Title: Shafted
Post by: vansmack on March 14, 2006, 12:30:00 pm
Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef in the Comedy Central cartoon South Park, says he's leaving the show  because of its attacks on religion. (http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_3598927)

"Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed. 'There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins,' the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"South Park co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday, saying, 'This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology ... He has no problem - and he's cashed plenty of checks - with our show making fun of Christians.'"

why are you always so snide and intolerant towards xenophobes? it's not like they chose to be idiots, it's just a combination of nature and nurture

That was a great piece.  I was surprised how much access the writer got to the actual "church".

I hadn't seen that...fascinating.  Thanks for the link, ggw.

I'm from Clearwater (went to middle school in Clearwater, lived in Largo for anyone needing specificity).  I remember when John Travolta was arresteed for disorderly behavior back in the late 70s, early 80s.  In town for Scientology, of course.  The church has bought up so much property -- including some really stellar historical property (like the Fort Harrison Hotel), it's a little scary.  We grew up believing it to be a cult.
