Title: Rhett is touching himself
Post by: TheNomad on December 09, 2003, 11:54:00 am
Old 97's 1/23 and 1/24 at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC.  Does this mean they are back and touring again?

we don't "whing" about ticket prices at "the club", we just make value judgements based on our own criteria and sometimes marvel at what we perceive to be the indiscriminate taste of others...but to each their own...thing is, I doubt the show would be $40 because the Old 97s aren't overblown hype...

Reunion shows like this tend to be a letdown.

It's not a reunion show. They've played a handful of dates in Texas this year, lncluding the ACL Fest.

The band is scheduled to go into the studio and record the next album in January, with a fall your/release date. What will it sound like? Well Rhett handed the other member a copy of Ziggy Stardust for inspiration.

They're not signed to any label, and plan to shop it around once it's done. At least that's the last I heard.

    Tickets are $20 each.

    Thanks for the tip Nomad.

Oh really...then what's this if it's not a whinge, posted by your delightful hubby recently...he mustn't have run this one by you first.

I don't consider that a whinge, no. I guess like everything else, it's a matter of opinion, in which you and I obviously differ in nearly every way.

I think this is one I will have to go see.  Will even wear my Old 97s shirt.  They were great live when I saw them at Fletchers a year or two back.  Had seen their stickers around everywhere forever, never knew much about them.

Really like that the bassist lets Gibby sleep on his couch.

What's the story on Tim Burgess with Starsailor?  Tim Burgess guest vocals?  solo?  DJ?

Tim Burgess has a solo album...... Its not meant to be very good. I think his show will be him and a guitar.

I love the Charlatans (up until about 1998), but Tim Burgess solo? PUH-LEEZE. That's one I will safely skip. Personally, they should have packed it in after Rob Collins died.

Does my wife have to post a picture of me touching myself to get this thread back on topic? This thread is about how excited we are that the best band in the world, the Old 97's are playing the BB and the 9:30 CLub. Please, no more GWAR posts. I am not touching myself over the prospect of a GWAR show.

The 9:30 site says "Friday, January 23rd" (the correct calendar date); the Bowery Ballroom site says "Friday, January 24th and Saturday, 25th" (sic). So does DC get the Friday night date, or does NYC get Friday and Saturday and leave us with, say, Thursday?

Yeah, yeah, sure back to topic...oh, did you see Man Utd. beat Stuttgart 2-0 yesterday to finish top of their group in the Champions League....and in a very clinical fashion too.

Okay, what were you saying that I'm sure was absolutely tittilating for the rest of us?

Celeste and I weren't saying anything. Others were speculating on a possible Old 97's show, which appears to be happening. You should go, you might like them.

I once went to a 930 triple-bill, Backsliders+Old 97s+SCOTS.  Thought 97s were OK, but definitely came in 3rd place

I was at that show, and would have to disagree. Though I do like both SCOTS and the now defunct Backsliders.

I saw the Old 97's open for Wilco at the 9:30, and thought Wilco was better. But the 97's fared better with the headlining slot on their next tour.

Throughout the 97s set, everyone was standing around talking about how hot the Backsliders were.  After SCOTS were 5 minutes into their set, no one was still thinking about the opening acts.  But yeah, I understand that fun is a novelty in some scenes

Actually, I was never into GWAR at all.  I've never seen them either, although I'm always tempted, just to see what the fuss is about.

Now, to keep this back on topic, I'm extremely psyched to see the Old 97's.  I've got to admit, I've only just gotten into them within the past year or so, mainly from Rhett going on about them constantly.  Thanks a ton, although that's yet another band I missed out on due to my sheer pigheadedness.

Do the tickets go on sale tomorrow at the box office as well?

Well in case anybody cares, here's the latest.

Thursday, December 11 2:54 PM:  ARRIVED - Hark the herald angels sing, and in the Miller household they've been heralding the arrival on Maxwell Iahn Miller, all nine pounds of whom joined the rest of us on November 15. And like the rest of the second generation 97's, he's truly one beautiful baby. I think, however, that all the papa's involved will admit to having married extremely well.

DUE - A new Old 97's album, damnit. The good news is - or rather, the good rumors are - that the 97's will hit the
studio in February to wax a late Summer of '04 release.

DONE - The Old 97's have new mangement, which they share with Kings of Leon, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris among others. It is, I believe, Vector Management out of Nashville, and according to both Ken and Murry, the new guys are extremely enthusiastic about getting the boys back in the studio and out on the road, and the band is just as enthusiastic about the new mangement.

COMING SOON - The Old 97's are hitting the road again! January will see the boys kick off a mini-tour, and if the past is any guide, these sets should feature some the the tunes the guys are working up for inclusion in their upcoming CD. And while they may return to the road in March and April to warm up for a full fledged tour latter in the year, miss these January shows at your peril!

The same guy also manages Patty Loveless, John Hiatt, Johnny Lang, and Trace Adkins (plus Lovett and EmmyLou Harris). Sounds like Kings of Leon are the oddity of the bunch, and maybe the 97's will get some airtime on the Nashville Network.
