Title: Clear Channel's Indie Radio
Post by: vansmack on February 09, 2004, 01:50:00 pm
While in LA this weekend, I finally got a chance to hear Clear Channel's new "Independent" radio Station ( Indie 103.1 (http://www.indie1031.fm/main.html))this weekend and I'll tell you, I was impressed.  At first I was leary of another attempt to unseat infinity Boradcasting's KROQ as LA's "alternative" radio station, but with Clear Channels money, maybe this will do it (wow, did I just say that?  Somethig positive to come from Clear Channel?).  If not, it will at least change the playlist at KROQ and hopefully influence other stations across the nation.

There are a few playlists on the internet, but they pale in comparison to what I heard over the weekend:

 Death Cab
 Grandaddy
Love and Rockets (not Ball of Confusion)
 Ramones
Interpol ("The New," which I thought was bitchen)
 REM (Perfect Circle)
 Pixies
 Broken Social Scene
The Shins (not, So Says I)
 BRMC
 Jeff Buckley
 The Libertines
 Supergrass
 Polyphonic Spree
 Bright Eyes
 Thrills
 Stills
 Atmosphere
 Johnny Cash
 elefant
 Minor Threat

And about 15 other bands that probably only Pollard and Jag know.

Anyhow, you can  listen live (http://www.indie1031.fm/listenlive.html)  to the new station.

Any station that plays Johnny Cash AND Minor Threat can't be too bad.

Looks like they're going for the "Classic Alternative" sound, with a dash of new stuff.

Ramones -- We Want the Airwaves
Bob Marley -- Roots, Rock, Reggae (Remix)
 Cult -- Love Removal Machine
Crystal Method -- (The new one)
 Beck -- Golden Age
 NoFX -- Franco Unamerican
 Nirvana -- On a Plain
 Peaches & Iggy Pop --
 Replacements -- Alex Chilton
 X -- White Girl
 Chicks on Speed --
 Catherine Wheel -- Crank
 White Stripes -- Hello Operator
 Smithereens -- Blood and Roses
Buzzcocks -- What Do I Get
Lion Rock -- Rude Boy Rock
 Bauhaus -- Passion of Lovers

Two reggae tunes in a little over an hour -- no complaints from me.

While it sounds like they play some good tunes, the phrase "Clear Channel indie radio" is like the mother of all oxymorons.

 Jumbo Shrimp
 Military Inteligence
 Postal Service
 Living Dead
 Head Butt
 Clear Channel Indie Radio

Since when is Johnny Cash "indie"?

And if they are playing Johnny Cash, how about some other great older country artists like Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and George Jones?

The idea of the station, the fact that it's Clear Channel, and the playlist just go to show how "indie" has now been completed co-opted by moneyed interests, a.k.a. capitalism.

"Indie cred"? Doesn't mean a damn thing to me.
