The Shins Get Stoned

Indie darlings bring late-night psychedelia to next album

Despite the boost the Shins received from being featured in last year's indie buzz film, Garden State, the Portland, Oregon-based rockers are insisting on creating their third album, the follow-up to 2003's Chutes Too Narrow, at their own pace. "I told SubPop, 'We go on tour so consistently that when we get home we're not rarin' to jump into the studio, OK?'" recalls singer-songwriter James Mercer.

That's not to say the band hasn't been getting it done. The Shins -- Mercer, drummer Jesse Sandoval, keyboardist Marty Crandall and bassist Dave Hernandez -- laid down drum tracks with producer Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, Built to Spill) this September in Seattle, and are finishing their album in Mercer's home studio. They hope to release the album -- either under the title Wincing the Night Away or Sleeping Lessons, both references to Mercer's crippling insomnia -- next summer.

"I've been mixing mikes to get really weird sounds," says Mercer, who has yet to write most of the album's lyrics. "That's probably the last thing I do." But Mercer will allow that the songs on the "twenty-five-percent complete" album chronicle "human-condition stuff." "One song is about the Fifties, when all of these modern conveniences were being invented -- like microwave ovens," he explains. "People predicted that we wouldn't work as much, but we work just as much, just more efficiently. Human life is about enjoying it, and this American worth ethic prevents people from really experiencing life."

Sonically, Mercer is exploring new territory, with more synth, piano and finger-picked guitar than on previous records. And where their creative process is concerned, the band wants to return to the laidback feel of recording their debut. "Oh, Inverted World, was a lot of sitting around with headphones on, smoking pot at five in the morning," Crandall confesses. "Sometimes it's crap, and other times it's great." Mercer adds, "Instead of mixing in a hurry, we want to get back to the ability to treat each sound with special effects and have it be a more atmospheric-sounding record. We really think of ourselves as a psychedelic band. That's the shit we listen to."

Or, as Hernandez puts it, "Our roots are getting high and listening to Pink Floyd."

It's pretty decent, but nothing earth shattering. As a country chanteuse, she's no Patsy Cline. Or even Neko Case for that matter.

Mike Ness says another solo album likely, perhaps less of a country direction and perhaps "more in a Bob Dylan direction.  Who knows.  As long as it's better than the last one."  Everybody was afraid to ask him to clarify.

And surprisingly, Ness said that "Sex Love and Rock and Roll" is not the last Social D album.  There were songs that weren't finished for the last album and they wrote while on tour over the last year.  Don't hold your breath for the next one though - what's the average between SxDx albums, 5-6 years?

Joey Burns Talks New Calexico Album

Jonah Flicker and Amy Phillips report:
Ennio Morricone's fantasy house band, Calexico, have some surprises in store for their fans when the follow-up to 2003's Feast of Wire comes out this spring. Due April 11 on Quarterstick, their longtime label, Garden Ruin seeks to cement Calexico's reputation as more than just "that indie rock band with Mariachi horns".

"I guess it kind of sounds different from previous records," frontman Joey Burns told Pitchfork earlier this week. "The Southwestern element is downplayed more on this release. It's focusing more on the songs themselves. There's no instrumentals on this record."

Burns said that Calexico's desire to branch out was inspired by working with Iron & Wine and Neko Case (the band appears on her forthcoming album, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood), as well as touring with Wilco. "It's helped us reconnect to the music scene in the States more, and I can see where in the past our music and our style has maybe been hard for people to identity with here, especially outside of the Western states. So having gotten to tour with Wilco and Iron & Wine, and playing festivals like Bonnaroo, has helped us play to bigger audiences and [ask], ??What is about us that makes us different?' and 'What else do we have to offer that hasn't been highlighted before?'" "Listening to bands like Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens, digging into this tradition of singer/songwriters from the States, has had a big influence," Burns said. "I wanted to put down the nylon string guitar and pick up the steel string guitar, which may sound like a small factor, but for me, what you gravitate towards as far as what you're going to write songs on really does have an influence as far as where the songs are going to go."

The lyrics on Garden Ruin have more of a liberal political bent than the usual Calexico fare. "Touring a lot in Europe has presented a lot of questions to the band," Burns explained. "How do you feel about your government? Your country's choice for president? What's going on outside the international boundary lines? Living close to the border of Mexico, being born in Montreal, Canada-- these things kind of make you think outside of the TV box and what's being said and what's being focused on. So I think all things have an influence at some point on your life and eventually it kind of settles into your writing and your experiences as you get older, travel about, do music."

 Garden Ruin tracklist:

 01 Cruel
 02 Yours and Mine
 03 Bisbee Blue
 04 Panic Open String
05 Letter to Bowie Knife Version 2
 06 Roka
 07 Lucky Dime Version 1
 08 Smash
 09 Deep Down Version 1
 10 Nom de Plume
 11 All Systems Red

In addition to the new album and their work on the new Neko Case record, Calexico have other collaborations planned, including work with Gotan Project and singer/songwriter Marianne Dissard (who appeared on Calexico's 2000 album Hot Rail.

Release date:  April 18th

Rock trio Secret Machines has finalized the track list for its second Reprise album, "Ten Silver Drops." In the same vein as its nine-song 2004 predecessor, "Now Hear Is Nowhere," the new set spreads eight songs over 45 minutes, including the eight-minute psychedelic epic "Daddy's in the Doldrums."

The Band's Garth Hudson contributes an accordion solo on "I Want To Know," while piano and layered vocals power the album-closing power ballad "1,000 Seconds."

It doesn't blow. But it also does not strike me as one of their best songs. It's a Patterson Hood song - and I think my biggest complaint would be that he sounds 'uninspired.'

Unless my ears are deceiving me - it sounds like they are adding a variety of instrumentation - a barrage of horns @ the end.

They are definitely all grown up now.

I'll never forget my DBT indoctrination: It was my first @ SXSW. And it was my first gig of the first evening. It was one those rare unexpected musical events where you literally stand in awe of what you lucked upon. It was basically a live rendering of Alabama Ass Whuppin'. They were selling homemade copies of this project they were working on: Southern Rock Opera. It took me weeks to figure out what I had witnessed. I really miss that version of the band.

I note the Janurary 10th Kill Rock Stars release of The Gossip's new album: Standing in the Way of Control (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=95157696&s=143441). More dance-y, less garage-y than their previous stuff. Not sure I like it as much as 2003's Movement (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008XS3A), but it's growing on me.

 The Flies

This is Sean Cook's (Spiritualized & Lupine Howl) new band.

