Title: Mark your calendars / Arcade Fire
Post by: Barcelona on December 10, 2004, 08:04:00 pm
Arcade Fire - Jan 30, 9:30 Club

My apologies for not posting it in the Just Announced or in the Arcade Fire threads, but this is the best band I have heard in a long, long time.

what's the story with this band?

Am I the only person in the free world who is much underwhelmed by this band. Granted I have only heard about 8 songs I have downloaded but they are not speaking to me and I am someone who loves Talking Heads and a lot of the other bands that I hear them compared to...maybe the live experience is better...someone convince me...

Either you like the band or you don't, I guess. Funeral is one of my top 10 albums of 2004. The theme of death and loss weaved throughout the  album is done in a way that makes it thought-provoking rather than outright morbid.

If you're on the fence, go to the show and make up your own mind. I'm not sure why you'd want someone to convince you otherwise. It's just music.  :)

There are quite a few board members that are unimpressed with this band. Also, the more popular they get, the more criticism they will receive everywhere and in this board as well. Still, I would think that if you like Talking Heads or bands like Pavement or the Pixies there is a possibility that you would like this band (their music is unpredictable). I think their "Funeral" album is great and it reminds me a lot of Talking Heads, one of the best bands ever.

Maybe this has been said somewhere else, but the singer reminds me of a cross between Conor Oberst and the singer of The Walkmen. I have only heard the album twice and liked it more the second time. It's a slow grower. I will probably go to the live show to see them for myself.

FYI, Arcade Fire tickets are already on sale at tickets.com.

Which brings up a point -- what's the deal with the club calendar and tickets? They seem to be dropping the ball a bit of late...

I just came back from a trip to the Pacific NW where I saw the Weakerthans and Arcade Fire. I had only heard a few songs by Arcade Fire and was somewhat underwhelmed.

BUT!!! Their live show is a totally different story. I came back a convert. These guys are f**king awesome live. They are so much fun and so good at what they do. They sound better live. Everything is better live.

I'm thinking David Byrne fronting Broken Social Scene. They're badass, hype be damned.

I'm impressed that they completely skipped the black cat and started at 930, I was pegging them for a black cat show for sure.

Just bought a ticket.  I can't wait.  I constantly listen to their performance on www.kexp.org....so (http://www.kexp.org....so) good.  So good, they almost got the radio station permanently banned b/c they were so loud.

you think there is any chance they are selling them at the 9:30 box office since they're already available online?

If Bright Eyes is any indication, they're selling Arcade Fire tix at the box office.

What's going on here, some weird quasi-pre-sale for astute board members?

Not just board members, but anyone who visits the Tickets.com page for 9:30 tickets (http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?organ_val=3595).

Seems so. But why the lag between tickets.com and the "official announcement" at 9:30.com/City Paper ad? It's been several weeks for Bright Eyes, so it's not just a case of "we announce on Thursdays".

I couldn't see Talking Heads at the time they filmed Stop Making Sense, this is one of the things I regret the most, however, for some reason I have the impression that seeing the Arcade Fire live will somehow compensate for that.

Apparently they sold out the Troubadour in LA for two nights in record time. Friends in LA said that tickets were sold out before they even went on sale to the general public.

They also sold out the KEXP Yule Benefit show in Portland and that had to be around 700 people. They're also doing multiple nights in SF at the Great American Music Hall which is also larger than the Black Cat. So the 9:30 Club makes sense.

I think we're going to go to see the show in Philly on the Monday night as well. I can't get over how much fun they are to watch live. It's great to see a young band with that much enthusiasm (and, at the same time, humility).

this is unreal .... are there really 1200 arcade fire fans in this city hardcore enough that they knew about this show before it was up on the 930 website (which took forever to do)??

i'm pissed, and i need two tickets.

I have a feeling it may be a combination of DC-area fans and fans along the East Coast traveling to DC for the show. The shows scheduled for NYC and Philly have also sold out, so there may be an overlap.

I don't know if any of you are south of DC like myself, but there's a virtually unannounced show (I don't see it on the band's website) at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC that still has tickets on sale. That's probably like a 4 hour drive from DC, but it's a Friday and even with gas you'd probably save money over buying ridiculously scalped tickets.

 Just a heads up.

Who are you pissed at, the 930 club?  You seem to frequent the board fairly often and knew about the show last month.

I think it went up on the website on 12/22.  That was about a week and a half ago.  When did it actually sellout?  I didn't notice until yesterday morning. I'm not very surprised at all though. They topped everyone's "Best of 2004" lists and all reports say their live show is even better. This was guaranteed to be a hot ticket.

