Mine: Valentino's, corner of Little River Turnpike & Seminary Road, Alexandria. Pretty much the only real NY-style place around...a huge counter full of speciality pies ready to be popped into the oven and served by the slice.
-
I would second Valentino's. I used to live right up the road from there; nothing beats their Chicken ala Vodka pizza. I recently moved, and we've tried Montgomery Pizza (I think that's the name) near Old Town...it's just not the same.

None -- I've looked for New York/Jersey pizza in the city and never found it.
Going in another direction, 2 Amys and Matchbox kick ass. But that's not "pizza" the way I'm thinking of real pizza.
-
Do you mean Monterey pizza? It's *awful* - too bad, since they deliver to my area...
-
Alberto's on P St is my favorite.

For a decent no frills NY style slice there's a place in Bethesda called Corner Slice. It's not bad.
In the city as far as delivery is concerned (if you don't want to spend a ton of money on a gourmet pizza) Pizza Boli's is not too bad. It's far better then either of the big chain places.
If you want something tasty but a bit different go to Ledo's Pizza. They serve a pie with a slightly sweet sauce and a very light and flaky crust. Most of their sizes come in a square shape, but it's a very yummy pizza.
-
My own. :D
I've had NY pizza and I don't see what the big deal is. My favorite pizza place is Emma's in Cambridge, Mass.
-
I went to Joes in NYC last year because you're "supposed to". It was awful.
Went to Lombardy's in NYC on Saturday. It was pretty good.
I like Pizza Paridiso here in DC. Though I've only been once. Matchbox was good too.
-
hands down...

As for New York, I agree with RC, I don't see what the big deal is about NY pizza. Most of it is overly-greasy slices served up by surly Greeks, and is no better than the giant slices of Adams-Morgan. Maybe there is a mythical perfect NY pizza that everyone remembers from childhood, but it's damn hard to find.

You're probably not going to get the best pizza at places that specialize in slices.
-
Yeah, but to hear New Yorkers tell it, you can't walk a block without finding the best pizza in the world. And it just ain't so.
Kosmo, because of the size of Alberto's, it would be hard to hold a forum gathering there... the thing to do instead would be to get a large pie or two, get some beers in paper sacks, and walk over to Dupont Circle Park and eat it sitting on the grass on a nice day....

Three Brothers in Greenbelt. The other locations are quite variable (Riggs Road was especially bad, not at all worthy of the name) but Greenbelt is the flagship. Two of the three still work there.

Don't sleep on Ledo's in Langley Park, unless you are scared to venture out to PG.

Yes, but I'm sure we can all agree that New Yorkers are the COOLEST people in the world.

Vace's. I was raised on it, and love it.

Yep, that's the one. Did you ever try Hunan Kitchen on Little River? It's easily the best Chinese food I've ever had. Of course, they also don't deliver to my new apartment. I've actually been reduced to ordering pick-up!
Where do you live? I'm definitely looking for good Chinese where I'm at now, and so far, I haven't found any.

i think italy might disagree with you on what is "real pizza." :)
that being said, i like chicago style much more than flimsy new york style.

Happy to see other put Alberto's. Everytime I mention it to friends, seems no one has heard of it.
Al's Pizzeria on Capitol Hill is pretty good as well.

I'm in Del Ray... the best place for Chinese delivery I've found is Golden Dragon in the Bradlee Center. Good Chinese and sushi, plus excellent scallion pancakes, which you don't see that often.

That's where I live. I tried Golden Dragon (near the Blockbuster, right?) I wasn't that impressed; although I've only been once. I was definitely spoiled by Hunan Kitchen, and it's still worth fighting traffic on Duke Street for their Kung Pao Triple.

