Being Dominican I'm obviously awaiting the start by the minute...the pitching is thin but the batting order will be superb for us...I take it Smackie, Rhett and Hoya might care...don't know if there are any other baseball fans here...

any word on if manny is going to play?
i've heard the early rounds will only be on espn deportes ... that's crap!

granting your being able to get past the venezuelans... care to put a friendly wager on the cuba vs. dominican republic game?
-
It's hard to get really excited about it when the majority of the players aren't that excited about it. And I'm not just talking about the US players...
Of course, I'm excited for the start of baseball so I'm looking forward to it. I think this tourney is 12-20 years away from mattering though.
-
I'm interested in a curious sort of way. I'll be watching.
I'm also looking forward to baseball season. I already have tickets for Fenway, Wrigley, and whatever the White Sox are currently calling their stadium. I also plan on seeing Mariners, Orioles, and Nationals home games this year.

It will really come down to pitching..,at an all-star caliber level we only have Bartolo Colon and Pedro if he can with his bummed toe..
our line-up may look like this:
Alfonso Soriano-2b
Miggy Tejada-SS
Albert Pujols-1B
Big Papi- DH
Vladi- CF
Manny (if he shows up)-RF
Moises ALou-LF
Aramis Ramirez/Adrian Beltre-3b (thanks! A-Rod)
ALberto Castillo-C (no talent there)
the bench has some speedsters and very good role players...relief pitching is good..concerned about starting pitching but seeing as there will be a 75pitch limit for starters, mid-relievers and a good bullpen will be more important...
lets put a couple of Guiness behind this as a friendly wager Sal...

well, the geniuses at ESPN bought the rights to play all the games to a tournament that is scheduled over Championship Week for basketball.
thats why you wont see much on ESPN or ESPN2 until the 10th or 11th.
yeah, and the quarterfinals and semifinals going on while the 1st 2 rounds of the NCAAs??? how stupid.

I would just like to know how excited everyone is about the Orioles getting beaten down again this year?? No moves in the offseason to amount to shit and a disgruntled superstar to boot, this team is going to roll to a wonderful, enchanting well below .500 season once again! Thanks Peter Angelo for treating the fans to another lackluster season of misery! We love ya,Buddy!

the O's are going to be great this year (that is, if you call 5th place and 30 or so games out great, mind ya)
Ill probably watch some of the classic games, but its not really compelling....it seems that more people have said theyre not playing then are playing, and I dont think the players are really going to take this seriously

