That's a great article --I had a poster with that photo up in my room sophomore year of college (and beyond). It was one of those huge 3' by 4' posters, dark green background with pink lettering. I would frame that sucker now and put it up in my apartment if I still had it, but after three dorm rooms, that baby was toast.
Is "idolatrously" a word? I like it!
- What's a fives court?
- I agree, lu, great line.

Fives, is a game not unlike squash or raquetball, only it's played using your hand so you wear a glove. The ball is about the size of a squash ball.....so a Fives court is similar to a squash court.
The last time I was by Salford Lads Club was a few years ago on the way home from Old Trafford one Saturday......it's true about the local ruffians, they ride round on bicycles circling just a few yards from you, gives you the feeling you're being observed by sharks before they attack. When I got my camera out to take a photo they all pulled their sweaters up over their heads and cycled away down the street. My sisters boyfriend who was with me and was raised in that area said once they saw the camera they assumed we were coppers.
Funny experience, almost surreal really.

Did you ever play it?
I never did. I think it was banned from my school as it just ended up being a good way to go blind in one eye.

I did play it, got quite good at it too. I had to get the train into Manc town centre to play at the city centre YMCA so it was a royal pain in the arse every Saturday morning....not too many fives courts around, and I never knew SLC had one because I would've gone there instead seeing as I went right past the feck'n place on the way to the YMCA!

I am very glad to see website! :)

Bags, I had that poster from age 16 until I was through with college. I still have it shuffled away with my Charlatans UK, Ride, and New Order posters. My very cool Stone Roses "Fools Gold" poster with John Squire artwork is framed and in my bedroom. :)
