"...indie snob oneupmanship and bickering about ... well, everything ... "
"Plenty of people post nonsense on the board (almost exclusively, really)..."

Maybe they didn't seen Econo's alien holding a pot leave?
-
Which part is the disparaging part?
-
as if devotees of indie rock have a lock on snobbery and oneupmenship...
-
My experience as the de facto leader of HFStival.com allows me particular insight into this situation.
(1) Unless I am gravely mistaken, J-Money is an African-American girl, now in her early-to-mid 20's, who spent the better part of 10,000 posts on HFStival.com posting god-damn Taking Back Sunday lyrics back and forth with this other girl named Sarah. She was generally regarded one of the stupidest members in the history of a very, very stupid message board, and the fact the Washington Post is citing them as an authority is pretty LOL-worthy.
(2) Whenever a messageboard or news outlet steals a "story" from your messageboard, the proper response IS ALWAYS flooding them into oblivion. As such, I expect there to be some really nasty things posted in the comments section of the WPost's "story" when I get back. If you all need assistance coordinating such an attack, my PM box is always empty.
-
They gave the board full credit, so I wouldn't call it stealing.

Well, you have a point there, good sir, however they were real snots about it, so flood them anyway. On HFStival.com we learned every problem could be solved by flooding another messageboard, hacking someone's email, or deleting someone's account.
-
eh let them be snots... it's a classic case of pot meet kettle here... besides i'm will to bet the person posting that comment may be engaging in some of that indie rock snobbery here...
-
We'll find out this week.
And fuck the Post
AND THAT FUCKING NOOB

Shut up, DeathFromAbove. If we wanted to hear from the kiddie table, we would've put out pudding.
I swear, you are one more awful post away from me deleting your myspace page.
-
Maybe they want the web traffic and the comments and this whole "Bob Dylan" leak from the board was just the bait...
-
They called us loons.
Seems to me that Mr.s J. Freedom du Lac and/or David Malitz have been lurking around this forum for years. Seasoned forumites will understand. You've been outed boys! What are your screen names? Better yet, your member numbers?
Have a feeling that they are just a bit miffed that the 9:30 forum scooped them on the VFest. That's all. Music critics are always snobs. Goes with the territory. Just chalk it up to left handed promotions; as in, bad talk is better than no talk at all. Really, it didn't sound all that bad to me. Maybe it was just the tone that I read the piece in. Go with it. No attacks needed.

If you must relive your cyber attack experiences, go round up some old HFStival teenies and go to it. We've got bigger and better things on the 9:30 horizons. Trust me, what was written will all only work to everyone's advantage. Don't prove the negative comments right by resorting to 14 year old boy angst rebellion, even if it's all in good fun.
"...just saying" to quote another "loon" in high esteem.

You don't have to what? And what did you tell the HFStival kiddies?
If you're going to zing someone, your response should at least make sense as a response to what they've written.

Sorry, it didn't. My thoughts were drifting on other things at the moment. I've corrected my statement.

Originally posted by Jaguar:

No, madam, with all due respect, we are not. For all of the shortcomings HFStival.com had, it had a sense of community -- that people were there because of a common interest or hobby, and that community was protected. For all the mistakes myself or Brian may have made in running that forum, NEVER did we allow miscreants to come onto the board and destroy that sense of community. Never did we hold out the abstract idealism that people whose sole purpose for being on the board was to argue with others, put others down, and ruffle feather had some inalienable right to life, liberty, and posting on messageboard.
And so, despite all the things we may have done wrong over the years, the one thing I'll hang my hat on was when we were faced with our Dupek's or our Brian Wallace's we banned them. We did not allow one person to annoy everyone else and run off many decent members of our community. It didn't matter who they were, or how funny they might have been, we banned them. And because of that, that sense of community was allowed to thrive. Its noteworthy that many of those people -- who didn't know each other at all outside of the messageboard -- gathered together en masse probably 20 times during the existance of that board and continue to do so now.
So, for all the things 930.com does right, and all the good decisions the moderators on here make, it couldn't be more obvious to me that their greatest misgiving is that when there's a threat to this community, they're simply asleep at the wheel. We have had numerous regular members of this board leave this board, or take hiatuses, because of the stated reason of how gosh-darned obnoxious certain unredeeming posters are. The longer the Brian Wallace's and Dupek's are allowed to run free and clear and destroy the community, the less claim we have to trumpet ourself as a thriving community.
So, no, from where I sit this community is in no way better then that community. We/you/I may like the common interest this community is based around more then that one. Heck, I'm sure 98% of us think the HFStival was stupid, but don't play up how enlightened this community's decisions are. On HFStival.com, when we were faced with hatemongering, racism, people intentionally pushing other people's buttons, people using the board for streetteaming or commercial purposes, or people trying to tear down our sense of community or friendship, we acted to excise it. When we face that here, we give the person 55 chances to change. Who are supposed to be the adults again?

