Hello All,
At some time between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., the bandâ??s gear trailer was stolen from outside a house in SE Portland, near the Aladdin Theatre. Heartbreakingly, it housed practically every piece of instrumentation belonging to the Decemberists.
So this is a sort of call to arms; I figure if we get the word out, maybe we all can collectively track it down.
The trailer in question is a WHITE 6′ x 12′ WELLS CARGO trailer. Thereâ??s a green â??VTâ?? (as in Vermont) sticker on the side door, among other smaller stickers, a BRITISH FLAG sticker on the front, and a â??NO ON 36′ sticker on the left back door. The license number is U34 8717 (Oregon).
Any information you might have on this, please report to the Portland Police. If you do see it, by all means call 911.

that sucks
-
Ahh maybe it is for the best. I preffered Colin solo that way he cannot play the Tain.
Yay!

I posted this in the St. Patty's Day thread, since this is how I celebrated:
I was in Portland, OR, gearing up for the Decemberists show at The Crystal Ballroom. And then my friend who lives out there (and bought the tickets) calls me and says, "you sittin' down? All the band's stuff was stolen, and they don't say whether the show is cancelled or not." See Pitchfork story below, and I'll tell you what happened next.....

The Decemberists' Trailer, Gear Stolen!
(See Pitchfork story posted by ggw}
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, they borrowed instruments and they were GREAT. The new songs sound awesome, and the addition of Petra Haden adds some really interesting, different harmonies (and a great cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights"). It was really quite funny because some of the instruments -- the standing double bass, a bass guitar and something else -- still had price tags hanging on them. It was a wee bit Hee Haw. But, Portland is their hometown, so I wasn't surprised they could get gear. But I was surprised at how well they played with borrowed instruments, etc.
As for the Crystal Ballroom, it's a new venue in Portland (relatively -- couple years old). Big space, and the drinking section is fully separated with black-light entrance, and you have to stay there if you have a drink. There's an aisle divided between the two sections, and they have a beer/jagermeister cart they run up and down the aisle. And the floor is bouncy -- some technical architectural feature. ?? Great show, cool to be at a new place, but certainly reifies my love and admiration for the 9:30.
Markie, I think the addition of Petra will make the show worthwhile. Plus, no "Tain"!

Vancouver Show Postponed
General News â?? admin @ 9:28 am
Hello All,
Iâ??m terribly sorry to report that weâ??ve cancelled our show in Vanouver as a consequence of our recent gear theft. We desperately need just one more day to breath and collect our thoughts before heading out on the rest of the tour.
This a postponement, not a cancellation, and as soon as I have information about another date I will post it. All other dates will go an as scheduled.
Thanks to everyone for being so sweet and supportive during this whole debacle. There are some ugly, soulless people in this world but thankfully they are exponentially outnumbered by lovely, kind and sweet people.
Colin

Hello All
As you may or may not know, the police found our trailer. Tucked in some tidy corner of Clackamas, just outside Portland, the thieves had emptied it of all its contents aside from the boxes of t-shirts and CDâ??s. Getting the trailer and the merchandise back was a huge relief, but we are still bereft of our beloved instruments. In an effort to get the word out, weâ??ve included the Stolen Gear List (http://www.decemberists.com/Gear_Manifest.pdf) on the site. You will need Adobe Reader to view it.
We entreat you to keep an eye out for these instruments if you happen to be browsing through eBay or craigslist or are wandering through your local music store or pawn shop.
Also, a few kind souls from the message board have set up a benefit fund through PayPal for offsetting the cost of replacing these instruments, as well as the outboard gear of our brand new sound engineer, Will Markwell, who had been with us for only one show before this terrible event occurred. Naturally, we feel pretty terrible about this. Sadly, much of the equipment was not insured. We know to not be so callow in the future.
If youâ??d like to donate to this fund (between $1 and $100 â?? it all helps) simple go the following page: www.decemberists.com/fund.html (http://www.decemberists.com/fund.html) and enter the amount you feel comfortable donating.
Thank you so much.
Colin.
-
I plan on donating and hope everyone else will too.
Come on, the Tain is awesome. It's not like the rest of the Decemberists' stuff, but it's musically an achievement that's truly amazing.
-
I dunno, any band that is up to playing venues the size of the 9:30 Club is probably not really in major need of donations to replace their stolen instruments.
This same thing happened to BR549 last year, twice. Insurance paid both times. It seems it's not an uncommon thing, and to not have insurance on the stuff is just retarded. I feel bad for them, but not that bad.

