Was there a thread on this yet?
First show is June 15
http://www.fortreno.com/ (http://www.fortreno.com/)
-
Sweet - I love TBA.
-
My sister had a boyfriend in high school with a band called TBA (for real)...they had a song called "Fake ID" that was a real knee-slapper....at least it was to a 14 year-old.
-
Here's what we know so far:
Opening night is June 15: Gist, Diacritical, TBA
June 19: Metropolitan, Fivefour
June 26: Sentai
June 29: Citygoats
July 27: The Aquarium, Hott Beat
August 3: Georgie James, The Hard Tomorrows, The Fake Accents
August 17: Garland of Hours
-
i already posted in the Just Announced thread, but obviously no one looked there. :)
at any rate, YAY!!! i must miss the first show because of Sonic Youth, but i plan on being there for most of the rest. Fort Reno is the best thing about summer.

I have been out of the DC music scene for some time. If I can only make it to one show, which one should I choose?
-
what about the annual fugazi, dplan,q+notu shows? or did i mean evens.

I'd say the Georgie James/Hard Tomorrows one.

yup.
Anarchist, Evens will probably for sure most definitely play - that should be a given. Q and Not U is obviously not together anymore, and thus cannot play this year. Travis Morrison is a toss up, because he's already doing a black cat show over the summer and is playing in New York and some other places, so...who knows. hopefully that will happen. others i'm assuming/hoping will have shows are *Edie Sedgwick* (who i have yet to see...), Antelope, Monopoli, and tons of others. i really want to see Exit Clov up there one of these days, too.

can i get back to you once the full schedule is up? from that list alone, i'd go with Metropolitan or Georgie James. but, wait. they'll have tons of other good acts. and if Evens do schedule, and you can only pick one, see them. they are awesome.

i've seen ft. reno criticized in past years as only putting on local bands who conform to the dischord sound and scene, while leaving out the more poppy side of the indie spectrum ... what do ya'll think about that? any validity?

a little bit...yes...BUT
they've already scheduled Georgie James, haven't they? so hopefully we've got a few more fun, poppy little bands to look forward to.
i don't mind the whole Dischord thing one bit, but it would be nice to see some more variation up there.

I've heard that too. . of course we don't all know who sends in demos every year (I'm sure a ton) but I do know that WSC (poppy indie to the max) has always been turned down, even though they are arguably one of the better known D.C. bands.
-
WSC has always been turned down
Wow that sucks... but maybe the mosquitos prefer the Dischord sound; lets remember that they're in the majority.
My favorite band last year was "The Rude Staircase"; a crazy and fun set!
-
Don??t hold your breath waiting for Exit Clov Betty, it won??t happen. I imagine they fall into the same crowd as WSC. Ft. Reno is very disappointing in some ways, and no, not just because my girlfriend??s band never gets to play it. The series is really a microcosm of what is wrong ?? and a little right ?? about the DC scene.
It is without a doubt, an old-boys network. Partially because of who books the series, Amanda Mackaye (I??m assuming she is still doing it, though others have done it in the past), and the fact that she obviously has a huge connection to the ??Dischord? crowd. The same bands are on the series year after year, and while that is all fine and good, some additional variety would be nice. I tried to look up the last few year??s schedules on archive, org, and while last year wasn??t there, many of the bands are repeats (Gist, Sentai, Citygoats, Metropolitan, Hard Tomorrows). Good bands the lot of them, but every year?
In some ways I guess it is nice to have an homage to the ??old-school? DisChord heyday, especially since the Ft. Reno series really came from all that. But completely shutting out a number of bands who are very much a part of the DC scene right now seems alienating and unproductive, and builds frustration and friction among bands who aren??t allowed in. I could go on, as I really find the musical dynamic in this city fascinating. But my point here was merely to call out the fact I think the Ft. Reno series is flawed, but since the people putting it together reside in a self-created bubble, nothing about it is likely to change.
-
Just so we're clear, I do still like it though, I just wish there were more variety.
-
I totally appreciate the Fort Reno organizer(s) for volunteering their time to bring free live music, whatever it is. I've discovered some good bands by going there in the past and probably will again this year
-
good points redsock - I wouldn't mind seeing the Clov or Cedars outside on a sunny evening

totally and completelly 400% agree with you. i love fort reno, but yeah, it would be nice to see a bit more variation there. the fact that bands like WSC and Exit Clov are getting shut out is just absurd. i'm pretty sure that Amanda Mackaye still does booking.
-
And now that you've pointed it out, redsock, it should be on DCist by the end of the day and then it will surely make it's way back to the organizers.

