Matador & Jay Reatard : This Is What We Like To Call A Press Release
April 24th, 2008 at 2:23 pm by The Management
Matador is pleased to announce the signing of a multi-album, worldwide, exclusive recording agreement with prolific Memphis people person Jay Reatard. The label was already engaged in a series of limited-edition 7″ releases, to be compiled on CD for fall release. The first 7″, ??See/Saw,? is already sold out; the second, ??Painted Shut,? is due out on May 20. Jay will be recording in August for a brand-new studio album out in early 2009. (His former label, In The Red, is releasing a compilation of early singles in June.)
You gotta love the dude's expression right before he gets clocked:

when did 2 days old news become old. That's news to me.
http://radio3.cbc.ca/ (http://radio3.cbc.ca/)
Not sure about Rock and Roll Hotel and him performing there. I think he's playing at another venue in town soon.
-
i think he hit him because of the sideways hat . . . and those horrible chops.
either way, it is viewing gold.
-
I just love the expressions on the faces of everyone else in that picture. I wish there was an "after" pic too.
-
jay reatard just really, really hates the hartford whalers. you can sorta hear him say, "FUCK MIKE LIUT!!!" right before he nails that kid.
-
Turn this into a roll call? I'm hoping to make it, but some work bigwigs are in town and I might get called away.
Still, I'm guessing I'm be out of the Black Cat by about 9? :D
-
Didn't this guy used to call himself "Andrew W.K."?

come on. . .he's wearing a whalers hat! of course, i suppose he could be wearing it ironically.
-
After watching the video, I'm guessing the kid didn't feel a thing...
Nice punch though.
-
Uh, greatest double bill EVER!

Andrew WK welcomes the kids on the stage with open arms. Just ask nkotb.
-
Will definitely be there.
-
Dude, totally. Aggressive behavior has NOTHING to do with punk at all. Why can't he be kind and respectful like our punk forefathers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4uahL_tQWc) ???

touche.
-
Best 28 minute live music set this year.
It was great to see Garth Algar (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6actJVy4gr4&feature=related) playing the drums for Jay.
-
Indeed twas most excellent.
-
really good but no one was into it it seemed and not a lot of people there
strange
-
GGW, i was saying the same thing to my friends...the drummer looked like a chubbier version of garth!
that was indeed a smoking set, the way real garage-punk should sound. jay reatard's amp is a thing of beauty. the crowd was fairly subdued, but this is dc so i don't expect people do go apeshit. i didn't think it'd be packed, either.
cheap time was decent, and the shirks are one of the best rock 'n' roll bands in this area.
-
I wasn't too into Cheap Time but did thoroughly enjoy the shirks.
-
cheap time was fine as an opener all in all jay killed it just such a weird crowd
def one of the better shows ive seen all year
-
These *ahem* rockstars are super tough punching out at fans when they have the likes of "THATGUY" protecting them should the fan fight back.
Did the faggot pack his guitar up and go home after that incident? Because it sure looks like it.
Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer would never have been such nancies, they wouldn't have missed a note....but that's when punk rockers were, well, punk rockers, not the wannabees of later years.

Okay - Who'd do her?
Count me out, and that's saying something because I would shag the crack of dawn if I could get up early enough.

you're a moron
reatard's whole complaint was that the club didn't provide any security to stop an over-sold (and apparently over-served) crowd from destroying his gear ... no one was going to "protect him should the fan fight back"
way to get the story straight before you spout off
-
good post above
ive been on tour and my gear cost a lot of money even if its cheap gear and even if you make 300 or 400 a night think of gas food and other shit that can go down on tour. breaking what could not only be equipment worth a lot of money but vintage stuff is even harder to replace. While he maybe should not have punched the kid, if you watched the video the bass player kicked a kid off the stage right before, and not a fun kick either....
-
Did anyone else think the threadstarter was calling Reatard a "pretty punk rock dude" (as in a punk rock dude that happens to be pretty) right before clicking on this thread?
-
i did.

Pot - kettle
Why add fuel to the fire by punching one of the overzealous fans, or kicking one off the stage if your concern is lack of security?
Not to smart huh? Mr. Drysdale....

while i'm obviously not inside his head, jay made it pretty clear that his concern about the lack of security was for his gear, not his person ... and at that point it seems as though his gear was already destroyed, so it didn't really matter much
and that doesn't change the fact that, as usual, you completely missed the point of this before you went off on some bizarre rant

BTW....when did I 'rant'?

Why does this guy call himself a reatard anyway? Isn't that a tad inappropriate?
-
It flows better than Jay Porky Midget.

No they don't...they just live for the 'now'. Well the real punks back in the 70's and early 80's did anyway.
-
dude, you realize the sex pistols were the 1970s UK version of a boy band, right? i mean, maybe they spat at people and did drugs, but they were the creation of a guy who sold overpriced bondage gear and named the band basically as an advertisement for his store. they made a great album and left their footprint on the music world and it's better for that, but to hold them up as some bastion of punk holiness is just laughable. they were just a bunch of blokes who took good advantage of opportunities, for about a year or so.

man, you're fucking clueless. way to break down an ambiguous and complex term into the most predictable cliche. you think wire and gang of four and the pop group had that attitude? robert quine of the voidoids or paul strummer would've booted some bitchass off the stage for stomping on their gear.
besides, who's calling jay reatard punk anyway? even sloppy garage-rock musicians need their space to do their thing.
-
The person who started the thread called him punk rock.
