according to one authoritative source on All Things Relevant Today™, DC people spend an inordinate amount of time smelling their own farts.

That's just a polite way of saying "DC people are all full of shit"...which is true, very true.

i think that this phenomenon is unique to DC, and it bothers the shit out of me.  don't get me wrong, i do my thing... but when you're stuck behind the folks posted up on the railing at M.I.A. who have stood completely still for the entire show (not even a head bob), it makes ya wonder...

lolz

i love when people try to make these arguments ... you REALLY think that dc is the only place where people don't always dance a lot?  REALLY?

hoya, i didn't realize that i needed to qualify my comment and use of "unique" by stating that i haven't been EVERYwhere in the world to experience live music, nor have i conducted a formal study.  but based on my limited show-going experience in the US (coast-to-coast, north & south) and having grown up here, in terms of appearing to be entertained/moved, DC fucking sucks.  sorry!

dancey shows have an energy gradient peaking at the stage and laming out at the rails.  that's why i asked christine moritz in another thread where she stood when she griped about the most recent show.  if you were in the first ten layers of people (maybe much further back), i could not see, the dance action was non-stop.  if you cared to dance rather to comment on dancing, or lack of, you would have secured a spot closer to the stage.  it doesn't take a dc phd or dual ms to figure that one out.  you're basically critiquing the music scene from the elderly / leisure section.

and why the hell would you be in the balcony if you wanted to dance?  there's always space on the floor, and you can usually squeeze up stage right to the first 10-15 rows or so without screwing other people over

my gosh.

 1) i did dance... i danced like crazy (while respecting those around me) and enjoyed my friends' company
 2) other people not dancing doesn't affect my enjoyment
 3) if i wanted to be packed in the crowd up front, i would have

i was making an observation.  it's a general feeling i get from dc crowds.  i'm not alone in FEELING this way.

perhaps "bother" is the wrong word.  it CONFUSES me how people can resist moving, or not feel compelled to move.  that is all.

Some people prefer writing to talking.  Some people are introverted rather than extroverted.  Hope that helps.

I remember going to the WAMA awards years ago, at the Bayou (which tells you how long ago it was.)   Some of the Dischord crew were there, for reasons I remember not... anyway it was striking how they all stood there in the classic harDCore pose of standing rigidly, arms folded (or rubbing chin) as a local Zydeco band played its infectious groove.  I don't care if that's not your favorite genre, if you don't move your ass when that accordion strikes up there's something wrong with you...

but back to the original topic, one of the things we like is thrift store shopping (http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexdc/305195294/)

Sure, where you're located during a show and the crowd energy that's around you affects your perception of the show.  But it doesn't affect it to the degree of completely making or breaking the show.

At the M.I.A. show, my friend and I started on the floor toward the front, near one of the bars.  We got tired of being jostled by pushy/obnoxious types, and decided to move to the balcony where it was less crowded.

With a sufficiently compelling performer, I think you'd find the show compelling no matter where you were located.

believe that just because they can disobey pedestrian go/stop signals at night when there is less traffic, that the same rules apply during the day, when it's like a game of frogger.

ride bikes in the streets, not knowing/caring that the same rules for cars apply to their "i have too many dui(s) on my record for a car" asses.

think that the pea coat is the only fucking winter jacket in existance.

thinking that being draped over like a fucking homeless looking slob on your bar stool, ready to have your liver checked into rehab, is really not cool . . . unless you're at a adams morgan/georgetown bar where people think it's indie cool to tell people that they can't wear ball caps EVER DUDE . . . but would slap you silly if you dare tried to tell them that emo star tattoos were not allowed.

I was listening to a Big O & Dukes Podcast about why DC sucks.  Check it out on iTunes.  Basically, DC sucks because it is expensive and it doesn't have much to offer.  While other cities are also expensive, you get what you pay for and have better public transportation and hotter women.  The best part of the podcast is when they talk about trying to park in Adam's Morgan and not get towed.  Check it out, it is hilarious.
