Title: Wednesday Roll Call
Post by: redsock on March 07, 2006, 12:12:00 am
OK, so what's it going to be:

1.Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at 9:30

 2.Cloud Room at Black Cat

 3.High Strung at Jammin Java

 or

4.Two if By Sea and Asobi Seksu at DC9

The good news is you could try to get tickets to #1 and "settle" for #4 if it doesn't go well. And you could probably go to #3 and still make it back to the city for #4.

So, what's it gonna be boy?

Not unless you have a time machine. High Strung will probably finish up around 11.

We'll be at Jammin Java, unless my wife is too tired to go out.

I'll be at the Black Cat, but for Film School not for the Cloud Room now now.

Tough call.  Let's compare the openers:

 Dr. Dog @ 9:30
Rogers Sisters, Film School @ black cat
Capitol Years, Brindley Brothers @ jammin java

I've heard and liked some tracks from the Capitol Years and Brindley Bros, but don't know a thing about the others.

Logistically, I don't know if I want to fight traffic getting out to jammin java from DC when I'm 10 minutes from the other shows.

DR. Dog is good. I seem to remember heaing Film School and thinking they were pretty good as well.

I agree, why go to VA when the party is here? Besides, JJ is a horrible venue for the High Strung.

Have you seen High Strung at Jammin Java? Definitely worked well the last time they were there.

wow, I still can't believe the backlash over CYHSY on this board. I actually like the album and the ticket price was cheap enough. I'll be there.

What is Dr. Dog like? The name makes me think I'm going to hate them.

i love dr. dog, but i think most people on here don't agree with me ... they have a classic rock kind of sound, put on a great unhinged live show, and "Easy Beat" (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE4781FDB4CA57520C0973150C6BA63D20ED342F38250234558C0B63E4B820E79FD0FBADED2B3FA75B235AEFD24A55C05D2CBFE3681&sql=10:vtom961o0ep5) was one of my favorite albums of last year

I'll be seeing Clap Your Hands because I am a trend-following hack.

I recall there were some conflicting opinions on Dr. Dog.  I will withhold judgment, as Pitchfork has not yet told me what to think of them.

Sorry for the multiple bulletins, but we're just about ready lose our minds.

To recap, our van was stolen this morning around 8am from the Comfort Inn on Delaware Ave in Philadelphia. It was a white, 2003 Ford E-350, California license plates. ALL of our gear was taken. Here's a list of what's missing:

 - 1966 Ludwig drum kit, blue sparkle
 - 23" Paiste ride cymbal
 - 1976 Fender P-bass, no finish, beat down, Bartolini pick-up
 - 1993 Gibson SG, black
 - 1973 Fender Telecaster Deluxe, cream, with marble pickguard, humbuckers
 - Fender Twin Reverb amp, 70's silverface, master volume
 - Fender Deville guitar amp
 - early 70's Ampeg SVT bass head with 2 massive metal handles on the sides
 - Ampeg SVT 410HLF bass cabinet
 - Peavey keyboard amp
 - 3 boxes of effects: 2 Line 6 delay pedals, Memory Man Deluxe, Big Muff, SansAmp Bass DI, Rat, MXR distortion, Cry Baby wah, 2 Boss EQ pedals, Boss Digital Delay, 2 Boss Tuners. These were in 3 different suitcases.
 - Kurzweil K2000 keyboard
 - Boss Dr. Sample

If anyone in the Philadelphia area has any info where this stuff might surface we'd really appreciate it. Or, if you find our van or our gear we can pay you handsome reward. Seriously.

As for the rest of the tour, here's what's happening:

 Wed-DC - cancelled
 Thur-Providence - cancelled
 Friday-Wellesely College - cancelled
 Sat-Mercury Lounge - still on
 Sun-Mercury Lounge - still on
 Monday- Memphis - ???
all SXSW shows are still on.

If anything changes or the equipment fairy makes a special delivery I'll post a bulletin here to let everyone know. Thanks to everyone who wrote to us. It really means a lot. Thanks again.

