And the insane schedule of shows begins...it's been ages since I've seen most of the folks from the Board. Who's going to what??
I'm missing several shows because the schedule's just too hectic (I just have to take a night off and skip Beth Orton, for instance) or I missed out on tickets.
Here's my list, which I think should stay pretty steady as it's overly full:
The Subways, 9:30 (Sat, 3/4) $10
New Pornos/B&S, 9:30 (Sun, 3/5)
The Cloud Room, BC (Wed, 3/8)
Metric, 9:30 Club (Thu 3/9)
The Pogues, 9:30 (Fri, 3/10) $58
The National, BC (Wed, 3/15)
[Out of town 3/16 - 3/20]
Animal Collective, BC (Tues, 3/21)
$13 should I go to this show??
The High Strung, Mar 23, DC9
Magic Numbers, The Elected, 9:30, (Mar 23)
[Out of town 3/24 - 3/27]
Arctic Monkeys, 9:30 (Mar 27)
The Editors, Stellastarr, 9:30 (Mar 29)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 9:30 (Apr 3)

3/19 - John Doe @ Iota (probably)
3/20 - Ray Davies @ 9:30

-
Personally, the last Animal Collective show at the Black Cat was a high-light for me last year. I thought they were fantastic, and my wife (who only really knows the poppier songs on Sung Tongs) loved it as well, even though they only played maybe two tracks from that album.

-
actually i'm glad the High Strung are playing on the 8th, that way there will be absolutely no regrets about missing the hype that is cyhsy... the high strung destroyed the last time they played jj.
the high dials show is april 9th... watch who you spill your drink on at the show, as it might turn out to be j. luc freedom who digs them band big time. if there is wapo write-up, hopefully it doesn't fill the club to the brim... but neko's in town that night.
-

ugh. Why did the Brindley Brothers have to be added to the High Strung/Capital Years lineup. With an 8 pm start time and a 11 pm curfew, that probably means a short set by the headliner?
-
April is shaping up nicely as well:
I'm taking it one month at a time!
But yeah, there are some good uns in April
-
My concerts so far this year:
January -
February -
and my schedule so far in the upcoming months:
March -
April -
May -
Pretty exciting eh?

i thought it was the bros themselves...

I think the father is the money behind the place, and the brothers run it. Still, I didn't really see a reason to add themselves to the mix. Maybe other than the fact that the last time High Strung played there, it was sparsely attended.

-
I'll play:
3/5 B&S
3/11 Bluestate (DJ's @ BC)
3/23 Jenny Lewis*
3/24 Ted Leo @ BC, if I can somehow get tickets
3/25 Ted Leo @ UofR, Plan 9 has tickets
3/29 Editors/stellastar
* When I first heard Rilo Kiley they grated on my nerves but there was still something endearing about them. However, this week I heard some of Rabbit Fur Coat and I was immediately won over.

my first impression was that the Von Bondies do it better than they... i assumed they fell in with the same new wavey guitar wave of brit-rock bands, but more likely they are the tail end of garage rock reinvented for the 00's not bad just heard it done better..
-
Where is this??

Surprised noone is going to the South show on 3/30... better than the Arctic Monkeys any day...

Nothing earth-shattering. Just fun rock'n roll.
Here's a show review from Chromewaves (http://www.chromewaves.net/index.php?itemid=2127)
And, like every other self-respecting major-label band masquerading as an indie, they are on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thesubways)

And I think Charlotte is fairly attractive for a Brit.

What no love for Two if By Sea, Asobi Seksu at DC9 on March 8th? You can't all have tickets to Clap your hands or Cloud Room. Oddly enough, both bands we nearly had play DC9 last year. Guess we missed the boat.
High Dials with Burnside Project and TBA on April 9th is a bigger show that could draw a ton of folks, or not, as it is a Sunday. But we're obviously hoping for a ton...
-
Nah, the people with taste will be at the High Strung show. ;)

3/7 mogwai @ sonar
3/10 pogues @ 930
3/11-3/22 - IRELAND TRIP (what a way to 'pre-game' with the pogues show heh)
-
I've gotta say, lists of what shows people you don't know are going to makes for some pretty boring reading. Anyone agree?
-
Please not another choice on March 8th. I went to something like 2 shows in 4 months, and now there are 4 on one night. Unacceptable.
I keep expecting the High Dials to show up on a Black Cat or 9:30 undercard, but I guess their last 2 shows at Velvet Lounge really weren't that packed. Maybe the buzz-factor on this one will push them over...

Kinda like this...
Coldplay
B&S
Arctic Monkeys
Glenn Tilbrook
-
Not necessarily. I may not know them, but if I see overlap in our ticket buying there's a good chance I'll want to check out the bands on their list I haven't heard of.

Actually there are three brothers (two in the band) who have stake and claim in the joint. Dad is not...he just fills in at the door from time to time.
No, the headliner will not have a shorter set. Generally headliners will go on at 9 (even with two openers). I'll double-check set times if they have them at this juncture.

See...I had High Dials in my calendar for DC9 on 3/23...mess up on my part I guess.
According to their calendar: http://www.thehighdials.com/shows.htm (http://www.thehighdials.com/shows.htm)
April 9 @ DC9
(April is becoming a huge month too)
SXSW is taking my time and moohlah, thus skipping many shows here.
I will miss National. :(
I will try to make it back for John Doe @ Iota. Hoping it won't be too crowded so I can get in...
3/8 CYHSY tickets - I might put the tickets up for grabs and roll the dice at SXSW. (Although, High Strung is also at SXSW).
Tentative:
Garrison Starr @ Iota 3/5
Kathleen Edwards @ Birchmere 3/29
Stereolab @ 9:30
Artic Monkeys @ 9:30 (I'm outta the loop - is this sold out? Off to look...)