Sounds to me like the ramblings of a war mongering dictator.
So, by your standards, we should ban Julian, certified WEBLEBRITY. As a true lover of freedom and our Constitutional rights, I would vote against that measure. Kind of ironic, don't you think?
Btw, what in the world does that Washington Post article have to do with Dupek or Brian?
If you think this forum doesn't have a sense of community, than you are clearly mistaken or don't get out much.

Ugh. No wonder you're so in love with:
<img src="http://www.michaeltotten.com/archives/images/Hillary%20Clinton.jpg" alt=" - " />
You sanctimoniously blather on with little connection to reality just like she does. Did you ever get together with your HFS friends, (no...I think they really became part of your family didn't they, Jules?) tenderly hug on another (not in a "gay way") and sing "Kumbaya?"
You mean if I were ever on the HFStival message board I would have been tarred, feathered, stoned and thrown out as a bigoted, button-pushing racist? Such a shame. That sounds like a lot of fun. What color is the sky in your world, Jules?

I think some people just have their panties in a bunch because they're being called out as indie snobs. It's the interweb and the Washington Post...Take this one Gary Coleman:

well since they are listening and watching, i better start one upping myself by posting even more nonsense that miss p. doesn't like, and false rumours about what is perceived as "cool" by the masses that read print.
i think moby met jesus once in dc. he was there, so he can't deny it. he signed her shirt with a funny character, and she smiled about it the rest of the evening. hopefully by friday, he will have heard about this as he goes through the style section over morning tea.

And unless I'm gravely mistaken, I've never been to HFStival.com, and I've certainly never wasted key strokes in a discussion regarding Taking Back Sunday.

I am sure they would like to drum up some more traffic for their WaPo blog, so ignoring it might be better that flooding the comments. Just sayin'.

Wait...what am I missing here. A board of indie snobs have their knickers in a twist about being called 'indie snobs'
-
The only person on here that I could even consider an indie snob is snailhook but he also likes Steely Dan and shit like that. Again, this is by no means a harsh environment. I don't see why WaPo thinks so.

I know people who have never even heard of Wilco. To them, all of us are "indie snobs". Well, if they knew what indie was we would be.

I believe Snailhook to be genuinely wanting to enlighten the masses of things going on that you may find really good but not find in your run of the mill rag. I've noticed him trying harder than anybody in the area to bring more obscure acts our way. He should be commended and he certainly shouldn't be conscrued as snobbish. If you like what's spoon fed to you fine and dandy, but don't blame the man for trying to offer you a valid alternative.

I guess what I said about snailhook came across wrong. It wasn't a dig on snailhook at all. The guy brings all manner of music to the area and provides his own house as the venue.

I can only imagine that on any given sports forum that the all your going to find is bickering. Sure there are differing opinions, but if everyone had the same exact taste in music then the world would be an awful dull place.
and i really don't see the snobbery here as people seem to support a wide range of artists... snobbery would be a forum where we only discussed prog rock bands and looked down our noses at all those no talent punk or garage rock bands. sure we look down our noses at limp bizkit but thats only far isn't,
-
We support a wide range or artists as long as they are not jam bands, smooth jazz, mainstream country, mainstream metal, mainstream r&b, or Jack Johnson. You know, the genres of music 99% of Americans actually listen to.
To say that this board is not filled with indie snobs is laughable.

True - But at least we're likable snobs. :)
-
This board:
1. Is almost exclusively bands raved about on Pitchfork.
2. ...or NPR.
3. However, once they appear on the cover of "Spin" most board members would prefer that they "just remain friends."
4. Certain mainstream artists (B-52's, Cher) are raved about but a.) only ironically and b.) only if a female (like miss p) likes them first. That's the signal that it's ok for sweetcell to be enthusiastic about Barry Manilow.
5. But no mook bands.
Brian
-
Thing is, though, I think most of us are snobs about the main-est, mainstream indie. To a casual fan, of course we're snobs; to a certain sub-set, we're probably just following the lesser-followed herd.
Of course, that doesn't apply to vansmack, who openly admits his love of teen pop, or sweetcell, who, try as he might, admitted to wanted to see the Offspring in 2008 :D
-
yeah, sweetcell, consult me first before you mention such appaling, hair-raising statements...

and dude, that lil'tidbit is just the beginning. i'm among the people with the widest, most un-indie tastes here - not that i don't love me an ironic-t-shirt-wearing, pitchfork-approved band or three as well.
-
This board is comprised primarily of people who enjoy listening to, thinking about, and discussing the bands that that are, were, or will be booked at the 9:30 Club. Its not fookin rocket surgery.
-
whats the big deal we've "created" a safe haven to discuss the music we like... it's not like there aren't scads of other places for people to discuss that other 99% of the music out there...
true snobbish would exist if we sat around trashing American Idol for example
sure we could create lots of sub forums to meet the needs of every facet of mainstream music fans, then create more moderators, add super moderators, global moderators to handle the management of larger community. however, this would create ghettos...
personally, i prefer the 9:30 forum sandbox the way it is, but would be willing to know what people honestly think to make this place more inclusive.
one not so serious thought i had was the establishment of swear box so if one had to absolutely positively trash a "mainstream" band or artist, they could pony up for that pleasure.
-
Actually, a majority of the shows that play the 9:30 Club are not discussed at all on this board.
But the big indie shows that play the 9:30 certainly all are.

