My first reaction was how impressive the "greening" efforts were. From the biodiesel generators to the volunteers separating compost from recycling from actual trash, the results were pretty impressive for a festival that large. I hope other big events adopt this model.

While there wasn't any one band I was extra excited to see, I was surprised by how many I actually liked. Saturday highlights were Cheap Trick (who were better than I've ever seen them), Modest Mouse, and Shout Out Out Out Out. Disappointments were Amy Winehouse (I like her music but thought her set was decidedly blah) and Fountains of Wayne (who were a little sluggish and played too early in the day for my taste).

Sunday's highlight was clearly the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I hadn't seen them since their Black Cat days. I was impressed by their ability to work a big crowd. I thought they'd suffer outside of a smaller venue but that was clearly not the case. Wu Tang Clan were a big hit and I liked Panic At The Disco a lot more than I thought I would. Bad Brains underwhelmed.

The layout for this year was decent. There were plenty of vendors and the only really painful lines were for water refilling stations. There should have been much more access to free water in weather like that.

But everything considered, I went in with moderate expectations, but came away very pleased.

i can honestly say i had a blast, everyone was super friendly and the waterfountain refilling stations were heaven sent. everything was spaced well and i never had any downtime. there was always something to do even if there were bands playing i didn't care to see.

anyhow, this was just my experience from the weekend...
SATURDAY: i played uber-fan and during paulo nutini was able to score a prime on the rail, nearly middle spot that i held onto for the remainder of the day. so although i missed everything on the north stage, i was pumped for everything on the south stage - peter, bjorn and john (although um... where's john and who was that dude on drums?), lcd soundsystem was fucking solid and it was nice to see james murphy on the up and up since during his club appearance earlier this year he wasn't 100 percent. i don't think i can ever say enough about tv on the radio so it goes without saying i was pleased. i was warned from the start that modest mouse's stage show was just meh. i was super pleased with the assortment of songs and was amped that they opened with 'paper thin walls.'

SUNDAY: it was a completely different animal. i swore to myself i would check everything out and i did. i watched a little bit of nearly everything and was glad i did. i even got the my hair done in a nice little amywinehouse-esque beehive when i didn't care to sit through panic! at the disco. there is just something about having my teased and sprayed to the max while listening to bad brains in the background - i highly suggest it. also, despite sweetcell's warning, i skipped the majority of the pumpkins for M.I.A and was glad i did. also, the rally on the way out of pimlico? classic.

highlights for me? tv on the radio. CSS with the shrubs. the yeah yeah yeahs (karen o is nuts). the wu-tang clan (there is just something about watching richard branson bob his head to 'ain't nothin' to fuck with on the jumbo-tron) and M.I.A. also... the gnomes. i like them a lot.

the meh list? modest mouse. spoon (i was really looking forward to this, i think i'd like them better in a club setting).

my biggest complaint (which really seth has no control over)? i bought a t-shirt for my mother (yeah, the olive v fest shirt with the line-up) and the screenprinting on it was pretty messy. there are black splotches on the back of it that of course i didn't notice until i was out the gate. i bought it at the end and stuffed it in my bag. oh well.

overall i was highly pleased and am really sore today at work. i'm hobbling around like an 80-year-old but it was totally worth it for the amount of ass shaking, jumping and photo taking i did.

Almost forgot a couple of things...

EVERYBODY WAS SUPER FRIENDLY EVEN THOUGH IT WAS 900 DEGREES! Every staff person, volunteer, vendor, etc. was extremely upbeat even while we were all melting. I haven't seen that many smiles at a festival before.

And the sound was terrific. Whoever pulled this off, deserves a prize. Every band sounded great.

i agree. even on the way out... staff folks were like high-fiving people. everyone seemed to be treated very very well and i never had a run-in at all - granted i didn't drink and know how to handle myself in public - so i can't say everyone had the same positive experience...

I turned up only attending Sunday. Well put together, everyone was really cool. Started out in the rave tent, then saw half of Regina Spektor, half of Matisyahu, all of Spoon, some of EITS, ate lunch during P!@tD, then got up front for YYS, Intrpol and the Mighty SP. Great show despite the heat. Got my picture taken with Richard Branson.

Only complaints: not enough water fountains. Seriously, there was a 20 minute wait anytime I went to one. Also, ev after being there, I have no idea why  would've paid for VIP.

I actually had no problems either.  I usually don't like large crowds like that because they normally are heavily populated with problem children.  This festival was a little different.  Everyone I ran into was very friendly.

I kind of felt like I was at Bonaroo Lite (which wasn't a bad thing).  Smaller; instead of farmland and campsites outside the festival, there was a city; the crowd was expectedly more bro/frat boy; among other things...
But all the things I love about Bonnaroo were present as well... good bands, great sound, friendly people, good food, interesting other things to do... like "incredibly strange wrestling", "green" efforts, etc.

