So, Black Cat has OK Go on their schedule for Sat., Feb 7.
I'm, of course, out of town. Will be in NY, so *hoping* they'll be there on Friday....but there's nothing in Pollstar or on the OK Go website (which looks a month or more out of date).
Just wondering if anyone here has news or knows where to get it.
-
A number of board members are going to laugh at you for liking this band. But don't be deterred, sometimes that's a compliment.
-
You might want to go on the corporate lawyer chatboard and ask their dad what the schedule is.
-
I will not be deterred, Rhett. Whatever it is they're supposed to be, I came to them unbiased and I really enjoy the two albums I have.
God knows they're no worse than Bright Eyes, which I think is the worst band I've heard in ages, but has more indie cred. I just don't give a frig.
-
Having heard OK Go live before, I can't think of a much more unsatisfying thing to do than go see them again.
That being said, I saw Bright Eyes too, and much much prefer his CD's over his live sound. They both kinda suck live. There, happy?
-
Hmmm, yeah, happy. I'd still like to give OK a try....I won't break my back trying to do so, but what the hey. And maybe I'll find a hot 23 year old to mack on! ;)
-
okay, bags, god knows i loves you, but comparing ok go to bright eyes and saying the latter sucks more is just a testament to ... skewed taste. bwa ha ha ha. i bought ok go's album, listened to it, threw up, burnt it, and then never thought of it again until now.
-
Yeah, I don't know why I brought up Bright Eyes, except that I heard a couple songs last night and I think it is so wretched. But in answer to Rhett, they seemed like an example of an indie cred band that I just don't get (but don't disparage -- I don't get it, but also don't care if OK Go aren't all creded out....I like 'em).
Don't know how you could throw up...but, it's what makes the world go 'round.

hmmm, I have seen Bright Eyes 3 times, 2 of them were pretty bad, but the show before last at 9:30 club was one of the best shows I have ever seen by anybody
-
Vomiting makes the world go round?
-
i aint got no indie cred either.
i'm sitting here playing that great new band, Fountains of Wayne.
go ahead and vomit and make the world go around.
-
FoW is the bomb. I'll take 'indie loser' any day if I get to listen to FoW....
-
it is amusing to me that the people who talk about cred are primarily the people who claim not to have cred, I wonder how many people there actually are who pick up a cd and wonder to themselves if it has enough cred
-
Probably only those who could be instant hires at Pitchfork.

did Ok Go open for the Vines or was that a different show? dunno which band was worse.. sorry.
-
wasn't at the show, but yes they did.
also opened for phantom planet, but we arrived too late to catch all but the last song

saw PP too but probably not the same show as it was a good while ago. The Vines aren't so bad on record though methinks, there were a lot more ballads than I was expecting, and their 2 singles still get me going.
-
I think, pollard, it's about the lack of cred. "Hmm, look at this CD. Yeah, but it's supposed to be really mainstream -- something the kids like." I can see that sentence running through some heads in a record store.

And about a year ago, Ok Go played the 9:30 Club twice, with Superchunk opening both nights. They're both on Merge (and the assumption I made was that Merge was hoping OK would bring in a younger, new audience for the 'Chunk).
I've never seen Ok...so I have no clue what their show is like.
-
OK-Go is on Capitol.
I don't think Superchunk opened for them at 9:30, but i could be wrong on that one.

i think that was the get up kids
-
DAMN -- you're right!! I confuse the two bands because I got their albums at the same time. I like the Get Up Kids way more -- in fact, I think I've been thinking of them all along! But I do have Ok Go, and it's okay. I'm going home now to listen to them both.
Man, suddenly I feel old, and as if I'm losing my mind. I was thinking of Get Up Kids. Damn.
-
Well, I'm an idiot, but....
At Recher Theatre â?˘ 512 York Road, Towson, MD:
MARCH 2004
Su 14 Get Up Kids
-
Either you are are completely senile, or that was the most elaborate get out of liking one of the worst live acts I have ever seen. Which is it to be?
-
I must be senile, because I'm listening to Ok Go now and it's fine. It's catchy, upbeat -- not earth shattering, but got a little jellyfish in there.
Again, they may suck live, but I like the album.
Get Up Kids are better, and I was thinking of them, but I won't try to back out of my declaration that I like Ok Go.
Hey, we all have guilty pleasures....(though I don't know why this is quite so 'guilty').
-
Too late. You've outed yourself. You're credless. You might as well hang out with Rhett.

