Title: Best place to sell cd's
Post by: chaz on July 23, 2007, 05:22:00 pm
Thinking of selling off pretty much my entire CD collection.  I don't feel like doing it bit by bit...would rather just take it into a shop and sell the whole thing, or as much of it as the shop wanted.

Anyone know what stores in town give the most $$ for used cd's?

Why don't you invite select boardies, myself included, to your home or some other convenient location? i'll bet you could make a lot more $$ off of us than off of a cd store.

What's going on? Finanical difficulty? Or did you find Jesus Christ?

CDepot. CD Warehouse.

 There ya go.

Stay away from CD Game Exchange. They'll give you shit money for your CD's. CDepot has been known to give up to 5 bucks per CD, which is decent.

Have you seen what they charge for a bag of smack lately???  Really though...just don't ever play them.  I buy them, burn them, and put them on the shelf in my closet where they sit and sit.  I'm not set on doing it, depends on how much I can get.  If I do I want to get a chunk of cash all at once, not 50 - 100 bucks here and there.  I'll just fritter that away.  If I sell I want to get a chunk of cash all at once and buy something fun with it  :p  .

It's not local, but the Princeton Record Exchange will appraise your collection and give you an offer.

ebay would bring the most cash for sure, but you said you dont wanna do it bit by bit. you might try to get your collection appraised, then auction off the whole thing and set the reserve price at what they were appraised for. if they dont sell for as much, you could just sell em to the place that appraised em.

You could give boardies first chance at your collection then take the rest of it to one of those places later in the day. You'd still get your $$ all at once but we'd love you forever.

Rob steps into the room like an Undeserving, and carefully drops to his knees to examine the singles, each pristine in a plastic sleeve: the original God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols, original Otis Reddings, Elvis Presleys, James
Browns, Jerry Lee Lewises, Beatles... on and on.  The mother lode.  Rob is doing the best to control the onset of hyperventilation.  He dares a glance over his shoulder to her to see if this is a joke. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6Esanwk37c)

Thanks, smackie.  That's the exact thought that went through my mind when I read this.

I wouldn't be so kind.  Not by a long shot.

Too bad I'm an idiot and found the video clip after I scoured the net for Chapter 6....

The collection isn't that mind boggling or anything, but maybe I should do that.  I only have about 200-250 cd's.  I never really considered cd's collectable (as opposed to vinyl) at all, maybe that's why I'm not attached to it.

I used to have a much better collection in terms of rarities and the like, but sold off all my vinyl and cd's 12 or 15 years ago.

It would be wierd meeting you all on the premise of selling cd's....I've only ever met one boardie in person.  Especially when it came down to pricing things and haggling.  I suppose I would just set a standard price that applies to all CD's and just leave it at that(except for boxed sets and maybe for things that dont have cases or liner notes a-la lala.com, cracked cases etc.).  What's the average going rate at a used store these days for reasonably desirable titles in good condition?

Hmmm...and where to have such an event?

www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com) .. if you're seriously not averse. I've made about $200 in 2 weeks recently just selling stuff I haven't listened to in years out of my (1000+) cd collection >.>

It always amazes me how much stuff I like goes out of print. I'm such a collecting geek, there's just no way that I would part with a big chunk of my CDs. At some point music will probably be completely digital, and CDs will become as much of a novelty as vinyl. But hey, if you need the space and aren't attached to the actual product, then go for it. The problem is that most places (rather than giving cold hard cash) are more generous with trade-ins. Store credit is where I seem to make the most.

Over the years I've become increasingly unattached to the actual physical artifact of the cd.  Vinyl was another story, but I let all that go during desperate times.  I'm sure I've got some cd's that are out of print, but I've got it all digitally and could get it again if need be.

Yeah I know I could do better with credit, but really don't want to go that route.

That said, could anyone that might be interested in meeting up for some sort of liquidation sale chime in?  I don't want to bother of only one or two people show.  I'd imagine used stores sell cd's for 8 or 9 bucks a pop?  My stuff would probably be about 5 - 7 each ....I'll put a little more thought into pricing though...would want it to be somewhere between what a store would give me and what they sell used disks for.