Couldn't have said it better Redsox..we didn't even bother applying this year for the same reasons...a shame really cos there are a bunch of bands who'd luv to play it..specially since its pretty hard for local bands to target the under 21 crowd unless you are lucky enough to play the BC/9:30 3 to 4 times a year..
-
can't we do anything about it? lots of TBAs still on the sched?
as smackie said, maybe DCist will 'borrow' this and make it one of their burning issues

Wait, was that sarcasm? I thought DCist only pays attention to us for concert announcments.

Yep. And I know she definitely works at all the shows.
Who on here is a DCist spy?
-
Nothing against DCist or the Fort Reno organizers, but those two subsets of Washingtonians seem very socially distinct. I mean, is DCist going to invite Mark Andersen to one of their wine tasting soirees?
-
ft reno has been going for almost 40 yrs. when did the discord crowd take over?
-
Another one not on the list above from Dischord's website:
July 6th - Antelope, French Toast
I'm all for complaining in most cases but Fort Reno is free and the volunteer organizers put a lot of work into it.
Also an important point, some of these bands that are being mentioned as being shut out might have bigger heads than you think and may demand specific nights, openers, etc that just can't be accomidated.
And if it gets to the point where bands are giving up and not even submitting, how do you hope to change the situation?
I'm not saying this is the be all, end all, Ft. Reno is perfect, argument, but I wish people would appreciate it a little more for what it is.
So, to quote those awful old radio commercials: "Not a sermon, Just a Thought"
-
I appreciate these folks putting on these shows for free, volunteering their time etc, but the selection process is a classic example of the Good Ol' Boys network in action. The pallete of bands hasn't changed in years and years. The band names have changed, but not the DNA.
And to suggest that bands aren't getting chosen because they are too demanding is hilarious.
Fico, you never should have put that ounce of cocaine in your rider! I think maybe it cost you the gig, dude.

Without a doubt the Ft. Reno folks do a lot to bring us great music for free all summer, and I am not trying to take anything away from that. My comments weren't meant to shrug off their hard work. And it also wouldn't surprise me if a band like WSC has issues with who they play with etc. But I know bands like the Clov and Cedars (and many others) would be excited just to get on any bill.
Look, I'm sure the organizers get a million applications, and do not have the time to respond to each one and say "sorry, didn't work out this year, please try again next year though." Believe me, I get that. But how does a band like Cedars know if they will ever be considered or if Amanda (or whomever) just throws it out? Not making it after 2 or 3 years, especially with all the slots available, understandeably can frustrate a band to the point that they just give up. I honestly wonder how many bands that play Ft. Reno actually submit anything in the first place.

If by suck you mean the same way as your mom during her solo scene in "Gummin' Grannies X: the X is for Xtra Cum," no, they don't suck like that.
Of course, the Ft. Reno folks might not like their music much. If that's your point you might be right.

I worked a ton of Ft. Reno shows over the years, and they had a wide variety of stuff. Remember the Velocity Girl days? That was a very not discord period.
And Gwar did a show there? Well Rawg the all Gwar cover band.
I know one thing they try to do is have bands of kids in the neighborhood play. After working with those kids many times, you appriciate any band with an idea of how to play live.

I have to give props to Ft. Reno for at least trying to be a little different. Head Roc is a great selection (is this really his first time?), and including Shwa and Paul Michel -- though neither am I really a fan of -- at least shows a step in the right direction.
Can't be critical all the time now can we.

btw, new Cedars record is sounding great so far...the leak shall come shortly after July 17th...

