Also an excuse for me to find out if I should buy tickets in advance? After all, it's Friday night and all the hipsters may have purchased their tickets so they can stand in the middle of the room and talk loudly to one another while the show is going on. Will it sell out?
Also, looking forward to see Fico and the gang on the mainstage.
-
I hope it doesn't sell out because I'm expecting to buy at the door on Friday...
-
Thinking about it. But if their amps blow I am running out the door...
-
So what's Lake Trout like?? I heard their Woxy lounge session and a couple of tracks from their website...obviously all through the PC speakers at work so can't make a proper opinion on them...
it should be great fun and we're excited to play...many new songs and re-arrangements to old tracks..and always great to play a big sized stage...hope to see some familiar faces there..we'll most likely be pushing merch after finishing our set and loading out...so come and say hello....
-
I love Lake Trout, their latest release is on my Top 5 of this year. I've seen them twice recently and both shows were great.
They've really changed over the years. When they first started they did a lot of instrumentals and were sort of embraced by the jamband community. Hippies loved them at first, but have since turned on them because they are NOT a jamband. Indie folks have never really embraced them. Now they're sort of labeled "alternative". A review says:
"Lake Trout is a whopper of a band, and Not Them, You is the kind of disc you stuff and proudly display above your mantlepiece. They may still get lumped in with the jam band masses, but it's entirely unjustified; their current approach incorporates elements of indie groove, an electronic edge and even a dose of New Wave, then builds on that foundation with tasteful doses of psychedelia and guitar menace. The product of a year spent working with producers Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados) and Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev), Not Them, You brims with all the bravado and swagger that its title suggests."
They added more vocals and different song structures.....they got a lot of acclaim a few years ago and were picked up by Gary Kurfist, who managed the Ramones. Chris Blackwell (U2, Marley, Siouxsie) signed them to his label after he sold Island. None of that worked out, for various reasons, and they are sort of on their own now, but their agent at William Morris still really believes in them, that's how they got the opening slot for Pixies on a few dates.
Instrumentation is lead guitar, lead vocals/rhythm guitar, bass, drums, keys/flute (yes, flute).
Have a great show, wish I could be there, but I'll be out of town.

Worth it just to see their drummer. He is amazing.

Does he get more than a 10% cut?

True That...Mike Lowery is a SICK drummer.

good to see the response to this show..has anyone seen them in the area before? how well do they draw?

saw them in NYC at mercury lounge and the place was pretty packed, but i think a good number of people were there to see the openers (runner and the thermodynamics) ... the lake trout fans were 90% hippie (this was maybe 2 yrs ago) ... giving you guys a shout-out in express on friday ...

They're from Baltimore and I've seen them there and it was packed, of course. Not sure how many people they'll pull at Black Cat. A guess is 500.
-
Jam band alert!
-
I'll be there, Fico, can't wait to hear your newest work.
Lake Trout will pull lots of local friends who are ready to kick-off the holidays with them - since they've been out on a killer, back-to-back tour schedule. Just out of curiousity, who/what are these "hippies" you expert demographers stick a label on?
Many of the L.T.'s friends/fans are their chums from high school, college, and from various straight jobs they've held in the area - sort of like where some of us civilians get our friends from.

smelly, long-haired jam band fans, that was the overwhelming majority of their fans at the NYC show i went to ... there were also a lot of people there for runner (weird opener for lake trout), and a lot of people left when they were done

Are you talking to me? If so, answer: jamband fans. Hippies. Generalizations, for sure. But years ago, that was the crowd at a Lake Trout show. They used to pack Trax and it was all the Spreadheads and PhishPhans. Those fans are no longer interested since LT added more vocals and started shortening their songs.
With this band and this genre, yes, I am an expert demographer.

jajajaja...their live lounge performance at Woxy was pretty good..didn't hear anything to suggest they were a jamband...but you lot know more about them and their history than me so I'll digress...

Ah, yeah. Smelly, long-haired hippies..not to be confused with stinky-smoking short-haired or balding elite music snobs...now I get it. What do I own, btw?

edit: Wasn't even aware of YOUR original use of the word "hippie" Arlette. Glad you enjoy being recognized as an expert demographer, however.

Why the hostility so often? Seriously. You seem to not like the generalization of hippies but then you turn around and generalize quite often by accusing anyone who disagrees with you on any topic of being an elite music snob.
I am far from being an elite music snob. My favorite band of all time is U2. Here's another good one: when I hear Nickelback's new song Photograph on the radio, I DON'T turn it off, I actually find myself singing along. I like some of the so-called "jambands" as much as I like My Bloody Valentine or Kasabian or The Stone Roses.
Anyway, I've been around music for a long time (read: I'm old), so I happen to know a lot about certain genres and not much on others. This one I happen to know about. That's all I was saying.