It hasn't been released yet but will be soon. Somehow they found me and offered to send me a copy and I'm loving most of it. Of course, I'm a very big Lupine Howl fan. It's kind of laid back and settled like their latest work but there's something more exciting about it that sounds more like LH's earlier works. Maybe more of a blend between the various LH releases but with a new band. Kind of Bluesy at times like their earlier sounds but not as wild sounding. Nice production too.

This one is for you LazerGuidedMelodies, wherever you are.      ;)

Buzzcocks

The latest in a fresh line of full-lengths since the band reunited over a decade and a half ago, Flat-Pack Philosophy hits U.S. stores on March 7 (a day earlier in the UK). The Buzzcocks' eighth studio LP will be released by Cooking Vinyl, and is the follow-up to their acclaimed 2003 self-titled album on U.S. indie touchstone Merge Records.

Pitchfork recently caught up with founding Buzzcock Steve Diggle, who spoke at length about what longtime fans can expect with the band's upcoming release.

"There's a lot of vibe and energy in this new album," Diggle said. "That's what people seem to be saying to me. There's a lot of classic hallmarks of the Buzzcocks style taken through to the modern age. We're rocking better than ever at the moment."

Flat-Pack's first single, "Wish I Never Loved You" will be issued February 20, backed by the b-sides "Don't Matter What You Say" and "Orion". The title track is currently streaming on the band's MySpace page (in case you're in need of musical salvation on your next dateless Saturday night). The album's full tracklist is as follows, punks.

 Buzz cuts:

 01 Flat-Pack Philosophy
02 Wish I Never Loved You
 03 Sell You Everything
 04 Reconciliation
 05 I Don't Exist
 06 Soul Survivor
07 God, What Have I Done
 08 Credit
 09 Big Brother Wheels
 10 Dreamin'
 11 Sound of a Gun
 12 Look at You Now
 13 I've Had Enough
 14 Between Heaven and Hell

The Arctic Monkeys' album could become the fastest-selling debut album in recorded chart history, after selling more than 100,000 on its first day.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not sold 118,501 copies, outselling the rest of the top 20 albums combined.

It is expected to sell over 350,000 copies by the end of the week, breaking Hear'Say's five-year-old record.

"We knew day one sales were going to be big, but nobody expected them to be this huge," said HMV's Phil Penman.

The retail chain's head of music added: "It's as if they had won the X Factor, but achieving the same kind of sales without the benefit of a massive TV audience."

The Sheffield band built up a substantial fan base via the internet, before they were signed to Domino Records in June 2005.

Their debut single I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor topped the charts last October.

Follow-up When The Sun Goes Down gave the band a second number one last Sunday, and current sales figures put them in line to simultaneously top the album and singles charts this weekend.

The album has already sold more in one day than the debut efforts from Kaiser Chiefs, Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand sold in their first week.

 NME nominations

"They're well on their way to having the first million-selling album of 2006," said Mr Penman.

"If it continues to sell at this rate, there's even a danger shops could sell out by the end of the week."

Hear'Say's Popstars holds the current record for a debut album, selling 306,631 copies in its first week in 2001.

Earlier on Tuesday, the band picked up four nominations at next month's NME Awards, including best British band, new band, live band and best track.

I have neither of these, but I think each are coming through town in the next month or two -- New CD reviews from the NY Times:

 The Gossip
Standing in the Way of Control
 (Kill Rock Stars)

On a pair of short, raucous albums, "That's Not What I Heard" and "Movement," this Arkansas-raised garage-punk trio made a furious and sometimes thrilling racket. The guitarist, known as Brace, unleashed a series of scraping, strutting pint-sized riffs, while the singer, Beth Ditto, howled and moaned, evoking everything from 1990's hard core to 1960's girl groups.

On "Standing in the Way of Control," the band's third album, the music simmers as much as it boils, especially on the title track, a slow-building four-minute song with a pared-down disco beat. (By this band's standards, four minutes is epic.) And "Eyes Open" is two minutes of shivery fear and longing; it could be a postpunk sequel to "I Walk the Line," by another singer from the band's home state. This is a transitional album: many of the songs seem underwritten without all that noise on top; sometimes it sounds as if the band is still trying to figure out what to do with its tense, restrained new sound. In fact, one of the best songs is one of the punkiest: an angular, three-minute feminist anthem called "Fire With Fire." KELEFA SANNEH

 Test Icicles
 For Screening Purposes Only
 (Domino)

Britain is full of bands that turn their influences into a sound that's stylish and coherent; this is a British band (although two of the three members were born in America) that would rather make a mess. This debut album is full of giddy, omnivorous dance-punk songs: you can hear the expected new-wave precursors, but also more unexpected ones, like the Armenian-American freak-metal band System of a Down.

This is music that tries to be over-the-top and uncool: too hard, sometimes. But more often the songs are too contagious and exuberant to dislike, even the ones with self-mocking (but not quite inaccurate) titles like "Party on Dudes (Get Hype)." The band had a British hit with "Boa vs. Python," a furious little blast of hard-rock new wave. And "All You Need Is Blood" cheerfully shows off the group's short attention span: there's no way to predict the grime-inspired electronic beat that arrives, uninvited but not unwelcome, at the end of the song. KELEFA SANNEH

John Cale Produces New Alejandro Escovedo Album
 Zach Vowell reports:
Good news: On May 2, Backporch Records will release The Boxing Mirror,
Alejandro Escovedo's first new solo album since 2000. Even better news
(in case you haven't heard yet): Escovedo has for the most part overcome
the Hepatitis C that left him collapsed on a Phoenix stage in 2003.
Thanks to the generosity of family, friends, and fellow musicians,
Escovedo has been able to fund his treatment and recovery despite his
lack of health insurance. (The 2004 Escovedo tribute album Por Vida,
featuring Lucinda Williams, Calexico, the Jayhawks, Son Volt, Steve
Earle, and many others, sure helped.)
Now that he's back in the game, Escovedo has enlisted one of his more
famous friends, John Cale, to produce The Boxing Mirror, which the pair
recorded with Escovedo's touring band in Los Angeles late last year. The
album will feature 11 new Escovedo songs, but has 12 tracks in all. If
you just go by the story the tracklist tells, it looks like Escovedo had
to settle a disagreement between John Cale and Larry Goetz (who,
incidentally, worked on Cale's 2005 effort Black Acetate) by including
both of the soundman's mixes of "Take Your Place".
 Tracks:
 01 Arizona
 02 Dearhead on the Wall
 03 Notes on Air
 04 One True Love
 05 The Ladder
 06 Break This Time
 07 Evita's Lullaby
 08 Sacramento & Polk
 09 I Died a Little Today
10 Take Your Place (John Cale mix)
 11 The Boxing Mirror
12 Take Your Place (Larry Goetz mix)

I love this idea:

Although no specific plans have been settled on, Casale says it "would be funny as hell" for Devo 2.0 to make an unannounced appearance at a regular Devo show at some point. "I think the greatest thing would be if they came out and did the exact same set we're about to do," he says with a laugh. "And then we come out and do it. I like that idea. By the time the audience sees us old guys, it's like, 'No! Bring back the kids!'"

