First of all, I understand that going on tonight was a decision made by the band and not by 930 Club management.
Second of all, I understand that with a large group, it's normal that some members might not be at shows. Dan isn't on this tour -- we knew that. Neko joined the tour in Toronto; she was in Munhall and Columbus and Ithaca on 4/13, though she was sick.
I understand that people get sick, and can't do their jobs, and need rest. I don't fault Neko at all.
But -- I don't understand why the show wasn't canceled entirely. Why go on without Neko when she was billed as being there? Why not reschedule (or not, and give refunds)?
Essentially, tonight was an AC Newman show. Which is fine ... I would have still been there -- but I would have had much different expectations. Given how AC recently called DC the band's "stronghold," why disappoint a loyal crowd? How is it fair that, by the luck of the draw, people who bought 4/15 tickets might see a fuller band?
Bottom line: The show should've been canned, and I'm so disappointed -- and judging from the stillness of the crowd, and the sparseness of applause, and the amount of early empty spots in the parking lot, I can't be the only one.

I sold my ticket when I found out Neko wasn't going to be there. Looks like I made the right decision. I bet it was still wonderful though, I just wouldn't want to see them without Neko this time. That's all.
-
How did you find out ahead of time that she wasn't going to be there? That would be good to know for the future -- we would've bailed as well, if we had known -- because of course we will try to see them again.

No, I'm speaking more from a special case standpoint, it was nothing officially posted anywhere. I knew because I showed up somewhat early to the club to meet up with a friend and found out through them, then found someone looking for a ticket and sold them the one I was going to use for myself.
I'm pretty sure they'll be back though...with Neko.
-
Umm, hello...you're forgetting that this is Carl Newman's band, not Neko's. Granted I was also super bummed that she wasn't there, but the show was excellent in my opinion. I hope you stuck around the whole show because they did 2 encores with the last encore totally unplanned. The crowd were still during the first few songs and clapping was sparse but as the show progressed, the band got better and better. Plus, the setlist was just perfect. We got "Slow Descent...", "Letter from Occupant", .... all the ones I wanted to hear. They did Neko AND Dan songs. I thought Kathryn did a mighty fine job. I'm sorry you didn't like it.
P.S. Did you at least like Okkervil River?

I don't recall letter from an occupant.
Set list was great and Kathryn did a great job, but she's not Neko. I think they should have at least announced that Neko wasn't going to be there to give everyone a choice. They didn't have to offer refunds. Just let us know. The tickets were already sold (so the band and the club make their money), but the ticket holders would have had the option of selling their tickets to other fans who wanted to see the band regardless of whether Neko was there. I'm one of those people, but I was very disappointed that we were told she would be there and then she wasn't. I agree that it's a lame game of chance being a fan and not knowing whether she'll be there even when she is on tour with the band.

wow, dc people whine a lot.

-
Yeah, I don't get the issue. Neko's a glorified back-up singer in the NP's anyway, and I thnk Carl's niece did a hell of a job filling in. Plus, she's pretty cute to look at.
I haven't seen them since their Black Cat show for Electric Version, and while I'm not sure I'd see them again, it was a fun show.
P.S. Joe, there was no "Letter." Do you ever listen to the bands before you go see them? :D

This is my opinion, and musical elitists won't like it (enjoy the music for it's value, you aren't a real fan then, etc.) but if you go on tour to support an album, then play three songs off of the album, chances are people will be mad. Especially newer fans like myself.
I was upset, for sure--I went for the Neko sound. She is what I enjoy about their music, her sound in particular. She gives them an undeniable edge.
And I can appreciate good music, sure. But when I'm expecting one thing and get something else, I think I can justifiably be upset. No one wanted her to go on when sick, we're not a-holes. But if I don't show up to a meeting I'm supposed to lead, I usually cancel/reschedule.
Okkervil River was freaking awesome, though, and worth at least 3/4 the price of admission. They showed up NP IMO. So maybe, the cancellation would've been bad. I change my mind on that.
-
I thought Okkervil was great. We actually went to see them and bailed partway through the NP set. I interviewed Will Sheff before the show and he was engaging and friendly. I'm surprised they didn't headline their own show.
-
I was there for Okkervil, so I was happy. I left after the third or fourth NP song. Not a big fan, but I do like the Neko songs. I wasn't planning on staying the whole time anyway since I'm going again tonight, and my friends are gonna want to see NP. Hopefully Neko's feeling better tonight...
-
Sorry, I meant "MASS ROMANTIC". Really, really surprised they did that one!!!

