Title: 'tis the season
Post by: 6949 on November 26, 2007, 02:28:00 pm
Favorite holiday songs/albums?

All I want for Christmas is Us (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h40a3nAnEs&feature=related) by Jason Mraz and Tristan Prettyman. That youtube video is the best I could find. I first heard the song at their 930 club show years ago.

Let's Be Naughty (http://www.myspace.com/elliottyamin)  by Elliott Yamin

I've actually found that album hit or miss - though for the most part I like it.  When it's a good Christmas song, it's great, but when it's bad, it's really bad and I have to skip the track.  He can probably make 1 great christmas mix CD though, maybe two.

I can't believe I agree with vansmack about ANYTHING but I agree on those two.  Pass, on No Doubt's version of "Oi", though.  It hurts my head.  If you watch the video though, you can pinpoint the exact moment when the horn players sort of got kicked out of the band.  Before, "Oi" they were a SoCal Madness.  Afterwards, they're three white guys and Gwen.

 "Father Christmas" by The Kinks

 "Mistress For Christmas" by AC/DC

And not a Christmas song, per se, but Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews really do the greatest version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" ever.

  It's Welsh-tastic! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4klyIX4RIWA&feature=related)

 Brian

P.S.  Isn't it about time for a Winehouse/Doherty remake of "Fairytale?"

The only Christmas music, other than hymns sung in church, that I can listen to is The Vince Guaraldi Trio.  The other stuff just gets too hokey.

The Louis Armstrong/Vilma Middleton version is the best, and  this remix (http://www.mediafire.com/?4d7x4x0t2q5) off one of my favorite Xmas albums of all time is incredible as well:

I don't celebrate Christmas, but Last Christmas by Wham.

If I even THINK about the song it gets stuck in my head. "Last Christmas/ I gave you my heart/ then the very next day/ you gave it away/ this year/ to save me from tears..."

 URGH!!!

Nonsense!  Can I remind you it's TOM JONES!!!!

 and CERYS MATTHEWS!!!

I don't care if it's remixed or not.  That version's nostalgic, old-farty and both of the people singing are dead.  You gotta sex that song up!  Robbie Williams style!

 Brian

P.S.  Is Louis Armstrong dying in that song?  Jesus!  Kevin Dubrow probably was in finer voice this weekend!

Are you a female without a significant other at Xmas time?

Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just saying, those are three pretty downer Xmas songs and the ultimate I'm alone at Xmas with a near happy ending song.

I think the only pop christmas song I've ever liked has been "Oi to the World" and I'm fairly indifferent to versions by The Vandals and No Doubt.

Other than that, give me the old fashioned stuff any day over this "Last Christmas" and "Santa Baby" crap.

the aforementioned A Fairytale of New York

I might actually tolerate most christmas music this season since my boss had a total meltdown and tearily rescinded her constant christmas decleration...

From now through Christmas, we're pleased to offer up the WOXY HOLIDAY MIXER! This unique 24/7 collection of seasonal tunes is filled with vintage renditions of your holiday favorites by modern rockers from around the globe. We have a little bit of something for everyone with new music this year from the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Aimee Mann, Over The Rhine, and The Teenage Prayers. If you stick around long enough, you'll probably hear some irreverent selections from "A John Waters Christmas" and Spinal Tap but we've balanced them out with some classic tracks from Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and James Brown among others. To round things out a little more, we've also included some tunes about winter, snow falling, and the month of December because we know you can only hear "Jingle Bells" so many times...

I have nothing against the Pogues, but I prefer the Stars' version of "Fairytale of New York".

I'll second Joni Mitchell's "River". My all-time favorite Christmastime song.

Another great (and very underrated) Christmas song is a Timbuk 3 song called "All I Want for Christmas Is World Peace" that was initially released on an IRS Records Christmas compilation. Jackson Browne and Bruce Cockburn did a great cover of it in a live performance that showed up on BitTorrent a couple years ago under a compilation torrent named "Santa's Boots."

There are some songs that are sacred and should never be covered....Fairy Tale Of New York is one of those songs.

I most look forward to hearing . . .

 John Lennon - Happy Xmas
Keith Richards - Run Run Rudolph

And I like Mariah Carey's video for All I Want For Christmas Is You.

Spent last christmas (i gave you my heart) eve at the Hard Rock in Vegas with my bretheren left-handed jews (I think we made up 80% of the casino - other than the absolutely miserable staff who all wanted to be home) and they played the same 10 or so songs on continuous loop (Wham, Elton, McCartney, Mellencamp, Lennon, Richards, Jovi, Waitresses, Run-DMC, a few others) which I heard for like 15 hours of the day.  That was like a wicked psychological test . . . that I failed.

A fantastic song.  One of the greatest.  But unfathomably rueful and depressing like "Don't Go Back to Rockville" or "Everyday Is Like Sunday." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NmdFgFyhnk)

"Just for a moment, I was back at school.
And felt that old familiar pain."

It always makes Mr. Wallace go a big weepy.

I have been challenged to find a worse Christmas Video - it's hard to compete when Midgets show up at the 2:30 mark - simply over the top.
