Title: Sick of people with cameras at concerts...
Post by: monoceros1980 on March 14, 2006, 05:26:00 am
Honestly...How many memories do you need??? What exactly are people doing with the hundreds of poor quality pics of singers??? I recently went to the James Blunt Concert(3/13/06)...James put on a great show..I was at least 15 feet from the stage in the sold out crowd...The stage is set high enough that i should be able to see perfomers, however due to everyone filming the show with their digital cameras, snapping pictures and recording the songs with their cell phones I could barely see him..I would say that I am not short.. The person in front of me happen to be asian and living up to the stereo-typical asian took about 100 pictures and videos of James Blunt..after recording each one he would then watch it on the camera leaning back in the process..so close in fact i could breath down the back of his neck,,which i did to get him to move forward multiple times...not only was his hands in the air filming and snapping photos his hair was out of a anime film blocking my view... the only time i truly saw James was when the asian guy in front of me would bend down and kiss his girl friend...thank god that was often...I honestly dont think he saw much of the show between recording and  kissing his girlfriend...honestly how many pictures do you need?....people act like they are never going to remember the concert...like the 930 club is going to "flashy thing us"(men in black) as we leave the concert...never to remember the concert again..for the most part i like the club..it was my first experience there... i would certainly go back for another concert...

well, i don't know about these people, but you'll have to excuse those of us that do actually take photography classes and who are actually taking good pictures.

i know that if i was taking shit pictures, iwouldn't even bother.  but at least i'm not.

Hey, I don't complain about people seeing live shows of shitty singer-songwriters, but that's just me.

But if I ever see James Blunt, I'd probably throw him a sandwich..or two.  ;)

yeah the whole camera phones fad is getting to be a bit much and i fear it's only going to get worse... at some point whiney digital camera owners are going to start moaning to venues/artists that why can't they take pictures when all cameraphone sheep can... and of course venues will have a hard time taking those all important camera phones from people seeing as god forbid one missses any important calls at a show.

maybe artists should only allow pictures to be taken during the first couple of songs or the encores, but of course that would never work as rules are meant to broken by the me generation...

hopefully the fad will fade soon and sheep find some other way to annoy everyone around them.

is this another thing we should add to the list of things people should not do at concerts.

 1. talk
 2. smoke
 3. take pictures
 4. wear hats

 anything else?

i'll go with bringing drunken loudmouth sorostitute/ex-sorostitute bitches who have no interest in the show and like to tell the people around them as much.  you ever have one of these things around you?  i guess it is sort of a variation on #1 from the quote but on steroids.

well i take pics for art, and use them in my art. although i know that if im not close enough for a good image i wont was the time. i have a good camera and takes great pics when close, and i do hate when people with cell phones take 20+ pics. PEOPLE YOU MUST KNOW that your little cell phone camera will only be good to blow up at a 4x6 if that! But I do respect the fans, and the artist and know that people do want to watch a show and not my flash.

it's not a matter of what should be allowed and not allowed in every case it's a matter of moderation and manners... and clearily there is a segment of the concert going population who think they are the ones in attendence and they'll do what they damnwell please at the expense of those around them... and because it requires laws/rules to enforce basic common sense in the US, (i.e. did you know hot coffee might burn you) then a camera phone ban maybe required.

This kills me, because some of those folks aren't even really experiencing the show -- it's all happening on a tiny LED screen.

Also, I've noticed lately that the folks up near the front taking pics are causing these odd red glows on the singers for a few seconds at a time -- it's the red eye "pre-flash" and it drives me nuts.  When Emily Haines was leaning in to the audience, it was non-stop.

I have an idea that might work, at least for people who just want the photos. (I understand that people photographing the show for artistic purposes might need an exception...
How about hiring an official club photographer, who will share the photos online? If necessary, charge a very small fee for access to them, then ban other cameras. Maybe too much of a pain to enforce, but I would love to have good photos of the shows I attend without the hassle of doing it myself, and without fighting for floor space with the "rock-arazzi".

that might work for the people who just want to rememeber the show. but a true artist wants a og. photograph that cant just be bought by the masses.

i realize that which is why the situation will get worse before it gets better.... at one point the club was taking away cellphone cameras upon entrance, but since it's become something people just can't live without then common sense needs to kick in...

i remember all the complaining recently when movie theater owners were considering installing mobile phone blocking technology, how it would prevent someone on call from getting that all important phone call, etc.  thing is at one point doctors, etc would check-in, leave a pager, etc with a theater who would then go to that person's seat in case of an emergency.  now granted that isn't feasible at the 9:30 club, but people functioned without cellphones for decades, why can't people do it now for a couple hours.

take a couple pictures and put it away... oh wait that makes to much sense..

Just a guess, but a "true artist" probably wouldn't take pictures with a camera phone.

I don't see what the big deal with people taking photos at concerts are... there are a million things I can think of more annoying than that.

I mean, let's face it, you've gotta start from the baseline that people are annoying just by virtue of being there.

On the other hand, this seems like a good opportunity to pimp my photo blog.  :)

Hmmm maybe you're not 21 but errr um I think there's been plenty of times people have not remembered the concert after a night of drinking at the 930 Club.

My little camera phone happens to get pretty damn good quality pics at 2 megapixels which is the same as my bulky digital camera. So, why carry around the extra thing to worry about?

