I heard a rumor that there was a new music club being opened at 9th & U? Anyone know anything else about this? What kind of size? Type of music? Set up?
This would make quite a concentration in that 2 blocks for music.
Maybe it'll be a DC Iota type place. That'd be great, save the drive.
-
I heard the opening was delayed a week...but this is from bigyawn.net -- not sure if it's been here on the 930 board already as well.
There is a new venue opening in the DC area. DC9 opens its doors on February 6. The music venue and lounge holds 250 people, and will also have DJs spinning on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The goal, according to part-owner Bryan Deily, is to have a venue that cares about the sound of the music. "...we plan to take great detail in the sound with a full time sound engineer who will do everything to make the bands achieve the sound they desire..." says Bryan.
The venue is located at 1940 9th St., just south of U St.
For info, call (202) 483-5000, or check out their website
www.dcnine.com, (http://www.dcnine.com,) it should be up and running in a few days. We here at BigYawn think DC9 might be the answer to an underdeveloped niche that's remained since the closings of The Metro and The Bayou. Here's hoping for great success for DC9. We hope to be there every step of the way.
-
are you saying that bigyawn.net is not a reliable source? huh? huh?
-
DC9 is opening this Friday. It will feature mostly Rock and Indie bands every night and DJ's after 10:00 PM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
-
Oh great...yet another club Rhett can boast is superior to the 930!!

NO! The 'but' was misplaced (and we all know how often that happens!). Meant that I knew the opening was changed, and otherwise the info came from bigyawn (giving cred to the site -- a better friend o' bigyawn would have put a link. NEXT TIME!) ;)
-
Look, I am not going to bother posting news for you people unless you start reading it! I posted over two weeks ago about this venue. And no one so much as noticed. I'm sure Rhett doesn't read any topic i start anyway.
-
I don't even care and yet I still noticed...there was some discussion about whether it was named after a pistol or something, I recall...
-
i noticed, would dig getting the opportunity to dj there
-
So what kind of bands are going to play and be all finished before 10:00 on a weekend night??
-
My kind of bands!

DC9 does plan on opening this Friday if DCgov stops dragging their feet.
Weâ??ll know in the next day or so.
-
So you all know, DC9 is going to be opening tomorrow night @ 8, and they will have a DJ starting at 10. I plan on being there, just to check this place out, and to do a story for bigyawn. Will try to get you some love kosmo.
-
Any idea what to expect -- what kind of music they'll be spinning, etc? Or am I jumping the gun and you'll be finding out all that tonight?
-
thanks for getting in a good word for me... i've been in touch with DC9bill and will be getting him a mix cd or two soon. right now the dj slots have been filled but things change. DC9bill sent me a link to one of his mixs and it's quite good. he's dj's on saturday.

Yeah, i don't know...hoping to get a good sense myself. they have shown some interest in possibly working with BigYawn on a regular night, so I'm curious just to see what it is all about. I guess Kosmo would know better than I.
-
The DC Nine Website (http://www.dcnine.com) is now live. There is even a forum :D Taking a look at the music page confirms what DC9Bill emailed me yesterday and the mix that he sent me the link to. The club is aiming for airing music from the last couple of years that is otherwised looked over by the Clear Channels of the world. I think most of the regulars will find one or two artists of interest on the list ;)
-

Well, just got back, and i have to say, after seeing this place, I am really excited. It is two levels, with the performance space on the top floor. It is bigger and better than velvet and black cat backstage. They are starting shows next Saturday, and i heard that one band you will see this spring is The Go. Kosmo was there, and he seemed to be buddying up to the DJs when i left. Hope that went well for you kosmo. I spoke with one of the owners, and he seems to have a lot of great ideas. The bands will play early, being over by 10, which allows the DJs to start. A bit different. Needless to say, I'm pretty pumped.
-
i'd have to agree with redsock... DC9 makes a very good first impression. the second floor performance/dance area doesn't feel cramped like the velvet lounge or cafe saint-ex. there are plenty of booths to put one's arse if you don't want to stand all night. there is even a nice alcove near the back with comfy couches to be able get away from the racket. the downstairs bar area is cool as well.
i was impressed by how friendly the staff was, unlike other local venues. while there the dj played the tracks listed on the website, and people were spotted shaking their groove thang. i was impressed with the sound, although it's apparently a temporary setup.
with DC9's plan to start shows early the weekend, one would in theory be able to get in three shows without having to go very far :) now all we need is a record shop and good burger joint in the area and that corner of dc will be a great place to hang.