On the other hand, The Scissor Sisters also sold out well in advance.  That surprised me a bit.

maybe a bit optimistic...

but i can see them adding a second early show.

the show is on a sunday. they're not scheduled to play either of the two previous nights (they'll be rested). and the only other "two shows in one night" night for them is in L.A....on 1/16....a sunday.

 let's hope.

(i'm kinda upset at myself for not jumping on this sooner.)

maybe we can contact them and ask nicely? or beg seth?...(not sure how that all works)

"Rested"

That is very funny. As if it will take a heckuva lot of energy to get up at noon and play a 40 minute show later in the evening.

Well, I see that I lost on this one -- as I knew I would because I just couldn't get by the club in December before I left the country for 3 weeks. Should any board member have spare tickets, p.m. me...though I'm still in Cape Town (and am heading right to Phoenix when I get back until Jan 17).  Trust me, if you save me a ticket, I will pay, buy you a drink and either chat with you or ignore you based on your preference.

Grazi, and happy new year to all...

Since that other thread about the Arcade Fire is simply ridiculous, I thought I would report here.

I saw them last night, and while the album took some time to get used to, the live show was something else.  Crazy energy all the way throughout.  A relatively short set as expected, but it was unbelievable.  I haven't felt this way about a show since the first time I saw The Flaming Lips or the Polyphonic Spree.  It's one of those things you can talk about all day and never give the proper description of (although this guy was a bit over zealous, he does a decent job - free live tracks too)  (http://www.bradleysalmanac.com/2004/11/live-arcade-fire.htm) .  You'll just have to see it to appreciate it.  I can confirm that I heard a few "Holy Shit!"'s and "Are you fucking kidding me?" and at least one person in our group said that it was the best show she's ever been too.

For those of you that got tickets - enjoy.  For those that didn't, get down to the club night of and try to get a cheap one.

They deserve the critics sucking their dicks right now.

Testify!!  :)  It was their live show that won me over. I don't know if Win's brother is going to be at the 9:30 Club show (word is that he's going back to school for this semester). When I saw them in Portland/Seattle, he seemed to be the one with the most energy.

But I fear the sophomore jink/hipness backlash. Both seem to be inevitable. I hope they enjoy this ride while it lasts.

Is there a limit of tickets you can get at the 9:30 or at tickets.com? If so, that would seem like a good starting point.

I did the same. I remember going to other shows, David Byrne and Interpol the ones that come to my ming right now, and being able to get a ticket just before the show around the club. However, with the Arcade Fire, I didn't want this uncertainty going on until Sunday night.

Don't count on it.  They've only got one album and even with two covers, it was just about an hour.

But, it was the most enjoyable hour with my clothes on that I've had in some time!

A friend of mine bought tickets on ebay yesterday....I would have tried for a ticket at the show, but she had to see it.  So I'll be there.

And, alas, I'll probably miss the afterparty -- got a BIG new job, and it is keeping me BUSY.

Hey,
I am not sure how to go about this so I will just shoot. In theory, lets say that Chimbley will not be back in time to see Arcade or BrightEyes and her friend has one extra to each show. How would that friend best assure that that extra go to a board regular who just missed out? Remember this is all THEORY - like communism -   ;)

Awesome. What an impressive performance. Amazingly enough, they actually sound better live than on their album. Seven musicians took the stage at the 9:30 Club, playing an eclectic assortment of musical instruments: acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin?, keyboards, two violins, accordion, upright bass, electric bass, snare drum, full drum kit, tambourines, jingle bells, xylophone, mouth organ, harmonica, and all manner of impromptu percussion. The Arcade Fire attacked the audience with exuberance and enthusiasm. For a band with only one album, they played an impressive (almost) 90 minutes to an enthralled crowd. In between songs, after the applause had died down, you could hear a pin drop in the 9:30 Club. At one point, the bassist remarked that we were the most polite audience they had encountered on this tour. I yelled back "Thank you!" which garnered more than a few chuckles. When all was played and done, the concert was definitely one of the best concert experiences I have had at the 9:30 Club in quite some time.

Did anyone catch the set list? If you did, please post it. Thanks!

Amazing show for such a young band, carrying out limited material to 88 minutes and doing a hell of a job with it.  And they exited through the crowd, still singing and playing all the way; I had the good fortune of being one of the people who ended up forming the aisle for them.  One of the best shows I've seen, period.

I don't fully remember the order of the setlist, but they played the entirety of Funeral, the songs "No Cars Go" and "Headlights Look Like Diamonds" from their EP, and new songs titled "Intervention" (which was fantastic) and "Burning Bridges."

They definitely did not disappoint last night.  I saw them at dinner before the show and told them how excited I was to see them.  Of course, I'm probably the 1,000 person to tell them this on their tour.....

easily the best show I have seen at 9:30 in my limited amount of time here. Also made the crowd from the Saturday night show look like tailgaters at some college football game when you consider that last night you could sense that the crowd was holding its collective breath so that they could hear every note. Great show.

