It appears the Slickees have decided to return for their annual reunion gig: 12/26 at Iota.
Their reunions usually consist of 2 shows - one in DC and one in Baltimore. Anybody know anything about a Baltimore gig?
The Beatnik Flies and Switchblade are also doing a reunion gig at Iota on 12/27.

Cybernetic Dreams of pi (http://www.twintone.com/projects/8337.html) is now on CD! What a fuckin' great album!

Holy crap! I had given up on that. You can get "Uh-Oh...No Breaks" too!
Thanks for the tip!
-
I just bought Cybernetic two minutes ago. I'm fuckin' stoked!
-
Sweet! Will be getting it too. Only had a live cassette tape that I found years back. Now can have their classic.
-
I picked up both. I've had a Napster'd version of "Cybernetic..." for a couple of years, but it sucks. I had a hard time finding any of the "Uh-Oh" tracks, even on Napster and Kazaa. I can't wait to get these.

I've heard there's a bit of debate over who opened for who. I like to think that U2 opened. How cool would that be?

FYI - I've been told there is no Baltimore gig this time around. Only the one show at Iota.
-
I used to be in a band called Date Bait with Kim Kane, and he told me that U2 opened for the Slickies. So, I suppose he is telling the truth. But, it's hard to trust skinny people.
-
Shoddy, which instrument did you play in Date Bait? I loved that band. And are you "Shoddy" on inDC?
I saw the Slickee Boys open for the Kinks at Constitution Hall in 1984... there were a bunch of new wave chicks in mini-skirts dancing to them in the front rows, but unfortunately most of the crowd were Lawnguyland/Newjerseyans from GW, and all they could think about was that they wanted to hear the Kinks.

I heard it from my English teacher, who, coincidentally, is married to the Slickee's former manager.
He was also in Tiny Desk Unit (as featured on the 930 â?? Live record).

I was at that show. One of my first concerts. It was great.

This should be a good show and a fun night as always with the Slickee Boys. Would be nice to have Switchblade open for them. Better yet, The Wanktones/Switchblade/The Slickees.
This would be a great night for the older forum DC area residents/members to introduce the newer and younger ones to some great old DC entertainment. Let them see what they were missing all those years ago. :D

In 2001 the reunion lineup was The Slickee Boys (1976)/Switchblade/Slickee Boys. The '76 version was them with Martha Hull (their original singer), doing all of the _really_ old stuff. They came out and did their regular set later. That was a fun night.
The 2000 reunion had Black Market Baby opening. That was a blast too.
Iota's page doesn't list an opener for this year yet. The Beatnik Flies would be fun.

Wait you guys did the song "Dog Food", right? Corned Beef hash if I remember correctly and not real dog food.

Well I didn't have to wait long. Ordered on 12/9. In my mailbox on 12/12. Sweet.

Got mine today too. MP3ing it right this moment. Was kinda disappointed there was no cover art...

DATE BAIT!!! Sweet... my friend and I used to hang out at Joe's in Plaza del Mercado. You weren't one of the guys working there were you?
I was too young to have seen you all play, but a guy I knew said that you all used to carry out a coffin onstage.
STOMP! STOMP!

I had a sub teacher at Kennedy that always talked about the Urban Verbs. Is this English teacher of yours a guy?

I use to love the Urban Verbs and have seen them a number of times.
Is that the Chris Thompson that was a DJ at WGTB, or was that the 'other one'? This one use to have a great radio show.
Tiny Desk Unit were pretty cool too.
Does your dad have a radio show or does he perform some other function? And is it Roddy Franz? (I think he was the guitar player; or maybe drums. It was so long ago.) He's the brother of Chris Franz from the Talking Heads.

Yup, he was the WGTB DJ (along with Seth, I do believe). Rob Goldstein was the Urban Verbs guitarist (and is now currently the NPR librarian). My dad is the ombudsman...ch ch ch check it out (but please don't send him threatening emails) -> Media Matters (http://www.npr.org/yourturn/ombudsman/index.html)

The Slickee Boys took 2nd place for best new act on MTV's video of the year awards for 1983 with their vid WHEN I GO TO THE BEACH (http://www.twintone.com/video/slickee/) from the Cybernetic Dreams of pi album. High Honors indeed! No wonder U2 opened for them.

