I'm looking for Borf: I have a crush on him.
-
me too!
-
I thought it was cute enough when he stuck to tagging sidewalks, street lights, and the like, but now he's moved on to hitting commercial properties and houses in Shaw and it's getting a bit old.
Oh well, still better than seeing someone's unreadable initials or the poorly thought-out political statements of someone who thought the neighborhood was better when it was a crack-infested slum.
-
word on the street is that borf was arrested last week-- he was a high school aged boy and they're hitting him with trumped up felony destruction of property charges. but that's just what i heard.

No news here but you can look a one of Borf's better works. (IMO)
-
the top one (the one of the kid with the spray can) is on 18th street too.
i figuered it was borf.....it's kinda cool
-
This is one explanation of Borf from DCist.com. I don't know if it's true or an urban legend, but it's kind of cool in a poignant way.
I heard BORF is just some traveler kid that drifts around the east coast. They say he faked his death to get away from all the bullshit he had to put up with like school and work and all that, and now hes just putting up his face everywhere he goes to let people know heâ??s still alive. I donâ??t know if thatâ??s true, but a friend of mine saw him putting up a sticker in adams morgan and talked to him about it. She said thatâ??s what he told her. She also said he was the craziest kid sheâ??d ever met!

They'll probably charge him under the Patriot's Act for terrorist activities; and ship him out somewhere for life...being such a hardened criminal and all. Where do I send money for his defense fund?..and why are the good ones either married or underage?

The truth will be much duller.
It'll turn out to be three kids from St. Albans or Sidwell Friends cruising around in a BMW X5. The New York and Boston tags will coincide with trips they took to interview at Columbia or attend a summer session at Tufts.

nah... if that were true they would've stuck to ghetto-style tagging or "Anarchy" signs.

Please, say it isn't so. They'll take away the pass to his gated community in Great Falls for sure. I still love him. Maybe he can come live with me in the poor neighborhood.
-
at this point, there are enough hoodlums claiming to be borf, that the real borf has good cover.
-
"I thought what I would do was pretend I'm one of those deaf mutes"

FREE BORF!
-
and RIP MYER
-
has anyone noticed that for months DCist has been cleverly using Borf for free publicity? You do a google search for Borf, and it inevitably takes you to DCist.
-
get a can of spray paint and continue the legacy.
if you get bored, try "cool disco dan".

Wash. Post tells the whole sad story in an article WAYYY to long to reprint here. Borf's been dead for a few years, he's an old friend of the tagger, and it's the dead friend's picture that appeared everywhere...his charges are only misdemeanors at this point: a quote from DC's beauracracy: "Citizen's are ecstatic about him being caught." Yeah, I feel so much safer knowing he's in custody. WTF.
The kid deserves a metal; his portfolio of work is wonderful. Someone in the art world, please, give this kid a job! Now I have a crush on Borf's best friend.

What is sad about it?
The fact that he lives with his mom in a multi-million dollar home next to Riverbend Country Club?
The fact that he spent the spring touring Europe?
Or the fact that he may actually believe that he is an "anarchist" and not just another bored and spoiled rich kid?
-
i agree with ggw.
sounds like a real sad story.

get a grip

What surprises me are the people in my office that don't know who he is. His work is plastered in fairly open space. Do people just not notice what's going on around them?
-
I wouldn't have known or cared if it were not for this board.
I think he deserves a metal.
-
I'm surprised you didn't notice his stuff on 18th St. buildings.

I did after it had been posted here. I am not sure the one near Lulu's work actually has any text....
-
Oh yeah, I forgot. Suicide is SOOOO funny to many 930 forum members. Read the article, you hilarious doods. It's so much better when rich kids stick with their own kind at the River Bend Country Club, isn't it. :(

We'll have a few more beers
we'll sort it out somehow
You didn't post the article, nor a link to the article, your post did not mention suicide. We are meant to feel sorry about something we know nothing about.
What is it like to be a loon?

Why don't you read the article.
The only one that mentions suicide is his mom. The "artiste" himself just spouts off hackneyed angry-adolescent-with-a-little-learning ravings about capitalism being evil and speaks of how much he enjoys hearing people talk about him. It makes him feel like Batman!!!

yes.
what do you think would happen if some poor black kid starting tagging up the suburbs?
-
since when was street art exclusively for underprivilaged folk? If the artist turns out to not be "some dude off the streets" it isnt acceptable or good anymore? wake up, street art is street art.
-

does he do any real painting or is he just scribbling shit on walls. cause thats just fucking lame. and its not art.
does anyone have pics of any actual "art" that he does that they can post?
and why doesnt he tag up his own neighborhood?
-
Am I missing something here? Has this guy done anything other than writing his name and some cryptic messages around, in addition to a handful of stenciled faces? How did he become some folk hero for the "I have a romanticized idea of being disenchanted" segment? ALthough it is kind of nice to see people, now that they realize he's not a hobo but some rich kid, defend their love of him. Yawn.
-
as an anarchist. He decided he doesn't believe in the state, capitalism, private property, globalization. Most of all, he doesn't believe in adulthood, which he considers "boring" and "selling out.
--
Gee I wonder how that kid enjoyed that flight to Scotland? What airline do you suppose he flew? I wonder if his mom paid for the ticket with the Great Falls upbringing? Do you think he flew biz-ness class?

These type are pretty cool. The lame shit and just scribbling are probably not him.

thats terribly lame. really. i mean, i guess stencils are an art, but to me, graffiti loses its credibility when you are basically making your piece in the comfort of home and then just running out and smacking it on in seconds out in public. it take real balls to go out and actually do a piece while looking for cops and avoiding trouble.

He fired a shot across the bow of the S.S. Corrupt Capitalist Elite. He gave notice that no bastion of the establishment is safe from the simmering rage of the overprivileged anarcho-situationists armed with their stolen spray paint.
You think it's a coincidence that equity markets are moving up today; now that Sub-Commander Borf is safely incarcerated? Joe Kernen called it the Borf-Bounce.

It does my heart good to see a reference to Joe Kernen on this board- it means I am not the only member of the "indie-yuppie establishment" who lurks here. Can't wait for the next property value thread.

i was about to ask who Joe Kernan was....too lazy to do a search...probably some republican asshole though.
-
actually he is a financial news reporter on CNBC - and probably one of the funniest men on television in my opinion
Then again I am just a renter in this fair city not landed gentry like a lot of bordies, so I need to pay attention to the market so I can hope to catch up.

HAHAHAH. It's pretty obvious to me you were never 18; or if you were, you were too busy dicking around with your high school investment club porfolios. ..as for street art, it's no less or more important that contemporary music. Is the banging I hear more minds slamming shut? Perhaps the 930 club forum is too "juvenile" for many of you these days.
BTW: Wash Post does not allow "links" to full articles. You can only "subscribe" by opening an account. Borf is the name of the taggers best friend who committed suicide two years ago. No matter who mentioned "suicide" , teen-aged suicides are sad to many of us...

while you may be right, this particular street art is the contemporary music equivalent to 50 Cent.

seriously, stencils when doing graffiti is like, cheating, its weak. its like lip-synching at a show, or a DJ with a pre-mixed CDR. if you can't go out and perform on the spot then maybe he should be a stiff boring studio artist for some website or something.
I used to paint a little and i knew many kids in graffiti crews and stenciling was NOT something anyone with "talent" ever did.