I'm still amazed at how quiet the crowd was.  That, combined with the "no smoking" rule, made for quite the pleasant evening.

Terrific show from start to finish.  Their CD does not do them justice.  Outstanding live band.

I wondered why it was so non-smoky! was that a band request?

great show, a musical collective in the truest sense - I think everyone must have played about 3 different instruments by nights end

maybe its because it was a school night, maybe its just DC, but yes the crowd were very 'polite', and I think the band were being polite by calling us polite

things livened up a little following the admonition however and the last song was amazing

thanks again to tbmtt and chimbley for the ticket

anyone else go to saint-ex afterwards?

you didn't miss anything special. napoleon dynamite-looking dude and the drummer (i think) showed up with their laptop and made some song selections. started off with an aphex twin song...and it devolved into a random 80s set (cure, smiths, prince, michael jackson).

surprisingly enough, it wasn't too crowded either.

that encore at the show was excellent ("the backseat" was probably my favorite performance of the night).

I agree with all points.  We were stunned by the quiet as well.

And, I hadn't noticed the "no smoking" signs on the doors coming in, and a guy near me lit a cigarette and before his first puff was complete, a staff person was on him like a bee on honey saying (quite sternly, in my opinion, as it is after all a divergence from the club's normal policy), "Put that out.  Put that out NOW."  At first I thought the guy must have lit up a doobie!   ;)   Makes for an awfully pleasant night....

great show ... not exactly a transcendent experience, but i had high hopes ... definitely worth the scalped price i paid ... feedback kinda sucked a few times, but i guess that's hard to avoid when you have two dozen people on the stage ...

i agree about the crowd, it was QUIET, especially between songs, people started pogoing around towards the end of the set though ... no smoking was very strange, i didn't see the signs, so i walked in and lit up, like i usually do, and suddenly saw this bouncer barrelling towards me, grabbing my arm and telling me to "put that shit out" ... i told him it was a cigarette, not a joint, but that didn't go over too well ...

the backbar was like a smoking lounge at an airport, i think i inhaled a pack while i was down there in between sets to smoke ...

opener was final fantasy (i.e., some canadian dude named owen), who was alright, but really gimmicky and he got old quiiick for me ... kind of like an indie howie day with a violin instead of a guitar ... started every song by playing and recording the backing tracks, then looped them throughout the song with his foot pedals ... songs kinda sucked ...

bags, that was probably me (although i'm sure that same scene was replayed dozens of times throughout the night) ... i had my columbia heights t-shirt on ...

another note, the show really reminded me of the broken social scene show at black cat last year, not really the music, but the whole canadian-ness of it and the dozen or so people on the stage (with the opener playing with the headliner)

i was there too...we actually got a couple of the last seats in the place thanx to k8teebug who drove us at saintex right after the show.  :D  it took them forever to show up...wasn't it like 12:45 before they took over the dj booth?  i was happy  to hear the aphex twin, but didn't stay too long after that.  i really wished it had been on saturday instead of a work night.

i thought their performance was excellent...Laika was totally schizophrenic and showcased the band's energy perfectly...band members in motorcycle helmets drumming on the monitors and climbing from the stage to the balcony. just amazing.

and what's with those f'ckers in the audience shouting for them to play talking heads songs?  jesus christ man...the freebird thing at shows is bad enough but since when is it cool to go to a show and yell at the band to play someone else's music?

I also thought it was cool that they climbed up to the balcony and then jumped.  Although I'm suprised they didn't break their ankles....
Aside from the 12 dollar dc cab ride that should've been 4, it was a terrific evening.

I think they were probably alluding to Talking Heads being an influence on Arcade Fire. Not like their music is that original.

Title: Re: Mark your calendars / Arcade Fire
Post by: joz on January 31, 2005, 12:40:00 pm
rhett must be feeling fiesty today...although they do hold a resemblence to the talking heads (mainly because of win's david byrne-like vocals), what band isn't derivative of someone else?  pick any band and you can come up with their closest predecessor.  it's musical evolution...all bands/musicians fit somewhere on the web and can be linked to others before and after.

so, the arcade fire made the mistake of including a talking heads cover in their setlist at every live show. people expect it now and they potentially reinforced the associations to them. so what tho? perhaps they wanted to pay homage to a band from which they get their inspiration.  still doesn't make sense that people would pay to see the arcade fire but would rather see them play a talking heads song.  it's like going to see celine dion and shouting for her to sing gypsies tramps and theives.

