Title: BigYawn.net
Post by: redsock on January 05, 2004, 11:23:00 am
Ok, so there's this website I've sorta created, with some help from a bunch of folks, including some other 9:30 board members. Some you will recognize immediatly, other's you won't. Anyway, the gist, my idea, is for this site to work as a linch-pin for a community of folks in DC, who simply love good music. Whether you're a local musician, or just one of us, a devoted fan, the site should appeal to some part of you.

Not that I want to take away anything away from the board, but this is a bit different as you'll see. So go check it out, I'm curious to hear what you all will think about it (and nervous at the same time). And if you like it, and want to contribute something, let me know.

PS- lots of time and effort went into this, so be gentle, ok?

Great site.

Markie starts everyone of his columns/reviews with the word "Well".

Good site, thanks for the head's up on Phantom Planet. One suggestion: Before posting, review the site's content for spelling errors.

Ditto on Phantom news...I'm super swamped today at work, so only took a *quick* look, but look forward to visiting over there again.

 Good luck!!

Yeah, that's why I try not to be proofing text at 4 in the morning. Very unprofessional. But thanks for the slap, I needed to wake up.

Dumb question...(does mankie ask any other kind of question I hear whisered in the back row?)

Why BigYawn? Doesn't that present somewhat negative connotations, like it's boring or something...which it isn't. I had a quick visit and agreed with the B&S review by the way.

Nice site; I'll be checking back.  Anybody know why Jason S. left PP?

ummm...there is a simple and complicated explanation. The latter is that it is often a lack of oxygen that causes people to yawn. I.E., they need more oxygen. The analogy is that we need more good music. The former is that I yawn a lot.

Clever!

Why do we yawn we see other people yawn?

There is a study that says we do that because we care about them. If someone we don't care about yawns, we don't yawn. Wish I could find where I read this.

Good stuff - I bookmarked it.

It's going to take a lot of work to keep it up-to-date though.

What's the CD rating system? Obviously Z's, but what's the rank? 1-10? 10 being good? (Nevermind - I found the BY-RATING page...)

 ***************

Defintely give it another quick proof though
i.e., on the By Rating page:
Title for Death Cab is wrong
Ryan Adams RnR part 2 is listed twice

Site looks great!  One suggestion though...you might want to think about sizing the site for an 800x600 screen size.  Tons of people (at least 50% i'd say) use this resolution, especially us older gents who don't see quite like we did when we were 16!

With my screen res set to 800x600 i have to use the scroll bars at the bottom to see the right margin of the page.

Hope this was gentle enough...and congrats!

I'm not sure I agree with that theory because I remember when we were kids in school we would always do the old, "I bet I can make you yawn" trick...and it always worked regardless of who it was.

Okay, enough of the yawning because I didn't intend to hijack the thread, I do have a habit of asking random questions though that end up taking over.

Estimated at about 42%, but there is no exact number really - trends are discussed here -  http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNews/stat_trends.htm (http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNews/stat_trends.htm)

Not a bad guess then, i'd say.

i was thinking about the yawning thing, and i came up with

If you are in a room, and your brain is not getting enough oxygen, could it be that there isnt as much oxygen in the room? Not like the moon or something, but a small enough amount less, to make you yawn.  Therefore, other people in the same room, hence, breating the same oxygen deficient air, would need to yawn as well.

Can you make people yawn over the phone?  i guess that would blow my theory. haha.

Evidently you can..if a deaf person hears someone else yawn, it triggers a yawn in themselves.

Having just wasted 15 minutes surfing the web to see what I could find...nobody really knows why we yawn in sympathy, even though clinical tests have proven it happens. The only educated stab at a reason was that it comes from our days as apes, because studies on apes shows that the leader of the group  yawns to signal he is ready to do something different (if they are resting and he decides it's time to search for food for example) and the rest of the group yawns to acknowledge his command.

Well, (Thanks Thirsty, Bastard) People yawn as an indicator that they are relaxed and that there is "no danger". That it why peopled who are relaxed feel subconciously compelled to return the yawn.

I think that you should definitely let flawd write a weekly column.  Tap into that angry disenfranchised high-schooler audience.  You gotta establish brand awareness when they're young.  Just like the tobacco companies.

And Mankie should write a weekly footie column.  Or maybe  "Car Talk with the Mankster."