PICARESQUE
The Decemberists
The Decemberists' Colin Meloy is a man of many affectations. He sings in an approximation of a British accent, has an acute affinity for maritime themes, and his songs are stuffed with words that would make a Scrabble player salivate.
The first line of "The Infanta," the first song on "Picaresque," ends with the word "palanquin," which Meloy promptly half-rhymes with "elephant." Needless to say, the Decemberists trade in deliriously pretentious faux exoticism, the songs populated by prostitutes, princes and pirates, spies and street vendors coveting "silk Arabian thread," all in service of songs redolent of the lush romanticism popularized by the likes of Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill and (splitting the difference) cult crooner Scott Walker. What brings such immaculately detailed songs as "16 Military Wives," "The Engine Driver" and the epic "The Mariner's Revenge Song" (which ends with an East European-styled rave-up) down to earth is Meloy's modest voice, his comfortably mundane indie-rock delivery somewhat at odds with the highly literate material.
It's a Brechtian illusion-breaking reminder that, like the staged interpretations of several songs reproduced in the disc's booklet, the Decemberists' carefully constructed tunes -- folk flavored with the half-familiar foreignness of the Old Country -- ultimately amount to little more than an elaborate game of dress-up.
-- Joshua Klein
The Decemberists are scheduled to play May 6 at the 9:30 club.

I see someone got a thesaurus for Christmas. Actually, I'm envious. I wish I could write like that.

Thieves Who Took the Decemberist's Gear
The Willamette Weekly
BY PETE HUNT
This week's Rogue falls into the to-be-identified-later category. But rest assured, the Rogue's gallery has a slot waiting for the thieves who took the Decemberists' gear, if and when the "band-its'' are arrested. And for any would-be buyers of the Portland band's stolen instruments, the Rogue desk won't forget you, either.
When the Decemberists took the stage the night of St. Patrick's Day at the Crystal Ballroom, fans learned that a trailer packed with nearly every piece of the band's equipment had been stolen from outside a house near the Aladdin Theater. And this is no guitar-bass-drums skeleton crew; there's also the accordion, the banjo, the dulcimer, the mandolin....
The Decemberists got back to Portland after a gig in Eugene and parked the trailer about 3 am Thursday. Later that morning, no more trailer. Police found it in Clackamas, minus $40,000 worth of instruments and equipment, plus a good chunk of the band's merchandise.
The trailer had been sitting empty in the same spot for a week before the Eugene show. "In my opinion, we were targeted," says Decemberists road manager "Kong." "These guys were pros."
The loss was immense, but so was the outpouring of help from Lea Krueger, the Shins, the Dandy Warhols and other musicians. The Martin Guitar Company offered 6- and 12-string guitars on permanent loan.
And the band played on. Lead singer Colin Meloy told the Crystal crowd it was a shame to have gear stolen in your hometown but lauded fellow musicians for helping out. The band played a full set using instruments from opening act Okkervil River. The next night they played in Seattle, though they postponed a Saturday show in Vancouver, B.C., in order to regroup.
Fans of the Decemberists' folksy, yarn-spinning music were outraged by the theft. On the band's online message board, normally docile posters were in favor of castration for the perpetrators.
The band posted a stolen-gear list on its website (www.decemberists.com) and asked fans to be on the lookout.

i picked up the new album last night and love it-- it's really the best of Castaways. One song is Tain-y, but the rest is more traditional Melloy.
And isn't it great how many of the reviews are all about the lyrics and barely mention the music? It kills me. Get over it, man.

hm?
i love the band, but my favorite aspect of them is colin's lyrics ... musically they often seem like they're rewriting the same song, which certainly isn't a bad thing, but it's nothing to write home about, in my opinion ... his lyrics, on the other hand, are some of the best in rock today ...

You too can write like that.

Yes, but you have to agree that a music review really aught to say something about the music.
-
It's a real drag when the lyrics get in the way of perfectly crafted melody with nice arranged instrumentation. Who needs lyrics when you've got organs, violins, percussion and brass adding the finishing touches.
If "The Sporting Life" doesn't get those Indie kids dancing then they are truly rhythmically challendged. It's nice to have a new kicky indie pop song, because one can only use "Legal Man" by Belle & Sebstaine so many times.
Lets hope it dosen't take 40 years for them to give this record the same full orchestra, etc treatment offered Pet Sounds recently. Rockin' out at 80 is going to be a bit tough...
I do however like the lyrics of "16 Military Wives", then again I has already heard that one when the album got leaked. GGW is correct in his assessment that this record represents what the Decemberist do best, only even better.