Yeah, staff reaction to and handling of smoking was a tad inappropriate -- I've been to the club over 100 times, so I'd assume I'd be able to smoke -- it was a DIVERGENCE from policy, most people probably just needed to be told, not intimidated.

This must be the place (http://www.bradleysalmanac.com/2004/11/live-arcade-fire.htm)  from Boston (halfway down the page).

is anyone in the band pregnant? or do they just not like smoke? seems like a pretty high-and-mighty move to pull. but i bet it was nice to come home from a show and not have your clothes stink up the whole apartment/bedroom/etc.

does the club always honor this sort of request? or just when acts like arcade fire and pj harvey pack 'em in real, real tight.

And, of course, that would have been the perfect way to handle -- just a "no smoking in the club tonight" would have been dandy.

Thanks, thatguy -- an awfully small complaint in the scheme of things.  That's why we love the club!

Thanks for clarifying.  From your original post it seemed that you were wondering why the guys in the audience were asking for the Talking Heads in general.  I see now what you mean and likely would have been annoyed as well.

I too would have rather heard two new songs.  We got "Intervention" and not "Burning Bridges," but we also had two nights, so the other night likely got the other new song and a cover.

I stood outside for about 5 or 10 minutes before I went into the show and the ticket takers clearly said "no smoking tonight" to the people in line at least 3 or 4 times. And the staff at the merch table seemed to be very nice about pointing the policy out to people. It might have just been one staffer who was sick of repeating themselves. Although I don't smoke so maybe it didn't seem as harsh to me as it did to the smokers.

Yes.  I lived in DC from 96 to 2003 and made a few friends on this board before returning to CA.

thanks vansmack...was confused for a second there.  should've known that you weren't in the dc anymore from some of your other posts.

with regards to the smoking policy at last night's show, i'm a smoker and it really didn't kill me that i couldn't have a smoke during their set.  although it was kind of annoying that i had to go down into the oppressively hot and smoky backbar along with 30 or so fellow lepers (cough...i mean, smokers) just to have a C.

my friend did see a staffer blast someone on the way out of the show who was lighting up just before they exited the club (literally feet from the door).  that's a little excessive...i mean, what were they going to do, throw her out?  the show was over.  there are definitely a few staffers who have that holier than thou attitude.

Now you see, that's funny.  When that happens in CA, the staff doesn't have to say anything because at least 5-6 concert goers will ask the smoker "Seriously, would it have killed you wait 5 feet instead of blowing your smoke for the rest of us to walk through?"

Now you have to be 20 feet away from the door of the place before you can light up.

 It's all in the perspective.

not to piss on anybody's parade, but...

i thought the arcade fire were good, maybe even approaching very good, but certainly not brilliant, transcendent, nor even close to the best show i've seen recently. i suppose with all the ridiculous hype i've been hearing/reading for the past month or two, it was bound to be at least slightly disappointing. i think the talking heads comparison is more apt regarding win's vocals, but the band itself doesn't sound too much like the talking heads. i did get a broken social scene vibe, and to be honest, i'm not sure how i feel about all these bands recently who have six to ten  members (73 if you're the polyphonic spree) all doing mostly the same thing. perhaps i'm old and jaded, but i think neutral milk hotel and olivia tremor control pioneered this approach and perfected it. what i missed last night were memorable melodies.

this isn't to say that i thought the arcade fire were bad; i enjoyed their set but had trouble fathoming why so many think this band is doing something interesting and moving. i wasn't moved at all, except during one song.

i saw the last half of final fantasy, and i actually enjoyed his set. i don't think his looping of the violin was a gimmick at all and he used it to great effect. his singing sounded very delicately british at times and i liked when he screamed/yelled into the violin pick-up. i could see potential if he had an actual band to flesh out the sound.

as for the smoking policy, we must have had roughly 30 signs placed throughout the inside and the outside of the club. as doorstaph, i take great pride in not intimidating patrons and will never be rude to someone smoking inside when they're not supposed to, unless they refuse to put out the cigarette. people forget these trivial things. i always deal with that at the warehouse next door, which has a no smoking policy at all times.

did he have OCD?  that screaming was a bit bizzare, and he was doing all sorts of compulsive stuff during the arcade fire set, it was making me uncomfortable ...

hahaha, maybe he did have OCD. i like outsider art, and that guy has potential. i think he'll get somewhere if he abuses that violin and sings tales of his depraved fantasies.

whenever a band requests a no smoking show, we post tons of signs inside and outside the club.  we also tell the bag checkers to remind anyone thst has a pack in their bag, or anyone coming to the door smoking.  the coffee bar will tell people if they buy a pack.  we take up all of the ashtrays.  when all of this fails, we politely inform anyone smoking of the policy, including those 5 feet from the door.  we often offer the backbar as an option, but sometimes you'll have to go outside.

personally, i hope we go no smoking soon.  all of my clothes smell like smoke, and i find the smell offensive.