Great set last night. What was the name of the Super Furry Animals song you played before Okkervil? At least I think it was SFA...

Anyone know the set list for Okkervil River? Thanks.

Glad you liked it! I'll post the full list later today
The SFA song was Run-Away from last years (hugely underrated imo) Hey Venus! (http://www.emusic.com/album/Super-Furry-Animals-Hey-Venus-MP3-Download/11066912.html)

hunh, i specifically did not buy tickets to this show because i could not confirm that neko would be there before it sold out. i am curious to know how people knew for sure she was supposed to be there, because i couldnt find anything promising neko

I'm doing this from memory, so I'm not sure if it's the exact order:
The President's Dead
Black
A Hand to Take Hold of the Scene
The Latest Toughs
A Girl in Port
A Stone
You Can't Hold the Hand of a Rock and Roll Man
Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe
It Ends With a Fall
Unless It's Kicks
For Real
Westfall
Kinda disappointed Jonathan wasn't there, but it was awesome seeing Charles Bissel on guitar. I was hoping they'd play the Wrens' "Ex-Girl Collection" again. Maybe tonight. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same exact set...
And thanks brennser! I definitely plan on picking up that SFA album soon.
-
Hey Venus is an amazing pop album. Very concise (36 minutes) and fun to listen to. Highly recommended.
-
Yeah- Hey Venus is really awesome!

I didnt see the show, but if they played only 3 songs from Challengers, thats sorta lame.
-
I actually like AC Newman's last solo album alot more than anything the NP's have done. I'm not sure why. Did anybody find it appreciably different than the NP's?
-
Can someone tell me about what time Okkervil River hit the stage last night? I am going tonight and want to make sure I get there in time. Website reads 8:00, but that seems awfully early.
Thanks.
Bummer that Neko Case probably won't be there.

Yeah, set times were pretty exact. The whole thing was over around 11.
Really hope we get Ex-Girl Collection tonight.
As for the number of Challengers songs, I count 6. Whoever counted three just wasn't paying attention or doesn't really know the album that well. So much for being a TNP neophyte
-
any chance that neko will show up tonight?
-
NPorno w/o NCase is more like Broken Social Scene without Amy, Emily, or Feist.

yikes people usually complain when bands only focuses on the newest record in concert... I'm guessin' that since this the second swing of this tour then promoting the new record isn't the top priority.
-
i thought the begining was a little rocky...and out of tune, but their cover of ELO's 'don't bring me down' was one of the cutest and happiest things i've ever seen.
-
The far more jarring part of the show was when the NPs did Dan Bejar's songs. They did them well, but nobody quite sounds like him, so it was odd to hear normal sounding voices sing those songs.
I was disappointed Neko wasn't able to go on. She certainly adds a special something, nobody sounds like her, but I had no idea if she'd even be there when I bought the ticket way back when. Good show, worth the time and money, had much more energy than I would have thought for a Monday night.
-
This show had to have been better than the time they warmed up for Belle & Sebastien when Kathryn was sick and unable to sing at all... Had to have been one of the most awkward performances I've ever seen.