I wonder if Bagster is the only person who is not in some way related to OkGo, that likes OkGo?

Well, we got a good idea, so we pulled off the road.
Got some Molly Hatchet going on the stereo
I said, "Let's get out the nitrous and let the windows go up"
Now I can't stop laughing, can't stop laughing

I saw Molly Hatchet at Jaxx last year. There was only one original member of the band left and he dedicated the encore to his cardiologist's brother, who was in the audience.
I think their next tour is going to be sponsored by Lipitorâ?˘
-
I have a vivid memory of my cousin Mark, who grew up in Daytona Beach, gushing about Molly Hatchet and Rainbow at a family reunion. I wonder if he's a fan of Britpop as well?
-
Molly Hatchet? Christ, y'all are such rednecks. :)

Richie Blackmore Rulezzz!

I saw Molly Hatchet in 1980 at the Palladium in NYC. The Michael Schencker Group(ex-Scorpions, UFO) opened. So there.
Bags, I think OK Go opened for the Donnas at 930 club early last year. But i'm not positive--you weren't there, I went with Sing Sang and Rog. don't really remember much about OK Go. The donnas were fun...

I saw Ok Go open for the Donna's i believe it was and thought they were quite good live. But of course thats just my bad taste in music according to the board members.

Yup, that's it. I was out of town and had to miss the show. And afterwards, I got the Ok Go album and liked it.
But it's all moot to me now, because I'm MUCH MUCH luckier and will be seeing Urge Overkill in NY that weekend instead. WAY better!!!
;)

Were there 2 Donna's shows? I went to one just to see Superdrag open and left before the Donna's played. I know I saw okgo with The Vines. (I just remembered, wasn't there a 9:30 Club Donna's show as well, is that what people are talking about?)

UO will be way better--maybe they'll pull out the U-R-G-E shirts for the respective band members again...
Pollard, the show i was referring to was a Donnas-OK Go show at 930 club that i saw. i think it was early 2003.

Thanks, Random. Cool to know. Though, I now have tickets for Urge Overkill on Friday in NY, and am sticking with that show. Maxwell's is a great venue, but not worth staying in NY Sunday night for.

I'm sure this show was sparsely attended by boardies, but the review is interesting:

OK Go
Three-quarters of the way through its set at the Black Cat on Saturday night, OK Go offered the sellout crowd a choice among three covers: Tommy James and the Shondells' "Crimson and Clover," Elvis Costello's "Oliver's Army" and Toto's "Hold the Line." With guest help from keyboardist Burleigh Seaver, the Chicago quartet tore into the last song, which made the most sense, since the song's crashing power-pop chords and thin layer of cheesiness are also key components in OK Go's infectious rock-and-roll formula. And though its hour-long set Saturday was centered on a handful of new songs, OK Go showed no signs of deviating from the clever, squiggly power pop that made its debut album so enjoyable.
Lead singer and guitarist Damian Kulash -- he of the mischievous, Ashton Kutcherish good looks -- seems to be the chief reason the group's live show has become so popular. (He even elicited female squeals when he chugged a bottle of water.) Whether bounding through the bratty "Don't Ask Me," shouting through the fist-pumping chorus of "Get Over It" or inviting two single members of the audience to slow-dance onstage during "It's Tough to Have a Crush," he was an entertaining, goofily energetic frontman. Which was important, since OK Go's playing, while competent and lively, offered no new insights into the band's songs.
But breaking new ground in concert is probably of little importance to any band that would encore with a truly funny boy-bandish dance routine (Kulash described it as "like a ballerina trapped in the body of a squirrel") to its bubblegum ode "C-C-C-Cinnamon Lips."