Three cheers for a non-smoking venue! Crowded shows will instantly become more tolerable.

I understand there will be people against such ban. But think about it, a music venue is the sort of place where smoking isn't a must and I'm sure it would not detract from the atmosphere.

I thought the show was incredible. I've been trying to think of how to characterize it. I think I enjoyed it because it seemed like the band played because they had to. As if it was some elemental compulsion to make music to express themselves. There was an urgency to their playing. I loved every minute. Laika's craziness was a highlight. I also thought the whole encore was truly excellent. I was pretty close to the front and was entertained by the bass player's moves. I look forward to seeing them again!

And I really enjoyed Final Fantasy, too. It's not easy to loop sound layers live and carry it off. With a self-depricating sense of humor. The shouting was a nice surprise. I'm glad the crowd was so respectful and into it. The whole show definitely raised my opinion of DC crowds.

umm, i'd politely disagree ... but we've had this discussion before, heavy drinking = smoking, its just that simple ... i wouldn't go to a random show on a tuesday night if i knew i would have to run down to the backbar to have a cigarette, and i know many people feel the same way ... it's a club, people smoke, most people either realize this as a fact of life or go to really cool places like clarendon ballroom or montgomery county, woohoo!

thatguy, i agree, signs were everywhere and it should have been obvious, i just didn't catch it when i walked in, not a big deal.

This summer I saw the Polyphonic Spree at Irving Plaza in NYC. It wasn't until the end of the show when I realized there was something missing. I sniffed my shirt, and lo and behold, it still smelled dryer-fresh! It was still packed but the lack of smoke made the packed house much more tolerable. I just don't think smoking would be missed as much at a concert venue. People were still drinking, it's just a matter of adjustment.

Actually, alcohol sales in bars have increased in Montgomery County since the smoking ban went into place.

Perhaps heavy drinking=smoking for you, the person with the cigarette problem, but it heavy drinking does not equal smoking for the 80% of the population who are non-smokers.

an example that i used when we had this same exact discussion previously was the Trash Can Sinatras show last fall ... i honestly could give a shit about them, but i was in the mood to hear some smiths-y stuff so i came out after dinner that night ... if i knew i couldn't smoke there, however, i would have stayed at home, smoked a joint and put on "cake" and then "god save the queen" ... now that i write that, that sounds like a better night than falling asleep to trash can, especially if i couldn't smoke a cigarette ...

here's the post's take on the show. kinda echoes snailhook's thoughts. i wasn't there, but it sounds about right. the record is very good, but there were probably a dozen or so that i thought were better last year. like snailhook was saying, the fact that they have lots of people playing lots of different instruments, not to mention the fact that they are on merge, just evokes lots of neutral milk hotel comparisons, at least in my mind, and that's just one band you don't want to go up against.

 Arcade Fire

The 9:30 club stage seemed too small for the eight musicians of the Arcade Fire, whose Sunday night concert operated according to the formula that constant movement and shouting in unison create a powerful show. The group's music centered on the beats: Three simultaneous rhythm guitars drilled power chords that were accented by pounding drums and the yelping vocals of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. Two violinists filled in the gaps, bringing out melodies in songs that were otherwise just percussive.

Most of the musicians rotated instruments like a holiday gift exchange, sometimes throwing a tambourine from person to person between songs. But not everyone played an instrument: During most songs, one or two members of the group would grab a pair of drumsticks and pound on anything in sight, even wearing motorcycle helmets for extra protection.

These energetic gimmicks won over the capacity audience more often than not: By the end of the set, the crowd was clapping along to the bouncy rhythm of "Rebellion (Lies)" and pounding fists in the air as "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" disintegrated into musical mayhem. Despite the energy and chaos, the songs weren't very memorable, and Butler's vocals were murky and often unintelligible.

The last song of the night, "In the Backseat," concluded with all eight members wandering through the downstairs audience, waving their instruments in the air, oooh-ing the song's final chorus in unison as they made their way upstairs and through the balcony crowd back to their dressing rooms.

