Title: dc residents: what water do you drink?
Post by: edbert on August 01, 2007, 10:54:00 am
Anyone actually drink tap water in DC?  I drank from the tap when I lived in other places, but in DC I've always been scared off by the reports of high chloroform or whatever it's called.  So I buy gallon jugs of spring water. But now I'm learning about how bad buying bottled water is for the environment and having second thoughts.  What's the alternative?  Brita says their filters don't do anything for chlorine compounds, other than remove the odor

I spent the majority of my life in a swimming pool so if chlorine compounds affect people than I'm already screwed.  I use a Brita jug.

I drink alkaline water that's coming out of a water ionizer. It's directly connected to tap water. No need to buy bottled water as it can get expensive over time.

This is the model we have:

I'm reacting to reports like this one:

"New Fears Raised Over Safety of D.C. Water (Washington Post 07/19/2007)
 ------------
Toxic chlorine pollutants were found at unsafe levels in 40 percent of D.C. tap water samples tested this spring during the water utility's annual chlorine surge, according to a national environmental group's report... "

I was in a bar recently and ordered a mixed drink... as I was about to take a sip I got a whiff, and it reeked! Turns out it was the ice.  The barkeep took a whiff and then poured it out and sold me a beer instead.

I heard that Ryan Adams has substituted vodka for water for the last five years.

Americans are big fucking babies when it comes to water. Our water is fine compared to most of the world. It's cleaned and filtered and you can easily filter it further at home. But we've been taught by our crap media system to distrust it and instead pay billions of dollars a year for bottled water, much of which is tap water anyway. Corporate media breeds distrust of government-run services and utilities and persuades the public to put its trust in private enterprise, businesses that always put profit first and everything else after that, including public health. So we suck from the dihydrogen oxide teat of Corporate America instead of pressuring our elected representatives to improve water quality and we wonder why the rest of the world hates us.

Brita website. Can't link because all the content is wrapped up in some Shockwave player or whatever. But if you select a pitcher product then click on 'impurities reduction' it says "Reduces: Chlorine(taste and odor)", in other words the carbon filter reduces the taste and odor, not the chlorine itself

I had a similar experience recently.  I was wondering why all of the drinks tasted so bad.

I read that differently.  I think their point is that chlorine is not an "impurity" like lead, but that it is an additive that effects the taste and odor and that the filter removes it.

If you look at other parts of their site, it says that the filter removes 99% of chlorine.  Here are some links to the UK and Australian sites that say the same.

Here's a guy that did his own test and says the filter removes 90% of chlorine compounds.

Why is it when I housesit at my parents in Montgomery County, I feel like I'm going swimming in a pool? The levels of Chlorine are incredibly noticeable compared to anywhere else around the area, including the city itself!

I have a PuR filter for me and dog though  :)

I have a filter, but generally there's a 24 pack of Aquafina in my house.

no, i think government run services do a pretty good job on their own of causing people to distrust them.

I think DC tap water gets a very bad rap.

I travel a lot for work and I get to "experience" tap water all over the US and Canada.

Florida tap is disgusting, all over the state, particularly in Jacksonville whhere it tastes like a musty old basement, and in Orlando where it tastes like manatee poop. I even brush my teeth with bottled water in Florida.

San Antonio water is not much better; it leaves almost a film in your mouth.  It just doesn't "feel" like water when you drink it.

And the quality of the water is 24-point bold headlines from time to time in many of the cities I visit.

I'd love to see where DC tap ranks compared to the rest of the US.  And I would much rather have the chlorine than the what-stinks of Florida tap.

I'm a DC resident, and usually quick to defend our city, but DC tap water deserves its bad rap.   Several times since I've lived here there have been official warnings about drinking the water, with orders to boil it first.   That is what you do in third world countries, not here.

And to the original poster, it's not high chloroform in the water, it's high coliform (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coliform_bacteria).  That means DC tap water is full of crap.  Literally!

For me I use a Brita jug filter.  Aquafina is just filtered tap water (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-water27jul27,0,3510167.story?coll=la-home-center) -- you can filter it yourself, why pay for it?

Thanks, I suspected I had the wrong word. So I'm off at lunch to pick up a Brita dealie, even though I haven't read anything that says whether it filters out coliform.  My plan is to use that most of the year, and only buy bottled water if the tap water is noticably whiffy

when i lived in gaithersburg, i didnt drink the tap water because it always tasted weird. now i live in bethesda, and the water doesnt taste bad at all - which doesnt really make sense, but whatever. i dtink the tap water now. sometimes i'll buy those gallons of water from wal-mart for 60 cents, but i have no filter on my tap. i should get one.

If it comes from the Anacostia you may want to filter it...

Here's a guide on what filters do what.  It looks like PUR filters actually are more thorough than Brita.