I really have started to like Duccini's Pizza at 18th and U St.
Ledo's is different and I really like it. They use a lot of bacon grease though in their dough which I find yummy. I grew up on that when I was way younger and the only location was College Park. Could and still can get half cooked pizzas to take home to finish heating.

i just moved to columbia heights and had a pizza delivered from duccini's the other night...it was terrible tho. maybe i should give it another shot. at least i had a coupon for 99 cent pints of Ben & Jerry's with my order.
btw, i'm having a hard time finding decent delivery in my neighborhood. i'm actually located at three spires (16th & columbia) which is central to u street, mt pleasant, columbia heights and adams morgan. there are tons of restaurants around but no idea who delivers...any ideas? (yum's does not count!)

good grief Charlie Brown; i was going to say the same exact thing!! Vace's is retty much my childhood, with sauce and cheese on top...
i also love ARMAND'S a lot a lot, and i'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet.
and second, third, fourth, and fifth Ledo's.
also love Pizzeria Paradiso...there is one in Georgetown, and one somewhere else near GW that i went to once and don't remember where it was.
is that Adam's Morgan one good? i always pass it, and haven't gone in...

you should check if Mr. Chen's Organic delivers that far, there is basically no good Chinese food is Portland, people seem to like PF Changs and Panda Express, I miss Mr. Chens
http://mrchens.com/ (http://mrchens.com/)
I believe Ducinis is basically a ripoff of Pizza Bolis, but I never tried it
Pizzeria Paradiso is terribly overrated in my opinion, I used to work in the directly above the dupont Paradiso, never understood how it was so popular
My favorite new york style pizza was from The Bagelry in georgetown

Ambrosia in Rockville.

HELLO!
How can this thread have gone on so long without any mention of pizza from Chicago? Which truly is the best pizza other than Neapolitan pizza...
Not only do they claim the origin of the deep dish, which is good, of course, but they have the thin crust that is cut into square slices not triangles. Before I moved to the DC area, I had never seen regular thin crust pizza cut into triangles.
All that being said, the Uno chains are somewhat disappointing. Around here, I like Paradiso and Matchbox best.
-
i like those pizza places that sell pot in the box with your pie, when you say the secret ingredient over the phone. and the secret word is usually something stupid like "extra oregano."
-
I'm pretty fond of jumbo slice. That's not good pizza, but good enough when I'm drunk.

As a transplanted New Yorker whose two favorite pizzerias are/were Mimi's on Lexington and 84th and the dear, departed Tony's Hav-A-Pizza on 86th off Lexington, I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that the only pizza I've found down here that I think compares to NY pizza is the Joe's Pizza and Pasta chain ... large, plain cheese. Once they get into putting stuff on it, all bets are off because it gets too thick and icky. But the plain? Thin crust, oozy and gooey with lots of strusels (the long strands of cheese that make you look like a slob).
-

I prefer thin crust, myself, however, "deep dish" should not be confused with the "all base" thick crust pizzas you might be thinking of...the deep dish I am referring to has a crust that isn't really that thick, but gets its depth from the fillings...mostly cheese! It is best with red wine to cut the fat and heaviness of the cheese, in my opinion, and you can't really have more than one slice comfortably...
This is where Uno's kind of misrepresents what I consider to be "deep dish" pizza!

Rosangela's is good, indeed, but living in the Southwest quadrant of Evergreen, we got our pizza mostly from a place in my dad's old Mt. Greenwood (Chicago) neighborhood, DiGuido's...then he got tired of that and we switched to Barraco's or Palermo's depending on his mood. But, I always wished we could get it from Rosangela's more often!

I think Armand's is kinda overrated, although the Armand's carryout on upper Wisconsin is kind of a romantic place to bring a date on a nice spring evening, sit outside and watch the world go by... eat a couple of foil wrapped slices, share a large coke, and then take her back to your car parked on one of the darker streets near Fort Reno, put on the Barry White and you're in like flint!
I'm glad somoene brought up bagels, that's another thing New York is legendary for where the reality usually falls far short. Maybe if you go up to some Hasidim's flat in Brooklyn and he throws some dough in a pot of boiling water and cooks one up for you fresh, you'll get something approaching the legend, but the typical bagel in Manhattan is depressingly average.

the best bagel places are a couple on the lower east side...but the names are escaping my head right now. we do have a few good bagel places around here (hello? ROCKVILLE.)...i've had the best bagels on the lower east side, though; and in LA.

I've been told that the reason New York bagels (H&H, anyone???) and pizza are ... well, unique ... has to do with the water there. I'm not sure why, maybe someone here with a better grasp of science could explain it ...

mmhm--you are absolutely right. New York, as dirty as it may be, has some of the best-quality tap water in the entire 'States. and the water you use in bread products is a big variable in how things are going to taste.

