i kept repeating tracks 5-7 from the smith's "the queen is dead" during my commutes today
"cemetry gates"
"bigmouth strikes again"
"the boy with the thorn in his side"
doesn't get much better than those 3 in a row ... well, maybe tracks 2-4 from sgt. pepper's:
"with a little help from my friends"
"lucy in the sky with diamonds"
"getting better"
any more?
-
Therapy? Caucasian Psychosis
"Loser Cop"

actually, i'd have to put in my vote for
"Golden Slumbers,"
"Carry That Weight," and
"The End" off Abbey Road
and i'm going to have to go with any three songs, as well, from 13 songs...that album flows so well...

but how can you cut off "polythene pam" and "she came in through the bathroom window" from that sequence? the whole second side of that album is just one great multi-part song ... "bathroom window" is one of my favorite beatles tunes, i'd love to hear a 3 min version

AND one more:
"Born Under Punches"
"Crosseyed and Painless"

one I've always liked was the closing run of REM's Automatic for The People.....Man on The Moon, Nightswimming, and Find The River
-
U2's Joshua Tree, opening three:
1. Where The Streets Have No Name
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
3. With or Without You
Death Cab for Cutie's Transatlanticism:
6. Tiny Vessels
7. Transatlanticism
8. Passenger Seat
-
Joshua Tree as a whole just flows really well, too.
-

This is a good one. I remember that sequence being called out in a review (Rolling Stone I think) when it first came out.
Another one...it's only 2 songs, but "Airbag" and "Paranoid Android" flow together really well. I have them joined as one file so they always play together when the iPod is on shuffle.
-
Closing out Tim by the Replacements
Left of the Dial
Little Mascara
Here Comes a Regular
And the opening three from the Unforgettable Fire (a much better record than Joshua Tree, in my opinion)
A Sort of Homecoming
Pride
Wire
Can't believe both of these came out over 20 years ago.
-
I would have gone with:
My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)
Thrasher
Ride My Llama
Others:
Bad Religion - Suffer
Suffer
Delerium of Disorder
Part II (The Numbers Game)
Johnny Cash - American Recordings
Tennessee Stud
Down There By The Train
Redemption
Zappa/Mothers - Were Only In It For the Money
Let's Make the Water Turn Black
The Idiot Bastard Sun
Lonely Little Girl

First three, the fact that they are somewhat related in theme helps.

How can you not include the title track too? It flows right into "a little help". In fact, I'd say 1-3 works better than 2-4.

What's with the youth of today and the Beatles obsession? It's music that my dad likes ferchrissakes!
The Beatles suck! They ruined rock and roll.
-
Oh right...because music has sucked so much since 1969. :)

This statement -- even if in jest, irony or assholiness -- cannot be allowed to stand. The Beatles invented modern rock and roll. Noone compares. Not Elvis, not Dylan, not Maiden. In terms of quality, global impact, development and longevity, nothing and noone can compare.
My three favorite three-song sequences:
Meat Puppets II:
8 New Gods
9 Oh, Me
10 Lake of Fire
Jesus & Mary Chain Psychocandy
11 My Little Underground
12 You Trip Me Up
13 Something's Wrong
Minutemen Buzz or Howl Under Influence of Heat
6 I Felt Like a Gringo
7 The Product
8 Little Man with a Gun in His Hand
If I had to come up with a fourth, I'd agree with Betty's concluding trio from Abbey Road.