I'm a resident hater of all things hippie, and I like Lake Trout. I've never thought of them as hippie or jam shit, in fact, the first time I heard one of their CDs in a club, I thought it sounded like Kid A-era Radiohead.
-
I remember when I lived in Baltimore ten years ago and I had a friend who was into them, I certainly think they were considered jam bandish back then.
-
So back to my original question.... Friday night sell-out?

I believe they started as a jam band in the early 90s, but have changed a lot since. Woxy asked them about being known as a 'jam band' during their lounge set, and they seemed quite offended. Kid A-era Radiohead is a good comparison..

"You talking to me?" Isn't hostile? I was addressing myself to someone who has posted here an insane number of times and who attacks every new fan who posts here, outside of the, ahem, 930 Forum Pit-Bull Club.
I am also OLD with a long history as a music fan, musician and promoter of local bands. I am - perhaps more polite and less-narrow minded than you think - and have very often shared your tastes in music, including those bands listed in your posting above.
You may not know it, but this forum has become fairly well-known for hostility, rudeness, aggression, and intolerance. I'm sure ggw can find the remarks in the Post on-line and DCist to back this up, and I've tried not to participate in the attacks - but on occasion, I slip and go after Peter who seems off-the-hook mean. Sorry.
-
Can't we all just get along, attend the show, enjoy it and then buy boatloads of merch from the boys in Cedars??
-
Wow, you're more pathetic than I ever imagined.
And I though it was bad that one of my wife's coworkers said some Mariah Carey song was her favorite Christmas song of all time.
But you have taken the cake!!!

can you explain to me where i was mean on here? i simply said there were a bunch of hippies at lake trout's NYC show a couple of years ago and you completely flipped out ...

I believe this is what you are looking for, and to me it's a ringing endorsement :D
Rhome: You know, I've never really read them. Care to toss out any specific ones? The few I've seen smelled faintly of being driven by an agenda, that clique'ish type vibe. I'm a big fan of staying up on the calendars of the local venues and going out regularly to check out stuff you've never heard. Most bands have websites with mp3's, or you can always preview material at washingtonpost.com/mp3. And if you stay tuned to this space, you might just see a new blog. Hmmmm...
Joe: Not a blog really, but I regularly amused by the discussions in the 9:30 club's forums page - especially when they are all bashing each other. The one problem I have with many of the local music blogs I've read (I won't name names) is the obsession with indie rock...and only indie rock. Gets boring pretty quickly.

Personally, it's the sarcasm and bashing that keeps me coming back. Without it this place would be duller than that dirt sandwich I just ate.

I really don't think I post an insane amount, in fact you joined after me and have double the posts. I also think I am very helpful to new people and am never mean to them. I can only think you have me confused with someone else.
Now Rhett is saying he's always imagined me pathetic (I guess I should be flattered that he even ever imagined me), so this thread has obviously gone into weird hostile territory.
I posted initially trying to give Fico some info about the band he was playing with. I'm with him, let's just all get along.
To use a hippie phrase: Peace. Out.
-
don't see much mention on dcist, they talk about the angry post coldplay concert thread but little else
and one of angriest threads of late here involved the discussion over the Bush daughters and The Secret Machines
-
Ever noticed how recently the worst hostility and derailment of threads is caused by Bas Sushi "going off" on something completely trivial? Today we have the word hippy.
The only good hippy is a dead hippy.

Anyone see South Park last night? I believe it was a repeat but dealt with the serious topic of taking out hippies, and I don't mean on a date.

Don't go thinking you're anything special. I've imagined everyone here to be pathetic, and thus far, nobody has gone on to disappoint.

If singing along to a cheesy mainstream rock song on the radio is your criteria for pathetic, then I am definitely very pathetic. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Thank you for clarifying this!
Can't say that I've known much about them so was very confused when I heard their song played on 3wk.com several times of recent. You see, I always knew, or at least thought, they were a Jam band. Then I kept hearing some new song on 3wk and it wasn't a Jam song by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I kind of liked it which surprised me. Guess you could say it's now more simple Indie Rock. By simple, I mean that it's not loaded with effects, screaming, whining, experimentation or any other feature that some Indies go into.
Sounds like it should be a good show that will attract new fans for each band.

