Guess who is number 1? (http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/page/0,10607,1053415,00.html)
((no Dupek, its no Mary J. Bilge :p ))
-
LOL, Mary J Bilge. By the way, what's that about? I saw a lot of threads yesterday called 'Mary J Bilge' by this person.. Herb is it? What's the deal-o about that?
I gotta check out this list.. The no. 40 top act is called 'Selfish Cunt'. This should be innnterresting.
-
i would never have guessed that's who would be no 1......
thank christ it wasn't radiohead..........and how high up the list was coldplay?
very bizarre..............
-
Hmmm...no Oasis, no Idlewild...no Norman Cook...Lists are stupid...especially British ones
-
PJ Harvey shoulda been #1 :)

Well there stars have all fallen..... Very far and very fast, from what I can tell.
Idlewild, well the "indie" bads they focused on were all of the new breed, the coral and British Sea Power. Idlewild could be considered Stalwarts now.

Dupek (aka, Bombay doors, ellis D fleisch Bach, Herb L emma or any other silly name you find), our board joker likes changing all of his topics to render them incomprehensible..... Bilge is moderately amusing.
-
No worse than any other list of this type (except that I knew barely half the artists).
Good to see the Libertines up top.
-
Load 'o' bollocks!
Although I'm surprised someone on the panel was old enough to know who Bowie is. I'm also surprised Badly Drawn Boy didn't make the list, I thought he was pretty big over there.
All these lists are good for is generating conversation. If they did the poll the following week the list would be different. I'd be interested to see were The Beautiful South would be if they were active at the moment. Top 5 guaranteed.

Poormankie, I really dont think so. Where were coldplay? the list was skewed to newer artists, and Blur, Radiohead and Bowie. Although I think The B.S. are a solid band with great tunes, they havent done anything as innovative as almost breaking America like the other three......
I think you would have seen a whole load of bands like idlewild and travis before you got to the beautiful south.

First of all, Coldplay are average at best, although I expected them to be higher seeing as they're one of the flavors, or should I say flavours of the moment seeing as were in Britspeak here.
Bags, B.S. are pretty *uckin huge in the UK. Fasting selling album EVER in fact. (Carry on up the charts)

How in the world did Girls Aloud make that list? They're just a bunch of Pop Idol, no talent, lesbians on crack! They'll almost as bad as Coldplay.

So are Radiohead.

Well, I just finished reading through the list.. and I was surprised by many things. There were also many new names that I will have to check out: I've been hearing some buzz about Goldfrapp lately, and have yet to hear any of their songs. The same goes for The Streets and The Darkness--who the hell are they and what do they sound like? I better take a trip to the record store and find out.
This list finally answers my question: What the hell happened to Portishead? Answer: Beth Gibbons has a solo career. Good--Need to track down her solo record.
I was glad to see my favorites, Spiritualized, Muse, Belle And Sebastian, Blur and The Super Furry Animals on that list (specially the Furries after last night's show). I've so far not been able to care for Coldplay. I read someone somewhere lately call Coldplay 'flu' rock, as if there's something sickly about them. Maybe that's why I don't care for them.
The Coral are astonishing, and deserve to be that high on the list. Haven't been able to track down their second record though.
And I was surprised by No. 1. I was expecting it to be my dearest Radiohead.. but instead, The Libertines! Holy coincidence, Jeebus! I just got 'Up The Bracket' a couple of weeks ago and have been loving the hell out of this record. These boys are cooking something fierce onstage and in the studio. 'Time For Heroes' is a phenomenal song!

Agreed...but Thom Yorke is a little prettier than the slappers in Girls Aloud.

$14, free shipping. As far as I am aware there is no American release day for it. Its good but not as good as their first.
I hate the darkness and like the odd Streets song, but the whole album at once wears me down.

