I suppose you have trouble relating to a list that doesn't include anything prior to 1993....
-
Give the guy some credit, I think he's going to see Belle and Sebastian. Mankie, you do know that's a band and not that childrens book, don't you?
-
NMH as number one MIGHT be stretching it. Have they ever been number one on any list? they were due.

GGW is so lame he could give his over-used tired old jokes a number at this point...he would only need the fingers on one hand to take care of them all.

I won't even begin to say what is wrong with that list. I own about 75% of those records...most of them are good, a few even great. Before everyone rips me a new one for my taste in music, I'd really be curious to see what other people put in their top 20...because maybe there are some classic records out there I've overlooked and should buy. My list would run something like this:
20) Air Miami -- Me, Me, Me
19) Sugar -- Beaster EP
18) Air -- Moon Safari
17) Boo Radleys -- Giant Steps
16) Moby -- Everything is Wrong
15) Chemical Brothers -- Dig Your Own Hole
14) New Order -- Get Ready
13) Queens of the Stone Age -- Songs for the Deaf
12) Shellac -- At Action Park
11) Yo La Tengo -- And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
10) Heatmiser -- MIC City Sons
9) Belle and Sebastian -- If You're Feeling Sinister
8) Radiohead -- OK Computer
7) Paw -- Dragline
6) Social Distortion -- Live at the Roxy
5) Jawbreaker - Dear You
4) PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea
3) Red House Painters - Red House Painters (rollercoaster cover)
2) Elliott Smith -- Figure 8
1) Catherine Wheel -- Chrome

Well I would appear to have 6 of those albums, dont think any of the ones I have are that great. Maybe Urban Hymns would scrape my top 20, but I doubt it.
Calexico is fine, but it really isnt that great.
Super furry animals rings around the world
Delgados Hate
would make my list though, but I find it hard to remember what makes the cut off.... I didnt think that breeders album would make it.

Where is Ned's Atomic Dustbin?

They had three or four good songs, in total.....
Lambchop and nixon would be another reasonable choice.

God Fodder came out too early (1991) for the list.
-
There are actually 60 albums on the list in the magazine.
-
I would definitely include
The Shape of Punk To Come - Refused
De Stijl - White Stripes
Remote Part - Idlewild
Distored Lullabies - Ours
Dig Your Own Hole - Chemical Brothers
Hail To The Thief I of course
and maybe that first Staind album (dont kill me)
-
Jeff Buckley - Grace
-
nmh is on every critics list, makes sense that it gets number one. i always favored bee thousand over alien lanes, crooked rain should be higher, but that's about as solid a list as you could expect from a magazine. excluding nirvana.
-
agreed.
but Tortiose shouldnt be on ANYONES list. They are horrible.
and Nirvana i think won a spot on every list ever made...for some reason.

But:
 1990Â
 101 Damnations
Â
 1991Â
 30 Something
101 damnations is their best, but its too old all the other albums are not that good from what remember.
-
being magnet, i was surprised that "penthouse" wasn't on that list. speaking of which, anyone notice dean wareham on law and order this week?
-
The Ned's atomic Dustbin comment was a joke.
You guys don't seriously like them do you? They rank right there With EMF and Jesus Jones in the garbage bin of 90's bad music...
Just because something is "alternative" doesn't make it good!
-

Why do you think I brought Carter USM up? Jesus Jones and EMF are also great examples of complete crap....yet more proof that the 90's was a bad time for Brit music.

Because Michael Stipe said he would hold his breath until he puked if they weren't on the list.
When was Definately Maybe released? Early Oasis should be on a stupid list like that.
-
Sorry, not famliar enough with Carter to have grasped your comment properly...

Top 20 of the 90s? Maybe not. Top 100, definitely.

not what your bible says...
Say it with me: "Kill! Your! Television!" Jesus Jones, what a joke. I don't know how anyone took these twats seriously, but it really happened. With their cherubic, retarded lead singer flopping around like a muppet on fire, Ned Atomic Dustbin's shook their long-on-top dos to the prevailing beat-- namely shoegaze. A pinch of Swervedriver, a touch of Ride, the cheesy Peavey distortion of a thousand bad L.A. bands and some timely looks? International superstardom was a lock. If only John Penney were as dead sexy as Jesus Jones' Mike Edwards, Ned's might have had a shot.
Actually, they just needed a follow-up single, because although "Grey Cell Green" is crack to every college freshman that hears it at some party or on some friend's mixtape, it's hardly enough to secure this album a place in the permanent collection when the beer money grim reaper comes calling a year later. There's actually a band named Grebo now, after the embarrassingly short-lived, overeager "genre" the Brit press coined to discuss Ned's, Carter USM, EMF, The KLF and Pop Will Eat Itself. This year Ned's sank to their inevitable low, releasing the awfully titled Terminally Groovy greatest hits disc. There are plenty of reasons to be nostalgic for the early 90s; these guys aren't one of them.

WOW...Carter USM!! I am SO glad that other folks here remember them. I stayed at Fruitbat's house when I went to London in 1999...he's one of the nicest folks ever. It was kind of funny to see his gold records for "30 Something" and "1992: the Love Album" in his bathroom. They really did make some great records. Their last one "I Blame the Government" was pretty depressing, but I did enjoy "Worry Bomb" a lot. He and Jim Bob wrote some great tunes.
-
Should be considered:
Massive Attack 'Mezzanine'
Beck 'Odelay' (or Mutations)
Outkast 'Stankonia'
Spiritualized 'Pure Phase'
Luna 'Penthouse'
Palace Brothers 'Viva Lost Blues'
Sparklehorse 'It's a Wonderful Life'
The Verve 'Northern Soul' -- instead of Urban Hymns
Blur 'Parklife'
Clinic 'Internal Wrangler'
Radiohead 'The Bends'

How come? I never got to see them live and I was always disappointed by that.
I like all the grebo bands, even jesus jones. Their first album, liquidizer, is well worth a dollar for info freako.
-
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space by Spiritualized would be number 1 on my list.
XTRMNTR by Primal Scream
The Hour of Bewilderbeast by BDB
The Contino Sessions by Death In Vegas
K&D Sessions by Kruder and Dorfmeister

Millions Now Living... is brilliant. Would be top 20 on my list, for sure.
But Crooked Rain is my numero uno. I'd also have to stick Morphine â?? Cure for Pain, Tom Waits â?? Bone Machine and Bee Thousand in there. And where the hell is Soft Bulletin? Could arguably be #1...

This list is ridiculous. Not a single Americana/alt-country album (Summerteeth hardly qualifies)? Give me a break.

I listened to them once (more famliar with Giant Sand, who I don't like), but this description cites a number of non-Americana influences: Morricone, Portuguese fado (whatever that is?) and Afro-Peruvian music.
My guess is Calexico is more of a hipster hybrid sort of band than an Americana band.
Calexico, a Tucson collective of musicians focused around Joey Burns and John Convertino, forged an eclectic identity through their exploration of Southwestern culture. Composer Ennio Morricone's spaghetti Westerns as well as Portuguese fado; Afro-Peruvian music; and '50s and '60s jazz, country, and surf music all factored into Calexico's music.

I would have to put Old 97's Too Far to Care on the list, and replace Summerteeth with Being There.
Also, it seems silly not to have Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne on the list, given that most rock critics have hailed them as legends.

That's exactly why they didn't ask for your opinion when they compiled the list.