How about these guys?

Here are the names of bands that flitted through the mind of a music critic while listening to the Capes' debut album, Hello: the Buzzcocks, Wire, Oasis, the Beatles, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, Squeeze, the Beatles (again), the Jam, the Kinks (again), the Beach Boys (again). That is august company, of course, and it is also indicative of the Capes' music, which is catchy, guitar-based pop/rock that edges toward punk/new wave rock, but also boasts enough keyboard blips to show greater musical sophistication, along with occasional harmonies to sweeten things and often clever lyrics declaimed in clear British accents. In the mid-'60s, many of these tracks could have been hit singles; in the late '70s, they could have set clubs pogo-ing. In the 2000s, they can admittedly sound somewhat retro at times, but the Capes manage to reinvent their influences for their own purposes and play with enough conviction to make this infectious music their own. And they throw enough odd ingredients into the mix (the Japanese "chat" in "Shinjuku Hi-5," the eerie synth riffs in "Francophile [Ver 1.5]") to give the songs individual character. The Capes are not just pale imitators of previous generations of British rock bands, even if they bring many of those bands to mind. They accomplish the feat of taking an utterly familiar style and coming up with something new.

It's a little more than the new album.  They just charted with the highest debut ever in the history of the British charts.  360,000 sold in one week.  That's huge over there, sort of like a million seller over here.  What makes them different?  A number of things:

 1.  the way they get so much attention about 8-12 mos ago.  Internet releases.  No label, no big-time manager, they did it all themselves.

 2.  they are VERY young but the lyrics are much better than your run-o-the-mill Brit band.  Kids really got into the lyrics.

 3.  Their 1st show in London had to be moved to a bigger venue 3 times.  Created a HUGE buzz.  And they lived up to the expectation.  Not just another retro band.

 4.  In the few interviews they've done, they've come across as humble and kind of awshucks.  Not what the Brits are used (Gallagher Bros. sayng they'll be bigger than the Beatles.)

Anyway, not saying they are the best thing ever.  But they are not just like all the over-hyped bands.  They did it differently wihtout knowing any better.

No U.S. release date scheduled as of yet . . .

 NEW ALBUM: 'MEDS'

On 13 March Virgin Records will release Placebo??s new album, ??Meds??. The track listing is as follows:

 1. Meds
 2. Infra-red
 3. Drag
 4. Space Monkey
 5. Follow The Cops Back Home
 6. Post Blue
 7. Because I Want You
 8. Blind
 9. Pierrot The Clown
 10. Broken Promise
 11. One Of A Kind
 12. In The Cold Light Of Morning
 13. Song To Say Goodbye

??Meds?? will be Placebo??s first studio album since 2004??s ??Sleeping With Ghosts??, which went Top 10 in the UK and sold 1.4 million copies worldwide. In that time Placebo have gone from strength to strength selling out 10,000 capacity arena dates all over south and central America (Q Magazine witnessed this spectacle in Mexico, awarding it a 4-out-5 rating and describing it as ??a dancefloor rammed with screaming teenagers, wobbling under the weight of 15,000 pogoing bodies.?), and playing to a sold out Wembley Arena to celebrate the release of their Singles Collection, Once More With Feeling, where they were joined on-stage by Robert Smith for a version of The Cure??s ??Boys Don??t Cry?? and their very own, ??Without You I??m Nothing??.

Recorded over an eight week period at London??s RAK Studios, ??Meds?? marks the return of a very confident band who after 10 years together keep growing in stature. The first single from the album, ??Because I Want You??, is an urgent, impassioned plea to not give up on love; three-and-a-half minutes of joyous pop, reminiscent of the band??s early work and a strong indication of what to expect from the rest of the album. For this album the band returned to their roots, stripped away the layers and got to the heart of being a live, confident rock band. This they??ve achieved with the help of producer Dimitri Tikovoi, who insisted they had to make their first record again and try everything. As Brian put it: ??We allowed space for the songwriting to shine through rather than show up how clever we were and how good we??ve gotten at using the studio. We were going for simplicity rather than elaboration.?

The result is not just a molten, souped-up raw roar of a record, but also Placebo??s most human collection to date. Here are tales of fragile souls freaking out because they??ve forgotten to take their medication (??Meds??, which features VV of The Kills), of the blear-eyed shame of the bathroom mirror in a narcotic comedown dawn (??Cold Light Of Morning??), of ??your friends who are making extremely bad lifestyle choices? (??Song To Say Goodbye??), a beautiful, thoughtful ballad (??Follow The Cops Back Home??), and mysterious, haunting songs (??Space Monkey??). Here are stories - subtly unfolded - of loss, confusion, revenge, love, addiction and dependence.

The band will launch their world tour in S.E. Asia next month, at the Bangkok 100 Rock Festival, and arrive in the UK in April. They play Rock Am Ring/ Rock Im Park in Germany, 2nd and 4th June, co-headline the Friday night at the Isle of Wight Festival with The Prodigy on 9th June and then headline Nova Rock Festival in Austria on June 16th and Interlaken Festival, Switzerland, on June 17th. UK tour dates to be announced soon.

??Meds?? will be preceded by the single ??Because I Want You?? on 6 March.

Placebo are one of the UK??s most successful bands of the last 10 years, having sold one million albums in the UK and 6 million worldwide.

Mudhoney Expose Themselves To A Billion Suns
 Tuesday January 31, 2006 @ 06:30 PM
 By: ChartAttack.com Staff

 Mudhoney

It's one thing for a Seattle-based band to have survived the fall of the grunge scene relatively unscathed, but it's quite another for that same band to still be making well-respected garage-punk and psychedelic rock after 18 years. Mudhoney's sound hasn't changed to follow trends, and they continue their formula on their 10th album, Under A Billion Suns.

The record, which will be released on March 7 by Sub Pop, was produced by Phil Ek, Johnny Sangster and Tucker Martine. While the music made by singer Mark Arm, guitarist Steve Turner, drummer Dan Petersand Australian bassist Guy Maddison is as loud as ever, Under A Billion Suns is said to be more political in its lyrics than previous works.

