Title: Shins Roll Call
Post by: Bags on February 10, 2004, 06:03:00 pm
Okay, let's try this again.

I'm not going Tuesday; will be in Red Room Wednesday about 9:30.  May wear my Barry shirt in honor of the poor sick bastard.

I'll be there tonight, snuggled right next to Lulu.  Hey Mark, maybe you won't get lost in the crowd like you did at the Ted Leo show and I'll get to say hello.

So now Markie's your little friend?    <img src="http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/carto1710.gif" alt=" - " />

And as for the shared birthday, I think it means you're blessed in some way you don't yet understand.

I made it through the rain
 I kept my world protected
I made it through the rain
I kept my point of view
I made it through the rain
 And found myself respected
 By the others who
 Got rained on too
 And made it through

When friends are hard to find
 And life seems so unkind
 Sometimes you feel so afraid

Be careful saying the word fabulous at the Black Cat. You never know what lip-stick wearing gay man may have taken a liking to you after seeing you in the bathroom.

Again, my predictions:

 1. A good show, but not a great show...just like when we saw them at CMJ in October.

 2. Just about the same songs played each night.

they went on at 11.05 and played for a bit over an hour. the sound was not great. it was perfect on some songs and way off on others. but they do have a fun, socal, beach sound. i actually think a pairing with the thrills at the 930 would be a nice combo. i skipped both openers so can't comment there.

Dont you wish you had bought tickets for both nights, so you could go back and hear the same exact songs with the sound done right?

I thought that the first half of the show was somewhat hit or miss but second half was really solid.  They seem to pick up the pacing of most of their songs and because of this a lot of them sound very similar. I know both discs really well and I still found myself thinking several times, "didn't they play this already?" Gone for Good is one hell of a song.

I thought the crowd was awful last night. I guess this is to be expected when you have a band that is loved by the college kids and hipsters and the cover is only $12. Very few people seemed to know the music and there was a hell of a lot of talking going on. I got in an argument with a stupid broad during New Slang who I told to stop talking...she told me that she was there to socialize--not listen to the music. She also said that she will be there for the second show and suggested that I not stand next to her again.

Sitting way in the back (love those comfy couches) everyone and his brother was talking. I think its cause their music is a little softer and mellower. Still, just wrong...

OK,

I'm about to pee my pants I'm so excited for the show tonight.  Does anyone have a set list for last night?

AllmyMoney, I think talking during new slang is reason enough to hit someone.

Also, Check this out, this guy has a really good live show from Austin posted here.  The show is from Nov 2003.

Also, important question since I've only been to one black cat show and it wasn't sold out... how crowded was the place, and what time would you suggest getting there?

 Thanks!

Looked crowded up front.  Plenty of room in the very back.  We got there at 10:00 and ended up pretty much even with the front of the soundboard, maybe 2/3 of the way back.  It would have been pretty easy to move up a few more feet, if we had wanted to.

When did the Black Cat get a coat check?  I never noticed that until last night.

Why would anyone go to BOTH shows just to socialize?

I went last night. I was pretty far up, and there was no one talking around me. A few people with unique styles of dancing, though. And I agree that the second half was better than the first.

thanks to bags for the ticket hookup, hope the bonus prize works out for ya.  twas a good show, plently of people happily bopping along.   i would have probably liked it a bit more had i been a tad bit more familiar with the material.  but i did hear a couple songs which are dj wren friendly.  anyone seen a setlist for the show?

The first night was good, last night was absolutely phenomenal. Not sure if anyone agrees, but it just seemed that the band were more "with it" last night. They probably had a day to rest (hadn't they just flown out from California on Tuesday?), but overall I thought it was more polished, more together, better pacing throughout the set. Better sound too. Overall, just a better production. Gotta say I knew that band had it in them to do that kind of performance, glad I wasn't wrong. They're still funny as hell too...a lot of talent there. I hope they go places.

