Fill In The Blank:
When I went to see (blank), I didn't expect to see (blank!)
-
When I went to see Craig David at the 930 club, I didnt expect tweet to be the support act. I really didnt expect Missy Elliot walking on stage during her set.
-
when i went to see Freya (ex earth crisis members) i didn't expect to see Age of Ruin.
when i went to see MM i didn't expect to see that many hot chicks or come the closest to a boner at a concert to his whores...
-
to hfstical warmup show at the 9:30 club with scott weiland, daniel lanios and tommy keene i didn't expect to see emmylou harris come on stage to sing with daniel lanois.
r.e.m. with the three o'clock... the replacements came on as a suprise addition. paul ended up playing drums for a drunken take on "if i only had a brain"
-
when i went to the mars volta show i didnt expect it to bee so contrived, long-winded, and boring.
-
when I went to see Kristin Hersh, John Doe and Grant Lee Phillips I did not expect Bob Mould to come on stage and do a song with them, hardly the biggest shocker in the world, but it was cool
-
when I saw the Flaming Lips in Tennessee, I didn't expect Neil-Feckin'-Young to show up for a 2nd set rendition of the Dark Side of the Moon. Whoa.
-
when i saw the locust at the black cat i didn't expect to be so scared by their presence that i wanted to go home and cry.
-
when i saw the 1996 new years show at the club, i didn't expect to see seth crowd surfing during jon spencer blues explosion ... or david yow frenching evilsatan in the backbar.

You're killing me, Kosmo. I just got "Sixteen Tambourines" on CD and I cannot stop listening to it. With REM and the Replacements? I might have passed out.

Or Norm stage-diving!

When I went to see Soul Brains at 9:30 a few weeks ago, I didn't expect it to suck so bad.
Well, maybe a part of me did.
-
When I went to see the Furthur Festival in 2000, I didn't expect Hanson to come out and sit in for a few songs. I was also surprised that they were pretty good.
When I saw Springsteen in '99, I didn't expect Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Bruce Hornsby to sit in for the encores.
When I saw REM in '99, I didn't expect to see Patti Smith come out and sing on "E-Bow the Letter".
When I saw REM this past October, I didn't expect Bill Berry to come onstage, sing backup on "Radio Free Europe" and play drums on "Permanent Vacation".
-
When I went to see Billy Bragg and Wilco singing all that Arlo Guthrie stuff I didn't expect to be subjected to such utter utter shite.
When I went to see Badly Drawn Boy I didn't expect to See Andy Rourke on Bass.
When I went to an HFS'tival I didn't expect to be as blown away by Primus as I was.

I believe that would be *Woody* Guthrie. Big difference, there.
-
When I went to see Railroad Jerk in Philly in 95 or so, I didn't expect REM and Grant Lee Buffalo to show up at the club and keep the place open til 3 in the morning for an All-Star Jam.

Either way, it was crap..and the downfall of an excellent singer-songwriter.
-
I'm sure Billy Bragg himself would disagree with you, as would numerous critics.
-
Billy Bragg's descent into mediocrity predated his working with Wilco by 10 years with the release of Worker's Playtime in 1998. From that album on, his work has been hit and miss, whereas his first two albums were solid throughout.
I think a majority of music lovers would agree that Wilco managed to recover quite nicely from their brush with Mr. Bragg based on their fine followups, Summer Teeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Personally couldn't give a toss about Wilco, they've been complete bobbins from day one...they are responsible for making Billy Bragg shite though, and that is unforgiveable....you are right that the first two albums are his best work, I'll give you that.
-
When I went to see Third Eye Blind, I didn't expect to see the 9:30 Club staff making fun of me!

if your Billy Bragg can be made "shite" by a band as purportedly shitty as you say Wilco is, then that makes him sound pretty weak

When I went to the Cracker show, I didn't expect to spend 8 hours in the Howard University Hospital to give me stitches for a wound suffered from an unprompted beer bottle attack from someone who had drank about 10 too many.

-
When I went to see the Grateful Dead, I didn't expect to see a guy get dragged off by security with his bare ass skinned on the concrete stairs as he defiantly jerked off. (I guess I was naiIve.)
