Title: Plain White T's "Hey There, Delilah"
Post by: Brian_Wallace on July 31, 2007, 09:34:00 am
Am I the only one (who isn't sick of it by now) who thinks this is really great song?  Really simple but the best ones are.

It's like the great Ryan Adams crossover single everyone's waiting for.  Maybe it's a heart-on the-sleeve guy thing.  "I'd walk to you if I had no other way."

Plus, I'm a sucker for songs with GREAT back stories and this one has a GREAT back story.  It involves the greatest Ivy League steeplechaser EVER!

I detest this song.  It is boring and annoying and I can't get away from it.  It's not even original or well-written.

You honestly discredit yourself more and more with each and every post.

No.  It's a great song.  "Girlfriend" is an awful song.

I'm sorry it isn't a hugely popular, No. 1 song like "Smashing Pumpkins'" "Tarantula."

Is thinking that someone is discrediting themselves something hipsters do?

I liked it the first couple times I heard it, most for it's simplicity.  But after a few listens I've found it rather trite.  And since I don't listen the radio that often, that's not from overplay.  I don't hate it though.

That being said, I have been tempted to download the single from emusic.

Huh? I haven't heard it, but I'm guessing this is an unnecessary comparison. By the way, who's waiting?
(Although, Regis and Kelly are super excited for their appearance tomorrow!)

This song is pretty good, I have to admit. Not brilliant, but an absolute breath of fresh air next to the umpteen Hoobastanks, Nickelbacks, and grunting, guttural fifth-gen Vedders that have clogged the mainstream rock airwaves for the last decade.

Hey There, Delilah: thanks for not sounding like music by and for developmentally challenged 12-year-olds with violent tendencies. Good job.

I just listened to it on MySpace.  First time hearing it.  I'm certainly not afraid of pop, but it's not doing anything for me.  I'll give it a few more listens and see if I begin to love or hate it (or remain indifferent).

Woo hoo, they're on a big amusement park tour sweeping across America.

By the way, if you're a big fan, there's a message from Tom in the band on the MySpace page:  here (http://www.myspace.com/plainwhitets)  Apparently the message is that they've added "Hey Delilah" to their album.  A la XTC's late addition of "Dear God" to Skylarking when that single took off....

I think a better comparison would be Sugar Ray adding "Fly" to their album at the last minute.

Ha.  Well, the rub there is, I didn't know they did that.    ;)

I had heard it was about one of the guys dogs. Seeing that lyric, I now believe it. Have never heard the song though.

Skylarking works much better in its original form with "Mermaid Smiled" instead of "Dear God." Fortunately, it was put back in its proper place on the reissue. "Dear God" is now a bonus.

That's The Way My Love Is is the best track on there.

I wasn't going to start a new thread on it, but I also honestly LOVE the new My Chemical Romance single, "Teenagers."  That's a great song, too.  It's got that Cheap Trick/Rocky Horror/Meatloaf/Alice Cooper vibe to it.

Come on, drop your hipster pose.  Someone's also got to admit that that one's really short, funny and ebola-like contagious.

It's OK, but I liked "The Black Parade" more.

My Chemical Romance? I've never heard of them... are they a Pixies cover band or something?

Brian Walalce seemed like a bitter, cynical, irrational dude . . . but Brian Wallace is a caring, sensitive soul.  Its like Dr. Walalce and Mr. Wallace, or vice versa.

I am not a hipster, but even I think that song is not very good.  The difference between that song and the influences you lsited is that most of those influences can sing.  I've grown tired of Gerard Way's screaming into the mic.

i used to like this song till i read a story about it in the paper and saw a picture of Delilah and found her rather unattractive. now the song makes no sense to me.

This is an important thread: I was driving a car that had nothing but radio last month, flipping the channels like mad, trying to find something that was at least interesting. "Hey There" came on, and I was caught, not exactly captured, but close: fascinated by the lineage of the song. It sounded, to me, like a Paul Simon re-write, but, importantly, filtered through the generation that identified with the garbage bag/rain scene in "Garden State." A sensitive, just-moved-to-New-York-to-make-it-song. A re-write of "America." An American song, then. A song of longing. A song of hope, a song of America before it broke. But it might not be more than a song that got me through a long traffic light. In any case, this song signaled to me that there will be (at least) a brief era in which the fragmentation/niche life of ipod/xm/self-programmed music will give way to a few mass-identified radio hits. Is it beginning? Don't ask me, I've been playing the first Suicide album alot lately...

I remember PWT opening for Lucky Boys Confusion back in 2001 at the Metro, why the hell are they on MTV?