Nope, I love it. I suppose I know enough people to be interested, but I think if's fascinating to see a full month's slate of shows for a person. How their preferences dictate the overall calendar.

Also. I noticed that not many of you had March 28th on your lists of shows. You probably aren't fans of Eisley, but I will urge you all once again to PLEASE check out the first opening band, Simon Dawes. They remind me very much of a fusion between The Walkmen and Bowie...and still, very different. They have a really interesting sound and a fabulous live energy. And, I'm not sure when they're going to be back again; so PLEASE go check them out. Seriously. You will NOT be disappointed.
Plus, you'll totally be the first person on the East Coast to be into them.

just go listen to them. if you like them, go see them play. it's very simple.

So who is going to be at the Subways show? Sounds like a good night for a little post show backbar forum action.
I'm seriously considering a brought to you by the letter D edition for the DJ setlist.
Detroit, Dayton, DC, Jim Diamond, D4, Drive-by Truckers, not sure where The Jam "Going Underground" will fit though....

I thought there was a chance with the Brazilian Girls, you like them, right? Or saw them at a festival on the West Coast or something like that?
-
Saw Brazilian Girls at festival and hated them.
I'd be interested in seeing Jenny Lewis, maybe, but I'll be out of the country at that time. And obviously, I'd see them at the Birchmere and not the Cradle.

Well, given that I live 15 mins from one and 5 hours from the other.
Not to mention the Cradle is a total smoke den. Or is it nonsmoking now?

No, I was agreeing. I would go to Birchmere if not for Prodigy being the same night.
Cat's Cradle is still allow smoking (or at least did last time I was there) but it wasn't awful.

How big is the Birchmere, by the way?

cat's cradle is non-smoking. has been for a year or two. i havne't been since 03, but the policy has changed. i'm looking forward to seeing this for myself.
-
There is a seated room and then the room with the bandstand. J. Lewis is playing the latter.
Seating capacity in the main room is 500. I would imagine the capacity for the bandstand is less than that.

Really? Guy smoked all during Dinosaur Jr. last year right next to me.

I saw an 80 year old woman smoking inside the station while waiting for the Metro train. Doesn't mean it was legal.
I almost roughed her up because of it, but I held back.

True, but I would've assumed someone would've said something had it been banned in the venue.

Rhett, we get it, you're taking a trip to Spain....theres no need to mention it in every thread.
-
Will you miss me?
Should I post on my wife's blog while I'm gone, and link y'all to it? Or just give you daily summaries straight on the board?

This is the 2nd time I've read that assumption on The High Dials shows in DC by people who weren't there and it is so wrong. I wasn't at their last show at the Velvet but I did attend their Black Cat (Backstage) and 1st Velvet Lounge shows and they were both packed. Great shows too. Personally, I'm dying to see them play at the 9:30 Club but I don't like Neko Case and just don't have the extra money to throw on a ticket for a show that I'm only half interested in. If I can swing it, I'll go to the DC9 show instead.
3/7: Mogwai - Sonar (maybe)
3/26: Dreamend - DC9
And Betty, I do have plans for March 28th but at a different show.
3/28: Dead Heart Bloom - Iota
-
Let me rephrase that. I was at both Velvet Lounge shows and, while they were pretty full, perhaps I shouldn't assume that the group would necessarily make the jump up in venue. I haven't been to that many VL shows though so I don't have much reference.
Unless I'm mistaken again, I think the DC9 show is in lieu of the 9:30 gig opening for Neko Case. This seems to be the one date on the mini-tour where they split venues.

Okay, point taken. It just sounded like you weren't there. ;)
Personally, I'm kind of surprised that its taken them so long to play the 9:30 Club with their growing local (and national...they just have a relatively very strong Baltimore/DC fan base) hype. But I do fully realize there are a whole lot of issues involved from any number of things involving tour management, to perceptions by anyone involved to touring issues to God only knows what else.
Though I don't know for a fact, I was under the impression that they would open for Nekko and then run over to DC9 for a headline gig. Sounds tough but after seeing them show up at the last minute and then set up without a sound check at the Velvet and still put on a good show, I think they can pull it off.
Redsock, care to clarify? Or do I need to go straight to the source?

Sure thing Jag. To my knowledge, some dates of the Neko tour were booked before the High Dials jumped on board, and the DC show was confirmed long before I heard from the band that they were opening on dates. This was originally supposed to be in March, but life gets in the way sometimes for bands trying to do it themselves. Since they would be in town anyway, it made sense to reschedule the show for that date. They are not playing at 9:30 that night. Maybe we can swing a Neko afterparty though...
Hope you can make it Jag. What about Two if By Sea and Asobi Seksu, seems right up your ally?

Thanks for straighening that out.
Yeah, those bands are right up my alley but can't make any commitments as of yet. All depends on a few factors as I have major money/travel/work issues to plan my life around. Really sucks but that's my reality.

Oh, brother. What a load of loop-hole bull.
We all know that it was done so as not to place undo pressure between the performers, management and the fans which would result in a whole lot of pissed off people all because some asshole band refuses to abide by some law. By 'asshole band', I'm refering to any band or performer who would insist on smoking onstage even though it's against the law for everyone else in the room.
-
what about smoking in plays, that seems to be a fairly common prop in theatre
-
Originally posted by HoyaParanoia:

But that is truly a part of the performance. Same with that idiot Steve O...or whatever that jackass's name is. He actually does use cigarettes in his performance. But when a band just happens to smoke onstage while they are playing, it is not an actual part of the performance. The loop-hole is a convenience just to keep the peace that no one wants to deal with. Or maybe the loop-hole was designed for when it is truly a part and it's often over-looked just to keep the peace.
