Title: March Madness
Post by: HoyaSaxa03 on March 08, 2006, 03:10:00 pm
I hate Gerry McNamara and 'Cuse, but that was one hell of a shot he just made with Syracuse's NCAA hopes on the line

My friend is running a bracket pool for the NCAA's and is looking for some extra people ... it's $20/bracket and the winner gets 65%, 2nd gets 25%, 3rd 10% ... we had about 25 people last year and the winner (me!) got $325, so it's a pretty substantial pool .... you can also pay via paypal, so you don't have to worry about mailing a check in time ... PM me if you're interested and I'll send you the details

that Uconn / Cuse game was an absolute classic ... and it's still only the quarterfinals of the big east tournament, that was a final game if I've ever seen one

Cuse does it again!!! So excited that this may have gotten them off the bubble.

Sorry Hoya, I know you love the Bucs, but we are just gonna have to disagree over Big East basketball. All my family hails from the 'cuse. Huge game tomorrow...

most definitely.

i had very very mixed feelings about 'cuse winning:

 a) i hate cuse and i want them to lose every game they play =)

 b) i definitely did not want to play uconn tomorrow, and i know we can beat you guys

i've heard some syracuse fans try to get all high and mighty and say that the rivalry is dead and that georgetown fans are living in the past ... i really doubt that, tomorrow will be crazy

With the Terps winning and Florida State losing it really improves their chances of betting a bid. They're on the bubble big time. They pretty much have to beat Boston College to make the tourny. I hear Tony Kornheiser say they may be anywhere from a 12 to 9 seed if they make it in.

Yeah, I was definitely rooting for Wake yesterday. But Cuse winning and GW losing was bad news for bubble teams. Hopefully the Terps will play as well as they did last night.  Korneheiser thinks they should already be in... (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/06/AR2006030601410.html)

He's the balding guy from PTI (ESPN, 5:30 EST). He also writes for one of the Washington newspapers. Additionally, he's going to be one of the announcers on Monday Night Football.

I'm a fan, and if they beat Wisconsin tonight, they should be assured of getting in, they might get in with a loss, but they will definetely be a bubble team. If they do, I'll thank Gonzaga for winning their championship by one point.

Those Cuse fans are idiots - which helps explain why they're Cuse fans.  The rivalry is alive and well and tonight's game should be one of the best, if not the best, of the week.  Both teams are solid (but erratic) this year and w/ both teams having talent returning and great classes lined up, and w/ the Big East emerging (again) as the best conference in College BB the GU/Cuse rivalry (two years removed from Esherick, and into what will be a legendary career for JTIII) is now as good as ever and getting better.

on the drive across country, i got to listen to alot of the dan patrick show. somehow, dan patrick was able to get the espn honchos to let keith olbermann come in everyday and do an hour or so with him.  so, it's keith olbermann and dan patrick, and they do an interview with tony kornheiser.  apparently, kornheiser got a letter from espn honchos telling him that he (kornheiser) is the the most difficult on-air personality in espn history.  needless to say, olbermann was quite upset and envious of that letter.

it's hard to explain the kornheiser phenomenon ... i think his best format is his morning radio show, although i like him on PTI as well ... he's definitely an aquired taste, but he's a really unique personality and you can get addicted to his radio show pretty easily (ala Howard) ... i can definitely see why people hate him though, and he's really less of a sports guy than just an all-around radio personality, 75% of his charm has nothing to do with sports

Kornheiser has always been funny.  He's an entertainment writer posing as a sports writer . . . which is fine for espn which more and more is an entertainment channel posing as a sports channel.  he's the voice of casual/"social" sports fans.  Those who like the conversation but don't want to dig deep.  I grew to hate him as a Post writer b/c as a local sports fan I felt the city needed a sportswriter who actually understood the sports they wrote about, not just some ahole making the same dumb "les boulez" jokes.  As a comedian first, he seemed to have an interest in DC sports teams remaining terrible.  What would he write about if our teams were actually good and not run by clowns?  He doesn't make the games more interesting - he makes the conversation surrounding the game more interesting (like Mike Greenie Greenburg, another great host who straddles the line between good and tedious).

A 46 point second half lead Indiana to victory over Wisconsin.  USA 11-0 in the third.  Clemens is looking great.

Well, I just picked up Johnson this week and had Kurt Busch in the weeks before that, Busch was horrible.  Then on the second week I had a guy who didn't even qualify.  So I'm actually 12th out of about 26.  It's a salary cap league, so you have to be lucky with that fifth driver to stay under the cap.  I was lucky and got Bowyer who is cheap, but seems to be racing well.

I was in a NASCAR fantasy thing with a handful of friends the year Tony Stewart was a rookie. I took Stewart before the season started, and he finished top 5 in points, and I won the league.