Metropolitan tonight ... woohoo
-
yeah, who else is coming tonight?
we've decided to have a massive picnic just for the hell of it/my friend's birthday tomorrow, so find me...cake will be present :)
-
what are tonight's bands like?
-
metropolitan (http://www.myspace.com/metropolitan) sound like sonic youth or pavement
five four (http://www.myspace.com/fivefour) is all-girl indiepop
shwa (http://www.myspace.com/shwamusic) is "edgy melodic rock"
-
they cancelled tonight's metropolitan show -- shucks
-
bummer. looks like it'll end up being a pretty nice evening after all. hope they can fill in one of those TBAs as a make-up for this show.
-
ok, it was a well-deserved cancellation. my future is clearly not in meteorology.
-
well the Greenland show on thursday has a TBA and wouldn't it be lovely if they added Metropolitan to that schedule...but who knows...after all, i am not Amanda Mackaye :)
i am bummed, though. our picnic is being moved to a fucking Barnes & Noble.
-
Cool...the Evens are playing on my birthday!
-
so...Greenland tonight...woo!
who is coming?

Just not the same without you know....

That is one that I caught early. Saw their second show before their name change and singer change. A very different band then.

thursday, august 31
shellac

-
no way
-
The Shellac show is confirmed on the Touch and Go website.
-
so with all the shitty weather we've been having lately, how many of these shows actually went on as planned?
-
I think two have been cancelled and at one the last band got rained out.
-
yuup she's right...and by the way monday's show was AWESOME
-
indeed
-
Has anyone been there for all the threatening announcements and the constant police presence for the past couple of shows? Last night a cop was riding around the lawn on his motorcycle incessantly.
If a couple moron kids screw Fort Reno up, I'm going to freak.

So what's the story?

at the brandon butler show there were some underage kids that were drinking and letting off fireworks. the cops were called. this could be the reason but im not sure..

Same here. I've been looking forward to the Evens, Mary Timony and Shellac all summer.
-
Yeah, I haven't been yet either. But really looking forward to the Evens. Maybe Mary Timony as well - depends, as I've seen her (solo and with Helium) about a million times. Who's this Shellac everyone's raving about?
-
There's always been an occasional cop around whenever I've been there for shows. I thought that was pretty much the norm.
-
between amanda's talk before head-roc and the first 10 minutes of head-roc's set, that was the most i've been lectured to since college.

yeah, i'm not complaining, just made me feel old. those kids don't know what they could be ruining. can't they at least get stoned BEFORE they come to the park? idiots.
-
well someone like, attempted to torch the porta potty a few weeks ago or something...or at least that's what appeared to be happening. what happened last night? i don't understand how it's difficult to just sit on the grass without any firearms for a couple of hours. whoever is being silly these days obviously hasn't learned to pre-game.
-
Some kid wrote an IM to his friend saying "Let's go smoke pot at Fort Reno tomorrow." The kid must be a moron, because his mom found it and called the police, who then called Ft. Reno people. Now, apparently, the police feel like they need to be more of a presence at the shows, and Ft Reno has to pay them to be there (I think 250 dollars a show) or risk losing the permit. They said if that goes on too long, the season will risk being cut short, simply because the funds aren't available.
It just pisses me off to no end. If you need to blaze that badly, just smoke up before the show.
-
yeah tell me about it...that is absolutely ridiculous.
-
Bunch of savages in this town.
-
I hope everyone here donates money to Fort Reno. At least buy a t-shirt or give them a few bucks next time you're at a show.
-
wait, the kid's mom just flat-out called the cops? instead of just confronting her kid?? wtf?! whose parents do that?!
-

I know! So messed up. I'm assuming there had been previous problems with that kind of thing, hence her freaking out. . but still, messed up.
-
Help the fort reno folks out by looking around. If you see kids sparking up or drinking, tell them to knock it the fuck off. that goes for the over 21s too.
seriously. what is the matter with you that you can't go without a drink for less than two hours.
-
Yes beat them up, because violence is the only solution to keep the show's free! It's TOTALLY worth it.
-
Shellac is Steve Albini's current band that has been sort of on again-off again over the last 15 or so years. They almost never play in DC.
Albini played with Big Black and Rapeman and has produced lots of music (Nirvana, Pixies and Mogwai come to mind, but he did lots of other stuff too).
Shellac's sound is abrasive, raw, hollow. Give 'At Action Park' a listen.

Thanks for the info, matts. I'll check it out.

I say, instead of driving over to Fort Reno and wasting gas, those 2nd District cops should just stay at their usual battle station: the Exxon Tiger Mart four blocks down Nebraska, and wait for the potheads to come in with the munchies