Correction. The Beatles are rock n roll. Without them, there would be nothing.
-
Radiohead, The Bends:
"(Nice Dream)"
"Just"
"My Iron Lung"
Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea:
"The King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. One"
"The King of Carrot Flowers, Pts. Two & Three"
"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"
-
One of my faves is from the Buzzcocks' "A Different Kind of Tension" LP:
4) You Know You Can't Help It
5) Mad Mad Judy
6) Raison d'Etre

This is a GREAT choice.
Tho I'd cut it down to just the last two.
Nightswimming is probably the best REM song that gets no love.
*************
I like these:
Tracks 2,3 & 4 on Sticky Fingers (RS):
Sway
Wild Horses
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
and
Tracks 2,3 & 4 on Gentlemen (Afghan Whigs):
Gentlemen
Be Sweet
Debonair

WHIGS 1965:

Had to know it was coming from me...
Clutch - "Blast Tyrant"

Track 2 - Profits of Doom
Track 3 - The Mob Goes Wild
What a way to start an album off. Three solid heavy rock numbers that leave you breathless and tired from singing along.

on the beach

ambulance blues
laid back epitomized
that neutral milk album rox too
-
ryan adams - "heartbreaker", #s 2-5
"to be young"
"my winding wheel"
"amy"
"oh my sweet carolina"
it would be better without "amy", but i could definitely listen to those on a loop for a long time
-
oh, and for REM, i'd take tracks 3-5 from "reckoning":
"So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)"
"Pretty Persuasion"
"Time After Time (Annelise)"
although that whole first side (1-5) is pretty much perfect (hard to leave "harborcoat" and "7 chinese brothers" out)
-
Iggy Pop's Lust for Life...1)Lust for Life...2)Sixteen...3)Some Weird Sin

i think that wowee zowee is just so disjointed, there's no sense that it's going anywhere. that being said, father to a sister of thought is one of my favorite pavement songs.
however, when a song from wowee zowee comes up on my ipod, i don't skip it. individually, i like the songs, as an album. . .ehhh. sort of also how i feel about rem's "green."

malkmus always said it was an album best appreciated on shuffle, and it makes sense. i'll always like "crooked rain" most for sentimental reasons, but "wowee zowee" is definitely the best in my book. it's got that perfect midpoint of slacker charm but malkmus also really trying to make a great album. "slanted" has tons of classic tunes, but it's very one-dimensional, fidelity-wise. WZ's got everything -- faux brit-folk, snotty punk, kraut-rock, slide guitar country rock, etc. i've always maintained that it's like their "exile on main street" and it will take a couple decades for people to really catch on. so i guess we've got 10 more years. and if it wasn't for "flux=rad," the "grave architecure"/"at & t"/"fight this generation" trio would be tough to top.
-

ok, i'll agree with that. which begs a question- did pavement purposefully throw in a crappy song to mix things up? as i noted above, take out 5-4=unity and unfair, gold soundz and range life are classic pavement songs. . .what i can't remember is, and smackie made the reference above, was the album made for album/tape or cd? obviously, that would make a difference on setting up the tracks.

i think pavement was always doing little things to fuck with people. i remember when WZ was released the promo copies had wrong song titles and all the reviews had bad titles. and yeah, "unfair," "gold soundz" and "range life" were three of their easiest to like songs, so of course they'd throw their brubeck tribute in the middle. they certainly weren't a band to frontload an album.

i was gonna say that any three consecutive songs from "bringing it all back home," "highway 61 revisited" or "desire" (not counting any strings that include "joey") would be better than anything mentioned here, but, y'know. no need to bring dylan into a silly (but fun) game like this.

I've always thought every great record has to have a really kick-ass three song suite that you could just listen to on repeat all day...or at least I've found that to be the case on the ones that I fall in love with.
Anyway, not sure if I'd classify AiH's "In Case We Die" as a truly great record....but I could definitely listen to these three on repeat:
4. Wishbone
5. Maybe You Can Owe Me
6. Do the Whirlwind

The Widows CD
These 3 songs are at the end of the disc and always make me want to start the CD over again from the beginning, especially since the 1st song, I Couldn't Tell You, is just as good and powerful as this trio of songs. The 1st 2 songs on this list actually slide right into each other making them a natural pair.

As far as pavement goes, I would say the first three songs from Brighten the Corners:
1.Stereo
2.Shady Lane
3.Transport is Arranged

1.Doin the Cockroach