Canada 8, U.S. 6
Canada Beats the U.S. at Its Own Game
By MURRAY CHASS
PHOENIX, March 8 â?? Miracle on ice? How about miracle on grass?
How else to explain Canada's 8-6 victory over the United States on Wednesday in their second game of the World Baseball Classic? If the Tampa Bay Devil Rays won the World Series this year, it would not be as stunning.
The Canadian victory plunged the United States into a perilous position. If the Americans lose to South Africa on Friday, they could be eliminated. But they could also be eliminated before the South Africa game if Mexico defeats Canada on Thursday night by 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1.
But if Canada wins that game, and the United States beats South Africa, the Americans and the Canadians would advance. The top two teams in each pool advances to the second round.
Canada won Wednesday by building an 8-0 lead in the first five innings against Dontrelle Willis, Al Leiter and Gary Majewski, then holding on as the United States erupted for six runs in the fifth inning, the last four on Jason Varitek's grand slam. With two on and two out in the eighth inning, Adam Stern jumped against the center-field fence to snare Chase Utley's long fly ball.
"It's a very quiet clubhouse," Buck Martinez, the United States manager, said after the game. "Guys feel like they got kicked in the stomach."
The loss at Chase Field was shocking, and it came against a team that nearly lost Tuesday night to South Africa, the weakest team in the 16-team tournament. Canada scored four runs in the ninth inning for an 11-8 victory.
"We felt we were kicked in the stomach last night playing South Africa," Ernie Whitt, Canada's manager, said.
Whitt had been questioned earlier in the week for switching his starting pitching rotation, moving up Erik Bedard, a Baltimore major leaguer, to face South Africa and naming Adam Loewen, a low-level Baltimore minor leaguer, to pitch against the United States.
The left-handed Loewen allowed three hits and three walks in three and two-thirds innings. No one scored.
"It's a coming-out party for Loewen, and he handled it very well," Whitt said. "He did a great job and kept us in the game."
Willis gave up six hits and two walks in two and two-thirds innings. Five runners scored.
"I didn't do anything right today," Willis said. "When I had to throw strikes and get them to put the ball in play, I couldn't do it."
Martinez said Willis might have been "a little pumped up," adding, "I think the adrenaline got him."
Stern, a 26-year-old outfielder, was the star for Canada. A marginal major leaguer with the Boston Red Sox, Stern drove in four runs, slugging, in order, a triple, a single and an inside-the-park home run. Utley robbed him of a single with a nifty play at second base.
But Stern, the last hitter in the lineup, paid back Utley in the eighth with the tying runs on base. Utley drove the ball to the wall in center field, and Stern banged against the wall and made the catch, preserving the 8-6 lead.
"I knew he smoked it, and I knew it was going deep," Stern said. "I just put my head down, ran to a spot and said, 'Come on, baby, don't hit the facing.' It hung up long enough for me to get under it. I kind of prematurely jumped at it, but it was smoked, and those are one of the things we need to go our way."
The Americans had one threat left, but after Alex Rodriguez singled with two out in the ninth for the only United States hit after Varitek's grand slam, Mark Teixeira grounded out.
Martinez said he was not shocked by the loss, even though Canada had nearly lost to South Africa. "Obviously, they got a wake-up call last night," he said. "They rode the momentum of their win last night."
The United States aided the Canadian cause with faulty fielding. A line drive by Stubby Clapp eluded Vernon Wells in right field for a first-inning triple, and Stern's drive to the left-field corner skipped past Matt Holliday in the fifth and rolled into left-center, enabling Stern to race around the bases for a home run.
"We were really pumped about playing in this game," Stern said. "We knew it was going to be a good game."

i havent watched this , but i see that Canada beat the US. luckily, the US made the rules benefit them so that they can still win the tiebreaker and not have to play extra games. Canada will go home, US will go on, even though Canada beat the US. makes sense to me.

Well, one of the three 2-1 teams had to sit out. I mean Canada beat the U.S., Mexico beat Canada, and the U.S. beat Mexico. The biggest difference was Canada was the only team to get blown out.....and that was against Mexico of course, that's what killed them. But doesn't the U.S. still have to beat South Africa to make it? It would be one of the biggest upsets in history I guess......GO ROCKET ROGER!!!!!!!!

I am just saying, a tie breaker game wouldnt have hurt anyone!

It would have to be a three team round robin.

Which had already occured, in a roundabout way.
You have to have someway to break the tie and run-differential seems as fair as anything else.

I couldn't care less who wins; I hate baseball. If anything, I'd want the US to lose just for laughs.

I saw the US come from behind to beat Japan on Sunday. However, I saw South Korea beat them last night (highlights only). The only good thing is that the games don't suck and no major injuries have took place!

the lack of outrage/discussion over that situation proves how little people in this country care about this thing ... one of the most bullshit sequences i've ever seen in baseball, i don't care if a replay showed the guy should have been out, it was handled so horribly
-
Originally posted by HoyaParanoia:

But in the end, didn't the right person make the call? Whether it was right or wrong, he still should have been the one making the call.
Let the real season begin!!!!!!!!
Who do I take with the number 8 pick, it's a fantasy league not roto and 16 teams protected six players......Utley, Perralta or Dunn? I'm kind of high on Peralta since good hitting shortstops are hard to come by.

Well I'm chuffed that my home team will be in the semis in San Diego...against Cuba or Puerto Rico, I think we'll be in the finals..
Sad not many people seem to care...I for one have been hooked and Sal now owes me 2 beers which is even better...