The group's haphazard movements on stage were fascinating to watch, and it's a miracle there were no collisions all night. While its simplistic musical style and histrionic vocals had little substance, the Arcade Fire is certainly to be admired for its extreme and unwavering physicality.

from my favorite comedy set of all time:

"There's a guy- I don't know if you've heard about this guy, he's been on the news a lot lately. There's a guy- he's English, I don't think we should hold that against him, but apparently this is just his life's dream because he is going from country to country. He has a senate hearing in this country coming up in a couple of weeks. And this is what he wants to do. He wants to make the warnings on the packs bigger. Yeah! He wants the whole front of the pack to be the warning. Like the problem is we just haven't noticed yet. Right? Like he's going to get his way and all of the sudden smokers around the world are going to be going, "Yeah, Bill, I've got some cigarettes. HOLY SHIT! These things are bad for you! Shit, I thought they were good for you! I thought they had Vitamin C in them and stuff!" You fucking dolt! Doesn't matter how big the warnings are. You could have cigarettes that were called the warning. You could have cigarrets that come in a black pack, with a skull and a cross bone on the front, called tumors and smokers would be lined up around the block going, "I can't wait to get my hands on these fucking things! I bet you get a tumor as soon as you light up! Numm Numm Numm Numm Numm" Doesn't matter how big the warnings are or how much they cost. Keep raising the prices, we'll break into your houses to get the fucking cigarettes, ok!?"

Wow...all this debate about smoking.

The Arcade Fire requests that all their shows be non-smoking. I believe that Win has a severe allergy to smoke and it really screws up his singing if there's smoking in the venue.

Now...having said that, what a fucking show! They pulled out all the stops on Sunday night. It didn't hurt that Win's parents were in town and that Will had flown in for the show (along with Philly and Conan). I think it really pumped them up for the evening.

I really get off on the energy they exhibit on stage. I wonder how long they can keep it up. For some reason, I can't help but think they'll get snakebit with their sophomore effort and back off a bit.

BTW - Went to the Philly show last night and it wasn't quite as good as DC (but still damn fine). They did have a harp player for Backseat and their set was one song shorter. I have a feeling that they'll be playing Backseat on Conan tonite. That wouldn't be my choice to showcase their talents, especially given that they'll only get about 3 minutes. We'll have to see how that transpires.

That might just be because more people who don't smoke are going out in Montgomery County because they know they won't have to deal with smoke.  There's not necessarily a corelation between the amount of alcohol consumed and smoking unless you break it down per person.  My thoughts in the two times I've been back since the ban is that there's more traffic, which would naturally equal more consumption.

That being said, I'm still all for the ban.

Those arguments don't work anymore.  It's been ten years in a state as large as California, with neighborhoods of all makes and models, and you rarely hear of anyone who complains about the ban any longer - in any neighborhood, rich or poor.  Businesses have loved it - by far they've reaped rewards they never imagined.  As was pointed out earlier, alcohol sales took no hit (even increased) and smoking is allowed outside in a designated smoking area.  They still sell their packs at outrageous prices and more people are in the bar - who loses?

but you wonder how many businesses may have folded and then new ones sprouted  up during that time.

think of some bars, if they had bad sales for the initial 6 months of the ban...that could be enough to send them out of business.

really , i dont care and i certainly dont wanna argue with vansmack cause hes a nice guy, haha.

either way, ever since bans have been going on, whenever i am in a bar that is no smoking, by 12:30am its almost always smoking anyway (this is NYC, Phoenix and San Diego only though)

on another note, i remember being home when the Toronto smoking ban went into effect last year.

it was funny because the bar we were at had like 5 cigarette reps there handing out oodles of free smokes, and the owner allowed us to smoke til closing (even though the ban was midnight). apparently not all bars were that "nice" because by 12:45am the place was PACKED with people who left other bars that made everyone put out the smokes at the stroke of 12.

the smoking ban probably isnt so bad in Cali, but when its -15C outside in Toronto...its kind of a son of a bitch to step outside!

I just don't think smokers get it.

You can use all the hurts business/helps business arguments you want. But the bottom line is that secondhand smoke is harmful to other human beings. If you don't care about your own health, at least have some compassion for your fellow human beings and refrain from doing something that does harm to others.

i dont think its worried of actually "catching" the cold. but its just COLD.  plus with all those gloves, hats and jackets.

my REAL argument (apparently you are trying to force it out of me, even though i thought i was just telling a story) is that i should be allowed to let people smoke in my business if i want to. shouldnt be up to the government....though that doesnt go with my socialistic views.

Or your democratic ones, because it's majority rule, and the majority say no smoking in public places in CA.

And for your business, private property rights aren't inalienable.  There are other safety and health regulations that must be followed in all businesses and this is just another.  Your workers must wash their hands after using the restroom and your patrons must refrain from smoking in the place of business.

No one is saying you can't smoke.  You just can't smoke in a public place.

SUITED MAN
       Here you go.

             DANTE
       What's this?

             SUITED MAN
A fine, for five hundred dollars.

             DANTE
       WHAT?

             TRAINER
       Five hundred bucks? What for?

             SUITED MAN
For violation of New Jersey Statute
       Section Two A, number one-seventy
       slash fifty-one: Any person who
sells or makes available tobacco or
       tobacco-related products to persons
under the age of eighteen is
       regarded as disorderly.