I think my biggest surprise was how easy the Metro was to access the festival.  The MTA employees were very friendly and helpful.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the festival.  I think beforehand I was kinda thinking... it's going to be a pain in the ass to get there, and it's going to be like an hfstival, but with some bands I really want to see... but it didn't end up being like that at all.  I think the only thing that would keep me from coming back year after year is the price.

Were the VIP tickets worth the additional $$?

highlights:
cheap trick, ben harper, beastie boys, police, pumpkins.

i never left the north stage, except for a remarkably small number of ejections for a show that size.

it's been a rough couple of weeks.  time for rest.  anybody that wants to rub my feet for me, come to kensington.

It depends on how much $ you have to spend. Frankly, after having done years of festivals in brutal heat, pouring rain, packed in the pit like sardines, waiting in lines forever just to get some really lousy food or overpriced drinks...I'm done with it. We only go to a few festivals every year and when we do, we get the VIP tix.

We never waited in line for anything, there was an air conditioned retreat in the grandstand, and the VIP viewing area for the North stage was amazing - we had plenty of "personal space" even during the busiest sets. The view and sound from there was perfect. The shaded VIP lounges were a great idea, but the execution could have been improved on. Oh, and did I mention the air conditioned washrooms? No more portapotties for this aging hipster!!

Having said that, there were some glitches with the VIP areas. They weren't really serious but when you shell out $450/person, you expect a lot.

Overall, I don't think I got $450 worth but I'd rather overpay and be comfortable than endure a whole weekend of heat, lineups, and annoyances.

-Sunday was better then Saturday.
 -Heat was UNGODLY on Saturday.
-Didn't really like the "Abortions Good, Ant-Abortions Evil" videos running between bands. I mean, will there be Abortion Tents next year to accompany the videos??

-I LOVED the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. Not the best band there, but probably the best performance that I saw.
-Bad Brains were good. Especially for a fan that has always wanted to see them.
-Amy Winehouse just kind of went thru the motions. Not a bad voice, but didn't need to see her to enjoy it.
 -Spoon was ok.
-Everybody seemed to enjoy Incubus, although not my cup of tea. Girls LOVED them.
-Police were good, not great. Didn't like the way they played Roxanne. I wouldn't mind how they changed the songs had they not changed SO MANY of them. Really liked "So Lonely.'
-I thought the Pumpkins were really good. Would have liked to hear them play "Disarm", but other then that, i thought they picked a really good set list. And mixed it up between slow and harder songs real good. Crowd was just horrible by that point, which sucked.
-Beastie Boys showed up big time.  Their instrumental stuff kind of slowed things down, but when they picked it up, they rocked out. I'm not even that big of a Beastie Boys fan, but i thought there set was really good.
-Interpol wasn't bad, just not my kind of band. Especially after YYY's and Smashing Pumpkins, didn't really like it.
-Ben Harper isn't my kind of band either, but I must say, for what they do, they are damn good.
-Fratellis were ok. I think they would be better in a club enivorment.

Overall I had a GREAT TIME. I would say that, from what i saw, the Highlites were Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Beastie Boys, and the Pumpkins. You booked a great group of artists. Some of them sucked, but that isn't your fault. You went out and got the best group you could. How they played once they got there is out of your control. I LOVED how smooth the shuttle/metro system was. Seriously, you and Baltimore did a great job. Still didn't see anything there that would justify VIP. Maybe next year do a VIP, rock the bells type thing. where VIP memembers get the close area to the stage? that would help stop the drunk frat boys from just bulldogging everybody so they could be front row. I went last year, went this year, and based on those two years, I will certainly be back next year.

I had a blast. First festival and it was awesome.  Hardly and lines at all.  Crabcakes were out of this world. Parking had no problem and had no problem getting out.
CSS was the best!! Those shrubs were perfect for them. F*** united airlines..haha  I have some pictures of them and video.
then i went to matis..however u spell it...it was hot but I enjoyed his set.
spoon..yeah yeah yeahs, I really enjoyed interpol, although i got rained on...and on.
Smashing pumpkins for hald a set..then went to see MIA...i've seen her before and I just think I was too tired.  She was okay, not a fan of the new songs. Loved the old ones.
   So much fun!!!
Love the text messages across the screen.

My only problem was finding the water refilling stations, i kept finding recharge bars and shade tents. And then I just got too lazy.

Saturday: We hit tons of traffic on the way there and got there around 3 right when Incubus hit the stage, there was wayyyy too many people to try to get up closer so we hung back for the Incubus set. Then we walked around and did the experience, got some buttons made, saw some guitar hero then hit up the Dance Tent and saw Danny Tenaglia tear it up for 2 hours. Then we hit up LCD Soundsystem for a bit and went back to the Dance Tent to see Sasha&Digweed for a bit and then we hit up the Beastie Boys which were AWESOME! Saw The Police, boring, and then saw Modest Mouse, after that we hit up the Dance Tent yet again to see a bit of Sander Van Doorn and went to the hotel.