Kosmo you're right because camera phones are getting more and more higher quality res. on them. I just saw a Samsung that does 10 megapixels  :)

maybe they just need to setup picture taker sections, like they do for tapers in the back of the club... then confiscate cameras from those breaking the rules...

and it is a annoying going to a show and seeing a sea of blue glowing objects hoisted in the air for the entire show... it would be less of a problem if people took one or two pictures and be done with it... unless you are a Madonna concert what the bands is wearing at the beginning of the show isn't likely to change until the encore... they might get a little sweat drenched.

My problem with the photographers, is that they will stick their arms up in the air to get that shot.  But it takes them 5 minutes blocking everyones view to do so.  Very very annoying.

For pro photography the club usually just lets the photographer take pictures for the first song or three, then no more.  Maybe the same rule with the camera phones.  Let it be known at the door if you are caught taking flash shots (non flash don't really stick out) after that point your phone will be confiscated.  That might work but might piss people off more than the amount it saves in flashes.  Again, people have to realize how to work with others, they are not the only one at the concert.

...wow.  made my day, right there.  you did.

i have a cameraphone with really a very good camera, but i pretty much stopped taking pics with it at shows because i came accross some pictures on websites of the artists where i could see my cell phone.  and then, i felt horribly like That Guy, and realized it was ridiculous.

as for other people taking pictures at concerts...what's it to you?  yeah, it's kind of annoying when people stick their arms in the air for ten minutes trying to get a good shot, but most people don't do that.  if i need to go up, i'll do it for a couple of seconds.  i've gotten a ton of really cool, powerful photographs at concerts and i enjoy taking pictures of artists.

also, flashes really aren't always necessary.
i've been to some shows where the pictures turned out much better without the flash on, just due to all the colored lighting that the club already provides.

if you guys really want to complain; go to a show with the Cobrasnake.  he is ALL up in everyone's grill, and he isn't using a little digital camera, either...it's this huge thing.  but he's awesome and takes great pictures, so you know what?  more power to him.

music is a form of artistic expression, as is photography, and i'm really surprised at how intolerant some people on here are of people that are just trying to take quality pictures.

There's nothing worse than band photos taken with flash period. Unless you know how to adjust the shutter speeds, etc they're going to look like a band playing at the Goldstein's Bar Mitzvah.

Here (http://ambienteye.com/onstage.php) is a perfect example of killer photos taken with and without flash at shows. Sure, I'm pimping her work out because she does good work and there's also pics of me  :)  She's taken pics at the 930 club on numerous occassions as well.

ok so "most" people don't spend the entire concert taking photos with their phones... however, it's that small percentage that insist on taking photos through out the concert that ruin for those around them... at least one other forum member will agree with me on this point, the secret machines show at that black cat was almost ruined by the idiot who felt the need to take pictures of the entire show while standing front and center.  pictures of a band that barely moves on stage, was cloaked in smoke and had lights shining on the audience.  if professionals with photo passes are only allowed to take pictures for one or two songs, then audience members should use the same courtesy for the band and the rest of the audience... tuesday is the new friday

I don't know anyone who got a camera phone because they wanted the camera.  Instead, when it's time to upgrade (just due to time), many of the new promotional phones have cameras.  I'd bet that more new phones have cameras than don't.

i disagree with the idea of a fee-collecting club photog. some of us are enlisted to take pics of shows, not just for our personal enjoyment but for professional use. and besides, i think it's, like most things we complain about, it requires a certain amount of respect and acknowledgment of the crowd around you. so...obviously there are people who will always be pains in the asses with their camera phones/cameras, just like there are always going to be those pains in the asses who talk loudly during shows and dance like whirling dervishes or whatever.

Actually I bought my phone because of the camera  :)

My phone had been stolen when we played in NYC and I had just got it 4-5 months prior to that so I didn't get any promo pricing break  :(   My bulky digital camera is 2 megapixels. I saw a phone that had the 2 megapixels camera on it, plus the added fact of being able to put a 512MB memory card in it made it the ultimate choice for me. I've got about 100 songs on it and a quality camera.  No need to always tote around an iPod and digital camera now when it's all rolled into one.

I do agree, I'm not a fan of people taking pics all show and especially those that hold their phones up to record or let their friends listen to the show. Yeah that's gotta sound really good coming across that mic on the phone. Isn't it bad enough to hear someone talk in the wind, what makes someone think at 110dB of sound pushing out a club system it's going to sound anything worth hearing?

Isn't it bad enough to hear someone talk in the wind, what makes someone think at 110dB of sound pushing out a club system it's going to sound anything worth hearing?

because, sometimes it does.  i've had people leave me phone messages from shows and you can hear everything, perfectly...

I really doubt they were standing 4 rows back from the stage at the 930 Club while doing it. Sure they could be at the show and moved to a more quite area and the music is still getting picked up, but unless it's some whimpy band, it's going to be way to loud for it to be clear.

Were they taking still pictures or videotaping the show?

You are so right!

I will admit that when someone spends most of a concert with their arms raised holding objects, it does get annoying. But a few minutes, a few times here and there, is nothing to complain about. It's nothing but more nits for the nitpickers.

Sadly, this is the case for me on a number of occasions. That Pogues show got a little blurry at the end (for obvious reasons). I wish I had a picture of this alleged "snow" everyone keeps talking about...

Was there a life-sized cardboard cutout of Kirstie McColl?
