I heard that version for the first time a few weeks ago -- it is excellent. Percy's Song has always been one of my favorite Dylan tunes.

fairport's version of "percy's song" is one of my most listened to songs. i have a few different copies on vinyl and they're all wearing out. easily one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking songs recorded...sandy denny and richard thompson's vocals, with the dulcimer and guitar playing, and the excellent drumming...just total perfection.
-
Visions Of Johanna -- Lee Ranaldo (1991)
Tonight Iâ??ll Be Staying Here With You -- The Charlatans (2002)
If You Gotta Go, Go Now -- Cowboy Junkies (1992)
I Threw It All Away -- Yo La Tengo (1989)
-
the replacements - "like a rolling pin"
the secret machines do a fantastic shoegazey live cover of "girl from the north country", i'm not sure if it's on an album
-
Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming. So far I've chosen for the comp (which is now looking to be multi-disc):
Them- It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
Bill Frisell- Just Like a Woman
PJ Harvey- Highway 61 Revisited
Roy Buchanan- Sign on the Window
Cat Power- Paths of Victory
The Byrds- My Back Pages
The Ramones- My Back Pages
The Neville Brothers- With God on Our Side
William Shatner- Mr. Tambourine Man (!)
Waylon Jennings- Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
The Pogues- When the Ship Comes In
The Secret Machines- Girl From the North Country
Frank Black- Changing of the Guards
The Stooges- Ballad of Hollis Brown
Nina Simone- Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
White Stripes- One More Cup of Coffee
Neko Case- Buckets of Rain
Mel Gibson- Make You Feel My Love (!)

the 13th floor elevators version of "it's all over now, baby blue" is just devastatingly awesome. don't even bother making the comp if you don't put that on there, seriously. "i shall be released" by marion williams has always been a favorite. i think it was used in a recent nike/lebron ad campaign, actually. and while the nico version of "i'll keep it with mine" is excellent, i prefer the version by rainy day, that one-off paisley underground band from the '80s featuring susanna hoffs and others. their version of "i'll keep it with mine" is really, really gorgeous.
-
david bazan - the man in me
-
"You Ain't Going Nowhere" and "Nothing Was Delivered" bookending The Byrd's Sweethearts of the Rodeo
-

great call, booker! i knew i was forgetting a killer version of that song. fairport's is also gorgeous. that rainy day album is a sleeper, no one ever drops the science on that one.
one could make a great comp of dylan covers using just the band and the byrds and fairport.

+ 1,000,000,000.
It leaves Dylan's in the dust. One of the best break-ups songs ever.

the poster children's cover of 'Isis' was a staple on my college radio show in the early 90's.
-
The Crust Brothers "Marguee Mark" is great if you can find it. It's a live album of Stephen Malkmus and Silkworm playing a bunch of Basement Tapes songs. Also has a great version of "Tuesday's Gone" for when you get around to your Skynyrd comp.
-
16 Horsepower - Nobody 'Cept You
-
I third the Ness version (shocker), second the Cowboy Junkies tune and would add Edie Brickell's version of "A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall" from the Born on the 4th of July Soundtrack.

The LIVE version they used to play during the Appetite-era WAS really great (Check out the version from 1987 at the Marquee in London. It's a B-side of the "Yesterdays" CD-single.)
The version they put on "Use Your Illusion II" wasn't. Then to make matters worse, on the Illusions tour, Axl would yell out, about midway through: "Give me some reggae!" and it got even worse. Check out their performance at the Freddie Mercury tribute gig for an example.

Looking up that song on itunes gave me both the ministry and the isaac hayes versions, both of which are going to be included. they're sick.
