Just wondering how many people were aware of and what they thought of the
Six Points Music Festival (http://www.sixpoints.blogspot.com/) coming up in April.
This is the third year and I think the increase in venues and inclusion of D.C. proper and not just Arlington is an obvious and postitive progression. My band played the first year, skipped last year and are hopefully in the mix this year. I personally think it's very cool and kinda exciting. The question is will the musical folks around town think so and get behind it?
Anyone have a thought? Beueller...Bueller....
Lineups will be announced later this week.
-
Well I'm glad you asked because I think a D.C. music festival is a grand idea if people get behind it. I can't wait to see how this turns out. By the way you look very fetching today. Those dirty blue sweatpants really bring out the fire in your eyes.
BUMP!

I read about this last summer and was interested and surprised that no one around here ever talks about it.
As of now, I'm waiting to see who the line up is. One thing you can be sure of is that Andy Zipff(sp?) will be involved...which is a good thing.
-
Andy won the SXSW trip competition On Tap did. They're flying him down and setting him up with a show and lodging. Pretty cool. I played the same night he did at the Austin Grill. Very good guy, good performer and an interesting songwriter. I'm a fan.
Six Points lineups and added venues are coming out tomorrow. We're playing but I'm sworn to secrecy about when/where until it's announced. I'm excited about it though. I think it's 21 shows over 3 nights which must have been a bitch of a job to book and coordinate. Should be fun.

I trust you will keep us posted. ;)
Here's hoping that the weather will be spring-like.

Pharmacist: Congrats on making the line-up. I predict you will have a very fun evening hanging with your show-mates, the Speaks...See you very soon!
-
Is this thing as big at Coachella, Bumbershoot, Austin City Limits, CMJ, or SXSW?
About time we get some music festival action in the DC area.
-
I know you're kidding and all but.....
It's not SXSW, CMJ etc; obviously but it certainly is the biggest local rock festival that I can remember around here. There used to be a thing called the WAMA Crosstown Jam which was the same in concept but miserable in execution. For a festival run by all volunteers in it's third year of existence I think it's a pretty impressive line-up of venuse that they got to participate.
-
Underwhelming line up and most of the shows are at 21+ venues.
I don't see this going anywhere.
-
Do you find the lineup underwhelming because it's all local or it's just the locals they chose? I've heard from a number of bands who now wish they had submitted after seeing the venues that are taking part on weekend nights. Maybe that will encourage a broader base of acts to submit next year.
To the all ages thing, there just isn't a lot of all ages venues around for rock bands to play that would have worked for this thing. Other than Jammin Java and the State Theatre (I think that's all ages), which are both doing shows you have the 9:30 and what else? You can't really have house or church shows at a festival that's open to the public.
-
Underwhelming because of the locals they chose. I would love to see this festival really take off, as there are so many good bands around here who aren't getting the recognition they deserve.
As for all ages venues, I'll just provide a list.
Black Cat (I have never ever seen them turn away anyone under 18.)
Warehouse Next Door
DCAC
Nation
The Norva
Jaxx
American University
-
Could you name some of the locals that you think aren't getting the recognition, seriously not to be snarky at all but just to know who people are digging around town.
Again the organizers were limited to the pool of folks who submitted but hopefully this year's embiggerment (thank you Simpsons) will raise the profile to get a more diverse group to submit for next year.
Is Jaxx all ages? I haven't been there in years.
There is a Black Cat show. I forgot about Nation and WND, you're right that shows could have gone down at those venues.
-
not my opinion, just posting it ...