They definitely played six-- "All the Things That Go To Make Heaven and Earth," "My Rights Versus Yours," "All The Old Showstoppers," "Challengers," "Unguided," and "Adventures in Solitude." I thought it was a well-chosen set, and Neko or not, I thought they put on a great show and I was glad to have seen them. I've never seen them with Neko, so maybe that would make the difference in helping me understand the whining more. No complaints about last night from me though.
Also, Charles Bissell being there was a definite highlight for me. I won't be there tonight so if "Ex-Girl Collection" is played, I'll be really jealous!
-
this is really disappointing, I hope she's able to make it to the Richmond show.

The toad's place website advertised the show in Richmond on Wed. as "featuring Neko Case" way back when tickets went on sale (can't find the link now) and I think the new pornographers generally advertised their tour this way which is why some people are disappointed. Also, Dan's also not there so without Neko AND Dan a big chunk of the band is missing.

yeah for real. without Neko and Dan the NPs play opening slots.

Here's a hint:
1) Close your eyes.
2) Listen to the female voice.
3) Mentally picture Neko.
That's really all that missing.
As for two bigs chunks of the band missing, how many tours has Bejar even been on? One or two? That's definitely a vast majority of shows without him.
I'm honestly curious: what's the big deal about having Neko there? A pretty voice? The bragging rights of seeing her on stage? I don't really get the draw.

Well in that case, why not just get another Canadian with a lisp to fill in for AC Newman and close your eyes and imagine he's there. I'm sure tickets would be a lot cheaper.
Have you seen Neko Case play with them? She has an amazing voice and blows Kathryn Calder out of the water.
--also-- I'm not arguing that the show "should have been canceled", I'm sure it will be a great show anyway if she's not there when I see them, I'm just explaining that she adds a lot to their show and because it was billed (in Richmond and other cities at least) as "featuring Neko Case", people are going to be disappointed when she's not there.
-
I'm with nkotb on this one. In fact during Bleeding Heart Show last night, I remembering thinking to myself, damn, she is totally nailing Neko's soaring vocal at the end of the song.....

Yeah, I saw her with them at the Black Cat on the Electric Version tour. She struck me as no more than a glorifed back-up singer, like I mentioned above. If memory serves me correctly, she sang lead on maybe two songs. Maybe.
I get your point about Newman, but would you be bitching if Dahle were sick? I mean, his singing is pretty integral to one or two songs, and he sings back up on a few more. Seems to hold just as much weight, if you ask me. Of course, he's not quite as attractive, but whatever.

When I saw them last fall she sang lead vocals on a lot more than 1 or 2 songs. Challengers and Twin Cinema feature her more than the first 2 albums did.

Yeah, but those songs aren't nearly as good :D

I don't either -- that's what I'm trying to say. I thought they were fantastic without her and that Kathryn did a great job in her own right, but I was offering room for the possibility that since I really don't know what shows with Neko are like, maybe there's something I'm missing that would justify the whining about her absence. As it is, I thought it was a great show and I didn't really care one way or another about Neko being there.

the bragging rights, i would imagine. everyone who saw BSS at Lollapalooza in 06 with what, almost everyone there, feels really cool that they did. if you people all just lived in Canada, none of this would be such a hassle!

Good lord. I bet...
-
to me the bottom line is you have to accept that ac newman is the only member that is ever a sure bet to show up at a np show, unless they bill the tour differently from the get go. they didnt do that here, so no one should have been surprised
now, it takes away from my enjoyment of the band if neko and bejar arent there, and i'd go if at least either are supposed to be there. they didnt bill it that way when tickets went on sale, though
-
I love Neko, but she really doesn't look like that.

Actually, Challengers (and Twin Cinema, I can't remember) features her less than Electric Version in terms of lead vocals.
Anyhow, sorry to hear Neko wasn't feeling well and didn't play the show last night. As others have said, she can't be expected to play every tour, but people will inevitably be disappointed if they expected her to be there.
-
...updates? who went last night?

According to comments on DCist, Neko played the show last night, but sat during half of it because she's broken her foot.
-
Hey, if you play pool like that, in those shoes, you risk breaking a foot.