Ok, haha, Radiohead was number 2 and only to a band that wont be around in 4 years.
The Chemical Brothers should have been higher and the darkness SUCK so bad, it makes me want to cry.
The Streets are not better than David Bowie, ever.

bag o shite, blur at 6, no gene, bsp only at 30,no wylie and no puressence, how can that list be taken seriously.... put puressence at no 1
-
It is a bit of an odd list. There were only about 2 or 3 that I wasn't familiar with but a lot of it does seem to be what the record companies are now trying to push in the UK now.
That picture of Robert Wyatt freaked me out! Sort of looks like God has led a hard life. (No wonder, with we fuckers here on Earth!) I use to love his work with Soft Machine and Matching Mole. Also his studio works with the likes of Eno, Roxy Music and other top musicians of the 70s and early 80s. He must have dug himself out of his hole in the ground to resurface and sell some more records as I've been reading his name again lately. Good to see he's back.

just make sure you get .net and the usa site....... for me it always wants to give me the UK or German site, YA? and that works out more expensive and gives stupid top 75s etc.

LISTEN to The Darkness before you buy it! While they're 'mock metal' or whatever, the lead singer is the worst kind of high-pitched screaming metal singer. I find it really tough to take.
Just a warning.
The Streets is like the opposite of that.

Someone's been reading "So You Wanna Be an Indie Rock Expert"...the non-facke version. ;)

Unfortunately I think the beautiful south are more likely to top a list than pureessence.....
I mean what list have pureseence ever topped? The band that had the most inappropriate name. They should be gay euro disco with that name.... that is probably how you picked up on them, right?

I thought Jag wrote the article.
I think Wyatt just had a new album out recently.

Unfortunately, there are tons of UK acts just as bad as them that are extremely popular at this time. You think that US radio is bad? You should hear the shit that's on the radio over here! Worst yet, Britain is ready to crown its new Pop Idol very soon too.

Libertines Guitarist Released From Jail
Pete Doherty, the estranged guitarist from British rock act the Libertines, was released from jail today (Oct. 8). As previously reported, Doherty was recently sentenced to six months in jail after admitting to robbing the home of bandmate Carl Barat. Last week, however, the star's sentence was reduced in Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court to two months.
In a gesture that will be seen to clear the way for Doherty's return to the band, Barat yesterday joined the welcoming party for the guitarist. Doherty was initially ousted in June from the band, which then set off on a European tour without him. "My new songs are all I have, along with my liberty, and everything has to be just right from now on in," he wrote on the fan site Thelibertines.org. "I need to start singing my new songs, and I want to play with other people."
The Libertines recently achieved a career-best No. 11 debut on the U.K. singles chart with the track "Don't Look Back Into the Sun" (Rough Trade). The group's debut album, "Up the Bracket" has sold about 100,000 units, according to a spokesperson.

Guess what happened next?
THE LIBERTINES sensationally reformed on stage last night - the day PETE DOHERTY was released from prison (October 8).
Yesterday morning Pete became a free man after serving one month in jail after pleading guilty to burglary after breaking into bandmate Carl Barat's flat (July 25), while The Libertines were touring in Japan.
Last night, Pete was joined on stage by the rest of the band, Carl included, at the Tap Nâ?? Tin club in Chatham, Kent. Only 200 lucky fans were at the gig. The band's mate Rabbi joined them for versions of 'Sally Brown' and 'Dirty Old Town'.
Is was the bandâ??s first show since Pete failed to turn up for a European tour in May. Until yesterday, Pete and Carl hadnâ??t seen each other since before the court case.
One fan at the gig told NME.COM: "This is the greatest night of my life. They're together. They're happy. The best band in Britain are back! I hope that they can sort out their differences now and get their single to number one. Go Pete, Carl, Gary and John!"
The band played:
â??Seven Deadly Sinsâ??
â??Death On The Stairsâ??
â??Vertigoâ??
â??Time For Heroesâ??
â??The Boy Looked At Johnnyâ??
â??Donâ??t Look Back Into The Sunâ??
â??The Delaneyâ??
â??Sally Brownâ??
â??Dirty Old Townâ??
â??Boys In The Bandâ??
â??Albionâ??
â??Good Old Daysâ??
â??I Get Alongâ??
â??What A Wasterâ??
â??What Katy Didâ??
â??Bilo Songâ??
â??Up The Bracketâ??

Maybe Rhett will break into Markie's place, steal his laptop, gets arrested, goes to jail, Markie cries foul, Rhett gets out, and the board is one big happy family again, even bigger and better than ever.
