Title: just got a new blu ray player for free through credit ca
Post by: walkonby on October 28, 2008, 01:59:00 pm
not sure if i am mad or not.  it was free, and blu ray is neato and all i guess; new age of the reformed generation.  but i have so many dvds, and wonderful box sets - harry potter/lord of the rings/twin peaks, just to name a few of my hundreds.  now i have to buy them again?  those bastards.  sorry, but i was just venting away the days that soon will lead me to say, "dvds . . . who buys those anymore?"

"read the tv guide, don't need a tv." - grandpa from the lost boys.

have not had cable for three years, but have three tvs with various dvds/vcrs/video games on them.  no tv? now that is just crazy.

Hahah. Same here except I don't have any video games. Just not interested. Haven't had cable tv for at least a good 10 years now. When I do see it at my mother's place or elsewhere, I rarely ever see anything worth even turning the set on let alone paying ridiculous rates for. I don't watch local tv either so I'm fully off the idiot box. Now, if they vastly improve my choices of viewing along with better rates, I'm screwed.

I've never  paid for cable tv.

 I'm full of italics today.

well you don't have to buy the LOTR DVDs again just yet...

i've only had my blu-ray player for awhile, but they do upscale stand def nicely and it's doubtful they'll do high def upgrade to older tv shows... i would assume that stuff saved to video tape isn't going to be at the same quality as film so converting them to a high definition isn't going to improve the picture much...  movies on the other hand may benefit to hd transfer...  sound quality will improve in the new format

All good points, Kosmo.

Don't worry about replacing anything Walkonby. There will be plenty of new stuff for you to add to your library. Only replace something dearly loved that you actually watch occassionaly and think would benefit from the enhancement. Even then, wait for a good sale. The economy sucks so much you are bound to find one of those, especially with Christmas coming up.

Read last night that they expect tvs (some particular sort but I'm claiming pretty much all of them) to have drastic cuts in prices soon. Think they may have noted early sometime in 2009. The workhorse of a monitor for my desktop died about a month or so ago. Hoping I can find something worth hooking up my tower to that can be used easily for other viewing. All inexpensive and easy to use. Don't have a lot to add to it anyway.

Twin Peaks was awesome. The other two boxsets listed are nerd shit.

we've got the twin peaks dvds... and will likely upgrade LOTR if it ever comes out... don't have any of the potter films as we holding out for the uber deluxe boxset after all the films come out.. given hollywood's instance of deluxifying everything it's kinda silly to buy anything...  they even came out with a deluxe version of freaks and geeks this week..

Having bought Twin Peaks on VHS and DVD twice (the originally released two parter box set, the import pilot, and the gold box) I don't think I'd buy it again on blu ray...

ooh, i'm getting all excited everytime i go down the aisles of target or walmart where the blu-rays are.  the price comparisons with overstock and deepdiscountdvd.com.  the titles to tempt me, such as christmas story (ultimate coll. ed.) / godfather collection / paprika / nin (beside you in time) / die zauberflote / last emporer / dark knight / shawshank with bonus book / i am legend (three disk) and many more.  my first blu-ray purchase was last night and was double disk iron man.  i was like a kid as i stared at it in my cart around the store.  now i know why these bastards can get away with changing technology every ten years or so; you forget that it's fun.

I really like my blu ray player.  To me the audio side is just as compelling a reason to upgrade to the format as the improved video.  But to be able to really take advantage of new audio formats you need to spend some bucks on a receiver/preamp than can process them, as well as have decent speakers that can do them justice.

What kind of player did you get?

player - sony s550
tv - sony bravia bigsomething or otherincher

i've heard about all these extra things for your blu-ray experiences, and would love to finally get into that whole speakers around the room thing.  what would chaz suggest if chaz does suggest what he suggests.

Well that would depend on how much you wanted to spend.  Do you already have a home theater receiver or are you starting from scratch?  If you pm me a budget I could give you some suggestions.

DVD's are great, but if you've got a system that can let blu ray shine it blows DVD away for picture and sound.  But I'm really nerdy like that...it's not for everyone.

I have a blu-ray player (well...ps3) but don't really buy blu-ray DVDs.  I just don't see the point yet.  If I had a larger TV (currently have 32 inch) maybe.  But it does make loaning DVDs to people pretty much impossible since not that many people i know have blu-ray players.  It's pretty much a dead format IMHO.  Downloadable / Digital Distribution is where its at.

Blu-Ray just seems like a huge money sink... you've gotta upgrade both the TV and the sound system to experience it properly, right?

Well, if you have a CRT tv then yeah, youâ??ll have to buy more get the benefits.  In my system I was able to drop in blu ray player and get all the benefits without buying anything else.

But if you have an HDTV (720p/1080i are more than adequate) youâ??re good to go as far as taking advantage of the improvements in picture quality.  Though if your set is under 37 or 42 inches I donâ??t think itâ??s really worth it.

Audio is trickier.  Not all AV receivers are capable or playing back the new hi res audio codecs being used, and if you have some crappy home theater in a box speakers or some tinny junky overpriced bose package it wonâ??t really matter anyway.

Being a music nut I have a good system and my HT setup is an extension of that.  Itâ??s not for everyone.  Some people could give a hoot about sound quality; all that matters to many is a good picture.  To me when Iâ??m watching a move what Iâ??m hearing is almost as important as what Iâ??m seeing.  Not an easy or cheap hobbyâ?¦just ask my wife!