Sunday: We got there a bit after 1 and saw a good chunk of the Regina Spektor and then stuck around for Spoon, kinda meh. We withstood the crapstorm that is Panic! At The Disco so we could get insanely close to the glorious Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, amazing. Their set was kind of disappointing because they played a lot of Is Is and Show Your Bones stuff, but it was still a great performance. After the Yeahs we ran to the 2nd stage and caught about a half hour of Wu Tang who were absolutely amazing! I saw an old old old couple throwing up the W and dancing, so hilarious. When the Clan started playing "Gravel Pit" We were already on our way to the dance tent to catch The Crystal Method, we stayed for about 20 or 30 minutes and went back to the main stage for Interpol. After that we moved up for The Pumpkins, insanity, too bad my friend hates them and was falling asleep on the rail and annoying the piss out of me, after "World Is A Vampire" I decided to go catch what I could of 311, which was about 40 or 45 minutes, then we headed out during 311's encore.

Was there a significant drop off from day 1 to day 2? Getting to the main stage around 3 was nearly impossible on day 1 and day 2 was easier than last year to get up close during Interpol and Smashing Pumpkins.

Highlights: Danny Tenaglia, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Smashing Pumpkins, 311, Wu Tang and def. the Beaties.

I have about 230 some pictures and videos. I'll post them later maybe.

Another thing, If anyone was in the dance tent for longer than 30 minutes you'd be sweating moer than anywhere else in teh festival, ater walking out of the dance tent into 100 degree weather i actually felt BETTER.

Went on Saturday and agree w/with most of the above.  Had a GREAT time.  Concession stands were plentiful and well-staffed.  Tons of portable toilets, too, but soap was hard to come by.  Don't want to hear whining about having to wait for the water fountains when folks could have brought in plenty of water for free.  We froze our 1 liter bottes and granted they were a little warm by 3pm but 1/2 a gallon was more than enough for me for the entire day.

The Police were just as underwhelming as expected, what with the entire set being played at half speed.  The Beasties' set was the best-paced set of the entire day.  Ben Harper was solid.  Winehouse was late & dialed it in.  Cheap Trick sounded much better than expected.

Only wish I'd been able to catch more of the South Stage.  Can't have everything.

After Rock the Bells and VFest I'm kinda glad that I won't have a festival show to go to this weekend.

WOW. what a great two days but I'm exhausted. I'm sure anyone who worked *or* attended both days will agree, and I didn't even make it back for the second day until almost noon. Most of the staff was there at 8:30 both days and didn't get out until after 11 both nights, not including those who worked for many days before the event, and those that are still there cleaning up, tearing down, and sorting everything out. SO I really can't complain, as I think a good time was had by all folks associated with the event.

Highlight (possibly of my life, let alone v-fest   :D  ) was playing bongos with Peter, Bjorn and "Nino" the drummer who is filling in for John on this short leg of their American tour.  It was surreal to walk onto a stage and look out at a sea of people, all with smiling faces ready to hear the current PB&J big hit/favorite... and to then sit center stage and play along on the bongos. One of those moments that you wish you could re-live over and over and over.

Everyone asked how I got to do it... Well, my roomate "Fluffy" a long time 930 veteran, is tour managing/assisting on this American leg, and Filip, also a 930 employee and former bandmate of mine, is doing monitor sound for them on this tour.  They called ahead and told me that they've had different people jumping in on "Young Folks" on Bongos, and different female vocalists doing the verse exchanges (although we couldn't find someone for this show, unfortunately, as on Saturday, aside from Amy Winehouse, there weren't many other female vocalists running around in the artist compound that could jump in). ...So Fluffy asked me if I wanted to play the bongos with them at V-Fest.  ...To which I replied: "Who do I have to kill to be able to do so?"   :D

Low lights? How could there be after that?? ha! ..but honestly, if I had to think about it, I think that doing it in early August is a bad idea.  Many folks that I talked to agreed that for the first weekend in August, alot of people in this area go on vacation, and also, you know that you are going to have one of two things on the first weekend in August; Thunderstorms (which we narrowly avoided with only a little bit of rain at the end) and/or extremely hot/humid conditions. Doing it in September like last year, I think, would be better overall.

Oh yeah, and get Pearl Jam there next year, Seth. I'll duet with Eddie Vedder, and we can get you on drums  ;)     ...then life will be complete.

I hope everyone had at least half as much fun as I did at the Virgin Festival this year, if you did, I'm sure we'll see you next year!!