                            99.

             DANTE
       What are you talking about?

             SUITED MAN
       According to the NJAC-the New
       Jersey Administrative Code, section
       eighteen, five, slash twelve point
five-a fine of no less than two
hundred and fifty dollars is to be
       leveled against any person reported
       selling cigarettes to a minor.

             DANTE
       I didn't do that!

             SUITED MAN
You said you were here all day?

             DANTE
Yeah, but I didn't sell cigarettes
       to any kids!

             SUITED MAN
An angry mother called the state
       division of taxation and complained
that the man working at Quick Stop
       Convenience sold her five-year-old
       daughter cigarettes today at around
       four o'clock. Division of taxation
calls the State Board of Health,
and they send me down here to issue
a fine. You say you were working
all day, hence the fine is yours.
It's doubled due to the incredibly
       young age of the child.

             DANTE
But I didn't sell cigarettes to any
       kid!

             TRAINER
       To a five-year-old kid? What a
       scumbag!

             HEATHER
       That's sick, Dante.

             DANTE
I didn't sell cigarettes to any
       kids! I swear!

                            100.

             SUITED MAN
The due date is on the bottom. This
summons cannot be contested in any
court of law. Failure to remit
before the due date will result in
       a charge of criminal negligence,
and a warrant will be issued for
your arrest. Have a nice day.

The SUITED MAN exits, with DANTE trying to follow.

             DANTE
But I didn't sell cigarettes to any
       kids! Hey!

             TRAINER
          (takes back the card)
Forget it. I don't want to deal
with a guy that sells cigarettes to
       a five-year-old.
          (to HEATHER)
Can I offer you a ride somewhere?

             HEATHER
       Sure. How about the beach?

             TRAINER
I like the way you think.

A SMALL CROWD gathers around the ACTIVIST as he orates. It
has become something of a rally.

                            10.

             ACTIVIST
       You're spending what? Twenty,
thirty dollars a week on cigarettes.

             LISTENER 1
       Forty.

             LISTENER 2
       Fifty-three.

             ACTIVIST
       Fifty-three dollars. Would you pay
someone that much money every week
to kill you? Because that's what
you're doing now, by paying for the
       so-called privilege to smoke!

             LISTENER 3
       We all gotta go sometime...

             ACTIVIST
It's that kind of mentality that
       allows this cancer-producing
industry to thrive. Of course we're
all going to die someday, but do we
have to pay for it? Do we have to
       actually throw hard-earned dollars
on a counter and say, "Please,
       please, Mister Merchant of Death,
sir; please sell me something that
will give me bad breath, stink up
my clothes, and fry my lungs."

             LISTENER 1
It's not that easy to quit.

             ACTIVIST
Of course it's not; not when you
       have people like this mindless
cretin so happy and willing to sell
       you nails for your coffin!

             DANTE
       Hey, now wait a sec...

             ACTIVIST
Now he's going to launch into his
rap about how he's just doing his
       job; following orders.

                            11.

             ACTIVIST (CONT'D)
Friends, let me tell you about
another bunch of hate mongers that
       were just following orders: they
       were called Nazis, and they
       practically wiped a nation of
       people from the Earth...just like
       cigarettes are doing now! Cigarette
smoking is the new Holocaust, and
those that partake in the practice
of smoking or sell the wares that
promote it are the Nazis of the
nineties! He doesn't care how many
people die from it! He smiles as
you pay for your cancer sticks and
       says, "Have a nice day."

             DANTE
I think you'd better leave now.

             ACTIVIST
You want me to leave? Why? Because
somebody is telling it like it is?
       Somebody's giving these fine people
       a wake-up call?!

             DANTE
       You're loitering in here, and
       causing a disturbance.

             ACTIVIST
       You're the disturbance, pal! And
       here...
          (slaps a dollar on
          the counter)
       I'm buying some...what's
       this?...Chewlie's Gum. There. I'm
no longer loitering. I'm a customer,
a customer engaged in a discussion
       with other customers.

             LISTENER 2
          (to DANTE)
Yeah, now shut up so he can speak!

             ACTIVIST
Oh, he's scared now! He sees the
threat we present! He smells the
changes coming, and the loss of
       sales when the nonsmokers finally
       demand satisfaction. We demand the
       right to breathe cleaner air!

                            12.

             LISTENER 3
       Yeah!

             ACTIVIST
We'd rather chew our gum than
       embrace slow death! Let's abolish
       this heinous practice of sucking
poison, and if it means ruffling
the feathers of a convenience store
       idiot, then so be it!

             DANTE
       That's it, everybody out.

             ACTIVIST
We're not moving! We have a right,
       a constitutional right, to assemble
       and be heard!

