disagee with both of you.  But I really do mean it when I say I'm glad you guys enjoyed the show and got what you wanted out of it.

At some point TheDirector and I will get drunk, drop a $20 in the jukebox and wax philosophical on the Police until the rest fo the patrons politely ask us to leave because they're sick of hearing us or the Police - whichever comes first.

I'd have a drink with you but I think you, me and alcohol may produce unintended results.

But I will predict that this tour ends with the following headline:

 THE POLICE BREAK UP.  AGAIN.
 AP

Stewart Copeland reports on his web site that....

There will be no album, no follow up tour, and we may never see them all on the same stage again.  And it's for the best in my eyes.

I feel you on that.  Sting looks like he's ready to spazz on somebody in that video.  I think Sting's something of a nomad.  That could be the only explanation for releasing lute/labrynth album he dropped before he came to his senses & reunited with Stuart & Andy.  What the fuck, was Sting releasing a 22 year late soundtrack for Dune???

It's funny that you mention that.  For about 1.5 seconds, I stepped outside of my great time, thought about you, & actually felt bad.  That you saw a wack show & I had the time of my life.  But no matter.  One day, I may have to touch down in Frisco.  Or one day, you will come back around D.C.  We will jack the shit out of some Bose TouchTone jukebox, while skipping a certain imaginary 1986 remix.  And we will pontificate over Heineken & the greatness of what we saw as The Police.  Until security kicks us the fuck out the venue.

For the record, I hope they don't make another album either.  I'm glad they went out on top, & I'm good with a tour I NEVER thought would happen.  Make sure when you arrive tonight at The Smackie Estates, you dig an old Police record (vinyl, not CD) & crack a cold one for me, friend.  Cause as of now, that greatness has not been tainted.  Thank you for your time.

It's the mouth - quality DSLs on that one that most guys have thought about at one time or another.  Usually it happens during the college years when most guys who are now in their late 20's and early 30's got a little too into chick music because they were trying to show the ladies how sensitive they were and contemplated attending the Lilith Fair because of the music, not despite it.  I still have my Natalie Merchant, Kate Bush, Sarah McLachlan, Liz Phair, and PJ Harvey CDs stuck conveniently in the corner somewhere.

Never quite got to Lilith Fair, but I can't front.  A couple of chicks from college/senior year of high school is exactly what got me fuckin' with Natalie Merchant.  And yes.  Her DSL factor is DEFINITELY poppin'.

And I actually do like "Building A Mystery."  But that's all.

Then again, Sarah MacLachlan was kinda a cutie as well.  Vagina is such a powerful force.

LOL.  I have no beef with anyone.  In the words of the great Seinfeld, "Not that there's anything wrong with that."  I simply saw it as opportunity to answer nkotb's question from yesterday.  Seeing as I occasionally play the racial crusader, that would make me quite the hypocrite.  At worst, my ego won't allow that.    ;)

Just back in town.  Saw the show from Section 5 and I thought it was pretty good.  They sounded a little out of sych on a few songs...but it could have been the large stadium effect.

Best Part - "Can't Stand Losing You".  Sounded fantastic.  Reminds me what an awesome group they are.

Worst Part - Getting the fuck out of the parking lot.  They make the folks at Nissan look like geniuses.  More than 2 hours to get out.

While I so enjoyed revisiting that 'tattered and torn' apocalyptic era Police video (THANKS for that!), it's really not relevant to compare one band's FINAL video to another band's FIRST video.  Of course the Nirvana video is whimsical and lacks seriousness or self-importance.  They were a bunch of Seattle kids who never knew they'd be insanely successful.

Sting is definitely a self-important prig.  He's WAY hotter than Dave Grohl, but I'll take self-effacing Grohl any day....

The secret is to park at Shakey's and then walk about a mile right across the park into Hershey (the town.)  Go right out.  Unfortunately, I didn't do that this time.  I actually slept in my car for about an hour then it took me also another hour to get out of the parking lot.

Hey, it could have been worse.  You could have been there the next night:

 from mtv.com:

"Cops working the John Mayer concert at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania, were busy on Saturday, arresting 63 fans, according to The Patriot-News. Among the arrests were 46 for underage drinking; 14 for disorderly conduct; and three each for public drunkenness, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia."

Question, how do I find out the show information for Police on Friday at Madison Square Garden?  I can't find anything anywhere.  Is there an opener?

Only information I can get is from TicketMaster, which says:

 BEST BUY PRESENTS
 THE POLICE
 LIVE IN CONCERT
 MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
 NO CAMERAS/RECORDERS
 WED OCT 31, 2007 8:00PM

Does that mean doors at 8:00, etc.

Thanks to anyone who has advice.

The opening band is Fiction Plane featuring Sting's son.  You may or may not get The Fratelli's as well, I'm not sure.

And it's been years since I've been to a show at MSG so I'm not sure if that's start time or door opening time.  If I had to guess, that's show start time, with doors opening at 7.

Show starts at 8.  Almost positive Fiction Plane are the openers, but you could get something extra with it being New York & all.  You'll have a great time.

At least the songs the Police are doing are newer than what CSN go out and do on a more regular basis for hefty fees...