Always check tickets.com before 930.com. I got Arcade Fire passes from tickets.com before there was any mention of their preformance on this site.

This is so true!
Remember, the more who know, the less likely you will be able to get into the early batch before the general public. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that.

Does anyone think this is going to sell out super fast? IE, can I get by the club.... This is exactly the kind of band that my spidey sense is bad about. I'd think for the 9:30, they'd be one of those bands to sell out over the course of a week or two, but I don't want to miss it (please don't say, if you don't want to miss it, go online...I know, I know).

My impression is that yes, it'll sell out quick. How fast did The Arcade Fire sell out?
-
... and the ticket surcharges are why, if I had the time to waste to take the metro into the city, are why you should buy tickets at the club.
Either way, I'm taking no chances about possible sell-outs.
-
I think The Decemberists' show last year at the 9:30 Club did not sell out, but I could be mistaken. Take from that what you will.
-
Decemberists DID NOT sel out last time. They also did not sell out Recher or Black Cat when they came through those times.

They did sell out the BC last Spring(?), maybe not in advanced but the day of show.
-
i'm not taking any chances
-
The comparison to Arcade Fire is very apt, I think...if it does sell out, should happen over a couple of weeks. I'll go by the club to get tix tonight. [Forgot last night, and didn't make it out to DDIHC/Phoenix show....]

I'm going out to California for Coachella April 30 and May 1 and wasn't planning on coming back until May 7. I love The Decemberists, but I've managed to miss them every time they came. So I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me how good they are live and if it's worth cutting my trip a day short to come back and catch the show. I would also like to see Willy Mason. He opened for Ray LaMontagne at IOTA a while back, but that sold out.

Hell, yeah. They're great live. I was at both the aforementioned 9:30 Club and Black Cat shows last year and even Colin Meloy's solo show at Iota a couple months ago. All really great shows. I haven't been disappointed by The Decemberists yet. (If you're one of those people who can't listen to "The Tain" in its entirety though, you might disagree with my assessment of their live performance.) Anyway, I'm really looking forward to hearing the material from the new album performed live.
-
The new album's material is awesome live. I saw them play on borrowed instruments and it was great. That's a feat. Still, it's pretty hard to recommend someone change travel plans, not knowing what you like in a live performance or music. If you like them, you will not be disappointed in the show (watch, Colin will have the flu or some shit when they're in DC now...)
-
Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be disappointed but I'm still pretty torn. I saw Colin solo, and would love to see the full band perform. BTW, I think "The Tain" is awesome. It would be great to hear that live. Did they play it at the last 9:30 show?
-
Yeah, they did, and it's even better live than on the EP.

All tha needs to be said is that Chris Funk wears a fake beard walking around the crowd with a high-school style marching band drum.

Decemberists fun in cocky sort of way
By Joshua Klein
Special to the Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0504090226apr09,1,5656746.story?coll=chi-newsnationworld-hed&ctrack=2&cset=true)
Published April 9, 2005
To call the rise of the Decemberists meteoric would be a bit of an overstatement; save such hyperbole for indie cause celebre the Arcade Fire. Yet the Portland, Ore., folk-rock outfit hit some sort of milestone by handily selling out the Metro Thursday night.
As demonstrated by the band's set, however, the Decemberists aren't nearly as clever and exciting as the band must think itself.
Erudite, twee and more than a little smug, songwriter Colin Meloy spins shaggy dog yarns full of exotic locales, big words and strange bedfellows, more interested in stylized affectation and fantasy than melody or sentiment.
The band, with its matching khaki and orange outfits, was with him every step of the way, but anyone not on the same wavelength as they were could easily feel that their whimsical constructions veered dangerously close to insufferable.
At least Meloy and his cohorts (including violinist and all around charming cheerleader Petra Haden) didn't take themselves as seriously live as they do on their earnest recordings. Wordy songs such as "The Infanta" and "16 Military Wives," from the group's proudly pretentious third album, "Picaresque," were endearing if not quite rousing, though just as often Meloy's literary dramas dragged.
But even at their fun best, as with "July, July!" and the Coleridge-meets-Melville sea shanty epic "The Mariner's Revenge Song," the group's smarty-pants, relentlessly precious and self-consciously quirky music came across like a folksy community theater approximation of They Might Be Giants. And as anyone familiar with that band knows, one is really enough.
Opening was the similarly aligned Okkervil River, from Austin, Texas, another six-piece and -- along with Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes and others -- part of an increasingly popular wave of shambling and endearingly precocious folk-rock.
Singer Will Sheff, prone to emotional blurts and, like his bandmates, electric and constantly in motion with nervous energy, grows bolder and more confident with each album.
Given that Okkervil River's latest album, "Black Sheep Boy," was only just released, fans were understandably more excited about older songs such as "Red" and "Kansas City," two of several crooked waltzes in the band's rapidly expanding repertoire.
While the crowd looked as if it had its fill by the end of the Decemberists' set, the bespectacled and scarf-adorned audience was dismayed when Okkervil River's tantalizing opening slot sadly came to a halt just as it was gathering steam.
-
ya know, i really hate when writers who don't like the music to start with review live shows. lots of his criticism should have been addressed in a CD review, not in a live review. if you don't like the stuff, why go to the show? it makes no sense.
-
I'm trying to get my friend to come to this show with me, and so I'm making a mix to introduce him to the band. Any tracklisting suggestions?

