What would you music experts say are the top 10 rock songs of the 70s? And by rock, I mean songs that RAWK, not obscure room-clearing prog-rock.
-
Sufragette City for sure.
-
I agree there'd have to be some Bowie on the list...
here are some of the ones I came up with without much thought:
Fat Bottom Girls -- Queen
Hot Blooded -- Foreigner
More Than A Feeling -- Boston
Dream On by Aerosmith
Detroit Rock City -- KISS
All Right Now -- Free
Rock N Roll All Night by KISS
Can't You Hear Me Knockin' by The Rolling Stones
You Shook Me All Night Long -- AC/DC
Sweet Emtotion -- Aerosmith
Rebel, Rebel -- David Bowie
-
"You Shook Me All Night Long" is from 1981.
essential '70s rock (bands, no songs):
black sabbath
deep purple
grand funk railroad
thin lizzy
UFO
AC/DC
sweet
slade
mott the hoople
t rex
david bowie
alice cooper
blue oyster cult
mountain
hawkwind
the pink fairies
dust
sir lord baltimore
leafhound
cactus
pentagram
-
Thanks for pointing out my AC/DC error.
I want songs, not bands! Bands is too easy.
-
black sabbath- ironman
deep purple- smoke on the water
aerosmith- dream on
van halen- runnin with the devil
kiss- rock and roll all nite
led zeppelin- <insert song here>
blue oyster cult- don't fear the reaper
lynyrd skynyrd- free bird
jethro tull- aqualung
journey- wheel in the sky
it was hard not including such luminaries as steely dan, boston, early genesis as well as punk. . but you wanted rawk. but man, i really wanted to add "25 Or 6 to 4"
-
25 or 6 to 4 rawks... even though some would say it's not rawk...
great list. Although for Journey I think I'd chose "Feeling That Way/Anytime" over "Wheel in the Sky."

NY Dolls - Personality Crisis
Hawkwind - Orgone Accumulator
Public Image - Death Disco
T. Rex - 20th Century Boy
Wire - I Am the Fly

Fuck, yeah! Not so much their later, more Bryan Ferry controlled material but their first 5 or so albums definitely rocked.
It's too hard for me to come up with a short list like that from that long ago off the top of my head since there was so much but my list would probably include something by some of the following musicians.
Roxy Music
Long John Baldry
Sex Pistols
Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
Can - Mother Sky
Hawkwind - (Something from Quark, Strangeness And Charm)
X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage, Up Yours
The Ramones
Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action
Lou Reed
Iggy Pop
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizo Man
To be honest, I would probably have to break my list in half to reflect early and late since there is so much music and I myself changed along with the music. There is a whole lot missing from the early 70s that I could include that should be represented (and can't remember right now) like...
Early Fleetwood Mac (BEFORE crap-ass Buckingham & Nicks joined them)
Something from the 1st or 2nd Alice Cooper ablum which was BEFORE that Love It to Death black and white cover album most of you are probably thinking of.
The Groundhogs
-
Bloodrock-Melvin Laid an Egg
-
London Calling
White Man in Hammersmith Palais
Born on the Bayou
Green River
Six other songs by CCR, your pick
-
Free Ride (Edgar Winter)
Smokin' In The Boys' Room (Brownsville Station)
Once Bitten Twice Shy (Ian Hunter)
Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo (Rick Derringer)
Surrender (Cheap Trick)
Mama Kin (Aerosmith)
-

These songs are from the 60s. They released some music in the 70s but probably most of what you are thinking of is from the late 60s. But I fully agree that they put out some great, rocking music that is just as strong today as it was back then.
-
Ram Jam - Black Betty
Ted Nugent - Motor City Madhouse
Edgar Winter - Frankenstein
Stillwater - Fever Dog
Cheap Trick - Surrender
Led Zeppelin - Immingrant Song
Foghat - Slow Ride
Bad Company - Feel Lke Makin' Love
ZZ Top - Tush
The Dictators - I Live For Cars and Girls
The Runaways - Cherry Bomb
-
Indeed, you are right. Bayou and Green River were both 1969. But they probably didn't come on in my upstate NY redneck town until 1970. :)

Cosmo's Factory came out in the summer of 70 and is right up there with my favorite CCR:
"travelin' band"
"lookin' out my back door" (can't be separated now from 'the big lebowski', makes it even better)
"who'll stop the rain"
"long as i can see the light"

Yeah, I know but, in my opinion, they just don't stand up to their earlier works. Their balls were shrinking by then. But, like I said, that's just my opinion.
Then again, going back to Rhett's post, it all depends on whether or not he'd include it on this list since that's what this all goes back to.