Companies Fear Spread of March Madness (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/15/AR2006031502707.html)
Web-Broadcast Games Seen as Threat to Productivity, Computer Systems

 By Thomas Heath
 Washington Post Staff Writer
 Thursday, March 16, 2006; A01

The NCAA men's basketball tournament begins today, and for the first time, every game of the 19-day ritual known as March Madness will be available live -- and free -- over the Internet. The decision makers at Washington's Corporate Executive Board, for one, saw this as a potential recipe for disaster.

With visions of their 1,400 employees glued to their computer screens tuning in to see their favorite teams, the company, which sells management research to firms, has decided to disable access to Web broadcasts of the games. The reason, company officials said, is that this would avoid straining the corporate computer system. It also will keep their workers, well, working.

"When we started to look at it, once you get past the bandwidth issue it's also a business focus issue," said Derek van Bever, the company's chief research officer. "Is there any good reason to run this risk? And the answer is no."

Studies show that productivity wanes every year during the tournament. But 2006 stands to be the biggest hit ever to the workplace thanks to the decision by CBS SportsLine.com, whose parent company, CBS, holds the national broadcast rights to the 65-team tournament, to stream the games online at no cost to viewers.

One Washington area employee with a major defense contractor said the company also was making a preemptive strike by disabling computer access to CBS SportsLine.com. "In our case, we specifically blocked in an automated fashion the part of the site that was the portal to March Madness on demand, preventing us from getting to the CBS SportsLine site," said the employee, who requested that his name and the name of his company not be disclosed because he is not authorized to speak to reporters.

The federal government has 1.8 million civilian employees, raising the prospect of the government's business slowing to a crawl -- or its computer systems doing so -- if workers click to the Webcasts from their cubicles. Michael Orenstein, a spokesman for the Office of Personnel Management, which oversees federal workplace matters, said each agency sets its own policy on personal Internet use at work.

Howard Tipton, a spokesman for the Department of the Interior, said the department permits its 77,000 employees to have "limited use" of the Internet, so long as it doesn't interfere with their jobs. Only in rare instances -- often because of a disability or other special need -- are employees allowed to view streaming video, he said.

"We're not misers to the point that if somebody runs on there to check the score to see how the Orangemen are doing that anybody would be fired over it," Tipton said. "But we would have a problem if everybody tuned in and did downstreaming video, just from the bandwidth consumption and the cost to taxpayers."

While it's impossible to say how many companies are blocking Web access to the tournament, there is a growing recognition that technology is allowing March Madness to creep further into the workplace.

"It's a phenomenon that businesses have to live with forever now," said Raul Fernandez, co-owner of the Washington Capitals and chairman of ObjectVideo, a security video software company that employs 85 at its headquarters in Reston. "We are living in a world where it's not just the NCAA, but you can watch 'Desperate Housewives' or other games remotely through the Internet. For me, it falls into the category under trusting the employees to get their work done."

"We have a workforce that is Web savvy and knows how to get to what they want to get to, and we don't stop them," said John Buckley, executive vice president for corporate communications at Dulles-based America Online Inc. "We have a big belief that people will use the Web appropriately over the course of the day and get their jobs done."

Some companies recognize that basketball fans will be interested in the games. They just ask that employees follow the action responsibly.

"If my guys who work for me want to get a sandwich and sit at their desk during their lunch break and watch a game, fine," said Tom Jurkowsky, a spokesman for Bethesda-based defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. "However, if some guys are watching a game and screaming and shouting or doing it [when they're supposed to be working], it's up to the manager to take appropriate action. Our policy with respect to this type of thing is common sense."

Nitin Gupta, an analyst for Yankee Group, which evaluates the media and entertainment industry for clients, expects companies to further tighten Internet policies as Web advances allow workers greater access than ever to live sports events, television shows and films. "Maybe companies will start thinking about new policies," he said. "Some workplaces have pretty strict policies about what you can watch on screen."

Alex Riethmiller, a spokesman for CBS SportsLine.com, declined to voice an opinion about the efforts by some companies to limit access over the Web. "We're expecting to serve millions of fans over the course of the tournament," he said.

But CBS SportsLine will offer one escape hatch for workers whose bosses might frown on them spending too much time watching the games. Riethmiller said the Web site will display a "boss button" in addition to the action on the court. Click on it, he said, and the sound will shut off and the screen will switch from basketball to a spreadsheet.

"The 2006 March Madness just might be remembered for the 'boss button' that gives workers a way to quickly hide their basketball indiscretions," said John Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a Chicago-based outplacement company that estimated the tournament will cost the economy more than $3.8 billion in lost productivity.

This On Demand thing is awesome. But I don't seem to have any sound.

Edit: Apparently I can get the commentary for the Okla vs. Wisc-Mil game, but its just music for the SHU vs. Wichita St game.

I'm not doing so hot on the early games.  I had a hard time picking upsets this year, usually that's my strong point.