Mudhoney, comprised of former members of Green River and The Melvins, were one of Sub Pop's earliest bands and helped put the fledgling Seattle label on the map. Sub Pop released their self-titled album in 1989 and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge in 1991 before the group moved up to the majors to record four LPs for Reprise. The band returned to Sub Pop for their last album, 2002's Since We've Become Translucent.

Here are the songs you'll find Under A Billion Suns:

 "Where Is The Future?"
 "It Is Us"
 "I Saw The Light"
 "Endless Yesterday"
 "Empty Shells"
 "Hard On For War"
 "A Brief Celebration Of Indifference"
 "Let's Drop In"
 "On The Move"
 "In Search Of"
 "Blindspots"

There's a Manilow renaissance?  Oy, look what Rod Stewart started.  Though I never knew Manilow went away!  Even I admit he's no real singer, I just was young enough to fall prey to the stuff he wrote back in the day.

 New CD's
 By THE NEW YORK TIMES
 Barry Manilow
"The Greatest Songs of the Fifties"
 (Arista)

The inexplicable Barry Manilow renaissance continues on "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties," which hit the pop chart at No. 1 last week. In Mr. Manilow's 1970's heyday, no one imagined that his modest voice would give him a second career as an interpreter. But he hasn't been writing songs lately.

Like other aging pop stars, he has already made albums of Tin Pan Alley standards, with chutzpah enough to redo an album of Frank Sinatra favorites. Now he's on to the 1950's, which, some people may remember, gave birth to rock 'n' roll. Not in the Manilow universe: this is an album of ballads, all of which reached No. 1 in much better versions. Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, Dinah Washington, Tommy Edwards and Frankie Avalon have no worries.

The new versions orchestrate the songs as pure old-fashioned easy listening. There's no yearning, no mischief, no lust ?? just an unctuous diligence; the only dramatic tension is whether Mr. Manilow will go flat before the next note. Strings are slathered on thickly, horns are muted and any drums are a distant rustle. A listener could almost escape into the sticky-sweet perfection of the arrangements, but then along comes Mr. Manilow, right up front and earnestly trying to emote, which for him means laying on the vibrato.

He doesn't bring on guests who might outsing him except for a version of "Sincerely" with Phyllis McGuire, who sang it in 1955 with the McGuire Sisters. They were one of the white groups that covered 1950's R&B hits in blander, better-selling versions, yet Ms. McGuire still sounds friskier than he does. He is presenting the illusory 1950's of conservative mythology: placid, cozy, chaste and oblivious. Even if rock 'n' roll hadn't arrived, those years couldn't have been this dull. JON PARELES

I've had The Subways album for a while. It has grown on me and I'm going to see them when they come. They aren't my favorite British band right now but they are still raw and interesting. I think it would add a lot if they had another band member. As for The Elected, I listed to a couple of songs on iTunes last night and liked them a lot. I'm probably going to buy the album. It struck me as full, rich and melancholic.

I pirated it a while back. The first songs are great, as they get slower, they get worse. Not their best effort.

Actually, no. My favorite song off the album is "Rise Up With Fists," which I think is probably one of the purer country songs. I just wasn't blown away by some of the less full (sound-wise) songs, like the title track. I haven't really listened to it much since buying it, so it will probably grow on me, but for now it's not my favorite. I'm still seeing her live next month.

I've had it about a week now.  It's good.  It doesn't have quite the range that 'Cedars' does, but it does well staying in that comfortable middle area.  If you thought 'Cedars' was an A album, you'll probably find 'Amber' earns a B+.

Dylan, Springsteen Prep New CDs
Both legends are hitting the studio, launching tours

Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are both planning new albums for 2006 -- and each will likely launch a tour as well. Dylan has just begun work on his thirty-first studio disc, and Springsteen is wrapping up his first-ever CD of cover songs, focusing on music from the repertoire of folk icon Pete Seeger.

On January 31st, Dylan arrived at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie, New York, with his current touring band. For the next four days, according to Bardavon's executive director, Chris Silva, the band rehearsed new material. "It was experimental, all kinds of different licks," Silva told the Poughkeepsie Journal. "They would get into one thing, and they would go over it and over it. Then they would change gears."

Dylan -- who kicks off a tour on April 1st in Reno, Nevada, that will include a performance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival later that month -- then moved the operation to Manhattan to lay down his new tunes. His previous studio album, 2001's acclaimed Love and Theft, was also cut in New York, in just two and a half weeks at Sony Music Studios, with Dylan producing under the name Jack Frost.

Meanwhile, sources familiar with the Springsteen project say that he has nearly completed his covers album, which has the working title The Seeger Sessions and will include both Seeger-penned tunes and American standards the folk patriarch helped popularize. Seeger, 86, is the author of folk classics such as "If I Had a Hammer" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"

One source says that this project began in 1998, when Springsteen recorded the protest anthem "We Shall Overcome" for the Seeger tribute album Where Have All the Flowers Gone? There have been two recording sessions since, and Springsteen is likely to hit the studio once more.

On the new disc, Springsteen is backed by a small group featuring his wife, Patti Scialfa, E Street Band violinist Soozie Tyrell and other New Jersey musicians playing largely traditional folk instruments like mandolin and banjo. "The Tom Joad tour [from 1995 to 1997] helped me realize I like to play a lot of different ways," Springsteen told Rolling Stone last year. "I love playing with the E Street Band, I love playing by myself, and at some point I'll probably stumble onto something that might work for a small band." The album is due out in May, and Springsteen is planning to tour this spring, backed by the musicians who recorded the disc.

MATTHEW SWEET AND SUSANNA HOFFS GET GROOVY ON NEW DUETS ALBUM FROM SHOUT! FACTORY

 Under the Covers Vol. 1

New ??60s Pop Primer CD Features 15 Hand-Picked Favorites From The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Zombies, The Who, Neil Young, And More ?? In Stores April 18th

LOS ANGELES, CA ?? Two of pop music??s darlings ?? Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles - have joined voices in celebration of one of the most important eras in pop music. Featuring 15 of the duo??s favorite pop tunes from the 1960s, Under The Covers Vol. 1 combines popular hits and obscure gems from such important names in music as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, The Who, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, The Zombies, The Mama??s And The Papas, The Left Banke, The Bee Gees, The Marmalade, Fairport Convention, Love, The Stone Poneys, and The Velvet Underground. Sweet and Hoffs, each with a stunning and highly distinguishable voice of their own, mingle melodies and tones for new, unique harmonies that truly reflect the sounds of the time. Shout! Factory will release Under The Covers Vol. 1 on April 18th