Great time.  Saw a bunch of bands I normally wouldn't pay to see and some were impressive: Yea Yea Yeas, Wu Tang Clan, Regina Spektor (a little too cutesy, but a great voice).  I thought Bad Brains, Beastie Boys and Police killed but I'm biased.  Missed parts of TV on the Radio and Modest Mouse but what the hell can you do if the Police are playing on the other stage?  I now know that Interpol is a very, very boring live band with a very tired sound.  They are the only band that could drive me to watch a band that is led by the lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots.
But overall...not too much down time. I spent very little time not directly in front of one of the stages.  Some conflicts but if the biggest problem at a festival is that there are too many good bands playing at the same time, then you are at a great festival.
Very impressive with the collection of garbage and like last year, not many long lines.  Very nice people working the festival and quite frankly, a nice crowd too.  Not the drunken fratboy fest I feared.
Hope it keeps going.  The prices are rough, but I'll buck up for good music and great service anytime.  Its very nice to have a festival nearby with the quality of music I heard over the weekend.

I forgot about the 'high 5's' celebration on the tunnel on the way out.  It was very amusing.  I really enjoyed Interpol and the Pumpkins of course.  24 ounce beers are always a plus as well.  I had a good time at the fest.  I only went on Sunday.  Getting to the venue seemed MUCH easier this year.  GREAT sound for an outdoor event (despite what Wutang Clan said... They are lame.)  I had a wonderful afternoon.  How many were in attendance?

Had a great time, the only real suggestion I could offer is with the water refill and water sales.  More water refilling areas would be great, I understand there is a supply issue but if there is a way to get more water there it would be great.

Since the liens for the refilling stations were so long we often set out to buy water.  Unfortunately the only places to buy water were also some of the busiest - The Bars.  The huge selection at the bar was great, a very nice touch but it made the line move slow (since there were so many choices and things to make).  When I simply wanted a water I had to wait 20 minutes in the bar line to get it.  Maybe next year there could be dedicated water only sales places, the turnover time is very low since the only choice is water (I have seen this at other festivals and it works really well)

Thanks for the great festival, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and hopefully it was successful enough to go again next year.

i don't know where you were... but i never had any issue either day of walking up to a counter to buy a bottle of water. i think the longest line i was in was maybe two minutes. max. nearly every single vendor had water to sell it seemed.

an hour is about standard for them (at least when i saw them, last time was 3 years ago or so.) they might be playing longer setlists when they headline now though, since they're a "bigger" band now.

What an awesome 2 days!

 Day 1

Fratellis were high energy for so early in the day.  Was not too familiar with there music but was pleasantly surprised.  Nice way to start the day.

Caught part of Amy Winehouse.  Just terrible. No energy.

Say what you want about Incubus but I thought they put on a great performance. Boyd is quite the performer.

Ben Harper was the biggest surprise of the day.  I have always liked him but I was not expecting much from him live.  I was completely wrong however as he put on probably the best or second best performance of day one.  He has such a naturally good voice and his band was outstanding.  His songs were much more up tempo then on his records.  I would love to see him next time he comes around for a full set.

Beastie Boys were outrageous. Probably put on the best performance of the day.  I loved how they sampled a few newer songs and mixed them into there hits.  The instrumental stuff was terrible but I believe they only played 3 so it was not a big deal.  Money Mark is hilarious.  Not bad for some middle aged white men raping.

  <img src="http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/3905/beastieboys1zf7.jpg" alt=" - " />

The Police were good.  Not great.  Got off to a great start with Message In a Bottle but slowed down considerably.  Wrapped Around Your Finger was the highlight of the set for me.  Roxanne sucked.  Sting cant hit those high notes anymore and totally ruined the song by slowing it down.  Left midway through that crappy version of Roxanne and caught the last 30 minutes of Modest Mouse who were quite good.

  <img src="http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/1628/police1qp9.jpg" alt=" - " />

 Day 2

Started the day with Girl Talk.  Gillis is an amazing performer.  I think he is incredibly talented. Its to bad he only had a half hour...

I was impressed by Matisyahu.  Sounded better live then I had been led to believe.  Highlight was when he brought his son on stage who then  proceeded to waddle half way across the stage and back with his big head phones on.

  <img src="http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/6818/matisyahu3qb8.jpg" alt=" - " />

Spoon was a major disappointment.  To big of a stage for them maybe?  Left a lot to be desired.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs were good.  Not all their music is necessarily my type but still very good overall. Karen O is nuts.

Interpol was for me the biggest surprise of day 2.  I had low expectations as I had not given them much of a chance prior, however they were excellent.  They had big shoes to fill with Smashing Pumpkins on deck but they did a great job and got the crowd going in anticipation for the Pumpkins.

Smashing Pumpkins were amazing.  The obvious headliner of the 2 day event, they did not disappoint.  Fantastic set.  I can not state enough how awesome they were and what an awesome ending they were to the festival!

 Thanks Seth!

Did anyone see the Velvet Revoler/311 GNR cover? Or was that a joke? And did anyone catch Matisyahu come on stage with 311 for "The Love Song"? That was pretty cool.