Six Points -- What's the Point?
It's not exactly CMJ or SXSW, but the D.C. area does have its own music festival. The Six Points Music Festival today announced the lineup for its third edition, which will present shows featuring more than 40 bands in a dozen venues across the D.C. area from April 6-8.
D.C. has a vibrant, wide-ranging music scene that covers just about every genre imaginable, from hip-hop to punk to neo-soul to doom metal to go-go to jazz, and that variety isn't represented in this year's disappointing lineup. For the most part, this year's group of performers falls into the category of pretty straightforward, male-dominated, singer-songwriter/rock. Check out the headliners for the shows -- Shane Hines, Michael Jantz, Army of Me, JunkFood, Emmet Swimming, the Echoes, Brindley Brothers, the Speaks, Monopoli, Justin Jones, Ballyhoo!, Mike Holden. You've got your singer-songwriters (Hines, Jones, Holden), your no-frills rockers (Brindley Brothers, Emmet Swimming), your slightly alt-rockers (Army of Me, Monopoli), your "good time" rockers (JunkFood, Ballyhoo!). There's not a whole lot of diversity there. Now to be fair, it's not like the Fort Reno Summer Concert Series, perhaps the closest comparison to Six Points, is breaking down any diversity barriers with its lineups.
The fact is, the lineup can only be as good as the bands who submitted entries. The festival grew out of the MetroMusicScene (formerly Arlington Music Scene) online message board, and that scene was popular, more or less, with straightforward rock dudes. So it shouldn't be too surprising that those types of bands made up the bulk of submissions and made it through the selection process.
As for that selection process? Well, let's just say the committee didn't go about picking artists in the most rock 'n' roll of manners. In fact, the whole process seemed, well, kind of soulless. "The selection committee rated each of the 194 submissions, on a scale of 0-5, in the areas of Songwriting/Lyrical Content; Vocal, Instrumental and Overall Performance; Originality; and Visceral Reaction." Rating "visceral reaction" on a scale of 0-5? Isn't that sort of against the point? I appreciate the idea of having specific criteria to judge the submissions, but sometimes you just know the best stuff when you hear it.
Six Points is not all that impressive -- yet. None of this year's shows scream "must see," and if they were booked outside of the festival, there would be no real reason to take note. But it's important to remember that Six Points is in just its third year. It takes time to establish a venture like this and to get people outside of a more enclosed scene to take notice. By getting new venues such as the Black Cat, DC9, Jammin' Java and the Mansion at Strathmore to participate this year, things have certainly taken a step forward. Here's hoping the progress continues.

I think there's some snarkiness in there that is predicated by "I'm music writer guy therefore..." but overall it's pretty tame.
Based on the comments it appears I am one of the winners of a popularity contest which makes me all jolly inside. Now I can cast aside the nerds who have stuck with me since childhood and embrace my fellow sociall ladder climbers, much like the lawnmower kid in "Can't buy me love."
OK line up and let me know whose house I should throw bags of poo at first.

Biddyump - Starts tomorrow night.
Koshari has been added to the Iota show.
My hair looks magically delicious.
-
I saw the Speaks open for Old 97's in downtown DC.
They take the awards as worst band I've ever seen.
-
You can get to bed early then. Good times and a full night of beauty rest....who could ask for anything more.
All three bands are pretty different, it should be interesting.

i think there is more diversity at Six Points than the Post lets on:

I agree and applaud even further the wit and aplomb that On Tap is bringing to the fuddled masses as evidenced by the tall sexy fellow who penned this (http://www.ontaponline.com/view_article.php?article_id=10274)
Doodeedoodeeleedoo.

i know you are all going to rag on me because i don't make up a majority, blah blah blah; but i too am pissed at the fact that a lot of these shows are 21+. i WILL be at the black cat friday night, but i'm frankly kind of bummed that the couple of other shows in the "festival" that intrigued me are 21+. oh well.
-
I don't think that's something anyone should give you a hard time about. If I was under 21 and wanted to see a show I'd feel the same way.
-
Apparently there's a happy hour to start things off tonight at Revolution Records, right?
Oh and the Post cracks me up...I swear some people on the forum should be paid sources.
I believed in the lawn mower kid before he was on some knock off hit show. ;)
-
is this thing working?
-
It is now.
Show was fun fun fun by the way, thanks to any of y'all that made it out for the sell out.