Re-issued! (http://www.woundedbird.com/)

thanks for posting that link Beets! I've just ordered one, my vinyl copy has been trashed for years. I used to play Subways, Ring-Ring, and The Only One of You all the time when I was a DJ at Poseurs. That site has some good old stuff, I got Root Boy and Holly Beth Vincent as well.

Don't forget
TUFF DARTS (http://www.woundedbird.com/tuffdarts/6048.htm)
<img src="http://www.woundedbird.com/tuffdarts/6048.jpg" alt=" - " />
"This is goofy melodic punk/power-pop with the kind of cartoonish anti-social and anti-love lyrics that made the early Ramones and Dictators records so fun. Musically, they remind me most of The 'Tators, and maybe Richard Hell & the Voidoids (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000695OZ/qid%3D1071611111/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/102-3782939-2164921), though they're not as arty. Fun stuff. Now is anybody up for reissuing The Brains and Fingerprintz onto c.d.?"

I think I prefer Mink Deville.

I use to be friends with one of the guitar players in this band. He use to cry on my shoulder about his bitch girlfriend. Nice guy but haven't seen him for years.
Oh, and for those who don't know this, Robert Gordon was also in this band.

So is anyone other than me going to see the Slickee Boys tonight?

I too want to know how the show went. I've had such a hectic week that I couldn't even think of working it in to my schedule.

It was a lot of fun - as always. Iota was packed. Mark was gulping down Jim Beam all night. Marshall's guitar is no longer covered in black/pink stripes. Your basic Slickee Boys set, including some covers (Journey To The Center of Your Mind, Someone's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In, Are You Gonna Be There (at the Love-In), etc.) I love watching Dan sing "Eighteen". Going All The Way/Glendora, The Brain That Refused To Die, Here To Stay, Escalator 66, Dropping Off To Sleep, This Party Sucks....We were loving every second of it. It looked like they were having a blast too.
My SO (who is really unfamiliar with the Slickee Boys) made the comment that even the really good bands these days don't actually look like they're having any fun on stage, but the Slickees seemed like they were just having a big ol' rock-and-roll party.
Great night. Hope they do it again next year.
-
The only song they didn't do that I was hoping to hear was Jailbait Janet, I think they might have just forgotten to play it. Loved Mark's sailor suit though. You can always count on the Slickees for a good time.
Went to Switchblade on Saturday night, and they really ripped the roof off the joint. Mark Wenner from the Nighthawks blew some fine harp on a couple of songs, Bill Kirchen got up there and traded some licks with Eddie Angel, which was amazing, and Abaad from The Reactions & Razz tore it up on a couple of songs too. All in all it was a stellar weekend at Iota. I am already looking forward to the same thing next year!

I'm really sorry I missed them. How were the Beatnik Flies?
-
The Flies were fun, it was good to see them again after so long. Saw 'em many a time at dc space.

It's just a shame that we have to wait until next year! A Summer retro gig would be lots and lots of fun. (Hint, hint, hint. :D :D :D )

hell yeah - let's make it a Slickees/Wanktones/Date Bait triple bill!
-
Not sure that's really possible...I have been told many times that the Wanktones will never play again. Don't know the details, but there's some kind of bad feeling involved that precludes them from doing that band. Too bad, I loved 'em. And as for the Slickees, Max lives in Cali and only makes it back to this coast for the holidays. I think it's all they can do to get together for one reunion a year.
-
Damn! Maybe we'll get lucky and Max will be able to take advantage of some more discounted airfares and find a nice reason to come back for another visit. There's always hoping and they've got the loyal fans.
That's a shame about The Wanktones. They always sounded so good and blew away so many other Rockabilly and Psychobilly performers.
-
Yeah, I knew about Max being in California. It was just wishful thinking. Never heard about the bad blood with the Wanktones though. That's too bad.
