Okay, so I've been wearing Docs for 16 years. In 16 years, I've gone through only 3 pairs of docs. I've worn out my most recent pair (purchased only 3 years ago), and I'm looking for a replacement. Now that I'm in my early 30s (ack), my girlfriends tease me for still wearing Docs - so junior high school, right?
Anyway, before I say screw it and just buy another pair of Docs, I'm wondering whether there are any good substitutes out there that (1) are comfortable, (2) show appropriate (meaning if someone stomps on my foot or something, I won't lose a toe), (3) will give me at least a little bit of height and (4) are not hideous. Oh and (5) don't make me look like Punky Brewster (meaning Chuck Taylors are totally out). Suggestions???
-
Um. I suppose then your only option is to continue to be made fun of and buy another pair of Docs.
Because the pair of shoes you just described as wanting doesn't exist.
-
Keen make some nice, solid, stylish comfy shoes.
BUt i think what you might be looking for are Danskos.
They're expensive too, but they're made to last. Zappos.com has a great selection.
-
i *heart* these.

Thank you - that's the brand I was looking for. Smackette (and the rest of the hospital workers) swear by their Dansko clogs, and they're on their feet all day. Jusy by looking at them, I thought they were crazy, but she's been wearing them for three years now with no complaints.

what's wrong with docs :o

Geez! What is it this week with women asking questions like this (Walkonby's "Am I a Dork?" thread)? Is everybody's menstrual cycle syncing up?
Who CARES what your girlfriends think? They're just jealous 'cuz they can't FIT in a size 6....pair of Docs.
Don't give up the dream. Keep wearing the shit-kickers.

I used to sell shoes back in college- dexter and clarks make really comfortable ones.
Last year I lived in my cowboy boots (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/8635160/c/53400.html). I loved them even though they had a leather sole and I ended up on my ass a lot.
Lately I've been wearing boots with a shorter, thicker heel like these (http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=273378&CategoryID=25126) to shows.
For shows get there early and grab a spot on the rail for support or if you're really hurting put a pair of flip flops in your purse for the walk back to the car.
-
I don't wear leather shoes so my options are limited. I LOVE my Grinders which are similiar to Docs but have some cool patterns on them and come in steel toes which I always find needed.
-
I still have a couple of pairs of Docs, but they are definitely among the less comfortable in terms of standing at a show.
I think Campers do quite well for comfort. Or running shoes.
-
well, i am a huge docs fan, and think that 30 is not too old at all to keep wearing them, so i might be biased. your friends are silly - a nice pair of white or navy patent 1460s are perfectly age appropriate. BUT
if you are looking for options in the boot realm, i have a similar love for frye boots. they have tons of different styles that range from western to motorcycle to simple stylish and modern, and they are comfy as hell once you break them in and last forever, so i would check them out. i don't know what you look like (/how tall are you?), but off the bat i love these (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/30146594/c/3.html) and these (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/24584708/c/6.html) . and any colour harness boot is a winner in my eyes (for men too!).
in the non-boot realm, (again i don't know price range either) i suggest chloƩ flats. they are simple and elegant/awesome, can be worn at ANY age, and are so high quality that i'm convinced they will withstand anything. their leather is insane. comfy, too - you can definitely move around in them. most of their flats are made with a tiny heel so you may get a little bit of height. they also have great boots.
for a cheaper option i suggest looking at rocketdog. they have cute flats - probably the most comfortable flats in the world, but they get icky fast due to fabric lining so i stopped buying them.
remember that a good quality pair of kicks is made to last and will be worth every penny.

I will. I'll still be happy in my old ratty purple ones, thank you.

i have a pair of basic black docs under my desk, but mary janes on my feet right now.

Vamos a ver....
I think I wore my Docs until about 28-29. Of course I still wear Chuck's almost exclusively when not at work or exercising, so to each her own.

yeah; i will take my chucks to the grave BUT OUR LADY HERE REFUSES. my friend's dad is like 60 and he still wears chucks and it's fucking awesome.

You had shoes that were 32 years old? Yikes.
I still have a pair of Nike high tops and Timberland work boots from junior high and high school, respectively, making them about 27 and 24 years old. Never wear either of them though.

these (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/29398990.html) are what i wear to most shows...except in navy blue. if i'm not in those, im in vans slip-ons or chucks.
i also wouldn't be caught dead in any of the aforementioned shoe suggestions, but that's just me :)
-
i am addicted to fluevogs.
website (http://www.fluevog.com/)
sometimes, they go on sale. You used to be able to get them for super cheap (like 50 bucks), which is when I bought my lot.
-
IThat's ok. I wouldn't be caught dead in the company of someone with those things on.