Matthew ??Sid? Sweet and Susanna ??Susie? Hoffs have always been fans of each other??s work, performing guest vocals at each others concerts a few times throughout the years, and collaborating with comedian Mike Myers as members of Austin Powers?? on-screen band Ming Tea in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and Austin Powers in Goldmember. Now Sweet and Hoffs explore a classic era of pop music together for the first time, on Under The Covers. The down to earth feel of the record reflects the ease of the sessions; recorded entirely at Sweet??s home facility, Lolina Green, the work was a true labor of love, done, as they both put it, ??purely for the fun of it!? The newly formed duo wanted to start with a few of their favorite, though lesser known tracks: ??She May Call You Up Tonight? by ??60s baroque rock band The Left Banke, ??The Warmth Of The Sun? by The Beach Boys, and the melancholy ballad ??Who Knows Where The Time Goes?? by British folk-rock group Fairport Convention, among others. They also threw in a few more well-known songs from the era; Neil Young??s ??Cinnamon Girl,? Pete Townsend??s ??The Kids Are Alright,? and John Phillips?? ??Monday, Monday? were on the short list. Sweet and Hoffs, both Lou Reed fans, also added ??Sunday Morning? from The Velvet Underground & Nico. Of course no ??60 music collection would be complete without a selection from The Beatles, so the Sweet/Hoffs consensus was ??And Your Bird Can Sing? from Revolver. And, one exception to the rule requires mentioning; the Bee Gee??s ??Run To Me,? actually came out in 1971.

A ??60s pop primer of sorts, Under The Covers Vol. 1??s 15 songs span a wide range of genres ?? from rock to folk to pop ?? but all have that unmistakable ??60s vibe. It??s obvious that Sweet and Hoffs have put their own stamp on these covers, individually and collectively, but have done so with a sense of respect and admiration for the original versions and composers. On Under The Covers Vol. 1 Sweet and Hoffs pay homage to arguably the most important decade in pop music by inserting their own musical personalities and unique harmonies for a fresh and new sound. Dig it.

As announced on their website, Scotland's Camera Obscura have a new album coming this summer. It's called Let's Get Out Of This Country and contains echoes of The Ronettes, the breezy 60's AM pop sounds of The Association and even Lloyd Cole in the mix. In fact, here's a new song, clearly inspired by Mr. Heartbreaker himself. I guarantee that you will be chained to this album when it comes out.

Two more Dinosaur Jr. albums get reissued PLUS a live set from 93. Cool!

Quote
Billboard.com

 February 28, 2006, 10:35 AM ET

 Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Rhino has set a May 16 release date for expanded reissues of Dinosaur Jr.'s first two major-label albums, 1991's "Green Mind" and 1993's "Where You Been," Billboard.com has learned. The same day, the label will also issue "Live at CBGB: The First Acoustic Show," chronicling a 1993 performance by vocalist/guitarist J Mascis at the legendary New York venue.

Having reached a new level of success with the 1988 album "Bug" and its single "Freak Scene," "Green Mind" ushered Dinosaur Jr. up from the indie rock ranks. The single "The Wagon" became the group's first entry on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, peaking at No. 22.

This new edition is expanded with the B-sides "Turnip Farm" and "Forget It," plus a cover of the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Hot Burrito #2" with backing vocals by actor Matt Dillon

Dinosaur Jr.'s next album, "Where You Been," is its best-seller, having shifted more than 256,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set spawned the enduring Modern Rock Hit "Start Choppin" (No. 4). It is expanded here with an unreleased live take on "Hide" recorded by late BBC Radio icon John Peel, an alternate version of "Keeblin'" and a 10-minute live rendition of "What Else Is New."

As for the acoustic album, 10 of its 12 tracks have never been released. Mascis runs through familiar cuts like "Thumb," "Flying Cloud" and "Get Me" while also digging into the band's back catalog for early favorites like "Repulsion" and "Quest." The set will be limited to 5,000 copies and sold only at select independent music retailers.

After reuniting in 2005, Dinosaur Jr.'s original lineup (Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, drummer Murph) will be back on the road this spring for a three-week tour that kicks off March 29 in Dallas.

This album release -- which is now April 9 -- was hyped EVERYWHERE in Austin.  Most bars had plastic 16 oz water cups listing the album and release date.

Saw them at Stubbs -- the sound was awful.  Not sure how the album will be...next time, NO shows at Stubbs.

New Ed Harcourt material this year

The Beautiful Lie is the title of my new record which should hopefully be coming out in the early stages of the summer. I originally made two albums last year intending for them both to be released simultaneously, but the idea was scrapped so we combined both records to make this one. There'll probably be another record with the left-over songs later in the year or in 2007.
Track-listing for 'The Beautiful Lie' is as follows:

 WHIRLWIND IN D MINOR
 VISIT FROM THE DEAD DOG
YOU ONLY CALL ME WHEN YOU'RE DRUNK
 THE LAST CIGARETTE
 SHADOWBOXING
 LATE NIGHT PARTNER
 REVOLUTION IN THE HEART
 UNTIL TOMORROW THEN
 SCATTERBRAINE
 RAIN ON THE PRETTY ONES
 THE PRISTINE CLAW
 I AM THE DRUG
 BRAILLE
GOOD FRIENDS ARE HARD TO FIND

Primal Scream Prepare New Album

 James Gregory reports:
Break out Bob Barker's leather jacket, because screamadelic Brits Primal Scream are getting ready to take another spin of the stylistic wheel. Their new album, Riot City Blues, due out June 5 on Columbia in the UK.

The disc will be the band's first set of new material since 2002's justly overlooked Evil Heat, and will see the once-vital quartet ditching the aggro-dance of their last two LPs for a return to the Stones-fueled rock of their third disc, Give Out But Don't Give Up. Singer Bobby Gillespie recently explained to NME, "I think we're one of the best live bands in the world and I wanted to capture that. The last two albums we've been loops and drum machines, for this record we wrote euphoric rock n roll songs and I wanted to capture that euphoria and I think we did it."

I'm imagining a pesky Famiy Circus-style ghost named Bac-ta-Basiks roaming around the studio. That poor Jeffy can't catch a break!

Riot City Blues features guest stints by Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Warren Ellis (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds), and Echo and the Bunnyman guitarist Will Sergeant. The record's first single, "Country Girl", will be released May 22.