Seriously.  Is there some new gear thievery ring in action or are we just hearing more about the thefts when they happen?

Yeah....esp in a city like Philidelphia.  The area they're talking about is right on the river just across from Camden....another bad place to leave your gear.

CYHSY were not as bad as I was expecting after hearing all of the negativity about their October show.  The new material sounded great and while the set started to unravel at the end, they sounded great most of the time.

The mix was way off for Dr. Dog who had glimmers of promise.  I'll have to give them a listen someother time.

However, if I heard one more person clap their hands and yell "yeah" around me, I think I would have punched them.  It wasn't funny the first time, and doing it for the entirety of the the time between Dr. Dog and CYHSY didn't make it any funnier.

Clap your hands... might very well be the worst live band I have ever seen, really disappointing. Great band recording albums but this people shouldn't be allowed to play live. I thought they were awful, the sound was terrible. Would still buy their next album, but wouldn't see them live.

At one point I am pretty sure there were 8 people on stage. This was pretty impressive considering the High Strung is a three piece and at that point Josh, the singer and lead guitaist, was not actually on the stage.

I almost made my vocal debut, but alas, I cannot sing.

Ditto. Plus, they barely played an hour. They need to at least write more songs before I see them again.

What was the crowd like at the Black Cat?  I had planned on going until Film School cancelled, then I decided not to waste 45 minutes looking for a parking spot.

Full, half-full? Just curious what type of a following the Cloud Room has in these parts...if any...

Less than half full. Maybe 80 or so at best. A polite crowd (not a lot of chatting but not a lot of gyrating either.) Rogers Sisters were good but got a little monotonous towards the end. Cloud Room sounded nice, and on stage the songs had more bite than the album. Their lead singer was a bit overwrought at the beginning but the 2nd half of the set was better than the first half. With only two bands, the night was over just a bit after 11.

I'm with you guys...I think it's a prime example of a band getting "too big for their britches"...shoulda had a couple more black cat shows and another album under their belt before tackling the 9:30. The 9:30 can't be beat in terms of sound, atmosphere, etc., for a band that's tight, but sloppiness is all the more evident at the 9:30. The Black Cat's crappy acoustics at least hides some of the blemishes.

Why?  The band was able to sell out 9:30 in extremely short order -- they're not going to do several tours of smaller places just to develop their chops.  Bands play the venues they can sell out or get close.  Alas, the quality of the band is not often tied to that metric.  When seeing a young band, there's a risk factor involved.

exactly ... i remember not too long ago when the killers were the 1st openers on a 3 band bill at black cat, then within a year they were headlining arena-size shows ... doesn't mean they got any better (they hadn't, they still could only play like 45-50 mins and they can't play live), if they had to play to their talent, they'd be headlining at the velvet lounge ... but they could fill the big places, so more power to them

such is the predicament for a band like them. Sure they could sell out 930, but I don't think they were ready for a place like that.

I recall Arcade Fire being in a similar position and yet I thought their show rocked and was way better than CYHSY.
Title: Re: Wednesday Roll Call
Post by: Tom Servo on March 09, 2006, 03:21:00 pm
With all the no-shows, I guess I don't feel bad for only hitting one venue last night.  I could've swung by BC to catch the Cloud Room set after CYHSY but needed to be at work early this morning.  The nerve of my employers.

With my expectations clearly in check for CYHSY, having seen their BC show, I thought they did ok.  They started better than last time but didn't finish as strongly, and it really came apart at the end.  I think the lead guy (Alex Ounsworth?) is much more talented than the rest of the group and even he is not a natural performer.  They have their moments, but the band as a whole just doesn't consistently deliver live.

It's too bad because I think they write good songs and have good musicianship.  Like someone said above, I'll eagerly buy the next album but I don't think I need to see them live again.

And I see I was mistaken, I wouldn't have been able to catch Cloud Room.  Glad I didn't try...