I should clarify that this was only on Saturday, Sunday was a breeze getting to any vendor.  On Saturday we picked a "random" food line in the long section of food and found they did not do water.  Lesson learned, waled up to the front of the line at the SoCo place to see if they had water before waiting in line, found they did not either.  Another vendor did lemonade, but again no water.

All directed us to the sign that said water (at the bar/beer/drink booths) and at least on Saturday all around the main stage and dance area the lines were fairly long in duration, granted this was between sets when everyone was walking out looking for a drink.

It was just a bit of constructive criticism, I remember at places like Coachella there were dedicated water only booths, at Lolla they were water/beer/wine but the total number of choices was like 5 (2 beers, 2 wines or water) making the line move well.

I love the bar availibility at Virgin, but it does make for much slower lines and slower waits for water.

Had an awesome time this weekend first time ive been to a festival this big.

 highlights:
Ben Harper was great really surprised me because i have only listend to a few of his songs.
Beastie Boys was easily the best band of the weekend for me IMO.
Bad brains was the band i really came the weekend for and they were insane my favorite band on the fest and i caught H.R. hat.
Velvet Revolver was awesome and to see slash live was just amazing.
Smashing pumpkins  was a great with a intense set and which made it better was i finally crowd surfed me bein a 270 pound guy  never thought i would ever do that but i did.

 low lights:
missing cheap trick due to the traffice back up
and leaving early during the police set i felt like shit.

I will be back next year no matter what bands are playing but i really really hope Pearl Jam will play v fest next year.

Very nice photos.  A lot of them too.   Did you have a press pass of some kind??  Even with the smaller stage, I never got that close to anyone.  20 feet at best.  Once again, great work.

For the guy who wanted to know about Wu's setlist, I remember them playing Ice Cream, Duel of the Iron Mics, Liquid Swords, Bring the Pain, Da Rockwilder, one or two other solo songs, all the big songs off 36 chambers, and a few other excellent songs.

 Highlights were:
 Fratellis
 Incubus
Ben Harper: Never heard him before but he was amazing
Beastie Boys: BEST ACT OF DAY 1
 GIRL TALK!!!!
 Matisyahu: That dude went crazy
 WU-TANG CLAN
And of course, the best act of the whole festival, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS

 What sucked:
THE POLICE SUCKED. I found them boring, bland, and sucky. Really sucky.
 Bad Brains.
Hearing even the faintest echo of Amy Winehouse.

With all over the overwhelming love being express for The Police's set haha I'm glad I saw them at the Garden instead, from reviews of the tour it appears that their sets are not as good when playing to stadium sized crowds as opposed to arena sized ones.

I had a wonderful time at the festival on Sunday. Unfortunately, I only went to day 2, but I'm really happy that I had the chance to attend.

I really want to say that the 2 for 1 deal for people who live in the neighborhood of the festival was quite genius! It was a killer way of doing community relations.

As for the performances, I checked out the follow:
-Girl Talk (he's such an unbelievably good dj. I just wish his set was longer.)
-Regina Specktor (she was pretty decent. Never been really into her music, but it was cool.)
-Spoon (but I only saw them for a few moments)
-Explosions in the Sky (they totally took my breath away)
-Panic at the Disco (I only saw them for a song because I was looking for my friends. I honestly felt they were way out of place at the show. To me, they aren't rock'n roll.)
-Bad Brains (my friends and I had fun watching them)
-Yeah Yeah Yeahs (I loved their performance. Karen O is sheer electricity)
-Interpol (Though it was my 4th time seeing them, they still manage to amaze me. I will say though, it was really really hard chosing between them and VR. Now was it just me or did Interpol leave the stage earlier than they were suppose to?)
-The Smashing Pumpkins (They were the major reason my friends and I came out to the festival. They seriously amazed me. My only compliant is that they didn't do an encoure, but I'm sure there were reasons for that)

As for the set up, I really liked the two different stages. It was at times tough though to decide who to go see. I would've checked out Velvet Revolver if I knew I could've gotten a good spot for the Pumpkins, but I was too nervous to leave the one stage in fear of losing my spot for the Pumpkins.

Another thing, I did like how close things were. I didn't feel like I was walking forever to go to the different tents, stands and attractions.

One more thing I really liked was how environmentally geared the festival was. I think having stuff set up for recycling was quite clever. I hope that the stuff that is being picked up off the ground is also recycled.

As for something to improve, in between the different bands' sets, how about showing what is going on the other stage on the big screens. For instance, when one band was finished on the North stage there's like a 30 minute wait for the next act, well during that time, why not show who's playing on the other stage or in the dance tent.

The festival as a whole was really enjoyable. Granted I'm not sure what Saturday was like, I didn't have much issue with people being jerks on Sunday. I was able to have a pretty great time with my two best friends from College. And it seems everyone who was there was there for the music! It was like a party for music geeks  :)

Keep up the awesome work, Seth!

ps- Prince would be a fantastic headliner for next year.