Are you guys serious? I am SO not trying to be a contrarian nay-sayer, and I really love the Shins' music, but I've seen them live three times now, and would probably not see them again.
Title: Re: Shins Roll Call
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on February 12, 2004, 10:48:00 am
So Celeste and I arrived around 10:15, and when she took a trip to the bathroom, I bet her 20 bucks that I could pick out the Bagster in the crowded Red Room (she had mentioned she would be hanging out there) before Celeste came out of the bathroom. After a quick scan of the crowd, my eyes focused on one woman who fit my mental image of the Bagster to a T. She had mentioned she would be wearing a Marion BARRY t-shirt, so I went and got a closer look at her t-shirt, overheard her swearing like a sailor, and noticed that this particular woman was wearing a red Amoeba Records t-shirt. Well, do I win the $20?

As for the show itself...don't get me wrong, Chutes Too Narrow was one of my top two or three from 2003...but is this band the indie rock version of the Jayhawks, or what? While their recorded music sounds wonderful, live, they simply run through it note for note, and sound pleasant enough, but yet there is still something off...

Maybe it's the fact that they position Alfred E. Newman centerstage. Why they do this, and how that guy gets to date a model, I'll never know. Why they give him a microphone, and let him speak, I'll never know. It's hard to believe that someone as brilliant as James Mercer puts up with this guy. Earth to Shins: put your lead singer centerstage. Take the spotlight off of Newman and give more of it to Mercer and the cute guitarist.

Rumor has it that Newman and the guy in the back pogo-ing, making dog yelps, and random handclaps will form a duo called the Morons. They thought of inviting me into the band, but they couldn't think of the word for three man band.

ditto to everything bunnyman just said..........
tuesday's show was good but wednesday was great...........at first i couldn't decide if it was just where we were standing that made the sound better.........but i am fairly sure they just worked out the acoustics better.........

and brennser are you deaf?  the support was painful..........both nights.

I thought the show was great.  Hardly a note-for-note rendition of their albums.  No sound problems where I was.  Talking was a bit annoying, but it either subsided as the set went on or I successfully tuned it out.

So for those who were at both Beulah and the Shins, how would you compare their live shows?

I though Beulah was far superior live, though I prefer the Shins most recent release to Beulah's.
Title: Re: Shins Roll Call

Only saw some of Cass McComb -- it was dreadful.

The show was very good; I didn't go both nights after all, so am psyched to hear that I saw the better of the two.  I thought the energy was good, band was tight, crowd was fine (yeah, it was noisy, but only if you were on the outskirts of the crowd -- it was much better when I moved in a bit).  I wasn't blown away, but I think there was too much hype so I was expecting 'spectacular.'  A couple songs in the middle were great...I must find my copy of "Oh, Inverted World"

Good to see the boardies I know, and pass on a few tickets!  Will listen to my power pop mix tonight, Kosmo (I am SO psyched!).

I think beulah are better suited to a larger club than the shins, especially when there is a lot of chit-chat. Beulah just have a much fuller sound.

I dont like the shins recordings as much as beulahs, but I thought the shins put on two fine shows, last night the louder songs were better, the first night the quiet songs were better. But that could just be because we were much further back last night.

But although I thought the shins and beulah were good live, I dont think either would be worthy of my top ten concerts of the last 12 months.

Cass McComb were awful. Aids in Africa or whatever it was, repeated ad infinitum......

Sam Jayne (sp?) the first opener seemed like a good guy. I think he would be great in a small quiet club, where there were people who actually liked music.

sam jayne was the guy that opened for les savy fav a couple weeks back, right? kinda good, but not suited as an opener in the district of talkstoomuch. missed him last night, the other opener had horrible sound. but the shins were quite good, was well satisfied with the show despite sweating my ass off.

He also opened for James Mercer/Rosie Thomas/Iron and Wine at Iota. Wasn't too impressed with hime then, but then again the competition was tough.

Maybe it's the fact that I've seen the Shins three times and James Mercer solo once in less than a year and a half that I wouldn't see them again anytime soon. Just seemed like the exact same show I saw four months ago in NYC.

Again, I'm not really complaining about their performance (other than the lame stage banter of the keyboard guy). Good show (6.5 out of 10), but not great. Certainly not worth the price some people were paying for scalped tickets.

Yeah,

Sam Jayne, I agree, I dont think he was the greatest thing ever, but he was good. He definitely deserved more attention than the audience was returning.

