Bearman, what are you trying to do to me?!?!? I really wanted to skip this show...but LOOK at that SETLIST.
-
What did you expect the setlist to look like? A Doors cover show?
-
Smarty pants -- it's unusual to see so much from the first few albums -- usually you get one or two of these, not all of 'em:
The Back Of Love
Never Stop
Villiers Terrace
Rescue
The Cutter
Do It Clean
-
They've been playing Do It Clean almost every night on the current tour, which they haven't played since 2001. That is my fave Echo song, one of my ALL-time favorite songs. The live version blows me away every time. I'm so there, and Bags, you have to come as well!
-
What exactly does "Do it Clean" mean?
-
Same thing as the lyrics to "Louie Louie", or "Tutti Frutti". It just sounds good.

Believe it or not, Louie, Louie actually means something. It's an old Jamacian sea shanty about a woman named Louise that the sailor is singing farewell to.
-
Got a copy of the lyrics?
-
Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go
Fine little girl waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home
CHORUS
Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, constantly
On that ship, I dream she's there
I smell the rose in her hair.
CHORUS
Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!
GUITAR SOLO
See Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
Tell her I'll never leave again
CHORUS
Let's take it on outa here now
Let's go!!
-
Thank you, Chaz. ;)
(But I got the direction he was sailing wrong.)
Many years ago, while in Jamaica I spent some time hanging out with a Bahamian Voodoo priestess and her boyfriend who was originally from Norway but was now living in Jamaica. This man was a sailor and I mean the real deal from the High Seas. Believe me, I know Norwegian accents well and this guy had something totally different. Pure High Seas living mixed with Jamaican patois. Think Popeye with a much, much heavier accent including the use of the word 'me' as it's used in this song. After this experience, that song started becoming much more clear to my ears...except that I don't think that the band even knew all of the correct words and faked it at times too like everyone else. LOL. I know there is a false start at one point. Great song though.

The Cutter and Do It Clean are my faves...oy vey, I'll rest this weekend so I can do Echo and We Are Scientists.
-
Arghhh!!! I can hardly wait! Might go to Philly as well.
-
Too bad same night as Calexico...
The only reason I'm picking Calexico is that Echo and the Bunnymen kinda bored me last year...I don't wanna be bored again ;)
-
brightblack morning light and espers at dc9 will likely be better than echo and the bunnymen and calexico combined. and i like both of those bands! but they are about, oh, 22 and, 7/8 years past their primes, respectively.
-
That last Echo show at the Black Cat was underwhelming, but I have a feeling that this will be a much better show. I just wouldn't miss Will Sergeant playing "the Killing Moon" for anything. I prefer Calexico when they're playing with Iron and Wine anyway.
-
I've been seeing Echo & The Bunnyman in the strangest of places lately. Last week when I was at Dunkin' Donuts ordering a Light Latte I espied Echo & The Bunnyman. They were disguised as blueberry jelly donuts and they were hiding out in the display case. They must have thought that they were doing a good job at camouflaging themselves, but I spotted 'em right away.

Bummin' I have to miss this. What songs are they mixing into Do It Clean these days?
-
I'm not sure, but there's always lyrics of "Sex Machine" and "All You Need Is Love".
-
Hey, now that I've seen a playlist and listened to all of Crocodiles, Porcupine and Ocean Rain -- show's sold out. If anyone hears of an extra ticket, lemme know.

I listened to a Brightblack Morning Light song about a week ago and liked it a lot. I may have to check out that show.
-
Bags, let's talk on Monday, I might be able to hook you up.

Cool. If it works, it works. Thanks...
-
I got shut out of tickets 3 days ago. If anyone else knows of any floating about, please let me know...thanks!

I'm probably way off, but I always took the obvious interpretation that it was about an assassin. As in, kill the guy, but do it clean. I always thought the line "here, there, nowhere" was in reference to the victim being vulnerable to the assassin everywhere he goes and not being able to see him.
-
So...anyone going tonight?

Great show last night. Here's the setlist (I have it at home, but I think this is everything):
Going Up
Show of Strength
Stormy Weather
Seven Seas
Bring on the Dancing Horses
the Disease
Scissors in the Sand
All That Jazz
The Back of Love
All My Colours (Zimbo)
The Killing Moon
Do It Clean
Never Stop
Villiers Terrace/Roadhouse Blues
Rescue
The Cutter
-----------------
Nothing Lasts Forever/Walk on the Wild Side
Lips Like Sugar
-----------------
Ocean Rain
Over the Wall was supposed to be played before Ocean rain, but the band went on at 11pm and finished up at 12:30. Bags, great to see you...I managed to get a cab home (after getting in one and then being told that he was only going to Virginia), then I found I had no power once I got there. Argh...anyway, all in all, a better show than the one in November. I was just happy to hear Do It Clean again.
-
Thanks to bearman I not only saw the show, but was 10 feet from dear Ian and 6 feet from Will Sargent.
"Do It Clean" made it all worthwhile, definitely the best song played.
The opener, BoysKillBoys or something like tht, sounded pretty good except that it was WAY too loud, so I really just wanted them off the stage. I'd like to check them out at normal volumes.
Glad I made it out. Thanks again, bearman!!!
-
I totally agree..."Do It Clean" made my night! Plus, it's so great to watch Will play guitar. I never get tired of watching him play "the Killing Moon" or "Ocean Rain". Great stuff...glad that it worked out Bags. I suspect a lot of people didn't make it out to the show because of the rain.
-
I planted myself in front of Will to watch his guitar mastery. I was about 5 people deep. I let a few shorties in front of me. It must suck being short at GA shows. That is the 2nd show at the Black Cat where Ian's voice sounded great!
I thought Boy Kill Boy were pretty good as well. I'll definitely check out their album when it is released in the states.
-
Hope it was better than their hfstival performance lol

-
Oh GOD...that was the WORST. A total trainwreck. "Me voice is fucked." I'll say.
-
HFStival was a disappointment. He did make attempts to go on with the appearance but it was clear his voice was completely shot. Probably would have been better for them not to even attempt to play that day.
-
Funny thing is that 2 nights earlier in Philly they were awesome, one of the best times I've seen them.
-
That flip of the mic when he left was hysterical. Very Liam-esque....
-
More like he was drunk off his ass for the festival.. that wasn't water in his water bottle on stage.
-
No, but being drunk is going to mess up your voice THAT much, especially when you're a seasoned pro like Ian.
-
jimmy of jimmies chicken shack sez he got ian f'd up before the whfs show and feels responsible for ian's problems. at the bc it was funny seeing ian flicking his finished (but still lit) cigarettes toward the stage techs (stage right) and watching them run out of the way. best sound i have ever heard at the bc.

That's funny...It wasn't Jimmie who got him drunk. It WAS Chicken Shack's booze that contributed to Mac's issues--girlfriend troubles--and yes, his voice was already shot--however it wasn't Jimmie himself who egged him along. It was another JCS bandmember. I was there.
He also had issues keeping his pants on and asked my sister and I if we had a safety pin. He's definitely an entertaining character, and very, very nice. Apparently he and the girlfriend have reconciled and all is well now.

Actually it was tea with honey and lemon. Trust me he was already drunk enough by then...