I thought the Homestar Runner was really cool on the screens. More of that or, as this guy said, showing what else is going on at the other stage would be really cool. Of course, no one would leave the main stage knowing they can see the other stage on the video screen thereby reducing traffic making mainstage backlog horrible. But maybe a song or two wouldn't be awful.

Yeah, close to 15 minutes early, by my count. I wish SP had started 15 minutes early since they were clearly set up in time to go.

RE: VIP worth it. In general yes. But still hard to pay that amount again in return for experience. Good sections for viewing although for the price it should be closer. Bathrooms in VIP area alone almost made the value. North stage especially as far as good area combined with quick access to rest rooms and refreshment. Made it really easy and fun. The Grandstand was a joke though. No food tiny bar and felt abandoned. Water refills should have been available in these areas. The so called after party was a club downtown and the only thing special was no cover???? Big let down.
The best staff ever for me. Everywhere everyone was awesome. Had nothing to do with VIP just really damned great people working hard but having fun and being exceptionally nice in the hottest of conditions.

I loved the festival. Thanks to everyone who set this thing up. It was such a wonderful experience; both my brother and I cannot wait for next year!

 RANKINGS (from what I saw):
Fiction Plane 6/10 (only caught last 2 songs)
Cheap Trick 7.5/10 (a lot more fun than I expected)
The Fratellis 8/10 (great way to start the day)
Amy Winehouse 4/10 (boring, no energy)
Paolo Nutini 9/10 (excellent! such a small crowd)
Incubus 5/10 (I love this band, but such a weak setlist; way too hot during their performance)
Ben Harper 8/10 (very solid; quite a nice surprise)
LCD Soundsystem 9/10 (really tight sound; I didn't want to stop dancing)
Beastie Boys 10/10 (can't get any better than this; what a performance!)
TV on the Radio 5.5/10 (just OK; "Wolf Like Me" rocked)
The Police 7.5/10 (way too many reworked songs; "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" was a highlight; Stuart Copeland is the man.)

 ---

 Aiden 2/10 (awful)
CSS 8/10 (very fun; hilarious; great start to the day)
Girl Talk 8.5/10 (I wish I had seen the whole set!)
Regina Spektor 8.5/10 (humble; fantastic voice)
Matisyahu 5/10 (about what I expected)
 Spoon 3/10 (terrible)
Explosions in the Sky 7/10 (don't know their stuff; enjoyed them)
Panic! At the Disco 6.5/10 (I hate their radio singles, but man, they weren't so bad. "The Weight" (The Band cover) was a nice surprise)
 Bad Brains 6/10 (OK)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs 9/10 (Karen O controlled the stage)
Interpol 10/10 (excellent set; I loved hearing stuff from the new CD)
Velvet Revolver 7/10 (sounded good on the 3-4 songs I heard)
Smashing Pumpkins 10/10 (perfect set, although ending on reworked "Heavy Metal Machine" was weird. I expected a "Cherub Rock" encore)
311 - I wish I had heard more of their set

 ---

 - Everyone was wonderful and nice with the exception of the Virgin Festival signing booth staff.
 - The crab cake sandwiches were awesome.
 - The set up was perfect. I could hear some bands from one stage while another band was in between songs, but that's OK. No real sound bleeding issues.
 - I had no trouble with lines for the bathrooms or food. The water line, on the other hand, was trouble.
 - PLEASE BRING PEARL JAM NEXT YEAR.  :)

Seth, take a bow. This is hands down the best run festival that I've ever been to. There is no waiting for anything. It's instant gratification. The staff is always helpful and friendly. Even though I  preferred last year's bands, there was still plenty to do and see. I am worried though. I know the brand hasn't been built up enough yet, but 32k makes me fear that it won't be back. Also, thanks for throwing the old geezers like me a bone (Cheap Trick this year, The Who last year).

Did anyone else notice that in some of this year's photos (Early in the day) that Branson is wearing the same blue striped button down that he wore last year? Should we pitch in and get this guy a garment?

re: PJ - meh.  i understand the nostalgia factor, but based on their lolla performance and their last show at verizon i wouldn't get too excited about it.  i think their hype far outweighs their reality (is that a rhettism?).  they're crowd-pleasers, but i'm not sure they deserve all the adoration based on what they currently delivery.  eddie isn't the wild performer he used to be, iggy is a hell of a lot more fun to watch on stage.  but putting on my marketing hat, i have no doubt they'd sell a lot of tickets.