-
I went back again last night. (I told myself I was just going to an AC Newman show to lower my own expectations.) I knew there'd be varying opinions when I posted the original post -- but she was there last night, and the whole set, the whole club, seemed to have a different vibe. It was fuller and richer, and just all around better -- I left there feeling giddy. There's something to be said for seeing at least three-quarters of the full band.
Does anyone have the set list? I know they played Star Bodies, My Rights vs. Yours, Unguided, Mass Romantic, Letter From an Occupant, Adventures in Solitude (the high point of the show for me), The Bleeding Heart Show (the second highest point of the show for me, as a Phoenix University graduate), It's Only Divine Right, Twin Cinema, Use It, These Are the Fables ... but at this point I have no clue about order. I was surprised they didn't play 'Slow Descent' in the encore.
Also, I don't think Neko really broke her ankle.
-

I guess this is what I get for taking information from strangers with questionable comprehension of sarcasm.
Oh good god, Letter from an Occupant. I hope they pull that one out tonight.
-
Just for the record these shows were never billed as The New Pornographers w/ Neko Case. Unfortunately band line-ups, like set times, are subject to change, often time without notice.
-
I wasn't there on Monday, but last night's show was a joy from beginning to end. I really enjoyed Okkervil River. I wouldn't say they "blew me away," but I admired their energetic and emotive performance. The New Pornographers set started off a little shaky. The first song has some monster feedback and Neko's monitor wasn't working and the whole band and audience were distracted as a result. Fortunately, they got that worked out. It wasn't until they took a mini-break after playing the first six songs and Carl addressed and interacted with the audience for the first time that you could see the band relax and start enjoying themselves. From that point on, it was just magical. The set list was fantastic, hitting all the songs I wanted to hear. It seemed like we got an extra helping of Neko, too. She sang lead on a bunch more songs than I expected from seeing their last 3 or 4 tours. Anyway, their music just made me happy. I was smiling the whole time. Better than Prozac, I imagine. Great show. Only one encore, but I was satisfied with the selection of "Letter from an Occupant" to end the show on a high note.
-
Neko probably didn't break her ankle (she said she didn't, but AC insisted that she had), but she was definitely limping and when she limped back on stage for the encore, she half-jokingly said it was the most embarrassing night of her life.
We got more Neko songs at her request - Go Places was not on the set list, but she told AC she wanted to do it. Letter From an Occupant was last, also at Neko's request (and mine! :) it only took four shows and several years to get to hear that one) after the cover of ELO's Don't Bring Me Down. There was a lot of overlap from the night before - Challengers, Unguided, Adventures in Solitude, Mass Romantic, Use It, Twin Cinema, My Rights Versus Yours...but it was so much more awesome with Neko than it was without her.
-
Neko came out with crutches and a heavily wrapped ankle tonight, so if it's not broken, it's definitely damaged (and probably more than sprained).
-
I liked how she stayed on stage during the encore "break" because it would have been too much work to hobble off.
I go to new pornographers shows to see neko!

I'm with you onOkkervil. I don't always make it for the opener, but was glad I did this time. Saw the guitarist (who wore his guitar up about as high as his pecs!) at the bar as New Pornos started and told him I appreciated their set a lot.
I'm not in love with the New Pornos that way some folks are -- I mean, I have the albums, listen to them, enjoy them. They've never blown me away live, but it's an enjoyable show. I'm way psyched that I caught the Neko show...she was great, there's no question her voice is special (I was at the show where the cousin, who had a bad cold, filled in -- not good). Neko did NOT look like those photos even a little bit. :D Maybe it's cuz she'd been sick and was injured. Yeah, yeah, that's it.

He's actually not in Okkervil River, but just on this tour because their guitarist's wife recently had a baby. Charles Bissell from the Wrens was playing guitar.

Or because those photos are 10 years old. :)
Anyhow, Neko's now left the tour, so I guess Kathryn (niece, not cousin) will be filling in again. Hopefully she doesn't get sick.