Kornheiser, genius...Wilbon, should be banned from every media outlet currently existing and the language in the law should include any future media outlets.  He's a talentless blow hard who thinks if you raise your voice when you say something stupid it magically makes sense.  Jason Whitlock should have his chair, and he should be ran out of Washington.

I really like Jason Whitlock.  I liked his column on the whole Don Imus thing.  Anyhow, did anybody see the show when Whitlock was filling in for Wilbon and they were talking about the Detroit Lions coach who was arrested for driving without pants?  Whitlock mentions a similar experience from his own past when he went "porky pigging" with Derrick Thomas's girlfriend.  The look on Kornheiser's face was priceless.

I'm not an African-American but I have to disagree with your statement that Whitlock is a "hack" when he can make a statement like this:

"Black American culture has been hijacked by idiots. Weâ??ve allowed uneducated people to speak for us and set our agenda. The idiots told us they were going to turn "N--a" into a term of endearment. The idiots told us that if we embrace prison culture/hip-hop culture thereâ??s a pot of gold for all of us at the end of it. The idiots donâ??t tell you about the jail cell or the coffin that awaits 99 percent of the folks who embrace prison culture. There are more "rappers" in jail than in college or working a 9-to-5. That story never gets told. For every Jay-Z or Russell Simmons, there are 2,000 guys in a small sweaty box writing rhymes and fantasizing about a record deal that will never come. I donâ??t really blame the idiots. Theyâ??re the leaders because too many educated black people, particularly our religious leaders, are cowards. Weâ??re afraid to deal with the backlash Bill Cosby endured. Weâ??d rather get invited to Snoop Doggâ??s next party or accept a check from Def Jam rather than stand up for what we believe. "

I'm not an African-American but I have to disagree with your statement that Whitlock is a "hack" when he can make a statement like this:

Hear, here, my point exactly and I AM a black guy.. umm African American.  Director is pissed at him for getting front row at a Police show, taking up two seats, and then blocking his view trying to dance with his big ass during Roxanne.   :p

Just got back from NYC after catching them at the Garden last night, GREAT fucking show! From some of the reviews I read I was expecting some of the songs to be a real jam snoozefest and for Sting to play solo artist onstage but personally I thought the songs were pretty concise with minimal noodling (save "Roxanne" but I was kinda expecting that haha) and it was very much a team effort from my vantage point.  Great sound, stage setup, light show and crowd to boot (almost everyone remained standing for the entire 2 hour show).  So...no complaints on my end.

$56M and you only get 3 measly bedrooms? At least it's "pet friendly". Also nice that they threw in a washer/dryer.

Disgust is my biggest emotion. I'm glad Sting has never gotten a dime of my money.

I kinda wish I'd seen the Police once.... I think they played Pimlico? I think that was the time to do it if you lived in this area and missed them in the 80s but for whatever reason when the Police reunited I had no interest in seeing them.......at the same time I have a visceral almost psychotic dislike for Sting.. usually disliking a musician's personality isn't really an issue for me but in his case I loathe him...I really wanted to see the Police more for Copeland and Summers I guess.... Sting's voice has lost so much range and the Police's music (the songs) hasn't aged that well...

back in the early to mid 80s the Police was one of my favorite bands....I suppose Sting broke my heart when he ended the band and that is rather immature of me...but nothing that has happened since has done anything other than make him seem like a bigger pompous ass than he was then....I should have known what an ass he was when I was reading about how he wrote Synchronicity on the same desk as Ian Fleming wrote 007 and he was reading Jung and blah blah blah...but I was 12!!!!

Was a fan back in the day and agree the music hasn't aged well, but that can be said for a lot of the stuff from that time period.

The Pimlico show got good reviews, from what I recall, but I wasn't at all impressed. The wife and I ended up leaving early.

Bono is probably the musician I despise the most, tho.

Agreed.

Have we just decided that Ted Nugent isn't a musician?  Or Kid Rock?  Or Gene Simmons?  Sure Bono can be a bit preachy, and at time hypocritical, but I don't understand the ire.

It's tough, because, at least to me, this seems like it notes the current musical impact and general douchbaggery of the named artists. That unholy musical trifecta possibly fail to rank as musical entities for most on this board.
Besides Rock, have any of those "artists" have released new work in the past ten years (I can think of Ted's time in that terrible reality show Damnocracy band and knowing that makes me sad)? Do/would people still buy a Ted Nugent or Kiss album?

In that I was meaning to say that those three might be worse people, but not many prescribe any level of musical weight to their legacy. They also have the Donal Trump "real" factor. The idea that they are what they are. Where as with someone like Bono and Chris Martin (and Sting), as adults can we really buy into their hippie or Christian or platitude spitting make the world a better place hogwash as they sit on gilded toilets (assumption) and shelter their wealth.

You guys are just jealous of Sting's ability to have 6-7 hour tantric sex sessions.

I'm not sure if that impacts the price of that loft positively or negatively. I guess it depends on the buyer.

I feel like this also applies to U2 these days.  I mean, I had to figure out how to get rid of their last album when it was forced on me.

Who the hell wants to have sex for that long? I'm sure his wife doesn't. If it's taking you that long, you're doing something wrong.
