Title: Band of Horses Roll Call
Post by: Darth Ed on August 07, 2007, 12:35:00 am
Anyone else going to the Band of Horses show at the 9:30 Club? I'll be there. I know their Black Cat show last year didn't exactly get rave reviews, but I missed out then.

Are the opening bands, Love As Laughter and A Decent Animal, worth checking out?

I'll be there... and hoping it's better than last year's black cat show indeed.

Looking forward to it.  Even though I'm trying to keep my expectations low after some of the comments about their live show.

Don't know about Decent Animal, but Love as Laughter  is great...at least on record.  I haven't seen them in years, but even if they play one song off of The Grek's Bring Gifts, it can't be all bad.

I'd like to be there. Seeing some of their shows on You Tube, I would expect them to be pretty good live.

Make sure to bring your camera phone for "The Funeral".

You beat me to it in the time it took me to post those links...

He reacted poorly but I don't know that I disagree with too much since I get tired of people getting out of control with cameras at shows.  Are you there to watch or document?  There is a balance to strike and lots of people don't seem to know where the line is.

don't miss love as laughter. really, really great band. and as long as people shut the fuck up -- that was the main problem with the show at black cat last year -- BOH should be fine.

Yeah it wasn't really BOH's fault the Black Cat show was so crappy.  It was by far the show with the most crowd talking during a headliner I've ever been to.

So you're saying they weren't good enough to inspire the crowd to keep quiet?

i have no idea if this was the case at the BC show, the problem is that sometimes no amount of talent will shut up a crowd of scenesters who are at a show b/c pitchfork/WaPo/etc said it was the place to be that night... they are there to see and been seen, be heard but not hear.  they were never there for the music, other than "that one grey's anatomy song" (at which point they pull out the camera...)

the worse show of this type that i experienced was massive attack.  jocks around me on the floor were yelling about their fantasy baseball results.  i was about to leave the show because the talking was ruining it for me, luckily the GF got me to check out the balcony and we found a decent spot to enjoy the rest of the show.

i had a blast at the show.  i loved that they played mostly old songs, since i dont know any of the new songs.  the only complaint i had is th esame that was posted about last time.
that is, fucking assholes talking.  who th efuck pays money to go to a show and sit there and talk the whole time?  i understand between bands, and even between songs, but damn... the kids near me would not shut up.  me and the gf hadto relocate a couple of songs in because of some dipshits being loud.  You would think the only sold out crowd in their tour would be there to see the band, not to discuss whatever petty dumb shit these asses wer etalking about.
all in all, i give the show a solid 9 out of ten.  hopefully they come back for another show after the cd drops.  the new songs were really good and i think the new one might be one of my favorite cds of the year.

I thought this was a fantastic show! Band of Horses far exceeded my expectations. It certainly helped that the audience was really into their performance, which resulted in a feedback loop with the band. They seemed to be enjoying themselves just as much as the audience around me.

I only got there in time to see the last two songs of A Decent Animal's set. They sounded pretty good with lots of good energy. The crowd seemed to enjoy them.

The audience was almost completely dead for Love As Laughter though. I didn't care for them at first either. The lead singer screamed through most of their first two songs instead of singing. His vocals were pretty week, but I eventually came to appreciate a certain Dylan-esque quality to his vocals on some of their better songs. Their instrument playing are what really won me over though. Their drummer was fabulous, the bassist was excellent, and the lead singer's guitar playing was very good. When a couple BOH guys played with them on several songs, they sounded pretty good. The crowd didn't seem to appreciate it though, which had me worried about their reaction to BOH's set, but my worries were ultimately unfounded.

i thought the show was ok at best.  all their songs started to sound the same after a while and the bass was way too loud from where i was standing.  meh.

i thought BOH sounded alright, but i just wasn't completely feeling it. doesn't really pack much of a punch and that chirpy voice can get a bit tiresome. i left after about 7 songs because i had a feeling it was going to be barry's night. glad i made that choice.

i adore love as laughter but i doubt they made many new fans last night. still some pretty good ragged indie rock with nice guitar work.

for our resident sociologist hoya: during LAL's set i was standing behind a guy wearing a "beauty is in the hand of the beerholder" t-shirt and next to a dude in a backwards hat telling his friend about these "awesome strippers" he had seen over the weekend.

Meh, I thought they played it kind of safe.  I enjoyed the show, but nothing to write home about.

The show didn't really do anything for me, except for The Funeral song. I wish they'd do more with the songs...instead, they played it safe. The new songs were alright. Definitely won't see them again anytime soon.

I thought it was incredible. A big improvement over the Black Cat show. Does anyone know the names of the last two songs?

They were both covers and the last one was Otis Redding I think.

That show undoubtedly was one of the top 5 worst shows I've seen at the 930 club in years.

 Uninspired, boring crap.

Wow. Quite the disparity here. I wonder if we were all at the same concert. Maybe it's just that I had low expectations going in.

I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.  They seemed to be having a lot of fun as a result of a pretty responsive crowd.  It wasn't the best show I've seen recently, but it was nowhere near as bad as some seem to want to portray.

Jesus, there were a lot of broken strings. Overall, a solid show from a good band. What most impressed me was the sound; from where I was at, each instrument was clear and powerful. Love As Laughter was equally good in performance and sound. I enjoyed A Decent Animal, but they were kind of the usual, forgettable opener. I doubt in a year I'll being saying to a friend, "Dude, remember when A Decent Animal opened for Band of Horses?"

You know, if the club really wanted to sell some t-shirts...