Great game last night. And seeing the faces of the Venezuelan's after losing told me that some folks are taking this seriously.

Did you see the Venezeulan (I think he was next to Freddy Garcia) who was caught on camera picking his nose? Nasty.

Smackie..maybe Americans don't care...but I can vouch for the Cubans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans and Venezuelans...this is bigger than Olympics for us..finally we get to showcase our talent at our own "World Cup" if you will...everyone home is glued to everygame...even when our team isn't playing...

I am not a baseball fan, but yesterday at home watched part of the Cuba Puerto Rico game and found it to be much more interesting game than a Yankees Red Sox game in the MLB finals or conference finals wherever it is that they meet.
Fico, de que areas del pais son la mayoria de jugadores? Santo Domingo, San Pedro, Santiago... alguna zona en particular de donde salgan los mejores jugadores?

Barcelona, it has really evolved with the years... back in the 80s it was mostly all about shortstops and infielders...most of them from San Pedro de Macoris (Pedro Guerrero, Tony Fernandez, Jorge Bell, Sammy Sosa, etc..)..the Dodgers and Blue Jays were the first teams to really establish proper academies...
A lot of the new batch of players which includes a lot of power players hail from Santo Domingo, San Cristobal and outskirts such as Haina, Manoguayabo, etc... I'd say it's about 70% Santo Domingo/San Pedro with the rest from all around..
And I agree about the following and intensity the games have...my grandma is forcing herself to take naps in the afternoon so she can stay awake till midnight to watch the games...my grandma is not one to show much emotions and she cracked to tears today when she talked about the loss to Cuba yesterday...

If only the Koreans had lost.

Ok, now that we are out, let the real season begin. My draft is this next weekend. Hopping a flight to Maine and drafting a great team.

I never thought the US team would do all that well, on paper they were just not as good, and had too many question marks. I just like the fact that Encarnacion and Pujols are getting some early competitive at bats. Although neither seem to be swinging the bat that well.
It was also nice to see Molina show off his defense in the late innings for Puerto Rico and the man I hope is the Cardinals future manager get some more experience, Jose Oquendo.

i think one of the keys is that many of the latin hitters played winter ball and had a chance to get in a rhythm ... in the spring, pitchers always have a huge advantage over hitters because hitters simply take time to get into a rhythm ... US had absolutely no offense

That is true...someone like Miguel Tejada is the Dominican's Cal Ripken, despite being an all-star and constant MVP candidate for the past 5 years he suits up from day one to play the full winter leage season that starts in October...he is the most respected ballplayer in the DR right now..
I know it's impossible to be in top shape right now, but the WBC wasn't obligatory...players volunteered and the tournament was annonced many months ago...if I was a player representing my country and agreed to take part in the classic I would've been working out for many weeks in advance like a lot of the latin players did (and Roger Clemens from the US)..as much as I would've liked to have someone like Manny on the line-up he did the right thing in saying he wouldn't be in shape and wouldn't take part in it...I think every player owed their national team to be ready for this tourny...using the not being in top-form excuse sounds like a poor/irresponsible excuses to me..

do people think any less of Pujols because his family left the Dominican when he was a teenager and he went to school here?
-
Not at all...
You can't hold a grudge on him or his family for seeking a better living (I'd say over 95% of the Dominican players come from poor to extremely humble origins)..and it wasn't a choice he as a teenager had a saying on...most importantly, he has never neglected the country.. and as people in St.Louis know, he's an outstanding chap off the field as well...
People home really feel proud about poor people done good... would people in say PG county be upset if one of their own made it big and moved to a mansion in Potomac?? (genuine question btw, wasn't raised in the states so not sure how it works...still baffled by the keeping it real ethos..)

I think some would certainly resent it, but I think it would be more based on how the person with new found wealth acted towards those who were still poor, I think there is pretty poor class relations in the us in general
Pujols does seem to be a great guy off the field, although I have never met him, just seen stories about his charity work. I just didnt know if he was held to the same respect as guys like Tejada and Ortiz back in the Dominican.