I have huge feet. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Size 15. I don't have THAT much trouble finding shoes but for example, there's a company called Oddball Shoes which specialize in big shoes. Of the 117 shoes listed in their latest catalog, only 16 were wider than D.
I'm like a male Peggy Hill.

hahah, no. when *i* was around 32. i use to probably have 4 different pairs of docs. now i'm down to one.

This is my favorite thread ever :) I love the Lacoste flats, Miss P.
Thanks so much for the ideas (and the entertainment). Keep the suggestions coming if you've got em!
-
btw, i realized quickly last night after the show began that steel toed boots is a very good idea, for men and women.

Don't you know that wearing white shoes after labor day is a fashion no-no?

Those lacoste flats are an abomination. If my girl bought those, I'd have to consider breaking off the engagement. At least the other ugly shoes (danskos, etc.) have some functionality to recommend them.
Seriously, just buy another pair of docs. They work, they have a subcultural association you seem to appreciate, and they're not outrageously expensive.

Same here. In my mid-twenties now and have been wearing them since I was 15. Unfortunately, when I bought my last pair, I didn't realize that they started making them in China. I got the size I always get without trying them on, and they don't fit the same. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one still wearing 'em.

Based on the evidence provided in a WMATA poster, it's a bad idea to wear flip-flops if one intends to use the escalators. In the picture of actually mangled footwear within the system were flip-flops.

The 930 club should make a poster of footwear that was left behind by crowd surfers-kind of a what not to wear PSA.

I've had a pair of these for about 6 years, including two winters of wearing them 6+ hours every day dog-walking, and they're still in basically the exact same condition as they were when I got them. Harley Davidson "Side Street". And no, they've never once touched a motorcycle (though I do wear them when mountain biking in the winter).

i have never found any docs (or any other boots for that matter) after a show. mostly flip flops, and the occasional sneaker.
flip flops and anything open toed are a ridiculously bad idea to wear to a club. heels are pretty silly too. most nights, a good pair of sneakers will do just fine. when it gets rough, boots are your friends. when it gets really heavy, you will thank your steel toes the next morning.
i have seen some nasty foot injuries at the club. trust me, i know what i'm talking about here. a heel through someone's foot. crushed toes. nails ripped off. cuts. bruises. people tripping and falling down stairs.
that, plus you may have to navigate the obstacle course of spilled beer, broken bottles, vomit, and other various nastiness that is often created by our crowds. you're going to be standing for a while, too. smart footwear is a must.
-
Just got a pair of these...
<img src="http://www.zappos.com/images/722/7221399/3034-229429-d.jpg" alt=" - " />
Zappo's $83.95... Heartland $39.99.

my favorite shoes are my rocketdog astroids. they don't make them anymore though unfortunately but sometimes a new pair pops up on ebay. the soles do wear out after about a year which sucks.
also:
<img src="http://i.shoebuy.com/pi/sauco/sauco32841_26246_lg.jpg" alt=" - " />
sooo comfortable.

I'm 47 years old and been wearing Docs since I was 12.......admittedly, I don't have a much of a need for them down here in S. FL but I still own a pair.
If it's comfort/quality you're looking for then I strongly recommend www.merrell.com (http://www.merrell.com) I've owned quite a few pairs of these over the years and they are the best made and most comfortable shoes out there...
-
When I go to shows, I'm usually in my blue trainers or a pair of low-heeled boots. I don't dress to be the hot chick, so FMB are not in the equation at all. ;)
Wear what you like and allow you to feel comfortable in the venue setting.

I bought my first pair of Fluevogs recently and love them. I managed to find the style I wanted on Zappos and paid $50 less than buying from the Fluevog site. I'd never wear them to a venue, but still super-cute.
-
Why wouldn't you wear them to a venue? Because you wouldn't want them to get messed up? I wear mine everywhere...

Are we talking about shoes for comfort or shoes for show-going? The shoes Relaxer and Chaz posted are comfy and look good too (to me anyway). I have Bjorn boots that look like the ones Chaz posted - they are pretty comfy and warm to boot. (!) They are not too feminine & are flat (must pair with shorter jeans, etc.). My feet felt okay after a show. Work or a lot of activity I haven't tried but once. I found them (black) a couple years ago at TJ Maxx...but assume you could find the brand online or another store.
Bjorn also makes shoes that look the same - one would never know under a pair of pants/jeans.
Clarks are comfy but I have yet to find a pair that didn't geek me.
What is too old for Docs? I mean, for shows and with jeans/pants you can't really notice...Not sure I understand - they are just boots. (I've been wanting to drag out my burgundy ones b/c I truly need a comfortable boot/shoe for shows but not sure I'd wear them on casual Friday to work - is this something I'll regret? lol)
Chucks (and Docs) don't suit certain people but I don't understand how Chucks would not be age appropriate... at least for someone who is 30 and at a concert.

sh*t, sorry, with apologies to my former 90s self. ;) To make for the slip, I'm definitely wearing them...perhaps to a forumite holiday shindig?