Fantastic news, red & Kosmo....I am psyched -- just what we need. Yes, the record store needs to be next!

They carded at the door.
A note on the lounge area Kosmo mentioned...it is kinda off to he side, and you can't really see the stage from there, but the owner told me they plan on having close-circuit TV in there to watch the band. Another weird, could be cool, little quirk.

Scaring? Man you must be a pussy, Mank. He's so benign, and has been there for so long. I give him $5 every few visits; he's obviously a local.

You missed the humour....or maybe you didn't! Remember the thread about the homeless around Nation and a few people said they were scary, then the whole topic got on about homeless blokes in general....I was just referring to that. Whatsisface that hangs round the 930 calls me his 'brotha' because we sit and have a chat whenever we cross paths.
I was laughing at the fact some people are freaked out by homeless bums, when all they are is people.
-
sorry, Mank. Thought you were talking about the guy outside the Black Cat! Didn't realize there were so many guys hanging out music clubs on a regular basis... I missed the Nation homeless guy thread. With Nation, don't know how it's not the whole 'hood that doesn't freak folks out!
;)
-
there are only two now, but DC9 is adding bands to the calendar... there is also a link to mp3 stream of tunage being featured at the club. the songs mentioned on the music page are included.
-
I understand it's so the DJs can play, but still, this is odd:
no advance tickets are sold
Sun-Wed first band goes on at 9:00pm
Thur-Sat first band goes on at 8:00pm

I'm not sure that's going to work, opening band starting at 8pm on Saturdays, a bit early for a weekend...no? Most folk don't even venture out till after 9'ish on Saturday, or go for dinner first. I could be full of crap though because it's been quite a while since I was out every Saturday.
I used to go to a place in Plymouth (UK) that had a DJ early, then the band around 10 then the DJ after...the draw to get folk in for the early DJ session was cheap booze and no cover. It was no cover before 9 and reduced booze prices till the band came on. Seemed to work very well for them.
For GGW and Rhett, I know I'm full of crap all the time so don't bother with the predictable post please.

The diagnosis is the first step in the treatment process.

No, I think you're right, mank. All this says to me is that they'll focus mainly on local bands that don't get much play in other clubs (ie, Black Cat backstage or Velvet Lounge). Because the bands are definitely taking a back seat to the DJ.
This online streaming of the DJ set is pretty interesting, as well... Have the folks that have opened this place been involved in other DC ventures? Does anyone know?

The owner I know is/was in a local band, but I don't think he ever was involved in anything like this. Dunno about the other folks, but often people who get involved in projects like this are always involved in projects like this.

Let me translate...people who start clubs and nightspots often have a history of starting other clubs and nightspots.
-
There are 4 guys who are partners and own DC9. Two of them were/are involved with The Big Hunt. The other two have other DC projects, but... I can't remember which ones.
-
Hot dog, love to support the Big Hunt guys...once tooms finds out, he may well travel back from NYC just to patronize their new establishment!
Also, bodes well for the place as management has been able to keep the B.H. going and popular for so long...
-
I love Big Hunt. Wish I could make it there more often.

Wow that's a great get. Both bands are fantastic...and could easily end up playing the Black Cat this time next year.
-
Damn, walkie, last thing I need is another show on the 6th! I'm so torn between the Bigger Lovers and Undertones...
By the way, I am going to be a HUGE fan of this place, DC9. I was there tonight before the FoW show, and it's just the bomb. A crazy biker rock band was upstairs, which is a great space for a band and hanging out to a DJ. Bartender's great (and has worked at or managed some of my favorite DC bars over the ages -- 15 Minutes, Crow Bar...). AND, the way it kicks Velvet's ass is that there's a BAR UPSTAIRS. Wow, you can order a drink *while* watching the band.
I'm not slagging on Velvet, though -- it's filled a great niche in the scene, and I'll keep watching out for shows there as well.

Speaking of which.... my band ("Cartel") is playing the Velvet Friday March 26..
