The Barns is sold out for Alejandro (I think) - I will be there Thurs - I highly, highly recommend seeing him Fri if you can do it - the guy is phenomenal live and given what he's been through over the past two years the fact that we can even see him live is something we should all treasure

-triple recommend Alejandro. F*** Alejandro is sold out. I really wanted to go to this....Wolftrap doesn't strike me as a venue that has people outside selling tickets...
-(the following is not b/c I'm a follower, just spreading the word to those who like Pat McGee/Carbon Leaf/DMB) Kenin @ Iota Friday
-Tracy Grammer at Jammin Java followed by a late show with the lovely, entertaining and great Anthony Fiacco at Jammin Java this Saturday 9:30 PM (Rhett he has good hair!)
-Charlie Post at Iota on Monday (again not a follower, but he's toured w/ some of "my" bands)

You might give it a try if you really want to go...while it is illegal to resell tickets on National Park Property, people do it...i spent several summers as a wolftrap employee chasing away people trying to resell tickets...tho i don't know quite how it works at the barns...also, tickets sometimes do become available close to show time

Well you don't do Baltimore shows, and you typically don't mention country shows...but BR549 at the Funk Box on Saturday will be good...

...though the show is in jeopardy, as Donnie from BR549 has been hired to be part of Bob Dylan's tour starting Monday.

Thanks MaLo...I might call Wolftrap or keep checking the site for updates. Not sure I can make the Annapolis show.

have we noticed that Hoya's "weekend?" post has slowly crept from Fri up to TUESDAY?

Chimbly, I thought this thing on pitchfork was amusing ... I really like the decemberists, but this is pretty dead on:

 --------------------------------------------
Jeremy Baron's Worst Songs On Otherwise Great Albums 2003
"Every rose has its thorn" - Poison and/or Jeremy Baron

Perfection is something no one should desire to achieve; Shinto monks were so afraid of perfection that upon building one of the scores of temples that dot the Japanese landscape, they would make a point of it to leave one stone out of place. Why? Because after reaching perfection, nothing else can attain the same level. It's all downhill from there.

We'll never see someone construct a perfect anything, and albums are no exception. For every Kid A, there's a "National Anthem"; for every Yankee Hotel Foxtrot there's a "Reservations." Sometimes, an album that otherwise strikes you as gorgeous contains that one fucking song that's so tragic it almost ruins the whole experience. And this year's classics are no exception. Here they are, from nine to one (because if I did a list of ten... oh, never mind). - Jeremy C. Baron

06 The Decemberists, "The Chimbley Sweet" (Her Majesty the Decemberists): Christ, these guys are such fucking geeks. I'm sorry, but someone had to say it. Sure, they make good music, and their Elizabethan/Victorian themes make for some pretty intriguing lyrics. But sometimes, through dweeby lyrics and simply ludicrous composition, Colin Meloy and crew give us a look at their high school selves-- the kids who would get their tighty whiteys hoisted on the flagpole while their heads got shoved into toilets. Spelling "chimney" and "sweep" incorrectly isn't endearing-- it makes me want to give 'em all a good slap. The music doesn't help: awkward electric guitar lines and high-pitched vocals stand out amongst the overall lameness of this song. Decemberists, it's wedgie time.

I'm quite dismayed that I'm missing all three of these shows:

The High Strung, Capitol Years, BC (Thurs, 3/3)

 Secret Machines, 930 (Fri, 3/4)

Ambulance Ltd, VHS or Beta, Black Cat (Sat, 3/5)

PS -- is anyone going to Centro-matic at DC9 tonight??  If they're third in the lineup, any idea when they might go on??

Also, DJ Indiesoc at Cafe Saint Ex tonight.  Great flyer.....

But will it be late?  Didn't DC9 originally intend to have shows early so the DJ could rule?

I've never been to DC9, but their website says all shows start at 9, and there are three bands...that's what I'm going on, unless i read differently...

Bless DC9 -- they actually answered my email in less than an hour (something Black Cat has never achieved; I've gotten start times from them mid-show!).

Centro-matic goes on at 11:00.  As I live super close, I'm there...