HAHAHAHAH. I only post every few weeks now due to the fact it was becoming a time waster, and I found the most underemployed and bored on here TRY HARD TO STIR UP TROUBLE...just to entertain themselves and the pack. You've just proven my point.
Arlette: Turn-on your personal message feature; when someone wants to say something nice to you, they might leave it as a PM since anything nice on the public forum is FLAMED.
Finally, that was one of the best line-ups at the Black Cat I've seen in a while. Fico, your new 4-man staging is fabulous and you guys sounded excellent
As for those who missed Gun and Lake Trout...us dirty smelly hippies had quite a nice time and these musicians gave us the best music played there in a while; the fact they're all locals made it even sweeter.
-
Fico works..?
<img src="http://www.b3tards.com/uploads/santa2.gif" alt=" - " />
-
great set fico, like i told you there, that last song you guys played might be my favorite yet ... sounded a lot like a U2 single ... didn't get there early enough for gun, or stick around for lake trout, but i'm sure they were fantastic
-
Hey Fico, talk about synchronicity, just as I clicked on this thread, your song "Fleets" started playing on KRR.
Sorry I couldn't make the show. Hope all went well.
Oh, btw, I found another (C)artel except that they spell it Kartel. Think they are French. Need to go back and check them out again as my ears were busy but from what I heard, I think they may have been pretty decent. Maybe the 3 of you could form some kind of cartel and do a tour. You know, a 'if you can't beat them, join them' kind of thing. :p
-
Fico:
Heard y'all friday. There was one bit in one song that sounded familiar from another song, but otherwise great and original.
My one beef, your guitarist has to tune more. I had to leave the room for one song because he was so out of tune. Right after that song he tuned, apoligizing when I thought he should have apologized for the last one. Please, when you change the capo's point, you need to retune.
Oh, and from the back it was muddy, but sounded great where people were. I will have to get the CD.
-
Sir HC is being very kind here.
There seems to be more than just ONE minor beef. Maybe you should seriously consider taking over as guitarist for the band? Give the bass duties to that sour note flunky. Maybe you'll do more than just make 28th on the accursed Kraut (http://tinyurl.com/86tb7) charts.
Perhaps then you'ld breakthrough to absolute superstardom in the stellar Frog charts?
-
Well thanks to everyone who came and thanks for the feedback, we learn a lot from it. As Sushi said it was a good night all around...I think everyone in attendance was impressed by "Gun" who opened the show..it was only their second show but they were on top form...the singer for GUN used to be the singer in Phaser so the band seems to be formed around veterans of the local scene..fantastic drummer as well...
Lake Trout was pretty good as well...there was a lot of crowd chatter throughout the night which was rather annoying but it's part of the scene I reckon...
anywho...thanks for coming and hope to see some of you sometime next year along with a new EP in early spring...going on xmas vacation tomorrow for 3 weeks back in the island...bliss!

I knew I recognized the singer from GUN and thought of Phaser. Are they no longer together?
Great job Fico, the bands sound is maturing. But what happened to your second guitarist? I thought he added quite a bit.

I won't go as far as saying that Phaser have completely broken up but I guess they have with the option of reforming if they so choose. Or maybe I'm just still in denile. Very sad day in my life but not completely shocked as you could clearly hear their musical directions splintering off into various directions if you've seen their last couple of shows. I tried to book them for a show but they refused solely for their own reasons and nothing to do with the booking itself. So sad for their fans.
Boris, Siayko's (Gun) brother, is now in a band called Dead Heart Bloom whose debut CD is just about ready for release. They are sending me a copy. :D Paul Wood and I think a couple of the other Phaser guys have contributed little pieces to it but it's not Phaser. You can definitely hear Boris' influence. Sort of along the lines of Phaser's "Sweet Marie". Kind of dark in their own way but not what you would call Dark Wave. I think Paul is involved in some other project himself but not sure of what yet.
-
I thought all three bands put on a great show.
Gun were really fantastic- all were seasoned musicans, that was obvious.
Cedars had a couple of songs that reall stood out as well, one near the beginning and a couple at the end. Look forward to hearing more from these guys on '06. Certainly the band of the night in terms of writing a "single" or a tune with a true hook.
Lake Trout were solid, as they have always been in recent years.
All three groups fit well sonically for a 3 band bill. Good night all the way around.
-
I just realized who Cedars reminded me of, Bowery Electric, and I like Bowery Electric.

Oh, that's bad news! I love Phaser. Too bad, but will have to check out their new bands/projects. Jag, when you get that debut CD, can you give a report and info on where to get it?
I'm late on this, have been out of town, but how did the Lake Trout/Cedars show sell? Anyone who was there, have a guess on how many people? Just curious how Lake Trout is drawing in D.C.
BadSushi, I love to hear nice things! And on this board it would certainly be an exception. Screw people here who would flame over something like that. I would turn on this PM thing you speak about it, but I've no idea what it is.

It was a very modest crowd, not packed at all. About 20 rows deep....... But the bars were jammed with chatty people. Is the cat now the spill over crowd from Saint-Ex?