Pollard's and Markie's choices are good. Except from the latest album I would pick:
Eli, the Barrow Boy
The Engine Driver
-
Good choices, but I still need to pick up the 5 Songs EP. I definitely need to add The Engine Driver and On The Bus Mall.

I am LOVING 16 Military Wives these days...

There have been 3 at the Olsson's in Bethesda for months. I just didn't figure they had enough rare output for something to be considered not readily available. I was just curious if there were some tracks I didnt' know about.

Willy Mason is apparently off the bill. Rebecca Gates will be the opener (according to Pollstar).

Colin was on Air American Majority Report yesterday, the show can be downloaded here (http://www.airamericaplace.com/archive.php?mode=show&id=7) , and Colin was in the last segment.

So NPR has Rebecca Gates (of the Spinanes) opening, and starting at 9:30ish. The 9:30 Club website has Willy Mason (?) opening, and Eddie mentioned he might start around 10:15.

So how'd everyone like the show? It wasn't my favorite Decemberists show, but I really enjoyed myself. It looked like Colin and friends were having a lot of fun on stage! Was it just me or did they play mostly Picaresque material? (Anyone have the set list? Please post it if you do.) I overheard a few grumblings from different parties regarding the set list and how short the show seemed on the walk back to the Metro after the show. I certainly wanted more songs. A second encore and I would have been in heaven....
-
I'm with you 100% Darth. I've seen them four times, and this was my least favorite show. That said, I still had a great time. And luckily for me, I LOVE Picaresque, but also thought with three albums and a few EPs under their belts, they could have played for longer than 75 minutes. Especially as having Petra Haden with them really adds a new dynamic to the group, so more from them on their 'classics' would have been great.
A good show and a great Friday night activity, though. And for a sold out show, the crowd didn't seem unbearable (did anyone else notice this was a 'short' show, as in the audience was shorter than, say, the Queens of the Stone Age - I couldn't see anything during that show! I think it's the higher percentage of men at QOTSA...).
-
same feelings as both of you two, before the show started my girlfriend and i were talking about how we might not see some of our favorites like 'red right ankle' and 'apology song', it felt weird not to see 'july, july' and a couple other big older songs ... they just have too much material now, especially with a short set
that said, they're one of my favorite bands and it was a lot of fun ... good meeting you kosmo, thanks for the choice spot ...

Yeah, I love Picaresque too and was really looking forward to hearing the new album live, so no complaints about the set list from me. If I hadn't been familiar with Picaresque though, I might feel otherwise.
Well, I'm glad you had a good view of the stage, Bags, but I spent most of the night straining to see around this 6'6" Wookiee on the left side, about a third of the way back from the stage. He was like head and shoulders above everyone else though, so I think you're right about the average height.

I was disappointed they didn't play Red Right Ankle, but in general -- it was a wonderful show. It's always so much better when the musicians really look like they're enjoying themselves, and this was probably the silliest show I've ever seen, without question. I was worried about the new drummer, but after seeing him live, he'll do.

It was my first time seeing them on Friday night and I thought it was a great show. Their new drummer is my cousin, so it was fun to see him play with them. My friend was dissapointed they didn't play July July, but all in all, it was a great way to spend Friday night.
-
Good show but didn't have the spark the previous 9:30 show had... Will be glad when they the epic tracks of the new record out of thier system.
-
i'm all with the previous commenters. It was a fun show (with the exception of the frat boy i was ready to punch) but I missed The Tain, July July, and Red Right Ankle. I also felt like it was short. Then again, I'm short too.
Good seeing some boardies. It still stuns me how I've been to all of one gathering, last summer, yet some of y'all remember me. (Was I really that drunk there? Yeah, I guess so...)