 Come together:

 01 Country Girl
 02 Nitty Gritty
03 Suicide Sally & Johnny Guitar
 04 When the Bomb Drops
 05 Little Death
 06 The 99th Floor
 07 Boogie Disease
 08 Dolls
 09 Hell's Comin' Down
10 Sometimes I Feel So Lonely

Not quite an album yet, but the revamped De Novo Dahl have posted three new songs on their website. They continue to do what they do best which is well crafted pop, if these three new songs are any indication DND ver 2.0 will be fab....  Now if they could only keep a steady keyboard player in the group

Simon Ready To 'Surprise' With Eno
 March 28, 2006, 10:30 AM ET
 Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

After several years of work, Paul Simon is finally ready to share his long-awaited collaboration with producer Brian Eno (U2, Talking Heads) with the listening public. The 11-track project, dubbed "Surprise," will be released May 9 in North America via Warner Bros. and a day earlier internationally.

Among the songs set to appear on "Surprise" are "Sons and Daughters," "How Can You Live in the Northeast," "Outrageous" and "Father and Daughter," Simon's contribution to 2002's "The Wild Thornberrys Movie" which was nominated for the best original song Academy Award.

Guest appearances include guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Steve Gadd and pianist Herbie Hancock, whose 2005 album, "Possibilities," featured a new recording with Simon of the latter's "I Do It for Your Love."

"Surprise" is Simon's first studio album since 2000's "You're the One," which debuted at No. 19 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 505,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The lone live date on Simon's schedule at present is a May 7 appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. A small-venue show in London is in the works to coincide with the new album's release date but details have yet to be announced.

According to a spokesperson, tours are in the works for both summer and fall. Simon will also perform on the May 13 episode of NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

Here is the track list for "Surprise":

"How Can You Live in the Northeast"
"Everything About It Is a Love Song"
 "Outrageous"
 "Sure Don't Feel Like Love"
 "Wartime Prayers"
 "Beautiful"
 "I Don't Believe"
 "Another Galaxy"
"Once Upon a Time There Was an Ocean"
 "That's Me"
 "Father and Daughter"

It's good.

I've had it since last week.  I gave it one spin then and was a bit underwhelmed.  It stayed in the glove compartment until my commute today.

It's a slow grower.  Steady as She Goes is by far the catchiest track.  There is a lot of downtempo stuff; shades of 70's power rock; some balladry; a smidge of late-60's psychedelia.  Some of it sounds like outtakes from Get Behind Me Satan reworked for a full band.

I'll give it 7.9 Z's off the bat, but reserve the right to revise that score.

I really can't wait for Air Formation's new CD! Heard that it's a bit different and all in a good way but haven't heard anything as of yet. If it's anything like their last EP with the song For The Hours, then I know I'll be fully delighted. For The Hours was the Best Song of 2005 on The Trans-Atlantic Underground. It's such an incredible song.

Also, the Never Lose That Feeling: Volume Two release has been postphoned until maybe September so as not to conflict with other AC30 releases. This is going to be just as good if not better than Volume One. I've been given the Hammock MP3 of Black Metallic, which is on this new one and it is just as good, if not better, than Catherine Wheel's original version.

From: "The Dears" <information@thedears.org>

Sometime a little while ago, we completed our third full length album. We are really proud and are very much looking forward to everyone playing the crap out it. As clich? as this may sound, it's by far the 'best work we've ever done.' But seriously, it doesn't sound like anything else and it's pretty relentless. As (I think) we've mentioned before, it is somewhat of a stripped down, raw affair. There is french horn in 2 songs and and saxophone in another. Though there is some mellotron-ny stuff, there are no real violins, violas or cellos. I guess that means that we're no longer "orchestral". Send complaints to gfy@thedears.org. Anyway, we recorded it in the splendour of our Parc X Manor (MTL) over the winter, mixed it in Greenpoint (Brooklyn, NYC) in March, and the final cut of the master arrived last week from Masterdisk (Manhattan, NYC). We've sent it around to our record companies and they tell us that they like it. Phew. Now they are going to do whatever it is they do !
to get the album into your hands. We are just putting the final touches on the artwork and then that's it.

The album is called GANG OF LOSERS. Here are the song titles, in order:

 01. SINTHTRO
 02. TICKET TO IMMORTALITY
 03. DEATH OR LIFE WE WANT YOU
 04. HATE THEN LOVE
 05. THERE GOES MY OUTFIT
 06. BANDWAGONEERS
 07. FEAR MADE THE WORLD GO 'ROUND
 08. YOU AND I ARE A GANG OF LOSERS
 09. WHITES ONLY PARTY
 10. BALLAD OF HUMANKINDNESS
 11. I FELL DEEP
 12. FIND OUR WAY TO FREEDOM

The album's title comes from a running joke that Benvie started a couple of years ago while we were on tour. Then after thinking about the phrase a lot more, it got all serious and became a bit of metaphor for this whole...thing. Anyway, thanks Benvie. The album clocks in at 48 minutes and you can drop a laser on that s**t as of the end of August 2006. Expect a single by June-ish. Maybe even a video for it. I think.

For now, you can hear "Fear Made The World Go 'Round" at http://www.myspace.com/thedears (http://www.myspace.com/thedears) until Monday.

We've been trying out the new stuff in rehearsal and  though the first couple of times were pretty brutal, we are finally starting to sound like a band again. We've got a few new pieces of gear to go with the new songs. Nat and Val are sporting a pair of pretty wicked slick Roland X6 keybards. I'm using a Korean Epiphone Casino  for the most part (I've retired my '66 Jazzmaster) and I picked up a new analogue delay pedal from Moog. I also picked up a Roland AX7 'gui-board' or 'key-tar' which I play with our old SH-32 synth brain. Somehow, that thing is still with us; she's seen a thousand gigs and will likely see a thousand more. Astounding. French has a really loud Ampeg bass amp. I mean, it's loud. George ran out of drums to hit so he added a floor tom. As for Krief and his Stratocaster; from his cold dead hands...

We're doing a little warm-up gig at a small club around town tonight before we head down to Coachella this weekend. New songs + new gear x haven't played a gig in several months = could totally suck. At any rate it'll be interesting.

Here are some other shows coming up:

 April
30 - Coachella Valley Music Festival, Indio, California (part of the festival with Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Metric, Wolf Parade, Depeche Mode, Scissor Sisters, The Go! Team, Mogwai, Massive Attack, Bloc Party, Madonna, and many more)

 May
22 - Tulip Festival, Ottawa, Canada (with Malajube, and more)

 June
 10 - Sydney, Australia (TBC)
25 - Wireless, London, England (part of the festival with Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, Gang of Four, Thomas Dolby(!) and more)
29 - Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, Montr?al, Canada (at Metropolis)

 July
1 Canada Day, Harbourfront, Toronto, Canada

 August
19 - V Festival, Stafford, England (part of the festival with Radiohead, Beck, Bloc Party, Fatboy Slim, and more)
20 - V Festival, Chelmsford, England (part of the festival with Radiohead, Beck, Bloc Party, Fatboy Slim, and more)
22 - Dublin, Marlay Park (with Morrissey, The Dandy Warhols, The Magic Numbers)

We are also planning a tour of Canada for the month of September. We haven't toured here proper in like 2 years. Shameful.