Bethesda Bagels were fantastic -- I used to drive all the way out there from Woodley Park.
I'm not trying to be snobby -- but the pizza we get around Trenton is so fantastic, with bubbles in the super-thin crust.
Pizza's tough, especially delivery. Any suggestions for delivery around Logan Circle I'd welcome. I hate resorting to Domino's or Pizza Hut.
-
My grandmother lives a few blocks from Rosangela's (thin crust, round pie, square cut) so we get it whenever we're there...usually right after driving from Midway. I've never had the pizza at Barraco's, just the lasagna and stuff like that.

if we are talking about anywhere, the best pizza is clearly St. Louis Style Pizza from Imo's Pizza, although almost everybody not from St. Louis hates it
from wikipedia
St. Louis-style pizza is a distinct style of pizza popular in St. Louis, Missouri and its surrounding areas. It is also sometimes duplicated in other areas of the Midwest.
The most notable characteristic of St. Louis-style pizza is the distinctively St. Louisan provel cheese used instead of (or, rarely, in addition to) the mozzarella common to other styles of pizza.
The pizza has a thin, round crust, as opposed to Chicago's deep-dish style or New York's pan-style. The crust of a St. Louis pizza is somewhat crisp and cannot be folded easily, and is typically cut into three- or four-inch squares instead of the pie-like wedges typical of other pizza. It is often salty and seasoned with more oregano than other pizza types. Despite its thin crust, it can be layered deeply with many different toppings. Sauces tend to have a sweetness to them, some more noticeably than others.
The two largest St. Louis-style Pizza chains are Imo's Pizza and Cecil Whittaker's Pizzeria.

I never would have guessed LA for bagels. As for the Lower East Side, I don't know about bagels, but there's a damn good dumpling place down there, just south of the Tenement Museum and off o the left.

Word from the wise old man......"DON'T EVER TOTALLY GROW UP" :)
On the subject of bagels.....an old boss of mine (jewish) would drive from Potomac to N. Baltimore every saturday morning to buy some bagels that were "the only decent bagel outside of NY" They tasted exactly like the crap you could get at the Giant to me, but maybe you have to be jewish to truly appreciate the bagel or something. I used to say they were absolutely delicious because he was such a nice bloke and I felt I'd be letting him down if I said anything different.

well, Fairfax is practically LA's lower east side (minus Brentwood)...except with cbs studios and a swank outdoor mall. Diamond Bakery has my favorite bagels on the entire planet. they aren't completely New York-y, but they are damn tasty.

One mysterious thing about bagels is that I always thought they were a Jewish thing, but a few years ago I went to Israel and couldn't find a bagel anywhere!
-
The bagel originated in Poland. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagel#History)
BTW, I have been to Poland, and I can testify that Polka music does NOT come from Poland.

On the recommendation of this thread I tried Valentino's on Little River yesterday and it was great. I had a slice of baked ziti. It wasn't as hot as I would have liked, but it was no big deal. I could have asked them to put it in the oven for a few more minutes if I really cared.
They had a huge selection. The Hawaiian and Buffalo Chicken were tempting, but I'd never had baked ziti slices, so I went with that.

yeah...we recently went on a brewery "tour" of the Brooklyn Brewing Co. (which consisted of standing in a room of equipment and hearing a guy talk about beer) and the guide said that NYC water is "untreated"(whatever that means) which is why the pizza dough, bagels and beer are so good...I think it has to do with not having alot of chlorine in it (?)
-
i've never had pizza here that i would write home about. seems like any of the 4 or 5 neighborhoods i inhabited in pittsburgh had better. not a big fan of italian food in the dc area in general. tons of other good stuff, though

The DC area has a TON of chlorine in the water. I notice a huge difference alone with DC to Montgomery Co. I was house sitting for my parents in MD and I thought I was in a pool when I took a shower.
I remember in college a housemate of mine was living at his uncle's during the summer in Chevy Chase, he's from Long Island, and all he could say was how much chlorine was in the water here.
The real answer is the water...unless someone gets bulk water from NYC you will not find a bagel or pizza in the DC area that will even compare to NYC.