I spent way way way too much money at the festival, thats for sure.  Nothing like $9 beers, $4 sodas, $3 waters ugh

anyway, Saturday was so f'ing hot, I'm surprised I made it through the whole day.  The highlight of Saturday for me was without a doubt TV on the Radio.  I've seen them before (at the Ottobar a few years back opening up for Firewater) and impressed me way back then.....no different this time.  Love those guys.  The other highlights of Saturday were Cheap Trick and LCD Soundsystem.  Modest Mouse were booorrring (but sounded good)

Sunday the temp was much lower so that was great.  Highlights were Dan Deacon (horsey horsey - although next time remember spare batteries..how many times does this happen???? jeeez), Explosions in the Sky - hadn't heard them before at all, so was surprised when I actually dug them, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol and MIA.

I really wanted the highlight of Sunday night to be the flame spitting machine + robot, but it seemed like they were having problems with that...so I wanted the highlight to be the destruction of the virgin effigy - of course they had to have problems with that too....eventually they did get one robot working and the other one hand controlled to knock it down.....was cool, but a bit of a letdown with all the problems they were running into.  would have been better if they lit that thing on fire, but I suppose pimlico wouldn't have liked that, heh.

I'm a girl btw  :)  but yeah exactly. someone mentioned highlights and that would be totally awesome as well.

Yeah, close to 15 minutes early, by my count. I wish SP had started 15 minutes early since they were clearly set up in time to go. [/b]
That's what my friend and I figured too! I don't understand why they left 15 minutes early. I know they're not really into festivals, but you would think they would've played for the whole set since they did have a lot of time allotted for them.

I'm glad people agree with me. I know someone third my idea! I can just imagine how crazy awesome it would be to have him play. Another artist that would be amazingly cool would be David Bowie. I do believe he occasionally does festivals still.

One thing I forgot to mention about the V-fest that I really like is how each band had a good bit of time to play to fans. I really loved getting 90 minutes from the pumpkins and getting an hour from the YYYs. It's really genius compared to how radio festivals are done where each band except for like 3 of the bigger acts on the bill get to only play for like a half hour.

Who do yall think could possibly be headliners next year??(yeah i kno its a year away but just wanna know what yall think)

 Possibles:
 Pearl Jam
 Rage Aginst The Machine
Led Zeppelin (doubt it from what i hear there only gonna play a few shows if they reunite)
 Radiohead
 Daft punk
 Iggy and the stooges
 Soundgarden (if they reunite)
 Metallica
Pink Floyd (there playing a show in october supposly)

 Anybody else?

Pearl Jam: i personally wouldn't be excited about them, they weren't that great at lolla, but they'd sell a lot of tickets
Rage Aginst The Machine: novelty might be over by next year, unless they release another album.  might work if they don't play another show on the east coast between now and then.
Led Zeppelin: reunion has been discredited.  would probably want too much money anyways.
Radiohead: yes please, album coming out before next vfest
 Daft punk: yes please
Iggy and the stooges: not sure they're big enough to headline, not enough mainstream appeal
Soundgarden: not sure they have quite enough mainstream appeal either - but maybe.  would need to be paired with a big mainstream or classic draw (sorta like the pumpkins were this year with the police).
Metallica: maybe, i wouldn't mind them, would also sell a lot of tickets
Pink Floyd: yes please, for the nostalgia factor and the great light show

as mentioned above, prince would also be good.  he'll be touring later this year, if that generates enough buzz then the should be demand for him at a festival late next summer.

foo fighters would also work.  they will also be touring later this year/early next year.

I was talking to my friend on our way back from V Fest, while listening to Daft Crunk, would Daft Punk be able to headline the main stage? I said there's no way they could headline teh dance tent, their pyramid is too big. So I said at least they could headline the 2nd stage, but is it a stretch to think they could headline the main stage next year?

That's my 1 band request for next year, Daft Punk at some point in time. Daft Motherfucking Punk.

Metallica seems like a good bet. Everybody is talking about their new album under the direction of the great Rick Rubin. So it seems like that would be the hot or trendy choice when VFEST comes around next year. But does Metallica fit in well with VFEST???  I really couldn't imagine seeing a bunch of long haired metal heads walking around with their chain wallets and cut-off jorts.
Keep in mind I'm not insulting metal heads. I love Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, Metallica, etc.  Just don't know if Metallica would be the best pick for the festival.

Dream Line Up:

Radiohead, The Hold Steady, Wilco, Superdrag, Rilo Kiley, Ben Kweller, The Arcade Fire, The White Stripes, Nine Inch Nails, Dresden Dolls, Drive By Truckers, The Magic Numbers, Pixies,The Faint, Kaiser Chiefs, Weezer, The Pogues, Public Enemy, The Bellrays, and a reunited Salt n Peppa.
I would definitely go to that show.