I think that's it for now. Looking forward to seeing you all soon, somewhere.

Murray (on behalf of The Dears)

 Update
 May 1st, 2006

This past week was one of the most difficult ever for us as a band. We had to make an incredibly hard decision that has a direct effect on our future. Earlier this week our record label offered us a chance to record a cover song for a large corporation to be used in a commercial. In addition to using the song in the commercial they wanted us to put it on our record and potentially use it as a single. We turned down the offer(knowing the probable consequences), and our record label dropped us. Needless to say, this came at a bad time since we were a week away from recording our next record. At the moment we are weighing all of our options and still plan on recording next month. We will release another record, we just are not sure with what record label. We promise to keep you up to date with new information and as always check back here for new show dates and content.

  Orson (http://www.orsonband.com/orsonband.htm)

 from  CD Times (http://www.cdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=2286)

Like the Scissor Sisters before them, L.A. five-piece Orson are attempting to crack the UK before their home country, and with an album as good as Bright Idea, it??s no wonder there is a furious bidding war erupting between a host of UK major labels to sign them.

With a sharp, contemporary look, Orson grab the limelight even before their music ?? a heady mix of rock, pop and retro soul - is heard. So it??s a good thing that the punchy, quirky and undeniably commercial songs on Bright Idea more than live up to the hype.

Five of the eleven songs that make up 'My Secret is my Silence' were written with Roddy's Idlewild band mate and co-songwriter, guitarist ROD JONES, two with the album's producer (and BBC radio 2 folk musician of the year 2003) JOHN McCUSKER, two with childhood friend and singer in Glasgow's alternative folk band Foxface, MICHAEL ANGUS and one with acclaimed borders based folk singer KARINE POLWART. "These are songs that would have never lived with Idlewild, but are still very much a part of me. Being able to write with Rod, and John and Karine and Michael made me feel (for two weeks) like I was part of a new band, and this allowed me to feel free to describe myself in a way I've wanted to for a long time, in a context I was completely comfortable with, and I think it shows"

The album, recorded in South Yorkshire over nine days in March 2006, features a band made up of all the songwriters, as well as drummer DAVID GOW and bassist AILIDH LENNON (who is also Roddy's wife) from the Scottish band SONS AND DAUGHTERS. As well as appearances from some of folk music's most accomplished players, flautist MICHAEL McGOLDRICK, accordionist ANDY CUTTING and guitarist IAN CARR and popular folk singers KARINE POLWART, KATE RUSBY and DAVE BURLAND.

'My Secret is my Silence' is an album full of stories about language and communication, about nature and the people that surround us and make our environment. Inspired as much by the poetry of Robert Frost and George MacKay Brown as by the time Roddy has spent up in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, which has long been the source for many Idlewild songs and albums.

Yeah, the entire album was available to download on the atease message board this morning, but has now been removed.  As tempting as it is, I think I'm gonna wait til the actual cd comes out and listen to it in its entirety.

Has anyone heard either of the following?

 Zero 7, "The Garden"
 Cheap Trick, "Rockford"

A friend mentioned that the Cheap Trick album is getting raves as an album as good as their early classics.  I haven't read anything myself yet.

The allmusic review of the Cheap Trick album basically said it was their first good album since 1979. The losing streak has been broken.

Someone mentioned the newest Phoenix album.  Their use/misuse of English idioms amuses me.

New Guster soon. The  video (http://www.guster.com/splash060518/video.html) for "One Man Wrecking Machine" is excellent. It has puppet-y things.

Good thing they were on a major label for part of their career. You don't get a five star review in Rolling Stone unless you're on a major label.

Dylan Surveys 'Modern Times' On New Album

 June 13, 2006, 10:10 AM ET
 Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Bob Dylan will break a five-year hiatus from the studio later this summer with his 44th album. Due Aug. 29 via Columbia, the 10-track "Modern Times" was recorded earlier this year with Dylan's touring band.

It's the follow-up to 2001's "Love and Theft," the No. 5 debut of which was Dylan's best showing on The Billboard 200 since 1979's "Slow Train Coming." The set has sold more than 757,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"Modern Times" includes such tracks as "When The Deal Goes Down," "Spirit on the Water," "Thunder on the Mountain" and "Workingman's Blues," according to Columbia.

Dylan, who recently began hosting his own "Theme Time Radio Hour" on XM Satellite Radio, is not currently on the road, having wrapped a six-week North American tour last month in Hollywood, Fla.

In other Dylan news, Martin Scorsese's 2005 documentary "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan" won the grand prize and the arts documentary prize last night (June 12) at the 27th Banff Rockie Awards in Banff, Alberta.

Brent Best's new band (ex-SLOBBERBONE).
The new band is basically SBone minus the tall bass player & with the addition of 2 new members. This could be good...VERY GOOD:

 Hey All,

The album is done and, if I do say so myself, oh-so worth the wait. Jubilee Dive will be available on July 25th. But for those of you who need a little something to get you through the next month, here's a chance to practice your eye-hand coordination and get a download.

  http://newwestrecords.com/thedrams/ (http://newwestrecords.com/thedrams/)

Also, the tour dates are starting to solidify. The band will be hitting most of the country in the next six months, so everyone should get themselves a chance for a little Drams Live. And there are plans to send them across the ocean for a visit too. Check the website for frequent updates: www.thedrams.com. (http://www.thedrams.com.)

 Talk to you soon.

Can't really pinpoint it. I thought it sounded bland, generic, and uninspired. I remember thinking the music and his voice didn't really gel for me. I always preferred the more countrified stuff SB did, didn't care for the more classic rock-ish final album at all.

I didn't realize it was a requirement to love every album released in order to be a music fan. In my mind, if you're really a music fan, you're going to hate 95% of what is released.

That's cool - I know you really liked SBone - so your opinion carries some extra weight here.

I think you should revisit Slippage. I agree that it's not their best. But there is also some excellent stuff. The second half is actually quite countrified. I think my biggest problem with Slippage is the production. Very slick. the record would benefit by sounding (production-wise) like Barrel Chested.