For the shins, well I had high expectaions Tuesday night and was disappointed. It was a struggle making it out Wednesday, but having lower expectations and avoiding Cass McCombs meant I had a much better time.

Plus the ride home in GGW's G(GW) Wagon completed the night perfectly.

Any idea what tickets were going for outside?  I had an extra (a lawyer friend stuck at the office over a brief -- eeewwww) and sold it for face.  I don't have the balls to ask for lots for a ticket.  But, I'm curious...

There are two pairs on ebay for the NYC show Saturday currently at $207 and $202 per pair.

At the last minute, I ended up with an extra for last night's show. I only asked for $20.  The homeless guy outside the club acted as a broker in the transaction and got a $5 commission from the buyer.  He may have gotten more than that, as I heard him yelling "hey! Gimme another five bucks" to the guy.

I sold my Tuesday night tickets at cost to a friend.

Aaah, so I saw him, just didn't meet him (didn't assume all your friends post on the board!).  Glad not to have been standing behind him.

Yes. I have a terrible habit of meeting people and asking their board name. If they do not have one, I am just not interested.

Sorry, I thought you had met him before.

Yes.  Gone are the days when I had no compunction about asking $40 for a Fugazi ticket.

Perhaps you were the girl that yelled at me?

GIRL:  You can't scalp a Fugazi ticket!
 ME:  Why not?
 GIRL:  It's just wrong.
 ME:  Why?
 GIRL:  'Cuz it's Fugazi.
ME:  So you won't give me $40 for it.
OTHER DUDE:  I'll give you $40 for it.
 ME:  Deal.
GIRL:  THAT'S SO WRONG!!!! IT'S FUGAZI!!!

That is a riot.  Isn't a fugazi show supposed to be like a Dead show, in that it's all peace and love among the fans, towing the Mackaye line -- "miracle me a fugazi ticket, miracle me a fugazi ticket..."

I'd love to say that was me, but I've never been to a fugazi show.   And I expect to pay for 'conveniences'   ;)

Selling a Fugazi ticket for $40 outside a Fugazi show would be like going to a Dead show dead sober.

Both could potentially be painful experiences.

Although I wouldn't bet on a Fugazi fan being able to kick anybody's ass.

Well, if this review is in today's Post, it's from the Tuesday show.  According to the board double dippers, a review of the Wednesday show might have been even better.

  Shins at the Black Cat

James Mercer's voice doesn't match his looks. You could go all the way back to Barry Gibb without finding a bearded pop singer who was as comfortable in the upper register as the gifted and talented leader of the Shins.

Mercer's words don't match his hooks, either. At the Black Cat on Tuesday, he led the quartet through a 90-minute set of tunes that mulled depression and rejection, sung over melodies that were beautiful or bouncy or both. Mercer's melding of crushing and catchy, and all those "la-la-las" and "wooo-ooohs" and the falsetto crooning, recalled the gorgeous downers Brian Wilson crafted just before jumping in the sandbox.

Mercer has gained a reputation as something of a studio wizard for recording a good chunk of the Shins discography by himself in his basement. But none of the gloom or bounce was lost in the move to the smoky nightclub. Marty Crandall's keyboard, which often was set to mimic a Farfisa organ, added a shagadelic touch, and Crandall handled most of the song introductions. But in concert, as in the studio, the Shins are clearly Mercer's band.

"I want to bury in the yard the gray remains of a friendship scarred," Mercer sang to a wayward love interest in "Kissing the Lipless," from the Shins' second and latest CD, "Chutes Too Narrow." On "A Call to Apathy," he mused: "You want to jump and dance, but you sat on your hands and lost your only chance." "New Slang," as beautiful a pop tune as indie rock has yet offered, found Mercer promising that he himself would dance "like the king of the eyesores" if only this particular romance worked out. Despite all the talk of dancing and happy sounds coming from the stage, there was next to no movement from fans in the packed club.

Hoboken, no joking.

He also wears his pants tucked into his unlaced workboots, for what it's worth.

He also wore his shirt collar up at the Les Savy Fav show.  I deemed it "TUFF".

Thanks, I went with $12.  I was writing a check for another ticket to a guy who never paid me for his Shins ticket; perfect time to get my cash!