             DANTE
       Yeah, but not in here.

             ACTIVIST
What better place than this? To
stamp it out, you gotta start at
       the source!

             DANTE
Like I'm responsible for all the
       smokers!

             ACTIVIST
The ones in this town, yes! You
       encourage their growth, their habit.
You're the source in this area, and
we're going to shut you down for
       good! For good, cancer-merchant!

The small crowd begins to chant and jeer in DANTE's face.

             CROWD
       Cancer merchant! Cancer merchant!
       Cancer merchant!

VERONICA enters and surveys the mess. The CROWD throws
cigarettes at DANTE, pelting him in the face. Suddenly, a
loud blast is heard, and white powder explodes over the
 throng. Everyone turns to face...

VERONICA as she stands in one of the freezer cases, holding
 a fire extinguisher.

             VERONICA
       Who's leading this mob?

                            13.

The CROWD looks among themselves. Someone points to O.C.

             SOMEONE
       That guy.

The ACTIVIST carries his briefcase surreptitiously toward
 the door.

             VERONICA (O.C.)
       Freeze.

VERONICA jumps off the freezer case, training the nozzle of
 the extinguisher on the ACTIVIST.

             VERONICA
       Let's see some credentials.

He reaches into his briefcase. She pokes the extinguisher
 nozzle at him, warningly.

             VERONICA
       Slowly...

He pulls out a business card and hands it to her. She reads
 it.

             VERONICA
       You're a Chewlie's Gum
       representative?

 He nods.

             VERONICA
And you're stirring up all this
       antismoking sentiment
       to...what?...sell more gum?

 He nods again.

             VERONICA
          (through gritted teeth)
       Get out of here.

He quickly flees. She blasts him with more chemical as he
 exits.

             VERONICA
          (to the crowd)
And you people: Don't you have jobs
to go to? Get out of here and go
       commute.

The CROWD sheepishly exits, one by one, offering apologetic
glances. DANTE tries to regain his composure.

In fact, I've found that I tend to drink less in a smoke saturated environment because it makes me so sick that I can't stomach the alcohol added to my system."
oh my god, cry me a river.....

at least you save some money on alcohol

Listen Sonny Boy and Whiner Saxa, some people will fight tooth and coffin nail to defend their addictions. What I posted was a fact of my life and many other non-smokers side of the story. We have rights too!!! I use to be a smoker so I do know both sides of the story and the smoker's side negatively impacts the non-smoker's side far more so than the other way around.

And that river is a river of tears because of all of the fucking smoke in my eyes! If you want it to stop, than stop polluting my breathing space.

so my brother calls me last night from the arcade fire show in ny...he's like "listen"...i'm trying to make out the music through the roar of the crowd and the semi-shitty reception...i hear that distinct synthesizer riff...

sp: "they're playing 'this must be the place'?"
 my brother: "yeah"
 sp: "oh cool"

 mb: "david byrne is singing"

 oh.

he said the crowd went nuts when he walked onstage.

That's awesome.  I'm jealous.  I saw them on Conan though, and they were really good.  No David Byrne though.

I taped it. They played Laika. As usual for tv, the mix was bad, but the performance was great!

Haven't had time to read all the reviews in the board, this week I have been traveling back to Latin America and didn't have time to visit the board very frequently.

As for the show, I liked it (I have repeatedly said on the board that this album is the best thing I have heard in a long time, along with neil young's greendale). However, leaving the show I had the impression that the show missed something, maybe the crowd was too quiet, maybe I wasn't in the mood for a rock show (flu and a job interview the following day...), I thought the played really well, but was expecting something else, more crazyness, don't know? Still, if they come back to DC I will be there again and I hope to see them at the Primavera Festival in Barcelona this spring, talked to the singer for a couple of minutes, very nice guy.

As for the non smoking ban, I saw the signs at the main door when I was getting in. I myself am a smoker, not that I smoke too much, but a beer and rock music make up a pretty good situation to smoke. However, I actually liked the ban, wouldn't have any problem if it was banned at all shows.

I thought that it would look a little weird to the casual viewer because it's sooo out of context to do what they do for just one song.  But it was enjoyable for folks in the know.  The drum stick smacking the lead singer in the face was pretty cool too.

Really? I wasn't there so wouldn't know but I had seen that clip the other week. Maybe it was shot during the sound check.

But what I would like to know, with all of the people in that band, do you mean to tell me that that is the best singer that they could come up with?

it's probably sound-check ... you can see someone walking in front of the stage at the very beginning ...

this is just like suki's comment about interpol being too down-in-the-dumps, i wouldn't want to see interpol as a "happy" band, and i wouldn't want to see arcade fire with a "technically good" singer ... his voice is perfect because its completely raw and cracks with emotion ...