Our little Vagrant friends the Hold Steady will release their first album, Boys and Girls in America, October 3 on the emo powerhouse. Judging by the album's name, it looks as if they're fitting right in over there!

The follow-up to last year's Frenchkiss release Separation Sunday was produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Bob Dylan), tracked at Hoboken's Water Music, overdubbed at Williamsburg's Atomic Records, and mixed at NYC's Magic Shop. Extensive!

We're listening to the album right now. It's pretty great.

 Tracklist:

 01 Stuck Between Stations
 02 Chips Ahoy!
 03 Hot Soft Light
 04 Same Kooks
 05 First Night
 06 Party Pit
07 You Can Make Him Like You
 08 Massive Night
 09 Citrus
 10 Chillout Tent
 11 Southtown Girls

Yes, that Dan Joseph (9353): (http://www.forcedexposure.com/bin/search.pl?search_string=MUTABLE+17525&searchfield=exkeyword)

"Mutable Music is pleased to announce the debut release by composer and hammer dulcimer virtuoso Dan Joseph. Entitled Archaea, the recording consists of three recent extended chamber works performed by The Dan Joseph Ensemble: Tom Chiu (violin), Michael Lowenstern (clarinet), Danny Tunick (percussion), Marija Ilic (harpsichord), Loren Dempster (cello) and the composer on hammer dulcimer. Influenced most directly by the first generation minimalists, Joseph's works bring a welcome new voice to the idiom with his unique sense of timbre, intricate rhythms and unexpected formal turns. Equal parts East coast and West coast, Appalachian and Balkan, rock and baroque, his style is characterized by its immediate beauty, positive spirit and exhilarating drive."

The Mountain Goats - Get Lonely (August 22)
This will probably be in my top five albums of the year.

Now It's Overhead - Dark Light Daybreak

Quote
Now It's Overhead has more than once evoked the term "dreamy." Dark Light Daybreak is not exactly an exception ?? it's awash in the band's signature moody layers and wall of guitar. But if the previous two records were dream-like, Dark Light Daybreak is more akin to waking up.

Providing by one turn a desert-highway soundtrack, by another, a heartrending nostalgia for a moment just past the edge of memory,
Dark Light Daybreak is sharp around the edges, with each song's elements being as distinct as the whole. A syncopated beat pops against an insistent bass line. The comforting patter of a keyboard is unsettlingly punctuated by overdriven, discordant voices. And throughout, Andy LeMaster's reedy vocals, as diverse an instrument as any on the album, are as true in a fragile harmony as they are on a soaring, cathartic chorus. Whether delivering an acidic indictment or a hopeful sentiment, voice combines with lyrics to speak the collective experience of individuals.

Now It??s Overhead's latest offering sees LeMaster's seasoned production skills synthesizing songwriting and recording; letting space and clarity serve as a thread of tension that runs through the album, unifying songs that range from stark to symphonic, buoyant to tragic. The range of Leverett's drumming and the variations of Taylor and Fink's vocals shine through, adding to each song the expertise of musicians who stand back, listen, then bring exactly what needs to be there.
Dark Light Daybreak runs the songwriting gamut, leaving not a moment to be missed.
Blind Guardian - A Twist in the Myth (September 5)
I'm probably the only one on here looking forward to this album. ^_^

 M. Ward - Post-War (August 22)

Gin Blossoms - Major Lodge Victory (August 8)

The Damnwells - Air Stereo (August 15)

XTC's Partridge Combs Archives For Mammoth Box

 August 28, 2006, 3:45 PM ET

 Greg Prato, N.Y.
XTC leader Andy Partridge recently combed his vaults and discovered an exorbitant amount of rarities and outtakes, resulting in the Oct. 10th release of the nine-disc box "The Fuzzy Warbles Collectors Album." Spanning Partridge's career, the set features alternate versions of many XTC favorites, unreleased tracks and also unfinished material that Partridge revisited and completed for this release.

"Working on this stuff took many years," Partridge tells Billboard.com of the box, due via his own Ape House label. "I just kept writing -- who knows what's going to fall out? It was recorded in spare bedrooms, the kitchen, the attic and of course my now infamous garden shed. Pop songs, radio jingles, film and TV music, or just plain old goofing about."

Partridge rediscovered many forgotten tracks in the process. "'I Don't Want To Be Here' for one," he says. "Lots of folks love this song but XTC was pretty democratic, so if someone didn't go for a tune, it got binned. 'Everything' was another. One of the most touching lyrics I ever wrote -- in the toilet. 'The Bland Leading the Bland' -- so proud of this autobiographical rallying call to end that boring donut mentality. You can kind of see why I just didn't want these songs collecting dust and going unheard. We threw away better material than most bands made a career out of."

Among his other favorites: "Wonder Annual" ("I always thought XTC should have recorded this surprisingly structured psychedelic slice"), "End of the Pier" ("It would have made a great out-of-season seaside companion piece to 'Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her'") and "2 Rainbeau Melt" ("Some of my favorite-ever lyrics matched to a trippy improvised soundscape. It arrived too late for the 'Wasp Star' album").

Partridge also helped assemble the packaging, which he modeled after a child's stamp album. "How better to represent a large and diverse set of home recordings than to depict them as a series of imaginary stamps?," he says.

The artist has a number of other projects in the works, the first of which will be "a double-disc set of purely improvised music called 'Monstrance.' My partners in one-take, overdub-free, unrehearsed crime are Barry Andrews -- ex-XTC keys man from way back -- and [drummer] Martyn Barker. Let's face it, nothing short of capital punishment is going to stop me making music."

Boris Yeltsin album came out not long ago.

 Broom Info
Broom is a gem, it sparkles when it rocks, has hooks galore and should make a lasting impression once its left your player. Need a musical reference point? Think the Shins, Pavement, of Montreal, Elliott Smith. The few folks that have got their hands on the disc became instant fans. In comes a slew of kind words. Spin Magazine says, ??...could succeed the Shins as the band that ??will change your life'?, while the SF Weekly declares, ??One of those rare albums where every song is crafted, delicious, and essential.?
LP format of Broom includes three bonus songs.

 Release Date
 10/24/2006

Has anyone heard the "new" Beatles disc  Love ?   Any thoughts?  Amazon doesn't have any sound clips.  It's dirt cheap though.

I figured what the hell and bought it. I like it pretty well. I don't see why some people are saying that it's a dramatic reconstructing of the songs. In some cases, some instrumental tracks are removed or added, and there's a little mash-up involved on a couple tracks. But mostly, it's a nice compilation of mostly later-era Beatles songs, with modern production whizzies added. In fact, played on a good stereo, the sound quality is really excellent.