-
the thing is that the teenagers wanting to discuss Justin Timberlake aren't likely to be hanging out here anyways... for one thing there's no avatars or sig files where one can profess their dying devotion to him in...
-
Originally posted by 47 YEAR OLD VIRGIN:

JT was up for discussion. Were the JT fans chased off, or did they only arrive to self-servingly find out how to get tickets and profess there love for JT - then leave when that mission was accomplished??
-
JT was up for discussion and I clearly remember many regular members flaming the poor kids...
Who was it who left the comment
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AT THE 930...just one question, WHY?
Obviously this regular thought JT wasn't worthy of gracing the stage of the club = INDIE SNOB of the highest order.
*disclaimer* I don't care for JT, just using him as an example.
-
Was it the large caps that was offensive?
Why was JT at the 9:30 club in 2002? Had any other ex-NSYNCers been at the Club before? It was a fair question.
-
And it had an easy answer: "B/c he's going to be like an American Robbie Williams and you people don't know it yet."
-
How would this be any different from someone saying
SERGEI FEDOROV IS NOW A CAPITOL... just one question, WHY?
Maybe they were wondering why a normally arena level act would want to play a venue 1/25th the size of where they usually play
Bottom line if someone wants to label us a bunch of snobs because of our musical tastes thats fine, it's just name calling on the internet. IMHO it's one of the best music discussion forums on the internet as I usually find most band forums pretty tedious to read over any lengthy period of time.
-

Let me tell you, I know Robbie Williams, Robbie Williams is a friend of mine, and JT is no Robbie Williams!!
I guess JT wanted to play the 930 because he's a musical artist and 930 is a music venue....or am I missing something...We all know that the point of the comment was that the poster thought JT was too mainstream for an uber-cool club such as the 930, which equals indie snobbery in my book.
It's okay to be an indie snob, there's nothing wrong with it. And just like alcoholism, admitting your problem is the first step on the road to recovery.
-
a musical artist that has more fans than can fit in the 930 club. which was the point i am guessing
and one of those jt albums is pfork approved, i believe
-
I saw Robbie Williams at the 9:30 club.
And he was AWESOME!
Brian

JT is no Robbie Williams. I will not debate this. And I like JT. Recently I put both on my if "I had to have sex with a man who would it be" list...
I'm rather sure that no American artist is Robbie Williams.

What straight man does this? Why would you come up with a list like this? Is this before or after you played your ten daily hours of video games?
Seriously, if I do a billion things in my life, I'll never feel compelled to compile a "If I had to have sex with a man who would it be" list.
Did the missus put you up to this? I hope so.

Staight guys who are comfortable with their sexuality, mostly. It's the new "If I had a million dollars"...
It was after the band played a few sets, then headed down to the bar to meet up with the ladies.
And no, the missus didn't put me up to it, I think she arrived as I was halfway through my list. I did it mostly to see how many guys drinking with us would put me on their list.

I know a lot of people from this board -- in person -- who's only connection to me is this board. I'm not quite sure what the differences are that you're highlighting between HFStival.com and this board. My experience was the insanity of the back and forth flooding, started by HFS (as it was a new 'tactic' over here) for that week taht was..well, insane.
That said, after the battle, I started reading and posting over at HFStival. Didn't find it all that much more civil, but got some good info, and that's what I'm after!
I was glad you came over here, Julian, when you did.

I have never held back my devotion and love for the Foo Fighters on this board, and I've been hooked up with some sweet Pearl Jam info here.
No irony involved.

5. But no mook bands.

actually, it was the knee pads that gave him away. [/b]
Even with the knee pads I didn't make venerable's list, which, I'm not going to lie, hurt a little bit.
I made one other guys list and he was on mine so after an awkward silence, we agreed never to talk about it again.
And of course I had the white belt on. I'm either "suit up" or sporting the white belt.

I was looking for that earlier today. Thanks for finding it. Loved that thread. [/b]
I was gonna bring this up too. Best day of my life, all the Board members coming to our defense.
That never happened again. :)

Redsock totally had me write articles for him for a year and a half after that. I thought he was a pretty standup guy for giving me a chance, you know, considering my connection, but then he revealed about a year in that he had no idea who I was and probably wouldn't have "hired" me if he had. I thought that was kinda funny, but probably deserved.

Confirmed:

This entire thread, to me, is horribly entertaining, if not for the reason that the majority of my online life has been spent on BBs.
Yes, there are some incredible music snobs on here. I don't know most of the music that gets talked about on here. But I love it. Why? because it's stuff I'd either never heard of, or probably should have been listening to, and I finally got the chance to find out about it. I know my tastes are not what the majority of the board is, but I still like it here.
And WPost posting something about an online forum - come on guys, go chase some ducks around and call it news, it's more newsworthy than here. -.-