But the thing about metallica is metal heads hate them.they sold out  because they went from thrash metal to hard rock.I could see metal heads coming to the show for the fact they play music only off there first 5 albums but it would just be for them
they wouldnt get there at 11 in the morning and just sit through 5 or 6 bands they never heard of or dont like.

i've seen it with my own eyes: daft punk do a killer job of headlining a main stage.  based on my reading of reviews of lolla (which i've done a lot of), they are the most popular candidate for "best set of the festival".  what is your concern about putting them there?  their stage/light set-up is huge, i'm not sure it would fit the second stage (definitely not last year's second stage).

vfest doesn't have a theme - it's not an indie-fest, or a classic-rawk-fest, or a rap-fest... it's a bit-of-everything-for-everyone-fest.  metallica are mainstream compared to every other "metal" acts.  i think putting on the pumpkins was a greater stretch.

I don't think Daft Punk would be as main stream, as say, the Chili Peppers, The Who, The Smashing Pumpkins or The Police, which is my only concern about that. I'd love to see Daft Punk headline teh main stage, I think it would be one of the greatest things I'll ever see/experience live. I've heard enough Daft live mixes and seen enough videos [entire coachella set on video google] to know that that's something I need to see live. But for some reason I don't see them headlining the main stage at the V Fest next year, I wonder what 94.7 The Globe would say...

The Globe would say "Daft What?", considering i heard one of their DJs say that KT Tunstall and Paulo Nutini are some of the great rock currently coming out of Scotland

I like some of the ideas people have for V fest.

 My list of ideas are:

 1. Soundgarden (people would go nuts trust me)
 2. Pearl Jam (I could see this working if SG don't reunite)
 3. Oasis (it makes sense to me)
 4. She Wants Revenge (they got a new album coming out soon)
 5. Prince (already mentioned it but might as well do it again)
 6. Mighty Mighty Bosstones (if you can get them to reunite!)
 7. Radiohead
 8. Blur (maybe?)
 9. The Happy Mondays
 10. Rage Against the Machine
 11. Foo Fighters
 12. Iggy Pop and The Stooges (it would work well if earlier in the day)
 13. David Bowie (he'd make a killer headliner)
 14. Muse
 15. Daft Punk
 16. Against Me!
 17. PJ Harvey
 18. Nick Cave (either Grinderman or Bad Seeds)
 19. The Cult

okay that's all I can think of right now. I think there's a lot of awesome people and bands who Seth could book for next year. Basically in my mind, V-fest is the festival for people who love rock'n roll and music in general.

For the next V Fest .. how 'bout some bands who actually may be on tour next year?

 AC/DC
 REM
 Peter Gabriel
 Led Zeppelin

I hardly care at this point who gets booked.  I didn't necessarily care for the bands during the first one and I had a great time.  When they expanded it to two days and threw together a lineup of bands that I personally enjoy, I had a great time again.  I now have complete faith in the Virgin people that next year will be fantastic based on those two experiences.  Any of the bands that have been mentioned would be fine with me.

I also think its hilarious the idea that Daft Punk might not play a dance tent due to the fact that "their pyramid is too big".  I am laughing picturing the negotiations breaking down and the Daft Punk guys storming out of the meeting over the size of their pyramid.  It all just seems very Spinal Tap-ish.  Anyway, I'd love to see them next year too.

They need to go back into hibernation for another five or so years, they've played/will play enough over the last 18 months for everyone that really wants to see them to see them.  The great thing about Daft Punk was that their appearances were rare and therefore special, we're coming close to borderline DP fatigue at this point.  Be happy that Portishead is coming back, and add them to your petition for both V Fest and a club gig.

very nice, Portishead would be a phenomenal booking for the V-Fest - great call!

 how about:

 Manu Chao
 Massive Attack
 Gentleman & Far East Band
 De La Soul
 The Orishas
 Lynton Kwesi Johnson
 Pancho Sanchez
 Amadou & Mariam
 Midnite
 SOJA

**clearly i have different taste in music than a lot of others on here, but i think that the diversity of the line-up was one of the real strengths of the Virgin Festival and i hope that tradition will continue.  (would love to see more reggae, latin, world music flavors - and a few good hip-hop acts as well!)

Oh look, another wish list: Wire, The Books, Autechre, The The, Tommy Keene, The Hives, fennesz, David Sylvian, Glenn Branca, Dälek, The Cramps, Noxagt, Moog Cookbook (would they tour?), Bangles, The Saints, Stereolab, Mission of Burma, Pansonic....

And here's a dream suggestion, kind of a "roots of trance" act for the dance tent: Steve Reich and Musicians (or Ensemble Modern) performing "Music for 18 Musicians."

I second on the cramps, AC/DC, and Massive Attack!!!!

I think it would be rad to get new order, but someone told me that they're bad live.

How about for the rave tent we get the chemical brothers and underworld. that would be amazing.

Yeah along with Slowdive!

But, alas, that will never happen; however, I would be quite happy with Massive Attack along with Portishead. God Is An Astronaut (http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=9813061) would be good too. I've heard nothing but very good reports regarding their live shows.