It's funny, I saw it when they were done by what seemed like a million, changed it to the baseball classic, turned back and the score was tied.  I just about shit myself, how could I miss a 19-0 run in what felt like five minutes.....Incredible.  I went to sleep with the Hoosiers down 42-41, they had just given up a nine point lead.

well, i did, thank you very much.  despite my shittiness last year, i am completely blowing my work pool out of the water...its not even fair, i think they are going to just give me the money now.  28 for 32 in the first rd (missed Montana, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Mich St) and only lost UNC from my Sweet 16....and yes, i have Wichita St. in the elite 8.

of course, i am lying about my bracket. haha. whatever.  first of all there are only what, 3 high seeds in the sweet 16?  George Mason, Bradley and Georgetown!

you have to look at how easy this was.

   Duke's a no brainer.
   LSU is easy too
WVU , how hard is that, they were a great team last year who lost NO ONE and had a 2nd rd. game with an overrated Big 10 team. (the overrated big 10 theme helped me out a LOT this year)
   Texas, easy aas well

   Memphis, a one seed
Bradley....well, i just picked one ok.
Gonzaga - UCLA , really those were easy too.

   now, the other side

    UCONN, a one seed
Washington, see, overrated big 10 rule.
George Mason, the one that got away
Wichita St.....well, i got on the Winthrop bandwagon, and then had to pick either Winthrop or Wichita St for the sweet 16.

Nova and BC are easy too.

    Florida was too

    Georgetown...again...see the Big10 rule.

I dont know what ESPN has or whatever, but this was NOT a crazy wacky tournament year.

maybe if some of you people would watch the games instead of just reading espn.com and listening to tony kornheiser and joe lunardi then you wouldnt think i would be making something up...which i am still chuckling at the thought that someone brought it up...yet, not surprised it was Hoya.

hey, i never accused you of lying, i'm actually very impressed that your bracket is in the top 0.000004% ....  i'm in first place in my pool right now by 3 points, but picking kansas to the final 4 might kill me

i think it was Julian who made the slightly inchoerent statement.

and yes, after looking, if i would have used ESPN.com then i would be tied for first. in the whole country.  and next year, i will join.

i still stand by my word in that if you actually WATCH college basketball...your picks will be good...if you just watch Sportscenter and PTO then you will be swarmed with other peoples misinformation and not be able to clearly pick the winners.  hoya is an example of this as he watches college games, and therefore is in first place in his pool...enough said.

my point total now being at 570, is much higher than 3 years ago when i had my best year after 2 round with 520! and i think you can look no further than the Big 10 debacle as my reason..no magic, just the conference i love to hate, sucking it up bigtime!

   and fyi....

i have Duke, Texas, Memphis, UCLA, UCONN, Wichita St, BC and Florida.

then go Texas, Memphis, UCONN, BC with UCONN over Texas in the title game.

Not really but they were talking about all the G-town fans that were there and one of them mentioned someone there or someone they met going by the name HoyaSaxa or something, and wasn't that your screen name once?

Anyway, it was early and I was probably hearing things.  I'm not really a morning person either but with a 2 year old and 4 year old we don't really need alarm clocks around here.....

Hoya Saxa is the school's cheer or motto or whatever the hell you want to call it:

someone actually made business cards with a more condensed version of that story to hand out to people at games who ask (usually after their team lost) "what the fuck is a hoya??"

So everyone knows how much I love sports and am the go to person to ask about making bets on said activities

but looking to crowd source some Brackets here.
I've got two pools that I can enter for free (work and a patreon group), but have cash prizes

so I'll agree to share 20% of the winnings if you give me a winning bracket

I didn't want to bother you, but wish I had known about your gift to Steve Mitchell. His departure from this earth has offered the story of a life well-lived. Steve was the man who sat behind you in Duke University's Cameron Indoor Stadium for the last 37 years and I know you miss him this season.

He did a lot in his sixty plus years. He was born with Down syndrome and his family shrugged off the doctors and took him right home. He was integrated in an era that made his parents ground breakers; school or church, Steve was there. I am a special needs mama too and with parenthood comes advocacy, their forging a path has benefited so many. You called Steve "a good friend who had some challenges." What a gift of inclusive language.

The story goes that in 1980 the only thing Steve Mitchell wanted for Christmas was a Duke basketball ticket, not an easy score, but Steve's brother had a construction company and was hired to renovate the new coach’s, Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski, house. He asked you how one might find a ticket to buy and explained his brother’s Christmas wish.

“He can sit behind me,” you said. Did you know how life changing that gift would be?

The following season, Steve wrote you a letter saying, “Coach, I know we’re going to have another great year. I was hoping that I could sit near you again.” You said yes to a family that may have heard no far more often. He wrote you a letter every year for 37 years and this is the first season that a ticket, reserved for one Steve Mitchell, isn’t waiting at will call. Steve would collect his ticket and make his way to his seat behind you (usually with the help of his favorite usher, Fran), a tradition that was life changing for his self-confidence, according to his family. You shook his hand before every game.

Thank you, Coach K.