Its just another case of Pitchfork being wrong on multiple levels. I really do not understand how you can single that song out. Its not incongrous on the album at all.

i generally agree ... but i usually read their stuff more for the writing than for the "ideas" ... i love snarky criticism, and they've got a good formula going

First, "Chimbley" is a real word.  Moreover, it's a Victorian word and, thus, fits perfectly with the theme of the album.  Pitchfork should try not to flaunt their etymological and literary ignorance.  They should read a little more Dickens.

Second, the name of the song is Chimbley "Sweep" not "Sweet."  Both the band's website (http://www.decemberists.com/discography.html) and the label's website (http://www.buyolympia.com/killrockstars/sid=518148086/Item=KRS375) list the song as "Chimbley Sweep."  I'm not sure where Pitchfork got "Sweet" from.

Labeling the band "geeky" may very well be accurate, but Pitchfork should remember that the first rule of being snarky is getting your facts right.

GGW,

And for what it is worth chimbley is not in Dictionary.com or several other online dictionaries, although it is probably how my dad would try to say and spell it.

i'd suggest thomas hardy instead of dickens, but that's just my cup of tea.

the decemberists rule, i can't wait for the new album / 930 show ... has anyone sold their copy of colin meloy sings morissey for $3,000 yet?

only issue is that I can't seem to find out how to put an umlaut over the "n" in Spinal Tap ... any ideas?

 FRIDAY
The Secret Machines â?? at 930 Club â?? have been turning heads with an intoxicating concoction of old-school psychedelic jams and hooky indie rock, replete with a uniquely stark light show. Hopefully youâ??ll be treated to their gorgeous shoegazey cover of Dylanâ??s â??Girl from the North Country.â?ť

Clem Snide â?? at Black Cat â?? defies stock alt-country conventions to create a timeless and diverse sound that highlights frontman Eef Barzelayâ??s remarkable singing and songwriting talents. Archer Prewitt (formerly of post-rock supergroup The Sea and Cake) opens.

The cozy Ramâ??s Head Tavern in Annapolis is the perfect spot to catch Austin roots rocker Alejandro Escovedo. Known for his mesmerizing live performances, Escovedo informs his excellent Americana-drenched tunes with his rebellious cowpunk background.

Soulfly â?? at Jaxx, in Springfield â?? features ex-Sepultura frontman and heavy metal luminary Max Cavalera. Openers Death by Stereo veer more towards thrashy metal than their poppier So-Cal skatepunk brethren. Attendees should go ahead and schedule an appointment with their ear doctor for Monday morning.

 SATURDAY
After innumerable opening gigs for hotly tipped indie bands, Ambulance Ltd. finally have the spotlight to themselves. Headlining at Black Cat, the impeccably coiffed NYC quartet play dreamy pop, but arenâ??t afraid to wander into grittier territory. Openers include VHS or Beta and Robbers on High Street.

A wizened sage of underground rock and lo-fi pioneer, Lou Barlow brings his decades of experience in legendary bands like Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and The Folk Implosion, to Iota. Acclaimed local songwriter Karl Straub opens.

Notorious rabble-rouser George Carlin peels himself away from his dusty Atlantic City and Vegas haunts to perform his stand-up at the stately Warner Theatre. While Carlinâ??s incendiary views on religion, politics, and American society havenâ??t mellowed with age, his sharp tongue has grown a bit tired in recent years.

Sure, youâ??ll have to scrounge for a ticket to this sold out show at 930 Club and struggle through insipid nu-metal imitators like Chevelle, but post-hardcore innovators Helmet are well worth your wait. Reunited after a six year hiatus, Helmetâ??s â??Meantimeâ?ť remains one of the best hard rock albums of the 90s.

 SUNDAY
As mock-rocker David St. Hubbins of Spinal Tap declared, â??Itâ??s like a pair of eyes. Youâ??re looking at the umlaut, and itâ??s looking at you.â?ť Thatâ??s right, German punctuation trailblazers Mötley CrĂĽe are back at MCI Center. Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, Vince Neil and the gang use a little less hairspray now, but their misogynist pop-metal hits still rock.

Head to the Black Cat backstage say a proper farewell to indie popsters The Small Shouts, playing their final show. Donâ??t worry, you can catch tireless Small Shoutâ??s member Olivia Mancini perform with the Washington Social Club nearly every weekend at a club near you.

I think the band is pretty decent, but his voice is the epitome of the whiny Jew. Hell, I'm sad to say that even Bigyawn agrees with me on that one.