If I was blocking Darth Ed's view, then that would mean Darth Ed was that fucking assclown who wouldn't shut up for more than three seconds at a time.
That guy was only slightly less annoying than his incredibly hideous female friend who, whenever she wasn't on her cell phone, would sing along to parts of every song (correct lyrics optional) at full volume.

Ass Clown: This songs about LA? Cool! I have been to LA! Awesome!
Me: Shut the Fuck up!
Ass Clown: <confused>
Me: <walk off to somewhere less annoying>

my only nitpick, is they have gotten to point where people feel the need to shout requests....

I am sure I was shouting requests at their first D.C. show.
But there is a difference between talking between songs as opposed to during songs....
-
my annoyance was this guy in a yankees hat (surprise surprise) who wouldn't shut up, sang along to every song, but had to keep turning to his friend to make sure his friend saw him singing along (look, I know all the lyrics!) and then giving a running commentary (this wasn't on the CD). i did the "is the show in the way of your conversation?" thing, but said it to the friend and not him, which didn't work. it was clear he was drinking a bit too much, and he even left during a song to get more beer. when he talked during Angles everyone shusshed him, and i did the "shut the f*ck up." this embarassed him to the point that he actually left.
please tell me it wasn't a boardie. what a jerk.

Ass Clown: Oh this is off the new album I dont know it.
Decemberists: Chimbly Sweep
-----------------------------------
Ass Clown and Most Annoying Girl Ever: I love this song, I love everything
Decemberists: playing song they claim to love
Ass Clown and Most Annoying Girl Ever: talk for most of song at shouting volume levels, when not talking MAGE yells words to song, but about a second off of what Meloy is singing
-----------------
and there are lots more, but there has been way too much complaining about crowds lately, so I will stop here

A severely painful knee was actually a blessing in disguise at this show. It completely justified leaning on the bar, which was actually quiet, or alternatively sitting on the couches in the back corner of the first floor. The sound was so good that I could hear everything and could pretty much see the stage from either location. It is not like it was some sort of effects-heavy show so not looking directly at the stage was not an issue, plus I didnâ??t have to deal with any annoying people. I guess you can be old and still go to shows.

making requests in a intimate venue can endured... shouting requests from the back of the club very annoying.. at least i didn't hear freebird which was heard at least twice at ben folds.
-
this girl last night at the ben folds right next to the food stand had the shrillest voice i've ever heard ... i could hear her above EVERYTHING through the first 5 songs or so
then this asshole couple barges their way though (a sold out crowd) to get closer, and precedes to take pictures of themselves (5!!!), with the flash of course on and pointing back towards everyone. fucking idiots.
-
you should have grabbed them, i'll bet the bounty put on them after the DAR Wilco shows still stands...
-
K8 - Moen is your cousin? He was really good on Friday.
I'm a big fan of Malkmus and the Jicks and Moen was great in that band, too.
-
JohnnyBaconbitz...yeah, John Mohen is my cousin. He's a really nice person (and a good drummer). The decemberists asked him to play with them on this tour b/c they were sans drummer.
Yes, there were definitely alot of people talking at this show too. here's my conversation with the jocks standing next to me drinking Miller Lite and talking through the first 5 songs...
me: Can you please shut up?
them: Oh, I'm sorry....no I'm not.
me; If you want to talk, you should go stand in the back.
Them: If you want to hear, you should go stand in the front.
What a bunch of pricks.

No, that wasn't me, I assure you, but I was standing a couple people to the left and slightly in front of that guy. I was there by myself and didn't say a word to anyone in the club all night, except a bartender and the door staph. My thanks to the woman (chimbly sweep? Markie?) who told that assclown to shut up twice, by the way. You're my hero.
Edit: Actually, maybe we're talking about different talkative assclowns. I'm referring to the assclown who was drinking beer and talking during every quiet song. He didn't have a girlfriend. (His friend did though, but she left about half way through because she couldn't see anything.) I think he was wearing a ballcap, but I'm not sure. I was trying my best to completely ignore him, so I never got a good look. You might be wondering why I know so much about this assclown then. It's because he talked a lot and very loudly.
ASSCLOWN (loud voice): This is probably my least favorite Decemberists song. I mean, of all their songs, I like this one the least!
WOMAN: Will you shut the f*ck up?
ASSCLOWN: Huh?
ASSCLOWN'S FRIEND: Dude, chill out.
ASSCLOWN: What?
ASSCLOWN'S FRIEND: Dude, *chill* *out*.
